There were others who came in on occasion, and this has been mostly a group effort tonight. But, I suspect this will be pretty consistent.

Hawes needs a toughness coach
I like his shooting, passing, etc. But you cant play a finesse game
down on the block like that if you’re a slow, no hops white dude—that’s why he’s more comfortable outside.
He needs an up-and-under move like Vlade’s.

When Mbenga blocks your shit, you’re in trouble. Needs better court awareness (considering that’s one of his offensive attributes), and really strength and explosiveness.

That was a home town horn for sure !!
We Gotta to look at the bright side. They had a much better effort in the second half. The team as a whole just competed harder. Hawes had a bad game. He has started the season against 2 of the best big men in the game. That has not made him look very good. I really wish he had gone down and competed in the summer league. I think he would have benefited from the time with his new team mates and his team mates would have a better feel for his game. He wouldn’t be as rusty and out of sync. Hopefully Hawes improves as the pre season plays out. It’s the regular season that matters anyway.
So far in the pre season, the Kings have played some real heavyweights. Their next game is against Golden State at home. I’d like to see how they do against a team that isn’t a for sure title contender. I think Evans is a winner. I am really excited about his game. Evans is a player, and I hope the rest of the team feeds off of his energy. This team is going to have to run to get points, and they are going to have to hit their jumpers because their inside game is still young and raw. The only remedy for lack of experience is playing time. Hawes and Thompson are going to improve with playing time, and when they do the Kings will be very competitive.
p.s. Replacement refs have got to GO! THEY SUK!
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Those 9 dimes are huge!
He is most probably going to start at point guard (because Beno is the same Beno as last year) If he can keep his assists up and turnovers down, he will help the Kings win even if his jumper isn’t quite there yet. Petrie is beginning to look like a genius again picking this kid. While Rubio is still hiding in Europe, ’Reke is gonna tear it up here stateside. The 8 Boards are impressive too. We need all the rebounding help we can get, and if we can get 4 or 5 boards from the point guard position every night, that would really help.
Go KINGS !!

I raise my hand. How is being objective labled being a 'hater'?
No excuse for the missed dunk and the lack of effort and success against Bynum (not that others have done so much better). He played better near the end, but we can all admit his first two and half quarters sucked major eggs. 18 points doesn’t mean anything when you get outplayed by both of their centers. I’m not going to let a box score erase the poor play that I witnessed from Hawes. Plus we lost – period. We all know he can do better.
October 28th couldn't come soon enough.

I agree ! You gotta call it like you see it.
Hawes has strung together some real bad games. He skipped out on summer camp and no real reason has been given. He is under the microscope a little bit because of his importance to the Kings. Hawes needs to play well for the Kings to compete. I don’t think anyone here wants Hawes to fail. A Hater wants a player to fail and flunk out. I would love to see Hawes put up 18 and 9, and not give up 24 and 8 to his opposite. Our interior defense is soft and Hawes is the main reason. He needs to play stronger in the post. I think the pre season will get Hawes up to speed. But you can’t ignore the fact that he has come out flat this pre season and as a result he has looked bad. Lets hope he improves as the pre season rolls on.
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Did you watch the game?
Kobe broke down KMart and Hawes left Bynum to help, so Kobe thru up a pass and Bynum threw it down. Hawes helped by no one backed him up. Later, Fisher went end to end, going threw 3 Kings, JT left Bynum to help and Bynum got another easy dunk.
Hawes had to play Bynum straight up, but when JT played him he got help. Tyreke, JT , Hawes & Noc got 37 or the 47 rebounds and they also got 63 of the 92 pts scored by the team. I think we could probably find few people who had a worst game than Hawes. He also outrebounded Bynum & out assisted as well. They both had the same amount of blocks, but Bynum outscored Hawes. But, the majority of the pt difference can be attributed to the easy dunks Bynum got when the back court defense broke down.
Could Hawes have done better? Yes. And, there was nothing during the game that would indicate that he won’t. Also, for all those haters out there, If Hawes is going to shoot 500 from the 3, then he needs to keep shooting them until the Bynums of the world stop playing off him and leave the paint to defend.

