Open Game Thread: Kings at Blazers, Preseason Game 1

Sacramento Kings at Portland Trail Blazers, Oct 6, 2009 7:00 PM PDT

This is your spot to discuss the game as it happens and after it happens. Reminder: no one is broadcasting this game on television. Not in Sacramento. Not in Portland. So please stay away from talk of "rivers" and "streams" and "fjords" and other bodies of water. There are no streams. Or, um, rivers. Maybe a fjord or two. What, do I look like an expert on Oregon geography?

Also, do you talk to your mother with that mouth?! Sheesh. (That means you should keep it relatively clean in the thread.)

Game tips at 7 PM Pacific on radio only (KHTK 1140 AM). Go Kings.

Got banned back in July

I haven’t asked to be added back onto Bedge, because quite honestly, it isn’t that much of a big deal.

Hounding Roybot I think

It was termed as harassment. Why I’m not aching to go back among other things.

As I said I don't really care

I have other things to do besides bullshit on Bedge yanno? I liked doing so, but it was pretty obvious that it was a joke. Who hates somebody for absolutely no reason? (Nobody.)

Yeah another reason I don't really care

Although I went through a month sabbatical (of my choosing) here as well. Only so much I can take.

I understand that too

What the NBA is deciding to do is really stupid. Why play any games that have any sort of status if you won’t televise them. It’s not like I live a hop or stone’s throw away from Portland.

It's pretty silly

They should at least stream the game, like we did with the open practice. I can understand not spending the cash for a full TV broadcast. And I don’t understand the NBA not having the audio streaming. That’s really dumb.

I’m amazed that pro sports has lasted as long as it has with it’s completely awful business practices.

Kenny actually has done it

Where as Donte hasn’t. Height means little to me when talking about players. Bill Russell was 6’9 in height, but had something like a 7’6 or 7’7 wingspan that made him the equivalent of a guy 7’2.

I wasn't happy with the selection when it happened

But that wasn’t to say that I didn’t think Reke couldn’t play either. On the draft board, I voted him 3, although later I would have voted him 4 behind Jennings.

We’ll see how this works out. I’ve not been displeased about Reke so far. On the other hand, Reke has to prove things too. He won’t prove them all this season, but he’ll show some things. He’ll show he can build on them I believe. The question is how good how quickly he becomes.

On the other hand, he’s only 20. Time is on his side.

You don't know what a tweener is in basketball terms? Oh boy....

It means that a player doesn’t have a set position like a PF, C, SF, and the like. It usually means that a player does some things that one position does, say PF, and other things, say SF, well. Lamar Odom is the penultimate tweener.

I agree Reke is a dark horse for ROY. He probably won’t get it because Griffin is so high profile. I’ll be happy if you can make a case for him though.

Ours is someone like Outlaw, who is worlds away in efficiency when usefulness when compared to Kevin Martin.

Someone who can score as easily, as efficiently, from outside and in and at the charity stripe… is dangerous. So, I’m glad you guys mostly agree, because I’d hate to see someone like him get hated on or blamed for a TEAM’s problems when he’s doing all he can.

i do like that part of his game. just not the fact that he looks for the refs to bail him out in clutch situations. a couple times last year he had the ball in his hands with a chance to win and didnt even get off a shot… instead he did his little pump fake bs and jumped into the defender tryin to draw the foul…. i think while he has value it would be better to part ways with someone who will actually take that shot.

Both of those guys need to fill out their frames a bit more. They both have a lot of potential, although Favors is probably the better defensive player right now. Davis is probably the better rebounder, although Favors isn’t far behind.

Overall I’d take Favors with almost no question, because I think he could be a better Blake Griffin. But lets see how he does in college first.

It's all relative

I remember I was living in Germany during our 21 win season a few years ago, with Telfair and Miles and Z-Bo being our core… I stayed up till 4am (or got up) just to listen to shaky internet radio feeds every game.

It was so lame. We once lost by over 30 points 3 games in a row, and if you’ve ever heard the Blazers radio announcer, Brian Wheeler, he sounds like someone shot his dog when we’re down by 7 in the 2nd quarter. Losing by 30, he didn’t seem to know how to fill the dead air.

