LTTG's view of preseason game #2

Mustang and I buddied to the game tonight and had a good time except for one low IQ Blazer fan who kept indignantly shouting “Come on Roy!” like he was disappointed – he did this even when Roy wasn’t on the floor.  I suspect he had an accident with an ice pick.

Here are some game observations

News:  That Kevin Martin guy is a pretty good player.  He may score some points in this league someday.  There was also some scolding of other players that was good to see.

News:  John Brockman drives opponents absolutely nuts!  He took excellent positions around the paint, making various Blazers go over his back in attempts to get to balls.  He easily outperformed May in this game at least, (though May has a very smooth jumper).  He’s a keeper.

News:  Casspi may in fact be for real.  Barring one silly rookie turnover, every moment on the floor he seemed like he had an idea of what he was doing and where he should be.  Very smooth, very quick, very determined, very focused (thank god!).  He also seems to be a legitimate 6’9”, as tall as anyone on the floor for the Kings not named Thompson. Very Kirilinko like. It was only one game I saw and one I heard and read the boxscore but – I feel very very good about his future.

News:  That Tyreke Evans kid can go to the hole at will.  The only thing stopping him from doing it more is his desire (currently anyway) to share the ball.  They tried little guys, medium guys (Andre Miller cheap shot him), and taller guys.  The smaller seemed to be somewhat more effective.  Once he realizes there’s this Kevin Martin guy across the court who’s pretty good . . . . At one point as KM drained yet another shot, it seemed to dawn on him.  You could see him physically react as he realized, as it sunk in.  I think that may encourage him to pass more. It may be very good.

News:  There’s still some work to do.  I doubt it was the Kings intention to have Brockman and May bring the ball up court on several occasions.  Not nearly enough assisted baskets but here were a few glimmers of some offensive strategy.  The defense, with some notably bad moments excluded, seemed (careful now) somewhat better.

News:  JT desperately needs to shed that reputation as a fouler.  A few silly ones and perhaps a few undeserved ones due to Oden getting some calls – but he’s in trouble unless he can change some minds.

News:  We are way too small in the frontcourt.  It was so obvious with Hawes out and JT in foul trouble, something that’s likely to happen now and again.. As excellent it will be to have Brockman as perhaps your 2nd or 3rd front court option, well, against a team as long as Portland anyway, we’ll never win the rebound battle.  Ever.

News:  I think Westphal may have done some team building by letting some other guys try to win this game in the last moments, though I doubt the plan was to have Sergio heave up that shot.

News: The Blazers have a lot of guys they can throw at you.  Not a lot of Stars, but a bunch of skilled NBA caliber players that make them very deep.  Pryz and Fernandez didn’t play.  We need a few more, especially (ad nauseum) up front.

Good game and good company

It was cool hanging with LTTG and having somebody to cheer with, and laugh at the drunk Portland fan with. The dude was obnoxious and obviously none too bright, but we had fun at his expense so it was all good.

You covered it pretty well LTTG. I was also typing up some notes and am pasting them below.

The game started out really well. Evans and Martin really made problems all over the place for Portland. I would say that Martin can be unstoppable. The guys is so quick that he moves and the man covering him ends up five feet from him giving Martin an open shot just about anytime he wanted to take it. And his shot was on. He scored and scored. They had no response or ability to stop him.

Evan came out strong and his ability to drive and finish is just solid. He was so good in the first quarter and at a few points later on that you had to stand up and cheer. I think he got a bit tired towards the end of the game, but it may have been that he didn’t play point much the second half of the game. It was all Beno Beno Beno….

Beno, hmm… I was discouraged by what I saw, but then what else is new. Beno would get the ball and would not pass it to Evan or Sergio, who played limited minutes in the 4th quarter. Evans would ask for the ball and Beno would not give it. Instead Beno would take up shot clock dribbling for little purpose and pass to somebody else if he could not drive for his own shot. It came across as him not appreciating the competition and asserting that he was the PG in charge. He made a really decent pass to a jumping Martin at the rim early on, but was otherwise not so good and much more effective when he was spot shooting off of a pass from somebody else. Sergio hit him for a sweet three that showed how best to use him.

Sergio, the guy is more of a true point guard than anybody else on the team. He is just more talented at passing than anybody else. He should have got more minutes. He made some really great plays by passing and showed flair about it, but that really was offset by some last minute mistakes. He tried to pass in heavy traffic in the last few of the game and lost a scoring opportunity through a turnover. It really is unclear if he can develop and make fewer mistakes. Clearly the talent is there.

