What about Trading for Roy Hibbert?

This is my first time bringing up a new subject, so be easy :). But because of all the tadre talk involving the Hornets I was asking myself the question, "Since it seems most people are against a trade for the Hornet's center because of his expensive contract, who would be someone I would want at center, over Spence, that does not come with all the money attatched?"

My answer was Roy Hibbert.

Star-divide

My reasons are:

1) He is a defensive presence at 7 foot 2 inches and averages 2.4 blocks a game.

2) All of his stats are better than Hawes (11.7pts, 9reb, 2.3ast to 10.4pts, 7.2reb, 1.8ast).

3) Roy's eff is 18.14 at 26.7 minutes played compared to Hawes 13.0 eff at 29.6 minutes played.

4) He is a wide body and has taken only 2 3's in the season and pre season (no more center shooting 3's)

5) In my opinion, he will be a major force in a couple of years if he stays healthy, of course.

So who would the Kings have to give up?

I would trade Spence and K9 for Roy and another player.

So why would the Pacers trade him?

1) Salary dump, Cap relief.

2) They get an up and coming center in return

Maybe it's not even something they would consider but I like his game and think he would be a major anchor in the middle for this team for a long time. The only draw back I can think of is that he is as slow as a turtle. So what do you think?

I didn't know the Kings would be desperate enough to take Roy Hibbert AND Mike Dunleavy Jr.

I think I’d rather have Emeka Okafor.

So you like me are not too concerned with Okafor's contract?

I’m still on the fence about it, though I think I would pull the trigger.

The Pacers aren't trading Hibbert

Plus, Hibbert is very slow. I don’t know that he’s everything you think he is. Is he out performing Spence right now? Yes.

Does that mean anything to me? No.

Agree

I’m a Louisville alum and watched a lot of him when he was in college. The guy is slower than molasses. Hawes will be better in the long run.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome again. True story.

In fact

The Pacers have worked on HIbbert to move faster. I wonder if he’s catching people off guard now, and will return to a mean. For Hibbert’s & Indy’s sake I hope not, but it’s always possible.

How it plays out is anyone’s guess though.

I don't see it

Hibbert is averaging 2 more points, 2 more boards and 1 more block than Hawes while playing 2 fewer minutes per game. They’re only about a year apart in age (Hibbert is older) and NBA experience (Hawes has 1 more year under his belt). I don’t think there is enough there for the Kings to want to take on (for example) the $11 million for Mike Dunleavey next year, and I don’t think that the Pacers are in any hurry to deal a center that is producing 12/9/2 while earning less than $2 million a year for each of the next two years.

Hibbert is a nice player

But I think Spencer will end up being the much better offensive player who can still hold his own on the defensive end.

I hope you are right about Spence.

I just don’t know. I see age creeping up on alot of centers like Shaq and Duncan ect… and would like to get someone as big as Hibbert to clog the middle for the future. I will say that I was very happy with Spence’s defense (hustle and blocking) during the Rockets game.

Hibbert is too tall..I predict injury issues in the near future a la Yao.

Also, he doesn’t fit the offense well and is extremely slow, like pookey said.

I like that you put thought into the post, unlike some… COUGH Briggz COUGH

I guess, it just seems to me that most people are fine with a trade for Okafor.

And Hibbert has better numbers than both Okafor and Spence, then Hibbert would be a better choice among the three. However, he is not able to run the floor like the other two and that is a problem.

It probably won’t happen for some of the reasons that were posited by section214, such as 1) why would the King’s take on Dunleavy’s contract and 2) why would the Pacers want to give up a guy that produces like that at 2 mil. a year.

Yeah Indy really likes him.

I think your right, Aykis.

I wouldn’t want to trade him away if I was Indy unless there was an offer proposed I couldn’t refuse. I dont know if what I suggested was enough or just a hypothetical situation that will disappear in the ether? Probably ether.

I guess you didn't read the context of my post?

It was based upon my trying to reconcile the need of a more physical presence in the middle while not having the contract issue of an Okafor be a problem.

And just beacuse you haven’t heard of it “through the grape vine” so to speak, you discount it’s validity as a subject?

Hibbert? I can't stop chuckling.

I like his defensive game, of course. I doubt he has a tremendous amount of upside offensively. He may be a guy that gets better over time like Andrew Bynum, but I’m really not informed enough to render an opinion.

Like that’s ever stopped me before.

IMO the Kings are better off letting K9's contract expire and taking their chances in the upcoming draft

rather than taking on Mike Dunleavy Jr’s deal (injuries, erratic on offense, liability on defense, does not fit the scrappy profile of this current squad) and Hibbert just because he blocks shots.

The Kings worked out Hibbert and liked him, they are familiar with him, and they passed on him, though he was projected to be the Kings choice. Instead it was Mr. Jason Thompson – I think it was the right choice.

I loved Hibbert coming out of the draft

And wouldn’t mind having him if he could be gotten cheaply. But Indiana appears to really like him, and has brought him along slowly. I doubt he’d be worth what we’d have to give up to get him.

by otis29 on Nov 16, 2009 6:06 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Honestly, I wouldn't mind getting Hibbert

but what I would mind is the fact that we’d have to take on a shitty contract to get him. He’s just not worth it. At least with Okafor we had the production and shitty contract rolled into one. If Hibbert produces he’ll want a bigger contract, so then we’d be saddled with an overpriced contract for him and whatever other crappy contract we picked up to go along with it, which would most likely be Mike Dunleavy, who is apparently never playing again.

Yep. Once shitty contracts get involved the red flags are all over the place.

Hibbert is just as nice as Spence in my opinion. He’s displayed a decent work ethic and doesn’t seem to be a good character guy off the floor. I haven’t watched him enough to garner an opinion on who has the better upside. I’d say Spence and Hibbert are even when it comes to who improved since last year.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

Pacers fan in Sac here

I get the feeling that between Rush and Hibbert (both first round picks last year) the Pacers would entertain trade talks for Rush, but Hungry Hungry Hibbert is pretty untouchable now. He has shown a great touch around the bucket, but needs work on his footwork. He will continue to get better as he gets more minutes (he will get more minutes when his footwork gets better and stops fouling so much!) Just my two cents…

I think you're safe jantz

I think most of us know Hibbert is not on the block right now.
