Lebron to switch jersey number, K-Mart might be next
"'I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I'm starting a petition, and I've got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.' [James]
It shouldn't take much for James to convince his peers. With an assist from Basketball-Reference, Tom Ziller at the FanHouse culls the names of players currently wearing No. 23 in the league. The list:
Devin Brown, Marcus Camby, Toney Douglas (who has the gall to wear it in New York! New York!), Stephen Graham, Kevin Martin, Wes Matthews, Jodie Meeks, Jason Richardson, C.J. Watson, Martell Webster and Louis Williams."

He is surely
coming to the Kings! He knows that K-Mart has the #23 jersey and he’s getting prepared to change his number. We don’t have any #6 on the roster, so he can take it!

Given the attendance numbers
it seems that our #6 was traded during last season

I like Lebron, but gimme a break.
“I’m the hottest shit going, and I’m still not Michael Jordan, so if I can’t wear his number, no one should. I’ve also been told by my representation that I can sell a lot of jerseys to people that already have them by changing the number.

So what's next,
Kareem’s Jersey, Birds…
Jordon has gotten more than enough accolades.
Lebron is starting to piss me off. Dudes been talking to Kobe too much.

I think Bob Costas put it as well as anyone ever could.

I agree with both of you
I feel like the “if i’m not going to wear it nobody else should” was pretty ridiculous but it could’ve just come out wrong.
I still like Lebron though all in all. He has a great respect for the game and if he went on his own and got all the #23s to change numbers i think that would be a great honor for Jordan. Its not like the NBA has never honored individual players before, Hell Jerry West is the logo. But I feel like if the league does it its just a slippery slope to have Magic, Wilt, Russel, etc’s jerseys retired. But If lebron did it it’d be pretty cool.

What I don't understand
is why he didn’t change it this year. Huge amount of jerseys sold. Then next year, when he switches teams, BOOM! even more jerseys sold.

Do players get a cut from their jersey sales?
I would think they would but I don’t know for sure
The future begins now...

Why not honor Jordan some other way
Jerry West gets the logo, why not every 23 jersey in the league display the Jordan trademark logo or something. Also, if James really wanted to honor Jordan he should have been speaking to the franchise owners about retiring 23 on every team and putting it up in the rafters. I don’t totally get his logic on this one.

I don't know about that
Its a good idea, but I doubt Stern would allow it. You would be giving Jordan Brand free advertising on NBA players jerseys nonetheless.
Lebron should just talk to all the #23s individually, call them up and ask them to switch. If I was an NBA player and Lebron called me and asked me to change my number, I don’t think I would be able to say no. If he can get the good #23a (Martin, Richardson, Camby) to support him the other no names would definitely follow suit.

good point on Jordan brand advertising
Apparently Pat Riley retired #23 in Miami some time ago.

KMart wears Jordan brand
I think if MJ was that possessive of his jersey number

Wearing 23 is a tribute to Jordan already
There is absolutely no need to retire a jersey number
When you’re a current basketball player and you wear jersey 23, you wear it for Michael Jordan to some extent.
Jordan should be honored that people idolize him by wearing #23. Retiring a number is total non-sense.
BOOK IT!
