I don't see Evans, Martin and Cisco averaging 60 when all are healthy

I just don’t. Martin will still get his 25 most nights, but Cisco will eat up some of Evans’ time, while also getting a ton at the 3. I would expect Reke’s points to come down a little bit, between Martin & Garcia, plus there is the inevitable rookie wall.

Always better to have too many options than too few, that’s for certain, and it’s all I know.

Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.

you all must be expecting more than I am

I thought this was a wonderful game by the Kings. They are young, not smart, have little offense, had reckless defense, subpar rebounding, top 2 guys out, and they were in it with 47 minutes to go. They should have lost by 20+. This was ugly from start to finish and yet the score says otherwise.

by betweentheeyes on Nov 21, 2009 8:11 PM PST reply actions

Kings shouldn’t have even been in this game. This team plays hard, 1-12. I am constantly impressed with them. I don’t even hate Beno anymore. My life has changed because of these scrappy Kings.

Yep.

They wanted to see where the Kings stood I think in another month I suspect. I suspect the Kings won’t be hovering around 500 much past December if even then.

Then again, the Kings have some very winnable games coming up too. So it may not make a difference. But, I think the brass knew November was always going to be a bit easier than people realized. It’s December that’s going to knock this team out.

The Kings are going to face a real rough patch in January, and I’m 100% depending on a returning Kevin Martin to turn this team around after the all-star break. It’ll be too late for the season, but it’ll restore order to a pecking order that is increasingly running wild.

Quick question on the coach of the year race?

Early leaders outside of Paul Westphal and Ric Adleman? O’brien is certainly responding well too – will the award come down to which team makes the playoffs? Van Gundy has to be commended for responding so well to a retooling of his team. Rick Carlisle will get attention if the Mavs continue, so will Alvin Gentry. If the Heat make the playoffs again, Spoelestra will certainly get consideration. What type of effort will it take for Flip or Eddie Jordan to get interest? Is there anyone else I’m missing?

Agree

Some very good and very bad coaches on the list. Not an award that is based on any real stats or indication of excellence. GM does a good job or the team gets a superstar in the draft and the coach wins an award. Rarely does the improvement largely equate to exquisite coaching compared to one’s piers. In some cases COYs have been fired in the next season or two. Amazing that one so skilled could forget how to coach that quickly.

by SPTSJUNKIE on Nov 21, 2009 10:17 PM PST up reply actions

If anybody read what Byron Scott's agent said after he got fired

One of the things he mentioned was that Scott had won Coach of the Year. If you want what I really think about the award, keep this in mind: Phil Jackson has won it just once (1996).

If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about the actual award, than I don’t know what will.

Why Del Harris is a good coach?

Because it’s true. Del could still have coached for a few teams if he had pursued those opportunities. Of all the coaches that fans hate, Del is probably the best of that lot.

Would I rather have Del Harris than Paul Westphal? No. But, that’s not to say that Del Harris hasn’t had an effect as a quality bench coach in this league either.

Hey thanks.

It’s been a fun team to watch, they play a really attractive game of basketball with the current lineup. I think basketball purists would enjoy watching the Rockets.

Sacramento is yet another explosive young team for us to worry about in coming years. I thought having Portland and OKC in that role was enough. But Sacramento is moving quickly into that discussion.

Yeah they're a major shot blocking/rebounding/interior defense presence away from being in that discussion

I actually think OKC has a similar issue despite what they’re doing defensively at the moment.

On the other hand, it’s nice that people recognize this team having a future. That hasn’t been the case lately (nor should it have been).

You really could draft a defensive specialist.

With Martin, Evans, Thompson, Casspi, Noccioni, Greene, yeesh, that’s a lot of firepower. Honestly, drafting a couple of designated defender types, who have a good 3pt shot, a la Battier and (less lately) Ariza makes sense.

I thought Hawes was supposed to fit that C role?

Worrell

fits into the “Genial Homer” category. He’s all for the Rockets, but not a moron, and is certainly a pleasant guy. Bullard is fun to listen to, and he has low, low tolerance for touch fouls and especially flopping.

Listening to him shout (loud enough for the players to hear him):

is really something to savor.