Bad internet radio, ESPN gamecast, and a lot of losing. Man, that season sucked.

I like Wheels and think he’s better than most radio announcers these days (that season, I listened to them all since it’s all I had to keep in touch with the games), but he gets mighty depressed.

But, obviously, treads lightly whenever showing a favorable attitude towards the Lakers.

He claims he hates the Lakers now, because he hates Kobe and hated Shaq, and only loves the Showtime Lakers… but I know he tried out for that radio opening a few years ago and missed out.

This is why I hate working at Raley's

Scheduling me 4-10 today and tomorrow. Looks like we either were horrible at making shots today or Portland’s defense was stiflingly good. Below 40% on 2 pointers is not good. Reke looks like he had a decent game though, 12 points , 5 boards, 2 asts to 1 to, 1 stl, and 1 blk in 24 minutes. Probably would have more assists if we didn’t shoot so crappy. Casspi’s line aint bad either.

But Jesus Christ have you guys seen Dejuan Blair’s line from the San Antonio game?

16 points, 19 rebounds (8 offensive), 2 asts, 1 stl, in 22 minutes.

And looks like Reke and K-Mart did well defensively

Because it looks like they played only first half from minutes, and Roy and Blake both were limited offensively.

Our frontcourts defense looks like crap though, if Oden, Aldridge and Outlaw led their team. And Beno and Sergio were probably in when Miller was in.

Ever since before the draft

I had been begging the Kings here to get Reke and Dejuan Blair.
I was hoping to never have to say I told you so, but 16 and 19 boards in 22 minutes in his first game? Blair is gonna be the BIG steal. Serious beast.
This is why the Spurs did the best of anyone this offseason; adding Jefferson and him to an already poised, near-contender?
i cannot freaking believe we could’ve had that guy.
I like Brockman and Casspi so far, but. I wish I understood Petrie on this one.

by VirginiaBlue on Oct 6, 2009 11:13 PM PDT reply actions

Talk to us again in a few years

If Blair is as NBA ready as he appears, sure that’s great for the Spurs – who are contenders. But will Blair’s knees allow him to even be in the league in another 5 years? I’m not sure the odds of that are real good.

I guess I’m saying that Blair would have been a riskier pick for a rebuilding team than a contender.

What the hell is Brett Favre doing here?

I was at the game...

… some quick observations from my mental notes.

Beno looked invisible on offense and defense, the Blazer guards looked their most comfortable whenever he was in the game. Just no impact at all and he had trouble sticking with his man on defense, he looked lost on D.

Oden OWNS Spencer Hawes. If Spencer doesn’t foul him, it’s an easy bucket for Oden. He just has no idea what to do. The Blazers fans were loving it.

Aldridge was KILLING Thompson. He did most of his damage right in JT’s grill. It’s just a tough matchup, Aldridge is a little bigger and has more skills. He had the turnaround going, found spot up jumpers and he’s even got a short, off-balance jumper kind of like that off-the-wrong-foot fadeaway Dirk utilizes. Thompson will probably lead the league in fouls again. He’ll score and board just fine but he’s going to be in and out of the game a lot from picking up fouls in bunches.

Evans could’ve had at least 3 more assists just off of open jumpers that Kevin Martin typically makes. He spent most of the game moving the ball and just taking what was there. In the 3rd he tried to be more aggressive, it worked a few times but there were some possessions with bad spacing where he drove into too much of a crowd.

Brockman showed some good touch on a couple of shots that were at the outside of his range.

Casspi’s ballhandling and his ability to create his own shot are better than I was expecting. It was only 9 minutes but he got busy!

Sergio looked nervous, he wanted to do more but the lineups he played in didn’t present good defensive matchups or any running opportunities.

Martin looked like he was cruising in the first half. He came out in the 3rd and was more aggressive, he and Tyreke put on a good little run. This game was sloppy and they were obviously trying to evaluate other players, Kevin was taking a backseat because of that.

The only player who really impressed me on defense was Garcia. He was active and he was able to help out without losing his man or getting burned on a slow rotation.

Sean May is in great shape, hopefully in the next game he gets a chance to play instead of just hearing whistles.
