Four in a row without K-Mart Coincidence or not?
Man I am impressed with the turnaround. I just didn't see it coming.
But how is it that losing a guy average about 30 points a game makes you a better team? Could it be the other guys actually get to touch the rock a litte and contribute at the offensive end? The Defense and Rebounding also look a lot better now too. Is it just me that is starting to think he is overrated?
When will caspri (sp.) replace Nocioni in the starting line-up.

No, no, no.
May and Mason are gone from the starting line up. That’s why the team is winning. Martin was one of the most efficient players in the league this year before he got hurt.
Yes
With May and Mason out, you add Martin and this team gets even BETTER. Both Garcia and Martin? Watch out NBA.
This team won some games despite May and Mason because we had Martin on the floor.
Speed the scapegoat
the Kings’ current winning streak creates fertile ground for Speed haters to sow their hate.
Opportunism at its worst.
Speed has done nothing but work to fulfill every expectation the franchise has placed on him. Period.

Kevin Martin
is a great player. Enough of this kind of talk. And are you serious?? Casspi replace Noce in the starting lineup? Have you been watching the same games I have? Casspi is young, and although playing very well for a rookie, is still inconsistent. Nocioni is better in almost every area right now.
The NBA: "Where 27 free throws happens"
Not a coincidence, but also not the result of Martin going down.
This conversation happens in some form in regards to every team that loses a major component of the team and then manages to meet or exceed expectations. Personally, I don’t believe that the addition of one of the most unobtrusive and efficient scorers in the league is going to hurt our team. As for, why we’ve done better in the games he has not been on the floor, I would note some combination of the following factors:
- Desmond Mason is gone. Our starting lineup was essentially playing with four players and a mobile roadblock.
- Spencer has replaced May in the starting lineup. His statistical contributions have not exactly been the stuff of legends, but it should be noted that both he and JT have played their best when they play together.
- Udoka is everything Mason was advertised as being, but better and doesn’t need to be a starter to be effective.
- Tyreke is getting used to the NBA game, his coaches, and his teammates. Put simply, the kid is amazing. Hollinger has noted that typically rookie point guards are in for a huge learning curve in their first years, but that this year’s crop seems to be putting that notion out to pasture. Someone in another thread also mentioned that his continually improving defense has helped keep JT’s fouls down by limiting the number of penetrating guards he has to deal with.
- Our bench has seemingly found their flow in the game. Casspi and K9 (hard-nosed woof!) in particular have contributed solidly and allow us to avoid the constant catchup play.
So no, it isn’t a coincidence that the Kings are playing better. But it also isn’t because we don’t have Kevin Martin. Add K-Mart to the things I’ve noted above. Add Garcia. They’re only going to get better and, for the first time in a couple years, I’m reasonably optimistic about the future of Kings Basketball.

Well stated
I think this team can only get better when Martin and Garcia return. Why? Because it’s pretty clear that Westphal has a clue – this guy is regularly finding the right combination of players at the right time against the right opponent. Give him two more solid options on the roster? I have confidence he’ll be able to make it work.

Agreed
It’s also a debate for another time. Let’s enjoy the players we have on the floor right now. We won’t know until Kevin comes back, and if the team is better off with him playing fewer minutes, I am sure Westphal will figure that out. It certainly isn’t going to be “play Kevin Martin or else.”

You know, BA,
If you post about a topic that has been discussed over and over this week as though it’s a completely new and original thought, and you have no analysis, no stats, no evidence of any thought process going into the post other than something just popping into your head, you’re not going to get a ton of respect around here.
Particularly if you can’t even spell the names of the guys on the team you’re supposedly following and don’t care enough to even glance at the front page of the site you’re posting on to see the correct spelling.
You’d have been better off to join one of the (many) conversations about this very topic and express your “views” there without wasting time and space on this fanpost.

If the win streak keeps going
5, 6, 7(!)? Then we should get a new fanpost after each win asking if it’s a coincidence or not. That would be almost as fun as the actual win streak!

then when they lose it can be a post about how Donte, Spencer, and JT suck. It’s like clockwork.
Nah
its never JTs fault because he dunks well in video games. It will be Donte, Spencer or K-Mart’s fault.

