Donte Greene
A true fan will never go out on a limb saying that he suck. Donte is a very young player who will be a great player in the very near future. How do I know, he had the best teacher who taught him how to handle the ball, play defense, make good shot selection, and play as a team member not an individual. His teacher was his mom an awesome power forward who took the game to the opposition and one day very soon he will be a force to be reckon with on the court.
Donte's drive to the basket reminds me of one of his mom's signature move and what he is lacking the force behind that move and with more practice and patience he can achieve and own the low post. All you haters or so call fans I don't see you out there playing and shame on you for not supporting your team good or bad. They will have off nights and it's very hard on them for not performing at their best and you adding negativity makes them doubt themselves.
I applaud all the athletes out there giving their very best at any given time. Donte you accomplished the goal you set for yourself while in the 5th grade at Yokota, Japan, you said to me "I will be playing in the NBA one day" and you are living your dreams with your mom watching you from heaven. You go out there and do your very best and remember what your mom taught you and keep her in your heart especially out on the court. She lived for the game and you are making us all very proud of you teachers included for achieving your goal.
All you non-playing, arm chair sideline wanna be basketball players try encouraging your players instead of name calling, this is a sign of your low self-esteem and your actions says alot about you as a human being. Get a life and if you all true fans you will accept your team winning or losing.

Evie
Thanks for joining STR. It’s great to have your insight, and I know how it feels to have others criticize those close to you. Just a couple of thoughts.
1) If you read that actual post titled, “Donte Sucks” you would have seen that it was not saying that at all. It was about people who are critical of their team. In essence, it was saying, “Donte, does not suck.”
2) If you’ve read this forum at all, or attended games, you will find that there is no more supportive group of NBA fans anywhere. If Donte were playing in cities like New York, Philly, Chicago, etc, he would have been shredded by now. Nearly all of us are huge Donte supporters. We love the kid, and really want him to succeed. We would like nothing more than to see him reach the expectations from his college play.
3) All that said, even friends and family of Donte must realize that making an NBA team is only the first step in what I’m sure he hopes will be a long career. This is not an end, it is just a beginning. If Donte wants to succeed, he still has a lot of work to do. I think he can do it, but it won’t come by patting himself on the back for “making it.” It will come through hard work and lots of practice.
4) Finally, if the only people who could comment on an NBA player were people who had played in the NBA, it would be a very small crowd at the games. I write novels for a living and I am regularly criticized by people who have never written a book. That’s their right, because they paid for the work. I may not like everything they say, but I know the good comes with the bad. Not everyone will love every book.
You sound like my mom, who hates it when anyone writes anything bad about one of my books. I think it’s great that Donte had someone like you supporting him, and I hope you’ll tell him that he is greatly loved here in Sactown. We may complain when he has a bad game, but we all dream of him breaking out and becoming an All-Star.
Best,
J Scott Savage

Nope. I don’t even go by Scott. Just plain Jeff. It’s just that another author named Jeff Savage has written about 200 kids sports books. So that name was kind of taken.

Maybe I should cut and paste my comments from the Douby thread.
Playing in the NBA is a privilege, not a right. When a person decides to enter the NBA draft, they are hoping to become a PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYER. Being a professional basketball player comes with perks like fame and fortune but it also comes with responsibilities that many players don’t take seriously enough. The Maloofs sign Donté Greene’s pay check but, that check is backed by the loyal fans who pay entrance fees, buy hot dogs and jerseys, watch the games on TV and listen on the radio. We are those fans.
When Donté Greene accepted that $870,000 last season of our hard earned money and then started receiving portions of his $930,700 salary for this season, he entered into a contract with us as well as the Brothers Maloof. Now, maybe Donté is confused with what we fans want out of him so let me share with you what this fan would like to see.
1. Productive minutes in both practice and during whatever minutes he garners on the floor. By productive, I don’t mean 20 points a game, I mean helping this team win by giving an honest effort every second he is in uniform.
2. Growth. Not all players come into this league with the maturity that it takes to play consistent minutes right away. We understand that. But every time his number is called, we expect Donté to enter the game and show us that he learned from the mistakes that he made in the previous outings we have watched him in. Personal growth is another aspect of this transformation and although I can read body language and read stories of immature acts, I really don’t know Donté Greene personally so I will try not to pass judgment as long as he keeps his name out of the media.
3. Dedication to becoming a professional. Stop with all the YouTube bullshit. You are a representative of the Sacaramento Kings, their players and their fans. Stop wasting your time being a clown in internet shorts and improve yourself as a professional basketball player. Donté Greene shot .326 from the field last season and a whopping .260 from three. This tells me a couple of things: 1. Donté wasn’t ready to play when he was called upon. 2. He needs to spend every waking moment shooting the basketball, not videos. 3. He needs to do some soul searching into what type of player he really is because a perimeter shooter with those numbers get picked last at the YMCA-
The NBA is a tough business. Players with far more talent than Donté Greene have come and gone with less fan fare. If Donté Greene doesn’t quickly put things together, he will be out of this league shortly after his 23rd birthday. I am as harsh a critic as you will find but it’s because I love the Sacramento Kings.
If you are close to Donté, which I assume you are, please pass along these words of wisdom from this Kings fan:
An NBA career is short by most career standards. Enjoy what you do but work as hard as you can to extend your career as long as possible. Lastly, $870,000/$930,700/$1,679,914 is a lot of money. Please do right by you and your family and invest that money wisely because if all of this ends after three years, you should still be able to live well for the rest of your life.
No law when it comes to me.
I let you type critics write and I just keep it hood.
That will never change.

We are all hopeful for Greene.
He seems like a good guy. Nobody here hates him. We all want so much for Donte to really turn into the player he has shown the promise of becoming. I would love to be in his position, to have the opportunity that he has. So would so many of the people here.
Sports are entertainment, and sometimes it is also entertaining to analyze the team and players and everything about them.
Sometimes we get carried away.
Sometimes fans aren’t that patient.
Sometimes fans are immature.
But few if any are hateful or wish any player to not do their best.
Unless we are talking about Kobe.

not his moms
She passed away when he was 12. He had a very emotional time with it, as would anyone.
I am sure some of us can empathize with Donte’s situation.
On a basketball note, the scouting report on Greene since high school has always says the potential is there, but the focus is wrong. He wants to be a star, but doesn’t know how to be.
I don’t think anyone on this site has personal experience with being star athletes. If there are, then I am sure they will speak up.
What the community of fans does agree on is that we all want Donte to succeed. We want such great success for him, wherever he goes. We hope that he can have his greatest success with the Kings, so that we can share in it just a little, however undeservedly. After all, we do kinda pay the bills around here.
Go Donte, go Kings!

if you come to this or any other basketball site you should understand by now that “true fans” come in all shapes and sizes, genders, ages and most particularly, opinions.

This is a hit-and-run
She came, she misunderstood, she ranted, she’s gone.
Which is really rude. She should at least have stuck around and read the comments of her own post, since she didn’t read the post that she got upset about.
So, hey, evie, we all get that you love Donté, and nobody here wants him to fail, but he hasn’t earned the minutes by anybody’s standard but yours. So come have a conversation any time you want, but you have no right to send us to the collective woodshed.

But I have to disagree w/ this
who will be a great player in the very near future.
Hopefully Donte can graduate to mediocre player first. Then slightly above average.
