Pretty much guarantees he'll play two more games and his contract will go back to Blazers' cap. This story is not going away anytime soon and it's being debated everywhere, even here. All I gotta say is that someone in the Memphis organization has a lot of balls

I'm a Blazers fan, so ...

This might surprise some people to hear me say this, but If Darius really is ready to play and can contribute I say more power to him. If the Grizzlies really do want his services and this isn’t just some screw job I say more power to them too.

I think Blazers upper management really handled this whole situation poorly and are coming across as very low class, petty and small.

In any case, there’s a big misconception that this somehow torpedoes all of the Blazers cap flexibility this summer, what’s really happened is that they’ll go from a max of about 25 million in cap space to about 16 million max depending retaining or waiving guys like Ike Diogu, Channing Frye, Steve Blake and/or Travis Outlaw. The only two that will be difficult to decide on are the last two, but even then if one of the 4 is kept the Blazers will still have about 12-13 million to play with.

God, I hope this story dies soon.

Good for you

A lot of teams, unfortunately including us, have to deal with dead salaries taking up space.

If the kid can play then the Blazers lost thier calculated bet and no one should stand in his way of doing the only thing he probably knows or wants to do.

Not so sure about your analysis of their money situation though.

You can look it up at www.storytellerscontracts.info

Assuming Darius plays (which I do) basically the Blazers will have to renounce Channing Frye and Ike Diogu (which I have no doubt they will), then decline team options on Travis Outlaw (3.6 million) and/or Steve Blake (4 million) to get their cap figure to roughly 16 million.

The underlying assumption I make is that 2009’s cap figure will be very close to the 2008 figure (~58 million) and they will be on the hook for a minimum of about 32 million in salary … of course they will probably have a draft pick that will take up a million or so and I doubt they’d fail to retain Steve Blake — not flashy, but he’s solid and dependable.

In any case, I’ll stop boring you with Blazers cap info.

I'm guessing here

but i see Outlaw at about 5 mil/year. Blake maybe, considering his age

Blake

Key,unheralded cog that the Blazers will no doubt keep around.

There's nothing the Blazers can do

They would have to somehow prove that the Grizzlies are trying to screw them over, which they can’t. He was waived and resigned after playing two games so that his contract would be guaranteed for the rest of the season. It’s pretty obvious that they are testing him out and giving him a chance to try to make a comeback. Plus, they have the NBA’s backing as well as the NBAPA’s backing. And really, what do they have to gain by screwing over the Blazers?

Screwing them over for cap room

And forcing them to make a decision on players rather than keeping them all and getting the cap space they wanted anyway. That’s pretty much it. It forces the Blazers to make a tougher decision.

What they have to gain

Both teams have cap space this summer, so it lessens competition in the FA market for the Grizzlies.

Increases the amount of luxury tax being paid, which increases the payout for the Griz.

Ummm, okay

Still don’t see it. But, your opinion. I think it was a dick move to dick Portland myself. No other reason. Jealousy has created this situation.

You maybe right

or mabe they just think he can still play and hope to steal a good player cheap for a few years (?). Its hard to say. The Celtics seem to have thought well of him.

No

I could have believed it of Boston. They have no bench, and their future is now. If they could get a decent year or two out of Darius before his lack of knee cartilage ruins him, I could see a team making that decision to try and bolster a non-existent bench.

Memphis? Doesn’t make sense. Darius isn’t going to be playing in 3 years, and Memphis is in a youth movement (in case you missed the Gasol trade).

Now, maybe they were so low on players that they needed someone, anyone, and Darius helps them financially rather than costing them a few hundred grand. So perhaps, under the most charitable interpretation, we could say that they were just looking for a body to finish out the year, and Darius was the best one available for them financially.

But in all probability, the biggest motivation is to screw Portland.

Losing out on Oden

Memphis had the worst record that year. One possible angle anyway.

Animosity?

Who said anything about animosity?

It’s about money and cap space.

1. Extra luxury tax money the Griz get from Portland.

2. Limits Portland’s ability to compete with the Grizzlies in free agency this summer. That means the Griz are more likely to get a free agent they want, and there’s a chance they will have to pay less for him since Paul Allen won’t be splashing money around. Simple supply and demand.

What’s with the “homerism” thing? Perhaps instead of accusing someone of being a homer, you should ask the reasoning. Blazer fans are capable of reasoning and logic as well, you know.

I think the Blazers have more cojones for bullying

than Memphis for playing Miles. It is my guess that the Players Assoc. will score either a restraining order/retraction from the Blazers or a bigger monetary victory to further gargle the cries of financial ouch!.

by betweentheeyes on Jan 10, 2009 1:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

One note -

The Grizz only play twice in the next 10 days, so Miles will need to get into both games before his contract expires or sign another contract after this one if it is to impact the Blazers.

iirc

You can extend a 10 day another 10.

by sactown on Jan 10, 2009 9:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

This is Miles' 2nd 10 day with the Grizz

They’ll need to sign him for the rest of the year or cut him after this 10 day run. And it appears that I missed a game – if the Grizzlies signed Miles effective today, his 10th day will inlude a 3rd game.

!st contract was not a 10 day?

I think, a different vet min.contract that became guaranteed after a certain amount of time…

I think the 10 day options just started

Agreed

I believe this is correct. I don’t think his first contract was a 10-day.

After the whole “memo” debacle, I think this is the only real way it could have gone smoothly. The Grizzlies didn’t want his contract guaranteed, so they waived him and then re-signed him to a 10-day contract. If they bring him back for another (after the 2-game minimum) then they should be free of perceived wrongdoing (even more so if they end up signing him for the rest of the season anyway).