I have to remind myself: Its too early in the season to be fully hating on anyone
but Hawes just looked discombobulated out there. Missed dunk, balls bouncing off
his face. Putting a weak hand up like that’s defense. I think he’s out of shape. And he has
to play with a chip on his shoulder, or he’s going to be continually abused by tougher players (read: nearly every other center in the league).
by VirginiaBlue on Oct 15, 2009 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ehh
To me, hating is demanding someone to be traded and saying that they suck – period. Commenting on a player’s poor play is just simply that – objective commentating. I don’t think stating that any one player is sucking should be some sacred comment cow. Whatever – go Kings.

Yea, Hawes looks outta SYNC!
But you can’t put all the bad defense on him. Thompson hasn’t played great in the post either. I notice that no one is “h8ting” on Thompson. I think some of the criticism on Hawes is because he skipped out on summer league without a very good reason. It kinda makes it looked like he “big leagued” the team. Like he was too important to bother with summer league. He wasn’t required to attend, but he has said he would then blew it off. Thompson went to the summer league and is seen as putting in the hard work, but his game still needs to improve. Hawes’s game would look a little better I bet if he had gone to the summer league.
Lets just hope the team gels and gets better as a whole. I think tonight many (including me) were critical of Hawes’s game, but no one here wants the kid to fail! H8ters want a player to fail, and want them traded. No one should want Hawes traded. He is just begining his 3rd season. That is usually when the light bulb goes off and many players find their game! I believe Hawes will get better. He doesn’t look out of shape, in fact it looks like he put on a little more muscle. He was outclassed by Bynum. He will have to improve his overall defense to compete against the better centers in the league. Next game is Golden State at home! The first 3 pre season games have been against 2 pretty darn good teams! Golden State isn’t a title contender. I will be very interested in how they play against a team that isn’t a powerhouse like the Lakers or the Trailblazers. They will need a lot more teamwork to compete against teams like those.
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

For the love of...
Solutions – anyone? Do we really think that May or Brockman or Thomas would be an improvement over Hawes? That-is-crazy-talk.
So you want to deal Hawes? Fine. Craft a deal that gets rid of him and brings in Oden or Bynum or Lopez or whichever center you want – just be ready to part with Martin to do it, because he is the only guy not named Tyreke Evans that has true value on this roster right now.
I have never seen such intelligent fans (and you guys are intelligent – no sarcasm) give up so quickly on a 21 year old kid trying to mold his game to what his team is asking of him. Remember, like JT, he was a bit of a late grower – he has not been playing up front all that long.
Patience is a virtue, one that is apparently in rather short supply.

Shawes is awful for a white guy whose 21 years old,
should be a senior at UW right now, and was a skinny 7 foot 215 lbs kid coming out of UW as a 19 year old, 240 lbs 7 footer at that. Awful this kid is.
Did I hate his selection on draft day? Of course I did. Do I hate his draft day selection? No. Would I rather have Al Horford than Hawes? Of course. Horford went 3rd overall in 2007. That’s not exactly 10th overall. Would I rather have Joakim Noah? Uh, no, even though he would make this team better defensively, they also would be worse offensively. There’s a balance here. I don’t think Joakim Noah and Jason Thompson is as effecctive as JT & Shawes. Maybe that’s me though. (I don’t think getting Jerryd Bayless would have been as good as getting Tyreke Evans. Maybe I’m cynical on that too.)
The only thing I’d even point about getting to take Noah (who went 9th to the Bulls in 07) is that I think the Kings might have taken Marreese Speights instead of JT. But, and while I don’t know that I would have wanted Noah & Speights as my tandem, I still very much love the idea of JT & Shawes as a competent/borderline all-star tandem. That isn’t a bad value for your 10th/12th overall picks in b2b drafts if you ask me.
At the end of the day, I’d rather have Shawes, JT and Derrick Favors than Noah, Favors and Speights. (Or, Noah, Favors and JT.)
Sometimes things work out for the best. To quote a favorite kitty of mine: Breathe Baby Breathe!