Brockman, It was really cool to see Brockman getting under the Portland player’s skin. He is such a physical guy that things started getting chippy. A double foul was called at one point and a warning given by the refs. The dude is tough and in your face. Love it!

JT was great, but played too few minutes. He was in foul trouble, but when in he was getting tips and rebounds. Really good stuff and definitely fun to watch.

May seems a solid player and has a nice outside shot. Still not excited about him, but he does clearly has talent.

Oh man, the replacement refs had some kind of issues at a few places. Overall, they were just OK for the most part, but a few calls were truly bad. One call on Evans was just obscene, Andre Miller lunged in front of Evans coming up court and they called a foul on Evans. He wasn’t planted or anything. Also, Oden just muscled his was into JT repeatedly in the paint and back him almost right off of the court. It was just stupid to call the fouls on JT. He made some stupid fouls early on so it didn’t help when Oden was creating the contact and JT was getting additional fouls. Stupid stupid stupid…

Combination of players, Evans, Martin, and Udrich may seem like it would work, but I don’t like it. Evans is the best of these three at the PG, but need to be driving, breaking down the defense, and passing out. He has great across the court vision and passes out or back really well. You got to give him some props and hope somebody tells Udrich to let Evans, or Sergio, run the plays.

Udrich wants to run the show and instead of getting assists at PG he seems more likely to try to create his own shots. It was frustrating to watch Beno repeatedly not see Omri open. I would really like to see Sergio, Evans, and Martin play this three guard gig. I think it would work better.

Omri really is a very good player (as LTTG says the real deal). He didn’t score much tonight, but he wasn’t getting passes when he was wide open. The passing needed to be there for him and it just wasn’t. Sergio hit him for a really good shot, but Beno missed several wide open threes that he probably would have made. Wide open, feet set, and ready to go. Just needed the ball…

Let’s see, other players… Ely played a couple of minutes and wasn’t effective. Garcia didn’t play that long either. I am not sure why. He played 33 minutes last night.

That is about all I got. We should get enough people together to get group tickets. Maybe we can enough people together to leverage a Q&A session with the coaching staff… Now that would be cool. Otherwise, I hope to kick it with LTTG again sometime.

I disagree on Beno

there was some reluctance to give up the ball, some anger, but it was all good if he eventually settles into being the back-up. As a stats guy Mustang (something I’m not really) you should see he put up very solid numbers.
Some pretty good ad-libbing when that fast break almost went wrong towards the end, he collected his own small bobble and flipped it to Casspi (who was alertly chasing the play) for a nice dunk.
4-6 shooting, 5 assists, 0 turnovers, 2 rbds. Hard to complain about that stat line.

Yeah - I see the stats now...

I can understand that. I am a stats guy and have to say that the numbers showed him doing better than my side court impression. I didn’t look at the stats in writing up that stuff. Just based it on my impression.

Interesting how my perceptions of this game were different than the numbers showed. I think sometimes when we know what the flaws are in somebody’s game we see those flaws, they stand out, more vividly than the positives. Stats are a good way to account for that.

I guess my concern was that with Beno running the ball the game seemed to have the same flaws as last season. That with Evans and/or Sergio (when passing well) the game seemed much more dynamic to me. Much more exciting. That may be due to my own internal and complete aversion, perhaps irrational and subconscious bias, to anything that remotely resembles last season.

Refs were not ok

41 first half calls…I was going to go down and kill them but I fell asleep from the boredom they created. Touch fouls that wouldn’t be called in fifth grade. They allowed for no fighting for position on the block and they missed a call on a ball that took of 2 foot bounce OFF THE SHOT CLOCK!!!!!! They had to be the valedictorians at the school on sucking they must have attended. They have a long road up to get to bad.

If you don't like free throws

you may like this Kings team.
As TZ predicted a week or so ago, its clear KM and Evans (and Brockman when he is in) are going to spend a lot of time at the line.
SA won a few championships that way . . . . .
(but yes, the refs were pretty bad and I gave them mostly a pass at this point considering the game didn’t mean much and the situation they’re in).

Thanks for this guys

A question: What kind of turnovers was Tyreke making? Was it simply errant passing or offensive fouls? Listening a bit to the radio after work, it sounded like a lot of people were upset with the refereeing and Tyreke got a few bad offensive fouls called, which would add to his turnovers.

I don't know exactly, but

yeah a lot of the turnovers of Evans was due to the bad officiating. He got at least 2-3 really bad calls while either bringing the ball up or driving. Maybe more. LTTG and I were on our feet booing at a couple of the calls these refs made. They were a bit call happy anyway, but the calls went mostly against the Kings.

