Beno was crucial for this win. Without him it would not have happened. Evans was not up to it this game for whatever reason.

It's best used for about a minimum of 50 games

Usually over the course of a season. You won’t see someone like TZ or myself ever seriously talk about a +/- over one game. Too many ways it can be skewed.

I'm still high on him

These 2 games proved why the Kings are still high on him. They were down on him because PW decided to bring him off the bench. This Hawes is what the Kings want every night. If they get it, he will put up monster numbers. Tonight was not a fluke. These are all things Spencer can do consistently.

Just like with May. Set the screen, roll out, get the pass and hit. Spence did it earlier in SA so I don’t see why they can’t be a good duo.

Trying a bit too hard still. You gotta love the effort, though.

That Hawes-Nocioni-Casspi front line really clicked.

Put JT

in his comfort zone and start him alongside Spence. With Hawes playing like he has the last couple of games it takes a lot of pressure of JT do have to do everything on the front line especially protecting the rim. May is too big a liability on defense IMO. Did I just make my first May fat joke?

I really can't wait to see how May performs off the bench

It’s not his fault that Spencer started slow.

I like May off the bench

and I think we’ll see some changes next game. Mason and May out of the starting lineup, being replaced by Nocioni and Hawes. I think that would give us our best chance at competing. Kings cannot afford to keep spotting teams a 10 point lead to start the game.

by gtrman1973 on Nov 2, 2009 10:29 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

NO I think Mason will start

Whether he plays big minutes or not is immaterial. May was only starting until Hawes got his act together. Now Hawes has his act together, what’s the point to start May?

On the other hand, Mason is not May and should start. So gotta disagree with that.

No PF

Omri is not a power forward. Not yet and probably never. Just like Peja was never a power forward. Height has nothing to do with it. Right now I like the possible rotations the Kings have, especially when Garcia gets back:

C – Hawes, JT, May
PF – JT, Nocioni, Brockman, May, K-9 (woof!)
SF – Casspi, Garcia, Nocioni, Mason, Greene (Reno bound?)
SG – Martin, Garcia, Mason, Greene
PG – Evans, Udrih, Rodriguez

I’m not sure yet whether Casspi is best starting or coming off the bench. The hustle and fire he provides off the bench is extremely valuable and the Kings might be better served using him as a B-Jax-like “spark plug” off the bench. Personally, I think that Nocioni should be starting at the SF position. Mason is a great player to use if needed for a few possessions to stop (or try to stop) a certain player on defense. Otherwise, Noc is much better all around.

Kings rule! (They are royalty - right?)

Comment malfunction

When I was at the Blazers and Jazz game in the preseason, I could not get over the height advantage given up by the Kings. If Noc gets significant minutes at PF, then that only worsens the chance of effective rebounding and post defense IMO.

by gtrman1973 on Nov 2, 2009 10:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Depends on the opponent

Naturally Noc isn’t going to be able to guard a team that starts two twin towers. But we match up well in small ball lineups.

You can always play him a lot of minutes if Mason isn’t playing well. Gives Omri more room for error. He played the best game of his short career tonight (by far), but that’s still only one game.

Actually not that tough of a month—except for the Texas teams back to back.

I just wanna see Reke continue to improve and make some smart decisions—aka, more drives and kick outs to open shooters. He needs to average 16-19 points to take pressure off of Martin. He could be a 15, 6, 6 guy every night.

Pretty forgettable game for May

I’m pretty sure Hawes earned a start.

The Tyreke-May two-man game was driving me nuts. Beno is a much better floor general than Evans at this point. Tyreke’s going to be very good, but he’s got a long way to go. His passes all seem to be juuuust out of the reach of the defenders. They’ll wise up to that and he’ll turn the ball over even more if he doesn’t stop passing across the court or while falling backwards.

Well, it helps

that we were playing Mike Conley Jr. instead of Chris Paul or Tony Parker tonight. Helped Beno contribute. And you got to hand it to Tyreke for playing with the ankle. Tough kid.

Definitely.

Tyreke was a horse. He didn’t get to the hoop as well today, and that’s probably due, in part, to his ankle. He’ll definitely have better nights than tonight—it’s just nice to know that our backup PG is quite capable in his own right. Not to say that Beno should be the full-time starter. I think that more often than not, Tyreke will be the better matchup for the Kings.

There are not a ton of backup PG's that give a team what they want

The bad thing is that Beno is overpaid. The good thing is that if he plays well the Kings may make a decision to keep him based on his play.

On the other hand, if he does play well the Kings may decide to get out from under his contract. The problem is that backup PG’s are not even a luxury in reality. I’m very positive the Kings will trade Noc by the deadline. Beno? I don’t think he entices enough teams to want to take him on so it’s probably a real moot point.

