I do believe that it is important and fair to paint an accurate picture of a player’s abilities, in that there is often a tendency to hype players up only to personalize their inability to meet those expectations. We attribute the incongruity between expectation and reality not to our own shortcomings as analysts, but to some failing of the athlete. This is most common at the team level, where fans will make a youngster out to be their savior–despite evidence to the contrary–only to turn on them.

The global development of the media (especially the Internet obviously) during the past decade is a major factor in this, plus the huge commercialization of the players.

It was amazing he even came back after that accident, so even if you are just joking its not funny.

What I gathered from this is that
we all need to be putting WAY less pressure on Jon Brockman…
Mancakes is only human. He can’t turn this team around on his own, no one can. I know that it has been said that he has the talent to be a top 10 linebacker in this league, but we can’t expect it overnight. The truth is, he may only become an average linebacker, maybe even a sub-par fullback.
Let’s all take a step back, and be thankful for what we’ve got. For we may not have a big ol’ Cadillac, with gangsta’ white walls, a diamond in the back, a sunroof top, and we may never dig the scene with a gangster lean.
But we do have Jon Brockman. And that is good enough for me.
... Now let me show you why they call me the Velour Fog...

Nope
It’s an explanation of why we all hate Peaches so much. It’s not because he is such a loud mouth, know-it-all, sack of hot air. It’s because we had such high expectations for him when he first became a Kings announcer at the impressionable age of twleve.

In other words....
unrealistic expectations on the part of the observer contribute to the change from hope to offense (anger) when the truth is realized.

Interesting. I concur.
One may even be so inclined to interpret the textual language as the author’s hypothesis that it is simply human socio-pathological impulse that compels the collective public conscious, albeit, in reality, occurring on an individual level, to engage in a shared disposition in which majority opinion has a tendency to adversely characterize, and therefore disparage, the individual professional entity who has failed to meet the subjective talent ceiling that was artificially created for said entity.
This common occurrence manifests itself, usually regardless of actual fault on behalf of the professional individual entity, where a misplaced belief has taken root, creating the illusion that the entity has the necessary characteristics, including proper physical, mental and environmental attributes, which would allow the entity to perform at such a level that said entity would transcend not only himself or herself, but an entire organization into an elite operation. When the desired outcome is not achieved, the negative societal phenomenon presents itself.
The potency at which negative public disparagement manifests is usually directly proportional to three factors; 1) the numerical slot in which said entity was chosen by the organization for which it will compete, 2) the rate at which compensation is disbursed to the entity, and 3) the comparative actual ability of other entities participating in the selection process wherein the said entity was chosen by an organization prior to other entities who have demonstrated a more favorable outcome in the realization of their individual talents. The third factor is believed to be half as outcome determinative as the first two factors.
Thus it could be said, that what the author proposes is a formula for this phenomena, which would read as follows:
Where H = Hype, $ = Rate of Compensation, X = Numerical Slot of Selection, T = Time, and WTF = Public Disparagement.
(H$ x 2) X + T = WTF

F = Force, B = Bubble, b = burst, Ce = CloudyEyes, :( = someone pointing out that you’re actually a jackass.
Ce + :( = FBb

you are such an attorney
first off: StR will not pay you by the word. We already know you are reading this site while adding clock to your billable hours.
2nd: you have sufficiently confused the simple syntax with veral ambiguity
3rd: damn, you are good at what you do. You slip into “the language” with quick finesse. I hope I don’t need your services, but if I do… I know where to look.

I would add another factor: 4) Need
The need of the of the fan and/or dependence of the organization upon a player, new or old, also contribute to unrealistic expectations. If a great team gets a high draft pick and he does not do well its not nearly as bad as a bad team getting a high draft pick who’s lame.

This gem should also apply generally:
But while [Donnie] Walsh made his choice and will have to own up to it the remainder of Jennings’ career, [Jordan] Hill did nothing to put himself in this position. His career should be judged a success or a failure on its own merits, and not because of where he happened to go in the draft.