Evans didn’t mishandle the ball. He has a real solid handle on the ball. The drives and finishes were AWESOME!

by MustangMBS on Oct 8, 2009 12:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Replacements refs are calling moving picks and travels reeaaaaaal tight right now

Everyone’s foul and turnover stats are skewed because of it.

I think Tyreke will likely struggle with turnovers because he isn’t a refined PG yet (I mean, he’s only 20, right? Maybe not even 20?), but they’ll be turnovers from being aggressive and trying to make good things happen so they’re okay.

Being a rookie combined with the replacement refs makes the turnovers appear worse than they really are, I bet.

Evans never turned it over on the dribble

that I recall. He was trying to make some passes that maybe weren’t there, he completely lost the handle once and threw it into the stands. We thought it must have been tipped it was so far off – but by the reaction I guess not. We didn’t have a great angle on it. Portland is very long which will be a problem for everyone who plays them.
Many offensive fouls and screen fouls called on both teams.

Ok one that I remember

left corner, did kind a high dribble on a spin, almost lost it, recovered and then muffed it again out of bounds. He does have a good handle, dribbles a little high sometimes and a few too many risky skip passes. He is probably still adjusting to the speed in the NBA…..but he already looks good and when he gets a shot he’ll be great. They already were focusing help defenders to stop him. The kid demands attention from a defense.

by ElRonToro on Oct 8, 2009 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Defense demanded

It seemed like they had few options. Yes, he definitely demanded defense and I think the only way that they seemed to slow him was down having every big collapse on him when he drove. It was like they went from man to man to some kind of half zone down low.

I agree with you and LTTG that the shot thing is going to be huge. When, hopefully not if, he can post up all the smaller guards on him as well as drive like he does this guys is going to be unstoppable.

That guys is a monster. He is so huge that he takes up at least half the lane. He seemed a lof better and improved over last year. There were a couple of moments that looked like the old Oden, but the guy look pretty healthy.

Hmm… It seemed like Roy had some problems with Evans covering him. Evans is so big and quick that he seemed a bit out of it. I don’t think Roy could get past him without a screen.

He doesn't look lokt the same guy I saw last year

He is just smoother, more confident (that may have come from playing against midgets (excuse me little people)). He showed good quickness and a willingness to mix it up on rebounds. If he can get enough playing time with Pryz there he should be a 12 and 10 guy with 30 minutes. Big jump from last season.

by ElRonToro on Oct 8, 2009 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

To me, Oden's good days are MUCH better than Przybilla's

His rookie year’s averages of 9 ppg and 7 rebs in 20 minutes isn’t too bad, so his per-36 minute stats were good last year. His PER itself was 18, he forced a lot of fouls on opposing bigs, when he played 30+ minutes in a game he averaged 15/11… but, his conditioning was horrible due to the recovery from micro AND he fouled a ton.

If he plays 30 minutes, it will be a great season for Oden. It means he is in shape and foul troubles aren’t hampering him.

His offensive game looks MUCH improved, and even last year he scored fairly easily and efficiently since he was so big. Plus, he led the league in offensive rebounding percentage, so he got a lot of points off of put backs.

If he keeps hitting his FTs like he has in the last two games, he’ll put up a lot more points than people expect.

I don’t think he’ll have worked out all of his foul problems just yet, so he’ll have some up and down games, but being in shape was the biggest thing holding him back last year. If he has that fixed, the rest will come in time. He’s only 21, after all.

Another year of foul problems, but being in better shape, and then next year his explosiveness will mostly return (like the micro-experts say), and he’ll keep refining his still very raw game.

The Kings vs Blazers battles will be fun for the next decade.

Oden looks LIGHT YEARS better (physically) than last year

Even when he was dunking all over Hawes in preseason a year ago, he looked heavy and got winded pretty easily. You could tell his minutes would have to be limited and I think conditioning is a big factor in personal fouls committed.
This year he’s so much leaner, his footwork is cleaner and he’s doing the same things but making them look easier. The thing I noticed is that his jump-hook looks more natural, he has better balance and lift so when he turns he can put a good touch on it and keep that shot under control.

I think PW agrees with you

at least, based on this comment after the game.

When asked what stands out in the first two games of preseason:
"We need tall people – at least healthy tall people.

This will not be the last time this season that Hawes will be out, and it’s unlikely that JT will make it through another 82 games season without missing a game. But, I seems like GP decided not to pickup a backup center last summer, thinking that Hawes & JT could handle the majority of the 5 minutes. I just don’t see JT playing the 5 against Oden, Kaman, Okur, Dampier in the West and the other big centers in the East.

And, no matter how wide May is, he just doesn’t have the low post game to be an offensive threat down low or the height to compete for rebounds against taller bigger centers. So, I think that the Kings are going to need Donte’s size at the 4 before the season is over.