Reke has to use his ability to get to rim effortlessly

to set up crashing JT or Hawes in the lane with easy dunks or layups.
That wrap-around pass from him should be a bread-and-butter play.

Tyreke is still

more of a physical specimen than a true basketball player. Still pretty speclal for a 20-year-old playing his fourth NBA game on one good leg.

The thing about Tyreke

His instincts are good. He sees the play and he tries to make it, but his passes are not where they need to be, especially when he’s driving. And his shot needs some work. But he can get to the rim at-will and is the best point guard defender we have on the roster. Plus the guy is putting in ludicrous hours in the gym. I think he’ll improve alot by the end of the year.

Hawes will start on Wednesday, no doubt about it. PW may be stubborn, but he is not stupid.

I also think there is a 50-50 chance Omri will start on Wednesday. When PW studies the tape, he will see Omri did everything right tonight. Desmond Mason did not even see the light of day after the first 3 minutes of the game. How can you start a guy you played 3 minutes, then benched the next 50? Again, PW is no dummy.

Is the "starting" experiment over?

I think May and Mason sit. Also, what’s up with Hoss Brockman not getting any more minutes than he did? On a night when we got murdered on the boards, I would have thought he’d have gotten more “P.T.”

Mason played 6 mins

May played just over 9 mins. Brockman didn’t get into the game because Noc & JT were getting those mins at 4 tonight.

Would I rather have Thomas on Randolph instead of Brockman? You bet.

So everybody is ready to start

Hawes and Casspi. Why aren’t you ready to start Beno too? Evans has only played one solid game out of four. I think Hawes will start. But I don’t think Casspi or Evans are at a point in their games where they have earned the start.

Until Evans ankle heals completely, Beno should start

but Evans brings better defense, and a different offensive look. Beno’s defense looked better against Conley but he gets eaten alive against better PG’s. But, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen if Tyreke came off the bench for a while.

I’d like to see Tyreke pick up Beno’s short pop & drop shot.

Why Beno?

First, I’d argue the point that Evans has only had one solid game…if you look strictly at his offense, maybe. But the overall package has been pretty solid. Second, hasn’t Beno only played one solid game this season?

Westphal

It looks like WP is trying different combos, and finding out what each player can bring. If he’s any good he’ll be able to utilize the specific talents of each player and find them all roles. Or, at least that’s what I hope.

by amonk81 on Nov 2, 2009 11:13 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

No, he's going to ride whoever is playing well

but sometimes when you ride the lead horse you end up losing in the stretch.

Hawes came in at the 4min marke of the 1st, and PW played him all but 5 mins of the entire rest of the game. He didn’t get a rest of more than 1 minute, until he got 2 shots blocked because he had no lift in his jump. Then he got a full 3 minutes. Martin played all but 30 sec.

In the N.O. game PW went the whole 4th quarter with Brockman, and left Spencer & May on the bench. Brockman had been playing well, but in a close game having a energy guy who doesn’t score well or shot FT’s can be a liability.

It worked for PW in the Memphis game but not so well in the NO game. I hope this isn’t a trend for PW. Just because we aren’t deep at the SG & Center, doesn’t mean PW can leave these guys out there indefinitely. It’s an 82 game season, but they won’t make it to the end at this pace. Now, that we have a win, let’s hope PW settles into a normal rotation.

I think Westphal

played every minute or close in one of those multiple OT playoff classics (I think against Houston), so he probably thinks these guys should be able to do it as well.

They only had 7 guys with 20 or more mins.

I take that back

Only 5 guys had 20 or more mins for Memphis and it was the starters. Conley had the least amount of mins at 36.

Allen Iverson had a touch less than 18 mins, and DeMarre Carroll had about 16 mins. Nobody else had more than 7.

Likewise with Sac, You had 7 guys with 20+ mins, but you also had 3 guys log more than 6 mins each.

Sac was far more balanced in mins last night. It’s not even close.

He was born on a summer day, 1951
And with the slap of a hand
He had landed as an only son
His mother and father said “what a lovely boy”
We’ll teach him what we learned
Ah yes, just what we learned
We’ll dress him up warmly and
We’ll send him to school
It’ll teach him how to fight
To be nobody’s fool

Oh, oh, what a lonely boy
Oh, what a lonely boy
Oh, what a lonely boy

In the summer of ‘53 his mother
Brought him a sister
But she told him “we must attend to her needs”
“She’s so much younger than you"
Well, he ran down the hall and he cried
Oh, how could his parents have lied
When they said he was an only son
He thought he was the only one

Oh, oh, what a lonely boy
Oh, what a lonely boy
Oh, what a lonely boy

[Instrumental Interlude]

He left home on a winter day, 1969
And he hoped to find all the love
He had lost in that earlier time
Well, his sister grew up
And she married a man
He gave her a son
Ah yes, a lovely son
They dressed him up warmly
They sent him to school
It taught him how to fight
To be nobody’s fool

Oh, oh, what a lonely boy

Oh, what a lonely boy
Oh, what a lonely boy

He said he had no problems with his hamstring, but had a big problem with the playing time he got from coach Lionel Hollins.