Clyde is a nice man, and beloved in his home town.

A great announcer? He was given many gifts, but that isn’t one of them. Calvin Murphy was just such a maniac he was fun for us. You always wondered if he’d challenge an opponent to a shooting contest or something, just to make fun of them. And he’d win, too. Or punch someone out.

(If you haven’t guessed, he’s one of my favorite NBA players ever. Not many 5’9" guys can go to the HOF. Compare Murphy’s advanced stats to any of the other great short players. The only better one is Kevin Johnson (a woefully unappreciated player).

He still can

Not sure he is a shut down type, might still need our D center off the bench. Hawes has been up and down this year, but he is only 21, in what’s really his second true season (lost most of his rookie year to an injury), playing for his first real coach and learning to play without just drifting to the perimeter. Needless to say there are growing pains and some people here are more patient than others ;)

Big men often take more time.

It’s just the way of it. For one thing, they get called so much more often, for essentially nothing, early in their careers, that it stunts their development. Of this, I am convinced.

I think also

your body and strength tends to develop as you get older (in your 20s at least). Not as much problem for a guard who penetrates and shoots, but a big deal for a player who needs to hold position in the paint. Same reason a 21 year old in the NFL would be a disaster/injury waiting to happen.

Texans drafted a 19 year old D lineman- Okoye.

He’s, I think 22 now. I’m worried he’s going to be expensive before he’s really good, but this year has been better. But sending, essentially, a big baby into the trenches – it’s surprising he’s done so well.

I think you are right about centers, btw. Only a few were great out of the chute, and those guys tend to be in the HOF (barring injury).

He is the only C the Kings have at the moment Xiane

But he is hardly the C of the future, and the Kings need far more effective defense than what they have at the moment on the interior. And, that’s with Spencer having made strides defensively. Spencer, despite what some may think, is a significantly better interior defender than Jason Thompson is at the moment.

On the other hand, a shot blocking/great rebounding/interior defense type player would be a huge boon to a team that already has much of everything else. It would be the next step.

I don't know a lot about Hawes, honestly.

I just thought he looked pretty good, that he could be Przybilla with more offense if it comes right with him. You can work with that, given the team you have. Also, though, you need a guy to slow down, or shut down wings. He can come off the bench, but he needs to be there on a team that has a lot of guys who seem to really focus on their offense.

Maybe Udoka does that?

The only plus defenders the Kings have at the moment

Are Tyreke Evans, Ime Udoka and Kenny Thomas. Spencer Hawes and Donte Greene can definitely get there, and everyone else could probably tap out as a good defender at their best. Donte is playing D?

Really? He certainly has the ability. We were never sure he’d find the desire to D up.

I was sad to see him (and Batum, who was briefly Rockets property) go. It made sense, though, to get Artest, as we thought a team with Yao, McGrady and the bench (now starting) was ready to contend, especially if Artest was your 3rd/4th option.

PW

made him commit to it. He’s up and down like any young player. But man he has the potential to be a very good individual and great team defender. May lack the foot speed to be a great individual defender, but is tall and athletic enough to guard the versatile PFs and his length makes him a good help defender and lane clogger especially when he plays SF. Reminds me a bit of Lamar Odom in that regard.

Hawes

is more fluid and athletic than PBilla, though may not have the same rebounding instincts. He reminds me more of a young Vlade or less athletic Pau. Not that he will ever reach their levels, but he shows the ability to be very advanced offensively. He has multiple post moves with both hands, can shoot the ball and has shown flashes of being a very good passer. Defensively? Remains to be seen. Provides some weak side shot blocking, but gets caught out of position and doesn’t have the strength yet to play good man D against bigger centers and gets bullied. Needs to box out better too.

Yeah

You still only see flashes because he is struggling to fit into the new O right now and because he is still skinny enough that he has trouble holding his position down low. So even though he has an impressive array of post moves, most stronger centers can move him off his spot. So a lot of his scoring comes off of movement instead of true post up situations. Hopefully that will change as he gets older and his body continues to fill out.

