I actually wonder if this is a pity firing as Thorn and Vandeweigh know they are fighting for their jobs (both have contracts that expire in 2010) long term with the franchise.

Either way, well wishes to Frank. A quality head coach to say the least.

Quality head coach indeed

He was still coaching his ass off against the Kings and did his best to try to get that W. You can’t blame the guy for that. Unfortunately, firing coaches is easier than waving players.

Good luck coach. I have no doubt he’ll be picked up by someone in the next coming years (if not sooner).

Woj sounded off

with this to say:

"Rod didn’t want Lawrence to have that record attached to his name," one source close to situation said.
I’m not shocked at all someone would say that. I’m just not. But that’s exactly what it sounded like to me.

That sucks for him but I'm sure he'll be coaching again soon.

Like Woj quote – that’s pretty cool if that’s the case for him getting fired.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

I would have fired him after the Hack-A-Jew

I really didn’t like a thing about the strategy. I know the broadcast buffered him by saying it was playing the percentages. However his team was behind 8-10 points with 3 minutes to go. The only way to come back is by going on a run which is not going to happen putting the other team consistently on the free throw line. Even worse, his best player just made a jump shot that had been alluding him all game, maybe he was ready for streak.

This is the freaking NBA, it’s a players league. The better coaches know to just manage player match ups and avoid micro-managing the game. Losing your cool and yelling across the court at your players to foul someone off the ball is so freaking bush league I cannot believe no one brought this up. Players want to play, not have their coach take center stage and try to dictate every possession, that’s for college. Yes, I realize Popovich got away with this strategy one time.

I know some people like Frank and his lunch pale mentality but I thought the smart coach was Westphal pretending to be half asleep on his bench without a concern for Casspi on the free throw line. That’s instilling confidence in a player, not the guy who just ripped control of the game away from his team.

in fairness; hindsight makes all decisions incredibly wise or blatantly dumb

firing a Coach who started his stint with 13 straight wins and now has 16 straight losses only serves to demonstrate that the NBA game is fickle. There are a thousand ways to win and a million ways to lose. Pointing to one game and one decision is harsh. We could argue the sense of sacking Lawrence Frank, but it is useless, it is done.

Last I checked, getting a Coach of the Year award is a sure sign your coaching future is in jepoardy. It is a tough game, and as any coach will acknowledge, you are only as good as your last Natting win.

Come on . . . was Brad Miller an All Star in 2008?

I thought the incident I described crystallized a huge issue on that Nets team. It’s not 2005 anymore (or whatever year Frank pulled it off). His mastery of the x’s and o’s of basketball might have helped that prior Nets team but was driving this Nets team nuts. I was embarrassed for the Nets players. His scream echoed across the arena and it was apparent no player on the floor wanted to foul . . . which is why he was at half court screaming. You could see there was no trust between the factions and his ass had to hit the road. Yes, the hack-a-jew was a still desperate, dumb decision. It wasn’t a 3 point game, it was an 8 point game. Making a stink about it with players while the game was still going was bush league.

This is ridiculous

The guy was trying to coach his team and motivate them anyway he could so that they would respond on the court. Do you blame the guy for trying to win the game? If it was 3 point game there wouldn’t be reason to foul; an 10 point game with over 2 minutes left (because that’s when they started to foul) was still within reach. I was rooting for the opposite team but I could appreciate the other coach trying his best to win a game and getting his guys to not give up. Let’s see how you react when things have not been going your way for a while and are about to lose your job.

Yes, maybe it was his time to get fired, no one can argue that, but criticizing the guy for still trying his best to coach his guys and trying to get a win is plain ridiculous.

Lawrence Frank is a good coach

He’ll be back on the sidelines of a NBA team soon enough.