“Go look at my resume and that will show you that I’m not a sixth man,” Iverson said. “I don’t think it has anything to do with me being selfish. It’s just who I am. I don’t want to change what gave me all the success that I’ve had since I’ve been in this league.”

The whole AI thing is mind-blowing

So…Memphis’ brass didn’t think this through before signing him?

The entire planet knows AI wants to start, why are you signing him and bringing him off the bench if you didn’t talk to him first?

I’m not saying Iverson is right for his stance, but everyone knows what it is after the Detroit mess last year; how you could not take it into account before signing him is terrible management by the front office.

Well

They are only paying him $3.5 million.

Besides, that’s a two -way equation: if Iverson is so hung up on still being “the man,” why did he sign with a team that’s embracing a youth movement for the most part?

Truth is, Iverson didn’t have any other options.

Truth No. 2: Iverson is still probably a better option than Conley, who may never really pan out as a top PG.

Also, it was his first game back, so I am sure he’s going to be playing more minutes, although I am not sure where they are going to come from. Maybe he takes 18 minutes a game from Conley and 8-12 from Mayo.

Not only are the Grizz paying him 3.5 million

They are also getting a lot of extra ticket sales because of him as well. I think Iverson was angry, and didn’t know how to express that. (Personally, it’s a terrible way to express that but whatever.)

Kinda crappy highlights

No replay of the tying basket that sent the game to OT? Fail. Reminds me of local TV high school football highlights where the cameraman shoots some footage in the first half and then hauls ass back to the station.

Good lowlight

That drive by Gay, was a good example of one of the Kings problems on defense. As Martin and Gay drove to the basket, not one other King was below the FT line. The bigs are setting up too far out in front of the basket, and players are getting behind them on fast breaks.

The same thing happened in the NO game when Sergio tried to guard Paul. Paul drove the length of the court with Sergio on him the whole time. But, when Paul made his layup, the deepest King other than Sergio, was May who was just getting to the dotted line.

There were other examples of players getting behind the Kings for easy baskets, off long passes on fast breaks. Add, to that the fact that the guards aren’t getting back when the bigs are shooting and we end up losing the Fast Break Pts battle.

Starting lineup should be:

Evans, Martin, Mason, JT, Hawes

Hawes, because May hasn’t earned the minutes lately, and if Spencer is going to be a dynamic decision maker, he needs to be that guy with the core of the team.

Nocioni should come off the bench, because with the bench he’s a core player and can do his thing. If he plays with the starters, he should be a role player, shooting open shots but not dominating the ball. He needs more freedom than that, which is why he leads the bench for me and plays the 4thQ when we have good matchups or he’s going well.

Casspi needs to keep coming off the bench. Its working right now, he doesn’t need the pressure of squaring off against starting small forwards yet. Give him time to keep being successful.

Nice to see

A drawn-up play that works at the end of a game. Haven’t seen much of that since Adelman left, although I was flashing back to a play in Theus’ tenure where Bibby picked (I think D Wade) and Kevin was free for a pass form Miller that led to a layup.

One aspect of the play that's interesting I thought

If that pass isn’t there, what was the rest of the play?

Were we going to let Spencer take the top of the key jumper to decide the game if the passing options weren’t there?

If so, its a large amount of faith placed in Hawes at crunch time.

Because I just saw a youtube clip of it at CK, and it very much looked like to me that Spencer wasn’t even in a position to shoot the ball.

No, I wouldn't have been bothered by it

I do think it says a lot about what Westphal is doing with Spencer though.

If PW really had issues with Spencer, is he drawing up the play that way and putting the game in his hands? I think it was a statement to a couple of things:

1) like coolcat said, its a team
2) he has some faith in Spencer as a core part of the team

Not to blow one play too much out of proportion or anything, but I did find it an interesting decision by the coach.

Only 1.7secs left after Beno's basket

I don’t know if there was time to pass to anyone else.

In Martin’s post game interview, he indicated that they expected Memphis to double him, and that the Kings needed to spread the big shot around. Not to continue to rely on Martin (my paraphrase). They had been running th offense through Hawes in the high post and beno off screens, the entire game. Hawes was hitting his medium range shots, so I suspect that Hawes taking the shot was the last option.

There was plenty of time HT

1.7 secs is an eternity to get a shot off at the end of an NBA game. Omri was also wide open on the other side of the court. He would have at least gotten a wide open look if.

