Nocioni's interview with Argentine sports paper "Ole"
This is my first post here. it's an interview Nocioni did with Ole. Originally I was just going to link to this in a FanShot but then I decided to translate it. It's not perfect but I figured it was better than a Google translation. He talks about the callenges he thinks the team will face, his dificulties in finding motivation for the year and his role in the team.
This is the original interview in Spanish.
And this is my translation.
You can hear it in his voice. Andres Nocioni is a born competitor, a winner. But 8 days away from the beginning of his 7th N.B.A season he has few reasons to be exultant. What he sees in Sacramento after 4 pre-season games (1-3) and a month worth of work doesn’t lend itself for optimism. “It’s going to be a tough season. I’m here and I have to play and try to make the best of it, but I know it’s going to be really hard to get wins. We are not the most talented team so we all need to give 100% all the time to have a chance to win".
Ole: What do you like about the team and what are you worried about?
Noc: It’s a young squad aside for myself and a couple other guys. There’s a lot of potential and we could get better but we’re not there yet. There are a couple of quality bigs in Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes, but we are still lacking experience in the paint. We also need Kevin Martin to be his old self and for everyone to give 100%.
Ole: Are the young guys committed and respectful or is it going to be hard to get the utmost effort out of them?
Noc: Right now we are only at the beginning of the season so everyone is trying to play hard, work hard and win. We’ll have to see if at mid-season when things aren’t going as planned, that stays the same. It’s going to be hard but I hope that we can keep the effort up throughout the year.
Ole: Is it harder for you to find motivation in your current situation?
Noc: It’s harder than if I were in a team with a better chance to compete. But you have to try to find motivation where you can. You always want to get better, especially after my last season. It’s going to be hard though, since this is not the best team to do it.
Ole: Where do you find motivation?
Noc: I want to improve from last season and also get to the World Cup in the best shape possible.
Ole: Is it important for you to leave last season behind you? You admitted that it was the worst in your career.
Noc: Yes. I want to have a good season because of that and also to get to Turkey more relaxed and confident, even though it seems so far in the future.
Ole: How is the knee?
Noc: It’s fine. Fortunately there’s no sign of the tendinitis. All the work I put in in Argentina has paid off.
Ole: And how has your game been in the pre-season?
Noc: Fine. I’m still lacking flexibility, so my game has suffered a bit but i’m getting there.
Ole: Have you spoken with coach Westphal as to what will be your role in the team? He has already stated that you are not going to start.
Noc: Yes, he wants me coming off the bench, and what he asks of me is the same that Skiles asked of me in Chicago: to play the best defense I can, sink my open shots and bring all my energy, my hustle. The same I always did.
Ole: Do you feel that your competitive nature could be an asset to this young team that could end up losing a lot?
Noc: Yes, that’s one thing that’s asked of me. My drive to compete and win is one of my most important contributions.
Ole: How do you get that across?
Noc: Day to day, game to game with my hustle. I’m not very vocal on or off the court.
Ole: Westphal surprised us by saying you are neither an SF or a PF, but you can be effective in both positions. What do you think about that?
Noc: (thinking about it) I don’t know why he said that. I’ve played both position all my life without problems. As a wing I only have a hard time with the smaller SFs, because of their speed. But a lot of players have the same problem. NBA rules don’t let you go into a full-on zone defense, so there’s a lot a court to cover out there, making it harder to defend one-on-one.
Ole: Are you going to play more SF or PF? Will you get more playing time as a result of Garcia’s injury?
Noc: Coach told me that I was going to play SF 75% of the time and PF 25% of the time, and I don’t think that will change because of Garcia’s injury. Maybe a little because we will have to split his minutes, but I don’t anticipate a big change in my role because of it.
So anyways, that's it. I hope that someone finds this interesting. If someone speaks Spanish and notices that something is wrong let me know in the comments.

You are welcome. I just thought it could be interesting to post this here because the last time Noc spoke with Ole it caused a lot of controversy.

I'd personally like it a lot more
if his biggest motivation wasn’t getting ready for the World Cup. I’d like one statement in the interview where he says, “It doesn’t matter where I’m at, or what the situation, I’m going to give 100%.”
What I hear is, “I’m stuck here and my team sucks. If only we had good players who gave 100%, I might be motivated to play.” Ummm, let’s see, dude, we are a team in desperate need of a starting small forward, and you are so much better than everyone else that you . . . come off the bench? Yeah, sounds like you’re head and shoulders above everyone else.
I’m sorry this is not the kind of player a young team needs. He’s practically predicting that midway through the season the rest of the team will be as unmotivated as he is. He was with a contendor and he played with so much motivation that they got rid of him. I say we trade him before his cancer eats into the rest of the team. If that’s his version of truth, it’s not what this team (or any team in my opinion) needs.
You can be down on Mason as much as you want, but here is a veteran making far less than Noc, dealing with pain, and still coming out and playing 100%. And I don’t hear him whining to the press about how it will be hard to find motivation. How about personal pride?

pretty harsh
I see your point but I think you’re painting it in the most negative way possible.
A vet like him who’s done his time wants a chance to contend, its understandable.
But I do see your point.

Carumba!
1 -I read that Noce is a seasoned professional not in the best of circumstances (d’uh!) and he plans to make the best of it, because that is what he does, he plays hard, that is who he is, but boy, wouldn’t it be more fun to go into a season for a team that is among the League’s best?
2- Would it be wonderful to have him say how this is just great and he is so very excited to be here and he expects the Kings to win much more than others expect? Yes. Let’s give him one of Pookey’s pom-poms.
3- it is a hypenated word, pom-pom. And the more I look at, and the original context I notice that in this font that the letters “r” and “n” together look like an “m”. This makes the corrected and more logical change to porn porn Pookey. Now all is right in the world.