When the opponents leading rebounder pulls down 12 and your leading rebounder pulls down 6, your just not going to win that battle.

One last thing about Evans ability to go to the rim:

It doesn’t really seem to matter who there guarding it. He doesn’t seem that quick – but he’s very shifty, and got by his defender on the perimeter whether they were bigger or smaller and quick (usually Bayless, who is very quick).
And – he’s strong enough to go right in with the big guys and put it up.

Also as Mustang said, Evans is a guy who seems to be able to take a lot of things away from Brandon Roy. You know how teams now try to have a guy who can play Kobe? He’s a very good match-up for Roy, he frustrated him some, which should pay some dividends when the whole team is better and we’re playing for something in years to come.

Evans

There was one moment where we saw Evans drive to the hoop. This was a serious flash of brilliant basketball. I likened it to Steve Nash at the time cause Evans went through three people that were between him and rim. The only reason for the comparison by me was that it looked like Evans froze all three by changing speeds, at the least two and maybe three time, and along with using those little fakes that Nash gives off.

Three defenders lined up in front of him. All between him and the hoop.
Fast fake right, slow move left and past one defender.
Move to the right between that guy and the next one, freezing the guy in the middle
Only to shoot super quick up between the gap between the guy to the left and the guy in the middle
A finger roll inches from the hoop. It was truly a remarkable play. Especially for a rookie who is maybe 20 years old.

by MustangMBS on Oct 8, 2009 10:43 AM PDT up reply actions

right

Evans does some little subtle speed changes that seem to freeze defenders. They’re not lightening fast or anything, but very decisive and effective – and then he goes up strong.

He has a very good handle (huge hands), just needs quite a bit of work on his passing (that will come with some guys to pass to) and his jumpshot. He really does go all the way over his head on his jumper. Gotta fix that.

Pretty late but I guess is better late than never

First, I thought there was a lot of people at Arco, way more than I expected that’s for sure. I guess the whole no games on TV might work for the league, or maybe it’s just for the first game, who knows? Anyways, the crowd was pretty into the game and it got really exciting at the end. I know I was standing up and rooting the team during the comeback. It’s easy to tell that some people (at least the ones I talked to or heard talking) are excited about Tyreke and the direction of this team in general. That’s a great thing if you ask me. This team needs a lot of support, especially with the whole arena situation .

Obnoxious fans: I’m not sure where you guys were sitting lttg but did you notice the 2 douchebags sitting around section 102, I think, drunk out of their minds, getting up after every Blazer basket and messing with people around them? I wanted to run all the way from section 105 and punch those idiots in the face so bad it’s not even funny. Anyone watches Tool Academy?? I guess I found a new species, the Blazer tool.

Anyways… about the game

Reke, reke, reke…. ohh boy this kid makes me dream. He got to the rim at will (we knew that) and against anyone (Roy, Miller, Bayless, Udoka); it was such a nice thing to see. Yes, there’s still things to improve (he dribbles a little too high, and is still developing his court vision, and ohh yeah, that shot too) but whoever said he couldn’t run the team will be surprised once they see him. I’m not saying you’re wrong if you are not convinced, but I was skeptical too and came back very impressed. He was vocal, calling out plays, moving the ball, and trying to get teammates involved. He is not the ball hog some people may think he will be. To me, you can tell when players are looking to get his, he doesn’t come off like that. Many times he went to the basket only to kick it out to shooters; he seems to understand well he needs to get the ball moving. As far as turnovers, as said before, a couple were offensive fouls, once he dribbled the ball off his foot or something, another one was a bullet pass cross court that was intercepted, and I can’t remember what else. All TOs not big of a deal, but things he will get better at. One more thing before I forget, he played good D against Roy. I can clearly recall an iso play where Reke was able to go one on one and played great D. Small simple size? Definitely. Encouraging because he has the tools to stay in front of one of the best players of this league as a rook? You bet. I’m so excited about this kid and I haven’t even started raving about his backcourt mate

Kevin was his ‘Speed’ self last night, making the game look so easy. My buddy that went with me to the game (a Blazers fan) told me he knew Martin was good but he didn’t know he was THAT good. I have to definitely agree with that assessment. This is gonna piss some people off but whatever… if you really think we should trade Kevin Martin, for anything else than a all star, then you either haven’t seen him live and don’t understand this guy’s game or you are just plain stupid, very stupid. To understand Kevin, you have to appreciate the things he does so well on the court: score. He just makes it look easy. He doesn’t demand the ball that much, he doesn’t take bad shots, and he is just SO efficient. He’s not a superstar, he’s far from a complete player, he will not be a number 1 option on a championship team, WE KNOT THAT. But he’s SO good at what he does that it’s crazy to think you want to give that up. Healthy, he can give you 25 a night without breaking a sweat. If you really don’t believe and think I’m just another homer, just go to Arco and watch him play.