If you watch this,
watch the beginning of the clip HT. You’ll notice that Omri moves to the open spot and Rudy Gay didn’t even react. Omri would have been wide open even if Beno hadn’t been.

A bit of good fortune

Beno did a great job of using his body to shield Randolph and also making the shot with his right (off) hand. If Randolph blocks the shot or if Beno misses it, we are crying in our soup. Maybe the better options were faking the pass and taking the shot or passing to Casspi for the open three to win or lose the game right there.

Best thing is it’s nice to see us run a final play where we actually had multiple options. And it’s truly great to see us find a way to win a game like that instead of believing we will find a way to cough it up. Nice building block for the team.

It was also nice to see Beno exert some leadership. The team needs it. The previous bucket he made on the short jumper was just as crucial and came late in the shot clock. Usually that results in a shot clock violation, but Beno really stuck with it and used all his weapons to get a quality shot and then make it.

I also enjoyed seeing multiple offensive options come to the fore in the game as a whole to match the loaded offensive arsenal the Griz brought to town.

Your right about there being enough time

But, there’s no guarantee that Omri makes a clean catch. And, we only needed a 2, so why gamble.

Also, Spencer made a couple of shots for that area already, so I let him take the shot.

Why not let the angel balance on the head of a pin juggling chainsaws & matchsticks....

I mean, this is totally counter-intuitive in my mind. The question was what if Beno didn’t cut?

Well, he did. I mean I don’t realize to be flip, but I only think there are so many options. Pass to Beno (happened), Spence take shot or passing to Omri.

We know what happened. I find it difficult to speculate on what should have happened if what happened didn’t.

Feels good to get the win

Was constantly checking my phone for the score, and I saw it at Memphis 110, Kings 108 with like 5 seconds left and thought “Oh great, here we go again”, but it looks like we actually have a coach who can draw up actual plays.

I think Spencer won his starting spot tonight, but I’m still for Mason starting. It’s not like Mason is going to play all that much, just have him start and pull him if the teams offense is lacking.

Martin had another great shooting performance, but all the minutes worry me. Also, he took 27 shots, In 4 games this season, he’s already had two games where he’s shot more than he’s ever had in his career. But I’m ok with that if he’s getting 48 points.

Casspi had a very nice game it looks like, but reading the game thread I’m very disappointed in Jerry. Cassptastic? Omnipotent? If Jerry has a twitter, we need to suggest Bomb-ri.

Tyreke probably shouldn’t have played today, I think his ankle was bothering him a lot. Other than points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists in 24 minutes isn’t bad. But if he isn’t feeling better Wednesday, I’d be fine having him sit. No need to aggravate it.

And Beno. This is the Beno I want to show up every game.

Damn it feels good to win. Let’s get to 4-4 guys!

We need starters who can get out to a lead not get us into a 10+ point hole within the first 5 minutes. Hawes and Nocs need to start.

I to am concerned about PW playing guys too many minutes

hope he changes now that he has his first win. PW played Hawes too long also. He only got a one minute break after entering in the 1st half. And, the only reason he got a 3 minute break in the second half, was that his legs gave out so badly, the he got 2 shots blocked under the basket.

My thinking on Mason is that Omri is going to take the starting job before Christmas. Because the Kings aren’t going 14 of 25 from 3pt range very often. And, we’re not going to get alot of scoring out of our bigs on a regular basis. We can’t afford Mason’s lack of offense. And, if Mason isn’t starting and ends up get limited minutes as the 3rd SF, we might as well play Donte. Send Mason packing and save the money to spend on another center.

Mason's staying for the duration of the year

Get used to it. Especially with Cisco out. But don’t expect him to play more than 20 minutes ever.

The way I see it, start Mason to bring that little extra defense early, but if we start off bad offensively you have the option of bringing in Casspi. Casspi is who I want to be our 6th man while Cisco’s out.

Could very well be that he stays

PW seems to overplay the guys he like. And, I expect him to like Omri & Noc better. Mason got 6 mins. with a zero stat line in every category. I don’t expect PW to like that very much. Once Mason loses his starting job, he’s on the fast train to unemployment. Cause after that I don’t expect him to get 10mpg.

but do you seriously think it can be said on TV?

Thousands of the man’s countrymen have died due to shelling and suicide bombs from the Palestinians and thousands of Palestinians have died from Israeli attacks.

There’s a pretty good chance Omri would be offended if he heard it, and it’s almost a sure thing that Jerry would lose his job if he said it on TV.

And when he gives them a short breather, it’s a really short breather.

What’s the over/under on Casspi being ROY? If he keeps this production through New Years, his name should pop up on the top 10 ROY list, if not top 5.