You're forgetting about Bad Beno (dribble, dribble) and No-Chucker-ioni. :-)
All it takes is one bad game for either one and they’re back where they were last year.

I love stuff like this
He brings up 3 points: other players getting touches, defense, and rebounding. Really? Yet Martin doesn’t need a lot of touches to score. Plus, his replacement was Beno Udrih who isn’t much better than Kevin at defense and rebounding. And somehow this turnaround is because Martin is out?
Troll!
www.mancancook.net
Quick Question?
Ive been reading this thread, and it seems to me that, although the numbers support it (4 wins), people still defend k mart like he’s effin jordan or something.
Yes, he happens to be our best player, and ziller “might” be right when the talks about the line up change (-may/mason +hawes/udrih) could be the reason. Although i chose to disagree because although mason and may started, they hardly got any burn (playing time). With that being said, you cant deny the fact that the offense looks better without k mart. Gone are the days of pass the ball to martin, and watch him play. Or marting dropping 30, and his man droppin 25.
Again, its not everyday that a team can lose its best player and get better. But the kings are obviously the exception.
So you have some proof
That the Kings would have lost these games if Martin hadn’t been injured?
Yes, the lineup change helped. A little home cooking also helped.
Even before Martin left the team, there was noticeable improvement – even if it hadn’t translated to wins & losses.
Man there are some sensitive dudes on this site. Raise an unpopular thought and I guess thats the way it goes.
First let me say – I am happy as heck to see the Kings doing well. Is great to see Tyreke, JT and even Hawes – youngs guys like that hit their stride and more importantly get some wins doing it. Its also good to see that maybe they have what appears to be their first good coach since the unfortunate decision a couple of years ago to send Adelman packing.
I have no doubt Kevin is an efficient offensive player.— he is a top scoring talent. The fact is he is still taking a ton of opportunities (shots + getting fouled in the act) And he does’t rebound And he doesn’t pass (and given his efficiency maybe he shouldn’t very much) And he doens’t block shots And he doesn’t really get Steals. I am not saying he can’t, he just doesn’t. I mean, check out the assists per game of all the top scorers in the league at the two guard position and tell me where Martin ranks? My point – actually my question – is, anyone who has actually played this game knows that its a lot less fun to watch someone else play offense. Even pros are human and if they get to watch on offense the tendency is to not be as involved on the other end especially young guys.
To me it seems they are more inspired right now. I have to agree with the comment about May and Mason – maybe getting those retreads out of there is really a bigger part of it.
We have no problem with people sharing opinions
but you need to back them up. This season Kevin’s attempted 22 shots per game. 1 more than Wade, 1 less than Kobe. However, he’s kind of had to this season. Once everyone else is clicking and playing consistently he won’t need to. Also, his stats this year are from a very small sample size so they are skewed. When it comes down to it he does not take that many shots to score. And free throw attempts don’t really count because the time is stopped so he’s not wasting a possession. You act is if Kevin is a black hole, he’s not. He moves well without the ball and doesn’t just take it to run an iso play.
Also, Martin’s absence has done nothing to improve the rebounding and defense because he was placed by a worse rebounder and defender. If you’re going to bring up something like this make sure you back it up with some valid stats and ideas. Saying he takes too many shots and doesn’t rebound or defend well enough simply isn’t true when his replacement may be worse
www.mancancook.net
Kind of had to? Offense seems okay to me recently.
My point is that the young guys seem more into it at the other end, not that Beno is better than Kevin. I can’t quantify it. I will drop it – we are adding nothing to what Jaycee said, which I agree with.

KMart off the bench when he comes back (atleast initially)??
I realize how illogical that may sound, but I’ve always been a fan of the “scorer off the bench” approach. I’m just saying that if the current starters are gelling and performing well, having KMart come off the bench could be an absolute killer. What other team in the NBA would have a 25ppg bench scorer? Seems like it’d create great balance and boost our little bench mob. Ionno, I think it’s worth a shot Mr. Westphaul, atleast to get him back into the groove of things over 10 games and see how it works out.
