Game reflections from 201
A mixed bag during this game. Despite a horrible second quarter we stayed competitive. Some thoughts, reflections, and break down by quarters.
OK guys… First of all the questions is answered about whether or not Tyreke can guard Deron Williams. Not only can get guard him, but CAN he guard him. We have a premier defender here. He stuffed, STUFFED Williams in the first quarter and then he turned on a dime at the other end and smoked him. That was pretty much the last one on one guarding of Evans tonight. There were usually two people between him and the basket after that.
So, Tyreke really did well defensively, but the prize for best defense goes to Omri. He was all over the place and in people’s faces (sorry for the rhyming, left over limerickitis). He also had the most surprising and versatile ability to defend everybody from the PG, SG, and SF. This included doing a good job on Maynor, Williams, and Boozer. I was also pretty surprise to see that Noc and Omri play very well together. They were passing to each other and pretty in sync. I really liked it when Sergio and these two guys were on the floor. Sergio really sets up the 3 for Noc very well. He did it within second of being in the game and the scoring rate shot way up, but more on that in a few. Also, it should be no surprise that Noc can guard Kirilenko, Boozer, and Milsap.
The starting bigs were JT and May. This actually worked pretty well. JT has come so far along. He is a much, MUCH more complete player. He did really well and May did OK. He cleaned up some nice rebounds, but I would not say that he is an impact player… He did, however, play much better than Hawes who came off the bench to miss just about every shot. He missed so many free throws I couldn’t believe it. Pretty terrible actually.
OK, some thoughts by the quarters of play…
The first quarter our guys started off strong and stayed right with the Jazz scoring wise. But then the second quarter happened. I was frustrated. I know that some of it was Beno because he ran the game at PG most of the second quarter, but it could have been more than just that. I hope that PW was running outside play sets cause the Kings had NO inside game going on. It was 3 point shot after shot and they only made less than 20%. When Beno took over the score was Kings 24 and Jazz 28. I kept track of the score and while Beno ran the game, in just a few minutes, the Jazz went up 9 points to 37 while the Kings only hit 4 points for 28. Right at the end of the half Evan took the ball, just took it and drove, and scored 4 fast points driving to the hole. Another two points and the half ended up with Kings 34 and the Jazz 48. Beno really did awful… It was pretty brutal to watch. I am pretty sure he sat the rest of the game.
The third quarter was interesting… This quarter started with Evans, Omri, Noc Brockman, and JT. This line up stayed even in scoring with the Jazz, but then Evans got hurt and sat for a while. Man the Jazz are physical. Sergio came in and while in the Kings scored twice as many points as the Jazz, 11 points to their 6. He really sets up shooters really well. Noc really benefited from some nice 3 point shots setup by Sergio. Evans came back in toward the last part of the quarter with Mason Omri, Noc, and JT. That line up worked pretty well. We scored 13 to their 12 points, but could not stop Milsap. He kept hitting shots from the top of the key. We came back from our really BAD second quarter and ended the quarter at 65 to their 71 points.
The fourth quarter things got big and physical. We had Evan, Mason, May, JT, and Hawes. Brockman also came in for a while. This was to match up with Maynor, Williams, Fesenko, Koufos, and Milsap. I think Okur was also in for a while. The Jazz banged away and it got tough. Brockman took a hit to the face and was pretty hurt, but this was after he drove the ball like linebacker into the paint. It was a pretty slow game. Not very much transition. PW tried to go small against these bigs with Sergio, and Casspi coming in, but it really didn’t work. Not like earlier. I think that Sergio plays better without Evans on the floor. As weird as that may sound, but then maybe not. He needs shooter to set up and is damned good at it. Sergio came back out and things ground to a finish. Omri drove for some points and then hit a 3, but it wasn’t enough in the end. We lost.
All in all I have a lot of mixed feelings about this game. Watching it showed that we really have some big gaps in our roster and some of the players really need to step up. Evans and Omri get a passing grade and I liked Sergio early in the game. The latter part wasn’t as good for him.
It seemed like PW didn’t want Evans to drive as much. He just didn’t try to break down the defense like he has in the past. It was much more set plays and a half court passing game from outside in and not inside out. Kind of disappointing to me as it did not really take advantage of Evans abilities, IMHO.

I am a little worried about Hawe's head
after what seems to be a demotion. I don’t think him coming off the bench is a wise move even if the rotation is better. Anybody else worried.
BYW very nice analysiss, it helps, I missed the broadcast. thanks,

Hawe's play in preseason,
hasn’t been very good. Its hard to reward a guy for poor performance. At 21 years old he should expect to come off the bench.
I agree though his mental toughness does seem bruised. I’m not a big Hawe’s fan so my opinion may be slighted. Maybe he needs a session with Tony Robbins.
Unfortunately, we are weakest at the center position and need his size to match up with many teams.
I anticipate a trade for a big man around the dead line and possibly a pick-up in the draft.
I think its incumbent on Hawe’s to work his tail off all season if expects to play serious minutes next year. I hope he can rise to the occassion.
I’m still pissed off about summer league.

