NCAA Hoops Preview from the Kings' Perspective

Draft_090224_patrick_patterson_medium

Disclaimer -

It is not my intent to begin a discussion of the draft when nearly the entire regular season lies before us.  My fandom is invested in the 09/10 season much like the rest of STR's membership.  I am certainly not "giving up on the season."  However, just as we knew going into last season that the team would likely address the point guard position - whether that was through the draft or otherwise - the same could be said this season in regard to finding an additional interior presence to compliment Shock and (perhaps light a fire under) Hawes.  Of course, the franchise's intent to add such a player has been noticeably apparent through the trade rumors involving Emeka Okafor and Samuel Dalembert.

So, with the NCAA basketball season beginning, and many of us following both the Kings and college hoops, there are a few collegiate prospects that should be interesting to observe over the coming months.

I have narrowed it down to a list of ten players, of whom at least one could very well find himself catching lobs from Tyreke in the not so distant future.

Star-divide

Players of Potential Interest to the Kings:

Solomon Alabi, C, Florida State - The best thing about Alabi is his size (measured 6'11" w/shoes and a 7'5" wingspan).  He isn't as athletic as, say Thabeet (yikes!), but he is a decent shot blocker and runs the floor fairly well.  Still, the Kings' interest in Alabi this season will depend on whether he has improved his offensive fundamentals, particularly passing the ball.

Cole Aldrich, F/C, Kansas - Like Alabi, Aldrich has fantastic size, and projects to be a center in the NBA.  He isn't as fluid offensively of someone like Brook Lopez, but he is skilled.  His shot is questionable from outside the paint and his lack of athleticism can make him turnover prone against quicker post players.  Still, Aldrich is a very gifted rebounder and a better shot-blocker than you'd think.  His stock was off the charts late last season and he'll definitely see interest from the Kings.  Some might say he's a bit of a Hawes-Brockman hybrid.

Al-Farouq Aminu, F, Wake Forest - Aminu is an athletic freak.  I saw him play against BYU last December and he has some major hops.  As such he's been compared in the past to Josh Smith.  That seems somewhat appropriate considering Aminu hasn't defined himself as either a 3 or a 4 (he's 6'8", 210 lbs.) and his offensive game is lacking.  Aminu doesn't yet have the ability to shoot outside of 16-18 feet and he certainly cannot create for himself the way many NBA SF's can currently.  It will be interesting to see how Aminu adjusts this season with Jeff Teague and James Johnson having been drafted and the Demon Deacons looking to him more offensively.  If he's going to draw any kind of interest from Geoff Petrie, he'll have to improve his perimeter game and likely establish himself as a 3.

DeMarcus Cousins, F/C, Kentucky - I'm very interested in seeing Cousins play under Calipari this season.  Cousins may have the skills/talent to become as big a star as Chris Webber someday.  He could also turn out to be the next Jerome James.  Like so many before him, it will depend on his mindset because Cousins is a physical specimen and has already developed some nice offensive tools that Petrie will have to recognize.

Ed Davis, F, North Carolina - Davis compares in some ways to Jason Thompson.  He's a nice athlete and highly skilled around the basket, but he has yet to develop a mid-range game, even like unto Shock.  Davis figures to get a lot of attention this season playing in Chapel Hill with Tyler Hansbrough departed and that will only help his game improve.  If he can develop a shot outside of 12 feet look out because he's going to be a very nice player at the next level.

Eddavis_medium

Derrick Favors, F, Georgia Tech - If you're drafting high come June, any team will have to take a long hard look at Favors.  Even if he plays the 4 like Shock, if he were ever available to the Kings he'd still be a very intriguing prospect.  Favors is uber-athletic with good size (6'10", 215 lbs.+) and phenomenal rebounding skills.  Additionally, he is a tremendous shot-blocker.  He'll play alongside another likely 1st round pick in Gani Lawal this season so it'll be interesting to say the least.  By all reports, Favors appears to lack the character concerns of Cousins and has a solid work ethic.

John Henson, F, North Carolina - Henson just arrived at UNC and he's already drawn comparisons - at least in terms of physicality/athleticism - to Kevin Durant.  That is too say dude is tall (6'10'') and skinny (200 lbs.?) (Keon Clark?).  If Henson can add to his frame and continue to develop what appears to be a nice perimeter game those comparisons might not seem too inappropriate.  He has a nice mid-range jumper but needs to really improve as a rebounder to be projected as a 4 - which would increase his draft stock dramatically and make him a lock for a top-ten selection.

