No Extension for Gay yet
Rudy Gay may not get an extension, so that means you can throw his name into the 2010 hat. As many have noted, a dynamic, defensive minded 3 who can stick it from outside and be a playmaker in clutch situations would be a great addition to this Kings team.

DO. NOT. WANT.
Trust me. The guy makes black hole players look like Steve Nash.

Sorry, meant to do this earlier
While I’m not necessarily sold on Gay, the fact that he’s on the market next summer only means good things for the Kings, even if he isn’t on the Kings radar.
Plus, isn’t he a chucker because he’s basically been forced to be one? I honestly can’t give a fair assesment, because the majority of my knowledge on Rudy Gay is based on demolishing other players with him in NBA2K9. So, really I know nothing, but I still think it’s relevant Kings news, and while he specifically might not be the player the Kings looking for, he definitely fits the mold.

He is young
And he has known only one environment (Memphis-ugh!). He might be a nice 2nd or 3rd option for a team.

His USG rate is above 25%
meaning he has the ball in his hands, the equivalent of one whole quarter. Yet his assist rate is only 8% while his turnover rate is 12.6%. He also has a bad defensive rating of 110 and a True Shooting % of .528.

You should look at Rajon Rondo's numbers sometime
They’re awful in different ways.

I don't see awfulness in Rondo's stats
His assist rate is sky high, rebound rate is phenomenal for a guard, his turnover percentage isn’t too bad for his usage rate, steal rate is great, defensive rating is phenomenal for a point guard. The only thing you can say bad about him is that he happens to be on a team with 3 Hall of Famers, and his stats (most likely Assist and Turnovers) would worsen on a crappier team. Oh ya and his TS% started out awful and is now mediocre, and he’s improved by 3-4% each year in the league.
That being said, I wouldn’t trade for him, especially not this year. I don’t think the impact of playing with KG, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen can be underestimated.

but I would take Rondo. Kid’s a beast.

Reason #1 I wouldn't want Rondo this year
is because he’s going into Free Agency next year, and someone is going to offer him waaaay more than he’s worth.

I dunno
Despite his stats and tendencies to take too many shots, I could see him fitting in with the current rebuild strategy. He would be far from the answer but a very good piece and one of the few FA the Kings could have a shot at.
by Doubl3Dos3 on Oct 20, 2009 11:30 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
If he would be far from the answer,
why would you want to spend all of our cap flexibility on him? Wouldn’t it be better to retain that cap space and use it to help trade for someone who is the answer or or at least close to it?

Right now
I’d be willing to bet that the Kings will likely just not spend that space and let it roll over when they start having to pay Spencer the next season so that their payroll doesn’t bloat as it had in the past.
That would be my guess.

Sadly that will probably end up being the case
But it would be sweeeeeeeet if the Kings do try to make a splash. It’s really their last opportunity to acquire a summer time free agent, because every year after they’ll have to extend Hawes, JT, Evans, Lottery pick as well as Brockman, Casspi and Greene in those intervals.
Next summer they will be in the unique position of having 4 really good players, 4 more pretty good players, a high draft pick and one last gasp of cap space. I vote they go for it: pick up a big time 3 or 4 to put the team on the map. Yes, they’ll be vastly overspending for the next 4 years, but they would also have a legit contender with room to improve.
The Kings will basically be in the position Portland was this summer, though with less certified success but more upside and a larger pool of available players. Portland tried to get Hedo, why shouldn’t the Kings go after Gay or someone else for that matter? It would be fantastic if the Kings added another key player to bring the rain. It would also strengthen their bargaining, as they would be even less reliant on any one player and could save a little bit on everyone’s extensions.
If Lamarcus doesn’t get a deal, I think the Kings should consider pursuing him also. It’s a long shot, but it’s a shot.
Free agency is great. Yeah, you way overpay for talent – but you don’t have to sacrifice anything other than cash to get that talent. For the Kings to get a number one piece, they’d have to sacrifice way too much, but if it’s for a relatively young player who fits a need and moves the team to we-will-compete-for-the-next-five-years status, I think it makes sense to pull the trigger.
When the Kings win, they sell seats. When those seats were selling, the Kings were perfectly willing to go past the luxury tax. I don’t think it’s beyond the realm of possibility for the Kings to make a move.
Honestly, I’m not sure if they’ll have the cap space to offer sufficient money though, with Frisco’s deal kicking in next year.

I'd be down for going after Aldridge if he doesn't get an extension
unless we have a shot at Derrick Favors.