I think we're overreacting a little bit about Hawes
The dude has a couple of bad preseason games and people are jumping all over him.

also at the game
and for chunks of time Dwill was guarding Omri. Why we refused to get him the ball against the much smaller Williams I don’t know.
Also noticed a serious lack of boxing out on the defensive glass. I say all these things without knowing the box score.
Hawes looked out of place on offense, and our whole team felt lack they lacked communication on defense. There were some nice individual plays made, like JT stuffing an AK47 dunk attempt, and Evans had a steal or two.
Casspi looked comfortable with the ball in his hands and made good decisions against some double teams.
Green had a real nice alley oop that got the crowd up.
Sean May was taking a lot of outside jumpers early, perhaps a step or two closer is a better range for him as he stroked one of those.
If we had been able to hit some of our open 3 pt attempts, we could have stayed closer. That and a healthy Kevin Martin might have made for an exciting finish

All good points
Casspi did not get the ball much and that was a mistake. He shows great potential and they need to set him up more often on mismatches and spot shooting. He missed a few early on, but then hit much better later.
Hawes was completely out of it and I hope he steps up. He did play some decent defense on a few patches. His offense however…
Thanks for pointing out the dunks and blocks. That JT block was awesome!
I agree with you that with Kevin Martin this would have been a better game.

Good write up
A lot of great observations, especially your points on Casspi’s defense.
Regarding your last paragraph, I think Evans not driving was more a function of Utah’s defensive adjustments than Westphal’s play calling. This really shows the importance of Kevin Martin to Tyreke Evans, and vice versa. Had the Jazz decided to clamp down on Evans with Martin on the floor, Martin would have made them pay dearly. Conversely, the presence of Martin probably would have prevented Utah from making the adjustment on Evans in the first place.

Very good point
The Jazz really did collapse on any driving. Evans and Martin do play well and off each other for exactly the reason you state above.

Not having a shooter that can backup Martin is going to hurt all year
Beno is too inconsistant for a 2. And his best shot is FT line in. Cisco’s lose will be costly, and now don’t beat me up over this, we’re going to miss Salmon.

Salmons
I dont think Salmons’s style of play would be as complementary as Martin’s is to Rekes. I think they would be too similar in their tendency to drive and kick.
But I was suprised when I went and looked at Salmon’s 3PT% last year (41.7% on 300 attempts). It all seems like so long ago. Hopefully Noc or Casspi (and I guess Greene fits in there somewhere) can provide some outside shooting to capitalize off Reke’s drives-n-kicks.
by DustyG on Oct 26, 2009 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Casspi and Noc
I have to agree. Salmons may be a better shooter than Beno, but I think that both Noc and Casspi will work better because of their style.
I think they both do better in the game with Evans and Sergio than Beno will do (or that Salmons would do). Neither Evans or Sergio is a major outside threat or shooter and these guys need shooters to set up.
Beno and Salmons like to drive and we have that in Evans… Who seems to be better at it than either of them.
by MustangMBS on Oct 26, 2009 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I saw plenty of Salmons drives . . . .
but kicks?
I agree with HT. We will lose a lot of games we might have won because Cisco isn’t there to contribute off the bench (sigh). Casspi is going to make up for a lot of that but . . . .

Good point...
Salmons was mostly a black hole. Hopefully Casspi can provide that intensity and spark as well as some of the skills that The Cisco Kid brings…like ballhandling and shooting. He could surpass Cisco fairly quickly as a playmaker.

Defensively as well
He will really add a lot defensively as well. Just wait until you see this guy play. He is intense and active. He covered Deron Williams quite well. He didn’t stuff him like Evans did, but he certainly wasn’t schooled and held hi own.
I have thought that Cisco was probably the best all around and complete player. Not great at any one thing, but good at almost everything. Casspi is going to be similar in that way. A very well rounded game.

It's not just offense
As DustyG pointed out, Salmons was as good a 3pt shooter as Cisco or Noc. Yes, he did have a tendency to drive into traffic, but Martin was out and he was the man. He wasn’t getting open shots and had to create his own shot, with no help form our PG.
But, defensively he was better than anyone we have on the team right now. So, witn Martin sitting, and Tyreke driving into the lane, having Noc in the corner & Salmon up top as 3pt options, looks pretty good compared to Beno.

Here's the thing HT
Salmons didn’t create the matchup issue’s that Reke does though. Plus, Salmons didn’t shoot the 3 nearly as well in prior season’s either.
Reke is a far better rebounder period than Salmons is. In 37.5 mins last season, Salmons averaged 4.2 rebounds. For a guy playing SF, that is not good. Reke averaged 5.4 boards at Memphis. Plus, if you look at pre-season totals for Reke on the boards, he averaged 4.9 this pre-season. In more than 5 mins less on the court.
That alone makes the Kings a better team having a better rebounder than Salmons on the court. Even if it’s the guy who’s playing PG.

