Artest Trade Revisted
Back when it went down, quite a few people complained about what Petrie got in return for for Ron-Ron. I felt it was about as good as we could get, but quite a few people felt we should have gotten more, likening it to the Bibby trade (which was pretty bad in retrospect).
Now, however, I think this move deserves a second look.
Houston rented Artest for a playoff run, and then let him go for nothing. They swung for the fences and missed, so the trade from their end can't be considered a success.
We received 2 late first rounders for Ron-Ron and an expiring contract. Donte was one of those, and I don't think he will amount to much, but Omri is making the deal look pretty good. I believe he could become a top flight starter at the 3 (from what I have read/heard). The deal was risky because late firsts can be a crapshoot.; however, Petrie is at his best evaluating talent, so I think this was a pretty good move.
It is still too early to tell, but I am beginning to think we got the better end of this one, and it could end up being a potentiel steal if Omri continues to develop.

i never got this..
Why does it matter that Houston only rented him and let him go for nothing? Shouldn’t the part that matters be what WE got, not what they did?

Because if we didn't trade him
we wouldn’t have gotten anything other than his expiring contract.

Instantly a good trade for the Kings
That’s my opinion. Two 1st Rnd picks for Ron-Ron who was already out the door. Also believe they traded him just in time. If they had waited til the trade deadline I don’t believe they would have received anything of interest because half the league was dumping players just to get money off the books.

Good point...
I still think we would have gotten offers from teams going to the playoffs, but I don’t think we would have gotten two first rounders.

Not really...
If I remember correctly, it took awhile for KMart to really shine (we also had loads of talent back then).

Martin
came off the bench his first year. Played 45 games, averaged 10 minutes a game. 2.9 points a game.

Houston essentially got Ariza in a sign and trade
pretty successful

Maybe...
If you are sold on Ariza…which I’m not.
Ariza without Kobe, Odom, Pau, Fisher, Bynum etc. may not be a pretty sight.

Oh he's at least a solid NBA player
We haven’t proven we got that out of it yet, though whatever happens with Donte’ I’m pretty convinced Casspi is a solid rotation guy at least.

It was pretty
Last night anyway. 25 points in 39 minutes in a winning effort.

Not really a sign and trade.
Houston could have signed Ariza this offseason without giving up anything last year, so you can’t really say they swapped Artest for Ariza, and Ariza is worth 2 first rounders. If that was the plan all along, they would have been much better off not trading for Artest and then signing Ariza as free agent. Then they would have had both of their first rounders as well as Ariza.
Bottom line: they received 1 season of Artest and gave up 2 first rounders for it. If Casspi keeps playing like he is now, we hit on one of the late first rounders and got the better end of the deal, IMHO.

Don't forget
In addition to the 2 first rounders (Donte and Omri) we also got a year of B-Jax instead of another year of Ron-Ron. Given the fact we were going to lose a ton of games anyway, I’m glad we had B-Jax there in as a presense the locker room and in the gym. I think this may be a big plus in the development of our young players. The Kings front office obviously agreed which is why Bobby was hired for an internal position.
The jury’s still out…but no matter how you slice it Ron-Ron was done in Sactown and had to go.

don't forget
Ron is a lunatic, I would wonder that buy his leaving that wasn’t reward in itself?
I think Houston made the same decison, great talent but you can’t rely on him
Time will tell if Ron can ever handle success re the Lakers this year, it would be fair to say it will be interesting but can a leopard really change his spots?
