Everyone relax about the arena situation:
The mayor has appointed a task force. Eliot Ness is already advising KJ to try doing things "the Chicago way."

Pretty amazing list of peeps here.
I like KJ. He is pro-active (insert acne joke here) and I do believe that this is why he wanted to be mayor. Getting something done like this is a legacy for a mayor. My dad was a union construction worker in the Sacramento area for 35+ years and there is nothing more prideful for he or myself than driving through downtown and seeing the work that he did on core buildings of Sacramento. My grandfather built the original KNCO booth (Grass Valley’s local radio station) at the Nevada County fairgrounds in the the late 70’s. He passed away in 1980 but his legacy lives on through a small wooden structure that is the main meeting hub of a community during its blue ribbon event.
If Kevin Johnson, a lifetime Sacramentan, can accomplish the impossible and get the Kings an arena and guarantee them staying here long term he has created something that he and his family can be proud of for generations. Kudos to KJ for being a basketball fan in a basketball town and fighting the good fight against imbecile bureaucratic bastards.

Seriously.
KJ would be a hero to most Kings fans if he gets this done.

And be reviled in the city that voted him Mayor

Naw, most of us actual city-dwellers appreciate KJ's ambition
And for most of them that don’t like him, it seems to be more of a personal thing or a social-issue thing. It’s the folks in the ‘burbs that have the biggest beef with him (not all of them, of course; I’m sure most of the Sacto StR members don’t live in the city. Not that all of us here necessarily support the Mayor), and those folks didn’t get to vote against him before and won’t get to vote against him in the future.
I know that’s probably not news to you, Pookey, I just think it’s interesting to investigate how Sacto’s sprawl contributes to a lot of our issues with development and revitalization and whatnot. Really, a lot of our issues in general.

Yep
It’s the crux of the issue really. Sacramento grew east to 65th (and south to Florin) by the 70’s, than out to Rancho by the late 70’s, Citrus Heights and Antelope grew big in the 80’s, and then Elk Grove, Roseville and the outlying suburbs got big. Natomas was the last of that.
As the area has changed, it needs to go along with it. The suburban sprawl is not something I care for. My point, though, is that even though enough people voted for KJ for mayor, enough people also don’t want to pay for a new arena either. He’ll be reviled for it no matter what he does it.
It has nothing to do with anything other than the Sac proper voters.

reviled, yes, though I'm pretty sure his re-election is safe regardless.
I think we’re on the same page as far as the difference between people in the larger Sacto area that will never like Mayor Johnson, and those within city limits that are more in-tune with his way of doing things (he did, after all, win election by a pretty hefty margin over a multi-term incumbent despite a great deal of negative press throughout the campaign). But I suppose this is a basketball blog, not one about Sacramento politics, so I’ll leave it there.
As for the arena effort:
…even though enough people voted for KJ for mayor, enough people also don’t want to pay for a new arena either.
…touches on an interesting issue regarding public votes for financing an arena here. If I remember correctly, the vote for Q&R for a sales tax to finance an arena at the railyard was voted-on not just by Sac city residents, but by the surrounding counties as well because the tax would’ve also involved them. If this was the case, I wonder what the results were for the voters within city limits (it may even be possible to dig-up those numbers… a task for another time), and I wonder if it might be possible to pass a public financing vote that didn’t include voters outside of city limits.
This strategy might actually not make any sense at all, considering a great deal of Kings fans (and especially season ticket holders, I’m sure) live outside the city and I have no tangible reason to expect the city’s voters to approve public financing, other than the significant support for Mayor Johnson.

What's not to like?
Beats the crap out of mayor that thinks that placing a Farrell’s on “K” street is enough to revitalize downtown.

This is a good thing
The first thing I thought when I heard he was running for mayor was that he was going to get an arena built for Sacramento. I wish him luck.

Yeah hopefully the Kings can land a new arena deal!
They belong in Sacramento.

Kevin Johnson - activist
Action – this is great, not good. Mayor Johnson has made a strong effort to continue to make this happen. There is a time limit here so you can argue priorities – but this is a big deal to the future of the area either way. It will say alot about how things are done in Sacramento (or not done)
Re-Action – Nobody is busting down the doors to make this happen – but there is political and financial support to allow the opportunity – it has been tried – but I applaud the effort to try a different approach, involve new faces, new ideas.
InAction – I made the mistake of reading the link online and of course there is always some SacBee.com comment. Haters, Conspiricists, Malcontents – is this where they go to roost? I will be shaving my head so I don’t pull my hair out now.

Reading SacBee.com comments was starting to make me want to kill myself
I had to quit, cold-turkey. Sort of. Okay, I fall off the wagon every once in a while, I just try harder to not let it get to me, and I don’t post any comments. Usually.