I can't argue
But we were talking about have Beno or Salmons as backup 2. Whatever Salmons past 3pt shooting percentage was, I can’t believe it wasn’t better than Beno’s.

I take Salmons any day. You are absolutely right about him defensively. I really hated to lose that one on one defensive strength when he left.

Nice write up Mustang
It’s great to get different viewpoints up right after the game. I refused to listen to one more game on the radio/Yahoo box score. It sounds from what I’ve read tonight that ’Reke continues to play better than anticipated (and expectations were high) JT is bringing it every night, Omri is our new potential guy, Noc is playing like the high level journeyman we expected in the trade, this year may be the year the Kevin actually ties the whole thing together and we have a whole new team.
That’s all fine and when I can actually watch a game will probably will be exciting and encouraging but it leaves us short a center and a bench that at least from what I have read doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence or provide much depth. It seems Sergio and Sean May will provide more value than expected. It was great to hear that Noc and Sergio were playing well off each other. Cisco and Noc had a three game run last season where they really played well together.
This may be what Spencer needs to get motivated but it’s about the last thing I was expecting. It’s going to be weird to see he and Beno sulking on the bench together along with K9 (woof) who has probably gotten philosophical about riding the pine.
My anticipation is high, my expectations are low. My hope for the season is that we see a team that is developing chemistry, plays to win even though they will lose often, hustles every night and at the end of the season we will see the foundation of the team that is yet to be. It is going to be exciting and frustrating and while I think I can live with rookie mistakes I also thought I could accept losing last season as long as we got better. We just lost.
‘Reke is the real deal and is the best rookie we’ve ever had during the Sacramento era. It almost hurts to look forward too far because he’s going to be that good and I hope we give him the pieces he’ll need to be great.

Yep
I agree with everything you said. I think that watching the games are going to be both exciting as we have some good players and frustrating as a lot of them are young who are still learning. Also, this team is just now coming together.
I see chemistry starting, but we aren’t there yet. Once this team starts to really come together it will be better.

Hawes
Anybody know if Hawes is still getting over an injury, was it his ankle? His shot was way off and after reading other people’s comments and reflecting I think this guy may still be hurting.
I won’t hold this against him if that is the case. I was kind of jumping on the trade Noc bandwagon a bit, but then heard he was just getting over minor knee surgery. Having had knee surgery I know it is never minor. Just less severe. Probably a cartilage cleanup. of a tear or something. Glad to see him back on his game now.
Hawes may need some time though… Be interesting to know what is going on.

But Hawes is immature. He may need some time to adjust to being a bench player regardless fo the reason. Could be an opportunity for him to grow up a little and realize that humility is actually a useful trait.

I'm not sure Hawes is looking at this as punishment
And, I’m not sure that it’s totally do to his performance. It might just be an experiment on PW’s part to try to keep at least one of his two big’s on the court all the time.
Waituntil the regular season is a week or two old before we get a handle on what the rotation is really going to be like. We’ve seen a lot of different lineups, and I’m just not sure if this is the final one. The best one is JT & Spencer, but PW has said more than once that he’s short on bigs. So, having Spencer available to come off the bench for May or JT, isn’t the worst option.

Hawes said after the Laker game that he's ok
but the reason he missed the dunk on the alley-oop was that he was a little stiff and hadn’t regain all his lift. ( all 3 inches of it ).
You know sometimes it’s not just the player but the competition. When your the only guy over 6’7" on the floor going against the likes of Okur, Fresenko, Koufos, Boozer, & Millsap, your probably not going to have a good game.
What seems to be a trend so far in preseason is, that if Hawes makes one of his first couple of 3’s he’ll continue to put them up. If he misses the firest two he stops. So, if he doesn’t have his outside shot going and he has to go inside against bigger stronger centers & PF he doesn’t score inside either. And, Utah’s defense is pretty good at stopping our guards from getting the ball to our bigs down low. They are known for their tough interior D and Sloan doesn’t have weak players.

Utah can be known for tough interior defense
But Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur do not necessarily keep interior offensive options from scoring.
What Utah still does is foul teams a lot, and play they physical.

However they accomplish it isn't important
The fact is that Spencer played 19 mins. , May played 19, Brockman played 12, and JT played 35 and we had a total of 30 pts in the paint. Consistering that Tyreke, Omri, Greene & Noc scores some of those 30 pts in the paint, our bigs did very litlle damage inside. Not just Spencer.

I enjoyed watching Brockman flatten one of the Jazz into a pancake… Hmmm… Don’t get in from of Mancakes or he will eat you alive. It really looked like he was playing football. Ducked his head and went for it. Nice!
JT actually scored a decent amount off of rebounds. He has stopped dribbling after every rebound and just goes up for the bucket now. It was really nice to see. I am thinking that more of his points are likely to be unassisted if he keeps up the development. He really is getting there.
Thanks for the stats HT. I have not spent too much time looking, but knew the Jazz fouled a lot.
