Three thoughts
1. Unifying resources behind the Kings could be a plus.
2. That’s 15 or so fewer dates ARCO or a future arena would have an event. That’s a minus.
3. This is really too bad for the subsection of Sacramento (mostly families with young girls, like Bobby Jackson’s family) which supports the Monarchs hard over the years.

So much for "next"
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye
Can’t say I’m too heartbroken that the Maloofs freed up some much needed cash by ditching their summer charity case. The WNBA has too many teams anyways, the talent’s spread too thin. This should help raise the overall quality of the league a bit

Also gotta love that there's so little to remember the Monarchs by the writer mentioned they were a charter WNBA team twice in that short space

Yeah, so did the Soul in the AFL
But nobody really though that Philly’s pro title drought ended until the Phillies won.
There are only 4 championships that matter. An NBA title, the World Series, a Super Bowl, and the Mustard Belt (World Hot Dog Eating Championship). Pretending any other sports championship matters is just bargining with mediocrity

Either way, the Monarchs have been a great organization
They’ve been to the playoffs nearly every year since their inception. Were in several conference finals and two Finals in their short run. And they won a fucking Championship.
That is an impressive record. I can only hope as much for our boys in purple/

Yeah but...
None of that success matters because they’re gone. I feel bad for all the employees and such, but if the Monarchs and the WNBA mattered so much championship teams wouldn’t be folding or relocating. The league needs to kill this experiment.

Yet the value of their investment has most likely increased since they bought it
Can’t say the same for their investment in the Monarchs.
Hard to say since they folded the Monarchs.
But their purchase price was 0.

They joined every other Sacramento team in a meaningless sports league that won a title... We must lead the country in titles no one cares about...

Wow, Unfortunate turn of events.
Best wishes to everyone in the Monarchs organization.
You guys have done your job with the best of them, bringing Sac a championship . The Monarchs have been a class organization top to bottom, and it’s unfortunate that the financial realities of the current economy had to take their toll.

Surprising
I went the inaugural season home opener game, and I don’t think I ever watched another WNBA game.

As cynical as I am most of the time
it really is hard not to feel bad for the fans of the team; not just the young girls that genuinely look-up to these women, but to the men and women of all ages to whom it really means something to have woman athletes competing at this level, even if their spotlight is comparatively small . It’s easy to diminish the performance level and the importance of the league to the greater women’s psyche in this country (“Women Movement”, Women’s Rights, Feminism, girls’ self-esteem, whatever you want to call it), but the bottom line is there will be a lot genuine heartbreak in the city today, and I think we should do our best to respect that.

Hey the WNBA has it's limitations, but this is the league that essentially brought Sacramento

now, let’s review: what were you all complaining about again?
by betweentheeyes on Nov 21, 2009 12:52 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Ignore zee douchebags
The WNBA is doomed to failure, and as someone who has never watched an WNBA game, I played into that. The reality is that these woman worked their ass off to be top level athletes, their product isn’t that bad at all (I watched a fair amount of womens bball in college) and to represent the city of Sacramento. Quite frankly, there isn’t much GOOD representing the city these days, so all of us from there / who still live there should probably pay a little respect. The world knows Sacramento as the home of a huge deficit, an action star governor, a sagging economy, and protests. It was good to mix in ‘Champion’, even if it was for a sport as small on the national radar as the WNBA.
Thanks for representing our city, and thanks for bringing in a major league CHAMPIONSHIP.

Could care less, honestly.
But that’s just me. The market is just. The market is fair. Not enough resources to support it and the WISE move is to fold it. Hopefully this channels more positive resources the Kings way to get them back to the top, sooner.
Sucks to hear that
I hope someone can take over the team and move them to Oak/SF, like I keep reading. I know if the company I work for folded, I’d be heartbroken/stressed/sad.
I'm sad for the players staff and fans of the monarchs
but now I don’t have to listen to “Monarch’s talk” on KHTK anymore! yeee-haw!
Wow, the Maloofs always seemed like they loved that team. I wasn’t a fan but never saw one reason to disrespect the team/concept like so many others. It’s a significant loss to others in the community.
I don't think...
…saying that because they folded the team, that they didn’t love the franchise any less. It’s just business. They were no longer a viable option to sustain. I don’t think they want to bleed their own money to maintain the franchise. Enough is a enough.
The WNBA is an NBA supported league. It relies on the NBA to bring in fans and recognition
That takes a financial investment and it is apparent that the ROI was not working for the Maloofs.
That said, and I am not a fan of the game, it is a shame that these dedicated athletes have one less place to exhibit their talents. Professional sports is a money making venture – if it isn’t than they aren’t.