Enough with the dreamy backcourt. I’m going to start crying of happiness.

JT had a tough game. Oden is a horrible matchup for him (and anyone really). I’m not ready to say he’s that good of a player. He’s just huge (Oden that is) and is hard to stop such a big guy. JT picked up at least 3, even 4 of his fouls against Oden so that’s why he was so off.Part of me thinks we need another big body, but the other part thinks we are not going to face Oden, Shaq, and Dwight Howard every night. I don’t think Ely makes the team, even when we need bigs, but I think we get a big guy from D League or something. Or maybe Fesenko, right Aykis?

Mancakes was great to see in person. Love that dude already. He has the nose for the ball and knows where to be on the floor to get the rebound. That’s why he got to the line so much. He will get some minutes this season, guaranteed. Meet him after the game too, it was pretty cool. My buddy told him we knew he liked to eat pancakes, and even recommended a good joint in Sac for him to get ‘em. I told him we saw the video haha. Really cool guy.

On that note, eventhough he didn’t play, I meet Doratio Kane as well. You could tell he wasn’t in an awesome mood but I joked with him and called him "Buckets" and he said "You know how it is already, huh?" He signed nice autograph for the wifey too so that was cool. Told him we were all expecting big things this season.

Noc was off all night. Shot too many 3s and never got into the flow of the game. Pretty disappointing performance although the Blazers are a tough matchup for him.

Beno, I thought, did well and looks like the numbers back that up. He was still his "Tazmanian Slovenian" self with crazy spins to the hoop and attacking big men having no idea what to do with the ball, but he made some shots and did his best to run the team. Whether he or Sergio are the backup I think is going to depend on matchups. For now, I think Beno gets the nod from coach Westphal.

Cisco was quiet and I gotta be honest, I’m a bit worried he may be tired from playing this summer. Hope he’s just saving energy for the real thing.

Omri is going to be a big fan favorite (but we already know that). I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t that impressed until those last couple minutes. I’m not a believer yet. I think he can be good down the road, but we need to be patient with his development. Hope he proves me wrong and comes out ready for big minutes this seasonbecause that’ll be awesome for this team, but it’s just going to be tough at first. I’m definitely rooting for the guy though, he brings a lot to the table.

Refs were horrible, I yelled the whole game we need the real refs back. Hope they heard.

I’m probably forgetting a bunch of stuff but I wrote waaayyyy too much already so if it comes I’ll keep commenting. Great to see some basketball again. I’m really excited for this team. We are still bad guys, no way around it, but we are going to surprise some teams for sure.

Nice recap ed

Wish I could’ve been there. But nope, I’ll be waiting till the Home opener to see our guys in action.

By the time the home opener rolls around...

The Kings might be 0-3. Oh, good times this season will be.

I'm pretty sure the only team we have a chance against in the first few games is OKC

And being their home opener, I doubt it. Plus now we lost Cisco.

Good stuff

On Evans:

He is not the ball hog some people may think he will be. To me, you can tell when players are looking to get his, he doesn’t come off like that.

That was a great point I meant to make, one of my concerns with Evans was a Salmons kind of dribbler who can’t give up the ball. That was Salmons problem, he just couldn’t pick it up and pass it, not wouldn’t, he had to have the ball to get his wheels going, some built-in thing.
Anyway, he allayed my fears on that point. Not a great passer but hopefully that will come.

Agree lttg

The key is that he’s not a great passer… yet. That’s the problem right now. The willingness to give up the ball and find his teammates is there (he kicked it out many times and moved the ball around the perimeter after bringing it up). His court vision will develop as he plays more games, that can be improved. The habit of just looking to get yourself going is what’’s hard to shake; he doesn’t seem to have that.

Salmons was the fear, and, at least after one game, I can assure everyone that Salmons he’s not (in terms of punding the ball of course).

Agree with this as well

I would also add that when Evans drove the other teams low defenders often just collapsed on him. I guess in the hope that three guys could box him in. Didn’t always work and his willingness to pass out of that is genuine.. He clearly is no ball hog. 100% agree.

The most encouraging thing and enjoyable was watching the other team fall over themselves trying to stop him. He creates so much havoc and turns them completely around trying to keep him out. Fun to watch!!

His ability to penetrate and frustrate their defense is special. You don’t see that in a lot of players.