I dont think anyone is giving up on Hawes yet.
He is just starting his 3rd season, and that is when many players find their game. He is still working on getting stronger. He put on 10 lbs of muscle, and it hasn’t negatively effected his outside shooting. I think people put a lot of expectations on Hawes when he decided not to attend summer league without a real good reason. I think if Hawes had played in the summer league, he wouldnt look quite so rusty and out of sync. And people would not be quite so critical of his play.
Also, in 3 games he has gone up against Greg Oden and Andrew Bynum, 2 VERY good centers. He has struggled against some very good competition. I think Hawes is going to improve as the preseason rolls on. Golden State is up next and I am excited to see Hawes match up against Andris Biedrins! The West has some really top flight young centers, and Hawes is going to go up against them night after night. He will need to improve his defense to compete in the West.
I also don’t think the interior defense problems can all be blamed on Hawes. Thompson has had his own problems guarding the paint, but people seem to be giving him a pass because he did play in the summer league and has put in the hard work. I am rooting for Hawes! I hope he can get it together!
I am really excited about the play of ‘Reke. If that kid is able to develop a decent jumper, he will be unstoppable!! He is very quick. I didn’t see anyone on the Lakers or Trailblazers who could stay in front of this kid! Teams are playing off him trying to take away his drive to the bucket. When his jumper starts going down, teams are going to have their hands full trying to find a way to stop lucky #13
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Yeah the whole Summer League argument is in fact wack
You just proved it. What does Summer League have to do with defending Andrew Bynum effectively? (It doesn’t.)
And Greg Oden and Andrew Bynum are 2 very good C’s. They also play with far better talent than Hawes plays with too. That doesn’t hurt I don’t think.

I’m not the god dam GM of the Kings am I? Am I getting paid Petrie’s freakin salary to figure this out? No. I’m just a fan, but if you cant admit that Hawes got worked pretty good by a majority of the bigs on the Lakers than you’re a freakin’ idiot. That’s all I’m trying to point out – that Hawes looked weak. Excuse me for saying anything bad about the Kings – a team that I’ve been a fan of since they came to sac. Hawes lacks toughness. If you don’t see that than your a blind man. Maybe he will get tougher and maybe he won’t. I actually hope he does. I like parts of his game, but he’s going to continually get embarrased under the rim if he doesn’t get tough. I can’t believe nobody’s agreeing with me.

So what??? It’s one freaking game, a preseason game against one of the best young Cs in the league and the best team in the NBA.
He had an ok performance, pretty much breaking even in stats against Bynum who’s bigger and stronger. What do you expect?? You want Hawes to dominate the center matchup every game?? You want him to always come out on top?? I guess he is not allowed to have abad game because he’s just so weak.
You may want to look a bit closer to find where the idiot is.

Do I need to point out the irony of that statement? (Me thinks yes)
Hawes was so terrible that he got 9 boards. Bynum got 8 boards. Yes there was a minutes disparity, but Bynum literally caught 2 or 3 carom’s that were extremely odd to begin with. It’s not like he was an incredible boardman tonight himself.
I honestly think that the final stat line of Hawes & Bynum shows them to be about even with the minute disparity.
As far as Bynum’s strengths and Hawes weaknesses, well that’s the way it goes. If Hawes hits 3’s at a 40% clip, that does make it difficult for teams to decide how they want to defend Spencer. It’s not like he didn’t take any inside shots or anything either. He had a great hook that rolled off the rim, a blown layup off an up & under against Bynum, and got to the line against Odom using that same up & under.
Was Hawes spectacular? Of course not. I’m not arguing he is. I’m also not going to condemn him after ONE pre-season game in a pointless context when held in contrast with an 82 game season that will ABSOLUTELY mean something.