Greg Monroe, F, Georgetown - The Big East conference won't be as deep in terms of talent as in previous seasons as many of its top players moved to the NBA (Thabeet, Flynn, Williams, Clark, Cunningham, Young, Blair, Price) and many highly-touted recruits chose ACC and SEC schools.  All of this should allow Georgtown, and particularly Monroe, to put up some significant offensive numbers.  Monroe wisely chose to stay in school as he needed to improve in being a more consistent post-threat and a more polished ball-handler.  He isn't quite as athletic as some of the aforementioned bigs, but he is a smart player with some terrific offensive skills.  Monroe already has a jumper and has proved capable of grasping the Princeton offense.  The Kings will certainly be interest in Monroe, especially if he were still available in the late-lottery and Sacramento finishes short of the playoffs as most "analysts" have projected.

Patrick Patterson, F, Kentucky - Contrary to popular belief, Patterson has failed to prove himself as a rebounder despite his bulk, and comparisons to Paul Millsap or DeJuan Blair have appeared inaccurate.  However, Patterson is as polished offensively - if not more so - than those two players.  DX compares him favorably to Brandon Bass.  That is more accurate because Patterson has a nice mid-range game like Bass, but needs to improve as a post defender.  Playing with DeMarcus Cousins this season should allow Patterson the opportunity to have better rebound matchups than his previous two years with the Wildcats.  Of course, playing with John Wall as a distributor can't hurt Patterson either.  Like Monroe, Patterson would be a interesting prospect for the Kings to consider in the late-lottery.

Larry Sanders, F, Virginia Commonwealth - Sanders doesn't appear to be a Petrie-esque prospect simply because he is pretty raw offensively.  He compares to Alabi in that he has excellent size, athleticism and shot-blocking skills, and has also drawn comparisons to a young Theo Ratliff because of his defense and rebounding ability.  Still, it will depend on how Sanders develops his offensive fundamentals and fills out his thin frame (see Henson, John) for the Kings to give him substantial consideration in the future.

Other Players of Note:

Jerome Jordan, C, Tulsa

Gani Lawal, F, Georgia Tech

Andrew Ogilvy, C, Vanderbilt

Ryan Thompson, G, Rider (Shock's little bro)

John Wall, G, Kentucky

International:

Donatas Motiejunas, C, Benetton Treviso

Jan Vesely, F/C, KK Partizan Belgrade

Players I will be keeping note of this season in order of my interest:

1. Derrick Favors – Freak Athlete, would be exactly the interior defender/rebounder the Kings need. Lets see how he does in college.
2. John Wall – I know we just drafted Reke, but if we got Wall too, we could end up having one of the best backcourts this league has ever seen.
3. Ed Davis – Want to see if he develops more defensively, probably a better scorer than Favors.
4. Al-Farouq Aminu – Don’t really want him on the Kings because I like Omri and Donte, but he should be fun to watch. I think he ends up being top 5 pick come lottery time.
5. Greg Monroe – Now here’s a guy I’m really glad stayed in school. Time to see how he improves.
6. Patrick Patterson – Probably the best character guy in the NCAA. Also not a bad basketball player. He’ll need to improve his defense/rebounding though.
7. Donatas Motiejunas – Motiejunas could be a very nice player, or a bust. He’s way too skinny for a Center though. I’d have the same concerns with him as I have with Spencer. Both have well developed post-games, can hit the long-range jumper, but tend to get beaten up inside.

I'm going to throw in one more -

Willie Warren. 6’4" shooting guard that can handle a little. Reminds me a little of Ben Gordon when he was in college. Could be a perfect complement to Evans and Martin. I like him, though I like your top 6 better.

Warren's definitely a talent

But the only guard I’m really interested in this draft is John Wall (unless we trade Kevin Martin or something before the draft). Aldrich is a projected top pick I don’t really want, because I don’t see much upside to him. Then again that’s what I thought about Brook Lopez.

I miffed completely on Brook. Thought he would turn out a disaster pick – but to be fair, I never saw him play. But everything was raising flags for me.

Twins are always a tough call

The Lopez Bros. seem a lot like Horace and Harvey Grant to me as far as talent/star potential. Other interesting twins: the VanArsdale twins – the only two to make it to an All-Star Game. One shot right handed, the other left handed.

Most of all – these two are Robin and Brook. C’mon ( I went to school with two brothers named Francis and Leslie – what is with parents!?!)

bonus btw: check out the stats of Jon Brockman against the Lopez twins. Mancakes is awesome.

