Spencer Hawes's failing grade

How far can we go with Spence??

Star-divide

I went to the game last night, 4th time this year.  The place was the fullest I have seen it in a long time. The place felt like it was ready to explode if they could have just got the lead to 6 points, but the time never game.

From my perspective, every player on this team deserves a passing grade this year except two. The first one is Sean May who may be building a second story on his doghouse. The other is Spencer.  He has just not been consistent.  By all accounts, he has one great game this year.  I know he is young, he would be a senior in college this year, but there are several other young centers in the league too.  Last night I would have wanted Noah on my team rather than Spence. Horford, Lopez in NJ, Bynum, Noah, Hibbert, Okafor, Pryz etc, etc, are all young too.  I do not see any hall of famers from this group yet, but so far this season I would probably take all of them ahead of Spence.  Ok, maybe not Hibbert or Bynum (only because he is a Laker).  But the young excuse is getting old.  He has been in the league 3 years now.

And if you want to look at stats and come up with over 36 minutes he would average blah, blah, blah. I do not buy that either. There is a reason he is not on the floor for 36 minutes.  There is a reason KT who has no offensive game is getting playing time. Spence is not getting it done.  I am not asking for 20 and 15.  I just want 12 and 9 on a consistent basis.

The Kings seemed to have approached respectability.  Playoffs, not so sure.  But if you look in the West, you can count on the Lakers, Suns, Dallas, SA, Denver, and Portland.  That leaves NO (who has problems), Houston (somehow getting it done but not a lock), Utah (having problems) and OK.  I think we can hang with Houston, NO, and OK.  We are somewhere on the dotted line between Respectabiltiy and Playoffs I want to be  closer to Playoffs than respectability.

At last night's game the thought just kept coming to me that if Okafor were out there with Evans, Beno, Donte, and JT, we would have had a better chance to win. .

Perhaps there is a reason for these rumors the last few days.  Maybe Petrie sees us further up the dotted line and realizes there is a hole in the middle.

I am not looking to be hung with a new rope, and hope I posted this in the right section, but wonder if others out there in Kingsland feel the same way.

Spencer is missing alot of outside shots right now

He really is a good outside (15-18ft) shooter (hopefully no more 3’s) however I think he is not getting the ball in the right places for his game on offense. If I missed it forgive me but he does not get the ball in the low post unless 2 other kings and the man guarding them are there also.
A steady diet of say 5-10x per game the play should be called to get Spencer isolated with his back to the hoop down low. I have seen this kids moves as has everyone here and I think he can take 99% of centers in this league down there all the time 1v1.

I think

Hawes is underperforming for sure, but I wouldn’t call it failure. And while I’d rather have a Lopez or Noah, both were picked up by other teams before we got Shock and Hawes, respectively. Besides, you can’t base your claims on who should’ve been drafted based on data that’s only made after they’ve been drafted.

Balancing talent with business concerns is no fun. While we could go after average but consistent centers (Dalembert, Okafor), it would probably make more sense to spend one more year on the Hawes development project.

Some players have an innate talent, others have to work hard to keep up. I think Spencer just needs to work harder and find his groove. That, and we’re only 10 games into a season with a new coaching staff (Hawes’ 3rd coaching change in 3 years). Give him one year with a veteran coach and we’ll see what happens.

Sure, we're all disappointed

but the only thing that’s going to stop him from being young is experience, which will be painful for all of us.

A few moments of good, some moments ordinary and a lot of bad. We all hoped for more, but this can’t be that unexpected.

As for all of the guys you listed, almost all of them were taken higher in their respective drafts than Spencer.

I think we all want better, but I’m not ready to give up. I might be ready to give up on the long distance shooting though. Spencer seems most comfortable and capable in the high post, I think we need to see more of him there.

Spencer will get it

at what point are they actually giving him the ball? They are posting up Jason instead, and Jason does not have the skill that Spencer has offensively on the block or at 15 feet. But the point is you don’t have to run plays for Thompson – he crashes the offensive boards and makes plays for himself, and he plays better and is more effective when offensive responsibility isn’t heaped upon him.

Spencer, on the other hand, is definitely more useful when used as a facilitator in the high post or shooting that set shot or getting the ball on the move to drive and put his skills to work. I see the main problem with Spencer is that he is not Jason Thompson, he is not a board crasher, instead he needs teammates to work with him and find him the ball. That is not happening. Evans is a little blind when he drives – he is doing great, but he should have passed instead of forcing some layups last night. Beno plays a good 2 man game with Spence, but he is usually the one taking the shot.

Certainly Hawes needs to be more assertive and do better with the opportunities he gets. But I definitely think that his teammates could do a better job of helping him get into his offense better. His defense is not too terrible, there has been some improvement, but we all know that Hawes is more offensively minded and always will be.

Spencer was draining shots last year at this time

He was making the ‘3’ look easy. Seems like he has no confidence. His shooting touch has disappeared. I can’t put my finger on the exact problem. The league may have him scouted him better, and he has not adjusted. He is in better shape than last two years, PW is giving him every opportunity, but he is not getting it done. Regardless, he has too much size and skill to play this way. Once his confidence returns, we will see a different player.

Maybe a road trip, away from home pressure will help

I hope so, the shot looks wretched.

I posted this once before

weren’t there stories earlier in the preseason, of Coachie working with Spencer on his 3 pt shooting. Could this be why Spencets shot looks out of wack. Maybe he’s thinking too much about the technic that he & coachie were working on.

Watching his shot, he seems to be on target, but the range is off. He’ll shoot a couple that are slightly long and come off the rear of the iron, and the next shot he short arms and it ends up being a foot short. But, the form looks good, just a slight bit tentative.

I saw that before and think its a possibility

I personally think his shot will eventually (hopefully soon) come around. I would hope coachie is working on putting a little more arc on it.

actually, my friend noticed the same thing

He thought that Hawes’ shot looks different than it did last year, with him shooting the ball more in front of his head than last year. It doesn’t look any different to me, but it would explain why a lot of his shots have been flat and/or short

Spencer's confidence is clearly shaken..

This is bad, but I think he will work through it. I really don’t like the prospect of Okafor because I think he puts us into the playoffs, but as a really low seed. I would much rather be in Portland’s position a few years ago where they were 7th worse and ended up with Oden.
If we can add a quality big like Ed Davis or Derrick Favors and Hawes improves his game I think that puts us in championship contention instead of contention for the bottom half of the playoffs.

Spencer

I think has no excuse. JT was making a whole bunch of mistakes last year, but look at him now. He is a beast at rebounds. He misses a couple shots, but his presence is felt. I don’t see anything with Hawes. He is just there.

its a fact

but he must show improvement, not regression. Its early in the season yet . . .

I wouldn't call it regression

I call it crazy inconsistency, which happens when a 21 year old trys to play with men

And, if we were his teacher we could put him the the corner with a dunce cap on his head, or

we could work with him and help him learn.

Since we don’t have any other center, I guess we should work with him unless we want to finish the year with May & Thomas at center.

Spencer just needs

to have his role better defined and to get the ball in spots where he can help the team. Right now that’s not at the top of the key.

In the meantime I think he’s just going to need to hit the boards and play solid D and let the game come to him.

He cannot D up anyone.

Short guys like Scola ruin him and Marc Gasol wrecked him. He is not slowing down any NBA caliber big men and is not applying enough offensive pressure to make up for it.

Interesting...

How quick people are to hang people out to dry here… Donte’, now Spencer. Who both played pretty damn well last game…. Geez, people, it’s not like either one is Q. Douby.