Good grief
it’s only 3 games into a pre-season following a year where we came last. . .
Now if we had won the championship last year then i think i’d be pretty pissed off with today’s performance. . .but we didnt, in fact, we did the very opposite. . . and so it’s no surprise that previews everywhere just said the Kings just flat-out need help in ALL areas.
Yes i think there’s an objective truth to a poor performance by a player who got eaten up. . but bloody hell you have to put that into context. If people are expecting either
a) we’re going to be in playoff contention this season
b) we can nab an all-star out of the blue next to nothing cos other teams are just queuing up to help us
c) that every player from our team last year is going to have all-star potential.
then you’re just kidding yourself.
As it stands, we’re still the last placed team so i cant understand why anyone would expect otherwise.. . .i read on a chat on espn and a kings fan asked if we would make the playoffs. ..geez, if that’s what people are expecting. .then man, you’re going to have a lot rougher season than i am.

This average would have ranked Hawes 5th in scoring amongst centers last year, and 7th in rebounding amongst centers. He got outplayed tonight, but he had far from a disastrous evening.

I hope the Lakers don’t win again with Artest.

I disagree..
Hawes isn’t an “old Dog”. He is a Young PUP. He has plenty of time to become stronger and more aggressive. In fact, he only needs to strengthen his post defense while retaining his scoring and rebounding. The West is full of very good centers, and Hawes will be guarding a good center most every night. Hawes has a good work ethic by all accounts, and I am confident that he will be a average to above average center when he gets it all together. He needs to become stronger in his upper and lower body. Don’t see him ever being an all-star center, but with the good perimeter players the Kings have, he doesn’t need to be. He just has to check the guy in front of him, and occasionally block a shot on help defense.
He is 7 feet tall. He is getting stronger, and has put on 10 lbs of muscle this off season. He has gotten bigger every year. I’d like him to put on about 15 more pounds of muscle, especially in his legs to help him stand his ground and not get driven under the basket so often. His weakness is his inability to keep from being rooted out under the hoop and his inability to back down other centers to get his shot off. He also needs the strength to score around the hoop while taking contact. Centers get bumped every time they go up for a basket in the NBA and it rarely gets called. He needs to be strong enough to absorb the contact and still make the hoop.
On a side note, I hate to say this but Artest might be the toughness piece the Lakers have been missing. Artest might very well be the player to push the Lakers over the top. I hate to admit it, but the Lakers are good enough to win it all this year. They sure looked good tonight. They have the 3 VERY good players that championship teams need to win it all. Kobe – Odom – Artest. And they have a very good supporting cast. Many of there bench players would start on the Kings. Barring injury, the Lakers look like a finals team. I hate that this is true, but what can you do? Hope for an injury ?
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

You guys are a bunch a fuckin nuts.
Seriously. All I was trying to say was that Hawes looked WAY MORE weak than he should have. Get over it.

You haven't made one convincing argument
Not once. You keep repeating yourself, and the real fault here is YOUR EXPECTATION. To quote a wise feller: Good thread and Good Night.

I liked Westphals
Attempt to control the tempo. I think he’s going to be really good w/ substitutions. He was really working the system in the first half in terms of his rotation

I disagree
I think getting the crap kicked out of your bigs is completely acceptable. It’s so much fun, I think I’m going to ask 65 year old Muhammad Ali to take a few more punches in the ring.

WOW are we all rooting for the Kings here?
Hawes has had a rough go of it the first 3 games in PRESEASON. in 3 PRESEASON games, He has gone up against Greg Oden (potential allstar) and Andrew Bynum (allstar). He hasn’t looked very good doing it. He looks a little rusty, and some of that might be attributed to the fact that he skipped out on summer league without a very good reason.
On the brighter side, Hawes looks like he put on some muscle in the off-season and it hasn’t negatively effected his outside game. He came out in the second half against the Lakers with a lot of effort. He was working hard, but it didn’t really show in the stat books because he is rusty and out of sync with his teammates. They have played together for a WEEK. Give the kid some TIME!
I was critical of his play tonight, but I am not giving up on the kid! Lets see how he plays against Andris Biedrins and the Warriors. His game should improve as the pre season rolls on. We need Hawes to improve if the Kings are going to compete at all this year. I am pulling for the kid to succeed. The West has some of the best young centers in the NBA. There is nothing to be gained by h8ting on the kid and calling for him to be traded. He won’t be traded. He is here for the foreseeable future, so lets start cheering for the guy and hope he turns it around. He is young and has lots of time to improve. My only complaint is that he blew off summer league without a good excuse. He really could have used that time with his teammates to improve his game and timing with all the new players on the team. Lets hope Hawes finds his game, because if he doesn’t, it will be a very LONG season !
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