I agree with lttg here
i think you’re painting too negative a picture. This is a young team, and anyone would be foolish to believe that they will alot out of the gate. Do you really think that’s the case SB? (I doubt it.)
I think what he meant to say (and it might be lost in the translation or by the translator—doesn’t really make a difference unless you speak fluent Spanish and were there at the interview), is that right now the team is talking about winning, but after losing for awhile it tends to beat down teams. It’s hard to argue with that.
I’m not trying to be Pom Pom Pookey today. It’s just that this team will lose a lot of games, and that tends to wear greatly on young players and rebuilding franchises/fanbases. I don’t think Noc is being inaccurate in that statement.

Maybe, I'm being too harsh
The thing is, I really wanted to like this guy. I think most Sac fans felt that way. He was supposed to be all grit and hustle. I know it’s tough to go to a losing team, but there are a lot of things to be excited about here. He could really be a team leader. When the last interview came out, I convinced myself he was just venting and taken out of context. But this is so much of the same all over again.
The reporter gave him a dozen softballs to say that he was a standup guy who understands that he is making more money every year than an average person makes in a lifetime, that he wishes he was playing for a ring but that he will still give 100%. Does he really need to “find” motivation? The best players motivate themselves even when their team is not very good.

I don't think it makes a difference long term if Casspi or Greene (or worse both)
develops as players. I do think that the Kings saving money on a long term contract will be a reason to deal him.

The vision in my head of Pom Pom Pookey
is almost too much to bear.
I can see Noc ‘s point. First of all the Spanish mag interview last spring really wasn’t particularly negative, although like this one it was very frank. There is nothing that indicates he’s going to give less than 100%. He is in the prime of his career, stuck on a young rebuilding team. Even if he has his best season ever, the Kings are still not going to sniff the playoffs. He has to know that he isn’t in the team’s long term plans and that either this season or next he is going to be trade bait ending up somewhere and that he has no control of where he lands.
I think if this team starts to make some noise, wins some games they are not expected to win and start to get some positive national recognition his attitude will improve. Ending up in Sac with Natt ,at our lowest point, had to be like being sent to basketball purgatory. He is a good enough player that his expectations have to be higher than most itinerant journeymen NBA hoopsters, just grateful to be drawing the vet’s minimum. I say give Noc some slack and with a full pre season with the team behind him, lets see what he can do.

Agree 100%
I don’t want to make excuses for the guy, but bear in mind that for international players that had a succesfull career before joining the league is tougher to adapt to the fact that they have no control whatsoever as to where they are traded.
And even though the tone of the interview was pretty bleak, he kept saying that he was going to give 100%. It’s just that he was used to be in competitive teams, so being in a rebuilding team must take some adjustment.
PS: don’t read to much as to the whole World Cup as main motivation. Members of the Argentine national team are always bombarded with questions regardidng internatitonal competiton. In fact there was a whole excerpt I didn’t translate that dealt exclusevely with the World Cup, so it makes sense that he would give answers that relate to that.

do you ever get the feeling
that Nocioni is more candid because he is saying in his own language to a paper/ media outlet from his own country? In other words, he is thinking “nobody will read this in Sacramento anyway so who gives an F”.
I don’t mean that in a bad way, just pointing it out. I live in China and I know there are certain things I do or say here probably for better and worse that I wouldn’t do or say in the US, especially in media, probably because somewhere in my mind I know nobody back home will see it or read it.
It makes for great interviews.

You have a point
And also you have to consider that he may simply be trying to lower the expectations of his fans in Argentina. Over here Noc is regarded as highly as Ginobili or Scola-sometimes even more so. He could simply be saying to his fans “don’t expect that much from me this season”.
by Edg5 on Oct 21, 2009 4:32 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No,
rather, spanish(I speak it) is a more ‘blunt’ language when translated into English. For instance, if someone’s fat they say “el gordo”, in english you might say they’re not fat, rather “big boned”. IMO America is much more eager to take offense and much more geared towards being “PC” in their words.
by Smills91 on Oct 21, 2009 6:26 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You also have to take into account the nature of spanish press
They like to take things out of context and twist wordings to paint the picture they like.

He doesn't give the impression of being much of a locker room presence
No doubt he’ll be competitive on the floor, but I didn’t hear anything at all that could be interpreted as “I like my team-mates and really want to work with them.” Instead I sort of get the sense that the moment the final horn sounds, he’ll just retire quietly to the locker room with an immovable scowl.

Not Impressed.
Our biggest weakness as team could be our lack of legitimate star-quality starting SF. We need a dynamic presence at the ‘3’, to take pressure of the young bigs and a rookie PG. If Andres was a more skilled and consistent player, he could command the starting SF role and be part of the solution, instead of part of the problem seemingly pessimistic about the team’s potential.

Well
They were the worst team in the league last year. It’s not exactly like you see a lot of people on StR saying, “playoffs or bust!” or “if we don’t get to .500, blow up the team again!”
I thought Noc was very realistic in the interview and I like that.

While I agree that Noce is not at his most positive or optimistic here,
you have to consider that he was just as blunt and as candid when he was with a contender in Chicago. In fact, he said that, as long as he was starting, the Bulls were in trouble because their best team wasn’t on the floor to start the game.
True, I’m extremely biased towards the guy. And part of the reason why I like him is that he doesn’t say what people want to hear. He says what he actually feels and thinks.

Nocioni has bugged me for a long time
to get my bias out there upfront.
He seems to always have someone else to complain about. It seems obvious for all concerned he’s biding his time until he can be moved; if he does it quietly and professionally, I’m ok with that.
I hope he’s gone sooner rather than later though.