Each of the players you mentioned would probably be in my personal Top 10 as well. I was trying to be objective (and list the players in alphabetical order) though.

I would put Cousins in my Top 5 however because I think his ceiling is so high. Aminu would not make my Top 5 as he projects as a 3 – and I’m not sure what the Kings are doing yet at that position in terms of Greene and Casspi. I think my Top 5, in no particular order would then include: Favors, Wall, Cousins, Monroe and maybe Aldrich (or Motiejunas, but I don’t know enough about him).

Have a rec

As interesting as the top pick may be, I also find it even more interesting to see what gem gets dug up late. I always find it funny to see all the “Petrie is interested in drafting so and so” then seeing how they turn out (Mario Chalmers and Aaron Brooks are the recent ones that come to mind).
I’m too lazy to do the research and doublecheck, but the Kings only have their first and second rounder this year, correct?

Great stuff sroufe

It’s good to know about what guys to look for. I usually start paying attention later in the college bball season but is definitely good to start early. I don’t think has much to do qith the Kings season because it’s always good to be an educated fan when it comes to young prospects. Makes for much better conversations next May and June.

I"m with you ed. I don’t follow college ball at all until the run up to the madness. I will follow the Cal team a bit during the season just because I’m an alum. I don’t really follow or root for teams per se but will watch games to check on players that may be showing up on the King’s draft radar. I did watch 7 OKC games last year just because I fell in love with Blake Griffin. My thinking early is that this season we don’t really need a prototypical Petrie player but instead need a big banger who can play inside. It’s really early yet.

Sidenote

Joaquim Noah. OJ Mayo. Eric Gordon. Al Horford. Jason Thompson. All of these guys were lauded as very hard workers and determined trainers. Gym rats, basically
Beasley. Conley. Alexander. A million varieties of hyper-athletic “upsiders.” Spencer Hawes. Guys with questionable gym commitments.
I’m not saying the Kings shouldn’t look at every available player. However, I’m much more comforted as a fan knowing the kid drafted is a huge gym rat. I’d rather see definitive steps every season than see flashes of brilliance every now and then. Sometimes you get both – and that’s always great, but better the former in my opinion.

NOTE: Please don’t nitpick this random assemblage of example players. I could sit down and draw up a real list, but that takes more thinking than I’m privy to right now.

Derrick Favors reminds me of Malone

And I definitely think he is the guy at the top of the list. Unless the team gets #1 overall. Then they have to take Wall and send K-Mart out for a 3rd big.

I like the thought of a defensive beast like Larry Sanders coming of the bench for us and changing the pace. Right now, I would give him a hard look after Favors.

Monroe and Cousins are offensively talented, but from what I’ve heard they have issues with defense and playing hard.

That Ogilvy kid at Vandy is intruiging. Could be a Bogut type player.

As someone who doesn’t really follow college hoops at all, this info is very much appreciated. I probably won’t watch any of these guys this year, but I’ll likely keep an eye on the headlines and maybe some boxscores, so this is very helpful in knowing who in particular to keep an eye on.

One piece of info that is missing here that would help me get a more full picture of these players is to know what year in school they are. Of course, I could just look it up myself, but maybe if you could add it to your post, it might also help some other people who read this and don’t know much about this fellas.

Thanks again for taking the time to post this.

Find a kid who has put his 10,000 hours in

Read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. He mentions a concept called putting your 10,000 hours in. In other words, it generally takes the best in the world at anything 10,000 hours of practice to perfect their craft. So look for those hard-working gym rats who’ve been playing for many years, not the gifted “project” athlete who “could” develop into a top talent.

This stuff is awesome

and rec’d, so please understand that when I say this that it is in no way intended to diminish all of this great information -

At this time last year, Tyreke Evans was slated to be about a #19 pick. The year before that, Jason Thompson was a fringe first round pick. A lot will change between now and the draft. Names will come out of nowhere, and other prominent names may disappear (Greg Monroe was a top 3 pick at the beginning of last year, and BJ Mullens was a near consensus #1 pick).

There is a long way to go before the talent and the draft slots are determined. But between now and then, please keep this information coming. It is gold.

Again, rec’d.

Donatas Motiejunas. This season he’s playing for an Italian team, so I was able to see him and I don’t like the guy at all.
Maybe he’s going to become a great player, but what I saw from him was quite awful. He seems to put zero effort on the floor, and, despite his talent, he never tries to carry the team on his shoulders when they are in difficulty.