Good point...

about Phil Jackson. And the irony is that the year Scott won, his victory was a factor of Paul finally staying healthy, West emerging in his 3rd season (shocker, a 3rd year player emerging) and the acquisition of Tyson Chandler. It’s not like he took the same roster from the year before and simply changed his coaching to make the team a contender. Pointless award. Unless PW wins. Then it will be a great tribute to his excellent job with the Kings ;)

Jennings is playing well

An All-Star level PG really to be honest with you. I don’t think he’s going to keep it up, but I didn’t think he’d play as well as he has through his first 11 games either.

I imagine

He will hit the wall this year, but he is a special talent no doubt. Look forward to Evans and him balling for years. Give my personal edge to Evans, not out of homerism, but because he actually shows the ability to be a special player on both sides of the court. No doubt Jennings can be a special offensive talent. However, it will be interesting to see if he can develop on the other side of the court as well or if he becomes one of these players who has to score just to outscore the guy he is guarding.

by SPTSJUNKIE on Nov 21, 2009 10:38 PM PST up reply actions

Most PG's in history couldn't slow down the other PG

So really it’s not that big of a deal. Besides, all Jennings has to do is stop penetration against most players and he’ll do fine on that end. The key to Milwaukee’s defense is Bogut being healthy and on the court.

Wait. What?

I mean I don’t really agree. There’s a huge difference between having a Rondo/Westbrook and a Nash/Bibby defending the opposing point guard. I just think Reke has more tools defensively. So I am curious if Jennings can develop good defensive instincts or if he will be another all offensive guard. Am I misinterpreting what you are writing somehow?

by SPTSJUNKIE on Nov 21, 2009 10:51 PM PST up reply actions

Rondo & Westbrook's have not always existed

Rondo is a great defender, but he isn’t a great offensive player because he simply can’t shoot. Westbrook can be better as a player, but Jennings isn’t like either of those guys. He’s more of a Tony Parker type of player.

Ok, understood

I think that’s part of what will make the Reke/Jennings match up fun. They are both gifted. Jennings may have a higher ceiling offensively, but Reke may have a higher overall ceiling cause of his defense. Really to early to say anything for certain with 2 19/20 year olds, but I’m excited to watch them play and have pundits debate who is better for the next decade.

Jennings is far more explosive offensively. The Kings knew this when they took Reke. Which would you rather have?

Reke

Anyone who has ever played ball with me knows I am all about D. They call me Hawk the Lock for a reason :) It’s one of the things I love about Reke, he can be a star offensive player, but can also be special defensively. It’s why Rubio is an afterthought to me at this point.

Funny moment

I have a draft party every year with good friends and good whiskey. One of my best friends is a die hard Warriors fan and we had been analyzing the draft non-stop. I have a video of him as the Warriors picked. At the time they were supposedly 50-50 on Curry and Hill. Both of us were bullish on Curry and hated Hill. His reaction to the pick is like a little kid on Christmas. Then the Knicks took Hill as we both thought they should take Jennings. Good times. Although maybe you had to be there :)

by SPTSJUNKIE on Nov 21, 2009 11:26 PM PST up reply actions

Probably (in being there)

I was a bit angry and foaming at the mouth by the time Evans was picked to even care. Literally, I was cussing and pacing back in forth in my room screaming how much I hated the Evans pick. Luckily I was pretty drunk by the end of the draft and was able to sleep it off. Than I sat down and thought about the pick. In time I can talk myself into anything.

Lol

Wasn’t there to see you of course, but I remember how mad you were. At least there’s some consolation in knowing the player you would have picked is dominating as well. The big time Rubio = god, Evans = bad people may be eating big time crow in a few years. Or worse the pro-Thabeet/Hill crowd, though that one was much smaller.

by SPTSJUNKIE on Nov 21, 2009 11:38 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't sleep on Rubio being good either

He’s going to get plenty of PT at a very good Spanish team in Barcelona very close to his hometown to develop. Rubio will be better for the next 2 years in Barcelona. The Wolves still have an asset in Rubio until they don’t as far as I’m concerned.

I have no problem with the Kings taking Evans now, and I see exactly why they did. It’s a good thing they chose to do so, but on the other hand had I been involved in the decision I would have agreed with it. I just didn’t know all the things they knew.