Several things
Cisco’s deal already has kicked in. It’s the real reason the Kings didn’t have cap space this summer. (You want an explanation for no cap space? Read this, and this.)
Portland tried to get Hedo, why shouldn’t the Kings go after Gay or someone else for that matter?
Because it’s overkill. I would rather the Kings develop their talent within, or find a player who absolutely complements the roster in ways that matter. But, to get that player you don’t have to have a ton of cap room, and the MLE should be just fine to acquire a fit in/role player that does everything the Kings would ask of Noc/Mason/Casspi/Greene now. Gay is not that guy.
To me, the best chance of that star the Kings “really” need is Derrick Favors (as Aykis already mentions), or a different big through the draft. Again, Gay is a scorer. I don’t think the Kings are in a great need of guys who put the ball in the hole and do little else.
It would be fantastic if the Kings added another key player to bring the rain. It would also strengthen their bargaining, as they would be even less reliant on any one player and could save a little bit on everyone’s extensions.
Gotta disagree with this point, although not because I think you’re wrong. What you’re stating, I believe, is the perception. The reality is that the best way to screw a player on an extension is to not offer him what he wants. Signing a player to a Free Agent contract is not necessarily the best way to do that.
I don’t really think an outside FA is going to help the Kings because they have a lot of things already covered:Backcourt stud in Evans, great outside shooter/offensive threat in Martin, Front court depth in Hawes & JT, and some fit in talent at the 3 in Noc/Mason/Casspi and Greene. That’s all 5 positions, and the worst part about that team is the lack of interior defense. (Or as far as anybody can tell.)
Hence Derrick Favors. He blocks a lot of shots, or did in HS, rebounds at a high rate, and has some scoring abilities.
I do agree with this:
When the Kings win, they sell seats. When those seats were selling, the Kings were perfectly willing to go past the luxury tax. I don’t think it’s beyond the realm of possibility for the Kings to make a move.
I agree that that prospect would probably motivate a FA signing.
I disagree with that:
Free agency is great. Yeah, you way overpay for talent – but you don’t have to sacrifice anything other than cash to get that talent.
Just like Beno Udrih right?
There’s a time to be patient, and a time to make a move. I’d much rather the Kings wait until 2011 to make a FA move.

That's fine too
If the Kings have a chance to make a big FA acquisition in 2011, then yeah – they should wait. But if the cap space is going to disappear under Shawes extension, then I say use it before we lose it. For some reason I thought 2010 would be the Kings last gasp.
Also, it’s so good to have you back to call me on my bullshit. It keeps me on my toes, and alerts me that I need to step my game up.
Victory is tasty.
by iashwash on Oct 20, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well there is no guarantee that 2010 ISN'T the last gasp
The problem I have is that the Kings need an All-Star caliber player up front who can impact the game defensively. Our Bill Russell if you will. That isn’t coming from FA IW, and you aren’t nearly that stupid. (I know because, well, I’m God. But that’s a different discussion for a different time.)
Anyway, just to use cap space because you have it seems to be a poor reason to use cap space. Look at Portland this summer. They were desperate to sign Hedo Turkoglu. Lost out. They were desperate to sign Paul Millsap, and really just cost Utah some money this season. They settle for Andre Miller who might make a bigger impact than either Turkoglu or Millsap ever could.
So, call me skeptical that a big FA splash is what the Kings would need next summer. They have a backcourt that will probably scare the league if Reke is improving at the rate I think we all see him improving at. Kevin Martin, if healthy, is dangerous for this team. A FA doesn’t really help that bro.
Oh, well, the information is what I’m here for. I just smack you on the beak a few times for fun.

I want to see the kid play college ball first but make sure to make some room on the Derrick Favors bandwagon for me.

Ditto on both counts
I, too, want to see what he does at GA Tech before I annoit him as a savior. But, usually, these top of the draft kids don’t slide unless they were never that good to begin with. BJ Mullens is that kind of example that works.

I am not enamored by Derrick Favors at all
If he shows some polish, strength, and MORE explosiveness in college, then I’ll be proven wrong. But for now his frame is too slender, too weak, can’t bang with bigs down low, and doesn’t have the explosiveness to jump over the big boys.
Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!

LOL
Don’t say Favors isn’t explosive. You can say he’s too slender, right now, but he’s also 18. Most Freshman Athletes grow. And he’s not weak. But whatever. Let’s watch him dominate College Ball. I think I might like Favors more than John Wall.
