What has PW done to our Kings?

The Kings are 7th in RPG differential with 4.25 per game after playing the Redacted who are 3rd with 5.75 and Portland twice who are 4th with 5.0.  Damn!    FG % defense finds them 12th at .433 and 3 pt fg %  they are third at .260  As we all pointed out when he was hired PW can't coach a lick of FT % defense and we are dead last at .828.  Rat Bastard.    I find this extremely encouraging, even though only 5 or 6 Kings are playing well in pre-season.

If PW can keep these numbers going we may have a better season than any of us expected.  This really isn't a post as much as I saw these numbers and just had to tell somebody. Start count  down to when Pookey says it is only pre-season in 5...4...3...j

I still think its way to soon to use statistics to reinforce our opinion

but he’s definitely changed the mentality of the team, especially in regards to rebounding and defense. I really don’t think we’re going to be that bad on either front this year. Definitely not as bad as last year.

Accountability

for a players coach, one that gives them structure but the freedom to incorporate their game into the offense, PW sure isn’t shy about calling out a player infront of everyone when they screw up. I truely believe that he’s a coach that just doesn’t preach defense but demands defense.

Plus, the players he has in the lineup, are definitely better defensively than last year. Hawes vs. Miller, JT vs. MM, Tyreke vs Beno, Martin on good legs vs Martin on bad legs. Mason is on par with Salmons, and Noc is as good as anyone we had coming off the bench not name Cisco.

Yes, he truly does hold his players accountable

I spent a considerable amount of time just watching Westphal’s interaction with his players.

I went to the box office last night at about 6pm

to get some $20 dollar tickets for my 7 year old son and I. I was told that there were no more so I paid $40.50 for the seats in Sec 218 B 1,2. Nice seats. However, I was pretty mad when I noticed that there were many seat in the $20 dollar range still left. Then I was even more mad after the game while leaving because Gary on 1140 said there was only 11,000 people in attendance. I dont know if that number refered to only the people in attendance or to tickets sold. If it was regarding tickets sold then the woman at the box office lied to me. Does anyone know what the attendance number refers to tickets sold or only those that went thru the doors?

Yea HT, I noticed also that the white Thundersticks were sparsly represented but I think that they are the same size they have always been. I must say I don’t know for sure about the size because I’ve never been able to sit in the lower section.

no one here dislikes numbers

even ones posted by newer people. We have various degrees of people enjoying advanced statistics, like any blog site, but the analytical work of a lot of people here is very good, and Ziller might by the guy that likes advanced statistics most.

No one dislikes your numbers; people took issue with the conclusions you drew from your numbers, for various reasons, most notably the small sample size.

You have a choice, you can take the criticism to heart, learn that not everyone here is going to roll over and play dead because you have numbers to back up your conclusions and become a productive member of the community.

Or you can complain that we don’t like numbers here, despite years of evidence to the contrary, and assume we’ve singled you out for dislike because you’re a “numbers guy”.

I, and I think its safe to say, almost everyone else would like you to choose #1. Having another person to break down trends with and discuss where our guys can get better is pretty much what this site is about, but the choice is yours.

Jokes about a lack of conclusions

ForThree is referring to a previous post

Interesting ForThree that I drew not one conclusion and clearly stated that I was in fact only looking at one game. One game and yet all of a sudden it was a prediction or something. People took issue who must not have understood stats all that well. I do, and was not making any conclusions, but that wasn’t the point of my above post.

I was having some fun, making fun, and my musing were not meant as anything more than just a joke. It is OK dude as I enjoy having fun with numbers and that includes joking about the lack of conclusions.

Now be nice or I will sick Seven on you. You should be afraid, very afraid as he is hungry. Three would be a much smaller bite than 6 or 9.

by MustangMBS on Oct 19, 2009 7:22 AM PDT up reply actions

what is a conclusion - clarification

I realize the term conclusion can be interpretted many ways. I made what I considered observations. Observing the rate of scoring per minutes isn’t, to me, a conclusion. Thus, I made no conclusions. Statistical ‘conclusions’ are very different.

Honestly, I think the issue was the use of stats all in the pre-season. Fair enough.

by MustangMBS on Oct 19, 2009 8:21 AM PDT up reply actions

The issue was

That you took the stats from ONE pre-season game, and inferred from that who was our best rebounders and stuff etc. That is what’s wrong with it. It’s called small sample size. You’d want at least half a season done before you began to draw those sort of conclusions. For example if you took the stats from the Golden State game, you’d have Spencer being one of the best rebounders in the league, with JT and Brockman joining him. Also, the style of play in Pre-season is a lot lee focused on winning and more on experimenting.

That’s my take on it. We all enjoy stats (well most of us), they just have to be taken in the right context.

by Aykis16 on Oct 19, 2009 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Shouldn't have been an issue then

As I stated that this was observations from one game. I made no projections on future games of any sort.

I stated right up front that I couldn’t see the game and was trying to understand that ONE pre-season game. I inferred nothing as the one game was the context it should have been fine.

In my opinion people read into it more than was there.

by MustangMBS on Oct 19, 2009 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Ummm

There’s a reason why there is a boxscore. So, I think people read into it what they saw as being presumptuous and jumping the gun. Or at least that’s the feeling I got.

In my opinion people read into it more than was there.
That’s because people take that stuff seriously. If you post it, the assumption is that you’re meaning to analyze that particular set of information. If you only mean it’s half-hearted analysis, that’s fine. But, I got the impression reading that that you took it seriously and drew some conclusions from it.

You have a choice, you can take the criticism to heart, learn that not everyone here is going to roll over and play dead because you have numbers to back up your conclusions and become a productive member of the community, statistically.

I added the statistically because I know that’s what 4-3 meant. The problem is by analyzing numbers, it makes unclear what your intentions are. I have no problem in analyzing numbers from a single game; I did so with regards to the GS game in a comment yesterday. On the other hand, I didn’t make a fanpost about it either.

I’ll assure you of one thing: You better get used to criticism if you want to stick around. Because any opinion you have, you will get heaps of it.