I think you've made it clear what your trying to say. "Hawes is WEAK"
What the problem is that your not listening. Everyone is saying that Hawes isn’t the toughest Center in the league, but he can improve and until then his skill level is good enough to offset the centers he plays against.
Bynum didn’t score all his points off Hawes. Bynum scored almost half his points from the FT line, but Hawes only had 3 fouls and all of them weren’t against Bynum. Bynum got set up by his guards for 3 easy dunks when the backcourt defense broke down, not when Hawes’ defense broke down. Hawes had more rebound, more assists, the same number of blocked shots. And, finally Hawes plays with the worst team in the league last year and Bynum plays with the World Champs.
Could Hawes have gone stronger to the hoop on a couple of the interior passes he got? Yes. Now let’s chop off his head.

LOL
OFF with his head !!
Seriously, I was saying before Hawes isn’t the entire problem. He has played poorly in 3 preseason games. I have hope that his play will improve. And Thompson’s play needs to improve too. The Kings have to find a way to improve their interior defense, because it is killing them in games. There must be improvement in the young bigs, or they will have to bring in a vet big to help solidify the front line. Defense starts from the middle out. If you are weak in the middle, you are weak all around. Our perimeter defense looked ok. Other than Beno getting burned again. ’Reke looks like a solid defender, an K-Mart could be better this year.
This team has played together for a whole WEEK. Time eventually will help this team gel and they will play better. I already like the way PW handled the rotations. He left Hawes in there to toughen him up. Hawes needs to see that kind of pressure and learn to deal with it. The centers in the West are pretty damn good, and Hawes will have to learn to handle defending his position. My biggest knock on Brad Miller was he was as soft as a marshmallow, and never did anything to improve his defense. That was the reason I h8ted Miller and was so glad when he left. Hawes is a hard worker and is willing to learn. If he keeps that attitude and keeps working hard, he WILL get better.
If you are a fan of the Kings, you gotta be pulling for the guy! I know I am. If Hawes can become a decent center, we have the firepower to make some noise!! ’Reke’s game has me very excited. When that young man discovers his jumper, he is going to be a beast! We need a player who demands double teams to loosen up defenses and help everyone get better. Between Martin and ’Reke, our outside in attack could be lethal. But the young bigs gotta step it up.
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Hawes didn't play in the 2nd Portland game
and he had a bad ankle in the 1st game.
Both of Bynum’s 1st 2 dunks came off breakdowns in backcourt defense. First, Kobe beat Martin and Hawes had to leave Bynum to help. The defense didn’t rotate fast enough and Bynum got the easy lob dunk. The second came when Fisher took the ball end to end, threw 3 Kings. JT left Bynum, again to rotation on defense and Bynum got his 2nd lob dunk.
One point that’s being overlooked. Spencer played Bynum man to man with no double teams. JT on the otherhand often got help. I don’t know if this was a test on PW’s part or if he really thought Hawes didn’t need help.
Hawes got more passes in the post than I have seen in most of his games last year. One from Tyreke he finished, 2 were blocked and 1 he missed, if I remember correctly. But, he was 7 of 16 or 44% and 2 of 4 from 3 for 50%. To go with 9 rebounds, 1 assist & 1 Block, not a bad First complete game.
After a little more court time maybe heill start to catch those balls that went threw his hands or off his head.