He's not doing a lot of PG type stuff, though is he?

I haven’t really gotten a chance to watch him much, so I’m wondering if a “two PG” lineup, like Houston often runs, would make more sense for MIL? Luke Ridnour notched 13 assists tonight, to Jennings’ 2 in the same minutes, so I guess they are doing that. What a pick though – any kid who breaks Kareem’s scoring record for the Bucks…

It depends whether Ridnour is in the game

Gotta remember that the Bucks didn’t have Bogut, Mbah a Moute or Redd (obviously not in order of importance) and they absolutely needed Jennings to get hot in the 2nd half of the game tonight.

I did watch the game, and it wasn’t what Jennings did that was so special. It’s that people are starting to pick his game apart to see what he isn’t doing, and that’s pretty unusual for a 11 game in rookie.

I think you are right.

There’s no reason to look for flaws in Jennings game, I’m really just asking if he’s more of a SG playing PG. But honestly, the traditional roles are so stretched now, and some positions are essentially vacant (back to basket centers for example) that (and someone else said this, can’t remember who) there are only the following: PG, Wing, Big Man.

He's had

Some higher assist games, this was a lower one for him. David Thorpe actually gives a good breakdown of his PG instincts in this week’s rookie report on ESPN (although he pretty much uses one play as being indicative of Jennings overall ability).

by SPTSJUNKIE on Nov 21, 2009 10:57 PM PST up reply actions

Xiane I think you're exactly right

Positions matter a lot less than people think. It’s not that this is new to the NBA; it’s hardly been the case throughout history. It’s just that few fans caught onto it. Jerry Reynolds has been famous for asking who the PG was on the Celtics when Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge played there. Both brought a lot of great things as players, but was either a pure PG? No. Neither needed to be.

At the same time, there are really G’s, wing players and big men in the NBA. When you find the mix that works for you, and the mix that complements your players the best to take you the furthest is when your job is done. As I’m sure you’re aware, that job is never finished.

I'd add

Instead of “is he a PG?” A better question in today’s NBA should be, can he be the Primary Ball Handler (PBH)? Most teams have a PG who brings the ball down, but one player who handles and initiates the offense. Kobe, Roy, Wade, Lebron are all PBHs though none of them are PGs. And any team would love to have them over a pure point guard any day of the week. Nowadays when any of my Laker or Warrior fan friends ask me if I think Reke is a PG, I just say it doesn’t matter, he has the tools and appears to be our PBH regardless of what positions he qualifies for in ESPN’s Fantasy Sports.

TMac's shot is otherworldly.

If he decides to focus on what he’s excellent at: midrange shooting, passing – he could have a good end to his career. That is very much in the air, as is his health.

A Jordanesque focus on D, with an unstoppable turnaround and fade away, would work well here, though. McGrady is so tall, and elevates so well, that he’s not easily defended as a guard. Flying dunks are probably history now. We’ll see.

Of course

Jordan also played great D. T-Mac is a sad case to me of a player who coasted on talent for awhile and then just as he was seeming to “get it” started getting consistent injuries. Xiane can probably elucidate on this better than I can, but right before his injuries got really bad he seemed to be developing a good attitude, better D and certainly that end game killer instinct. But when the body goes, it goes.

When this team starts averaging 110 points a night, that’s going to be harder to do. We sympathize. You’d think Houston had farted in church when we dared to play LA tough without our stars.

Go on, try to beat them. Try to score on them. Stay in front of those guards. Try to tap out an offensive rebound on that Lilliputian front line. They're so awful, you're so good ... go on. Beat ‘em. - Kelly Dwyer on The Rockets

Yep.

Houston’s a tough team, coached by a high quality coaching staff, and the organization is of very high quality. Les Alexander is a lot of things, but he is a quality owner.

It’s fun to support a team that really seems to “get it” all down the line. It’s a bracing change from the Astros, for example.

Ah, don't get me started.

The Oilers put together some amazing amazing team. And then broke our hearts. Again. And again. And again. Houston is a city that essentially fired its owner (the lovable) Bud Adams.

Drayton McLain has slowly penny-pinched one of the best player development systems out of existence. He can’t help himself. It’s painful, though.
