I think this post is a bit misleading
Having read the article, it doesn’t really sound like Jalen Rose is zinging Martin that hard….

I just had to chuckle
I don’t blame Kevin for thinking “It’s just Jalen Rose.”

But hey
Jalen Rose had how many All-Star appearances? Oh, yeah. None.

Yeah, guess I should read the whole thread
before commenting. I hate when I post and then see the same thing farther down. Of course if I do that I’ll likely forget to come back up and comment. So, whatever.

Quote of the article
“My trainer, David Thorpe, he doesn’t even look at my points anymore,” Martin said. “He’s so locked in on (me) playing defense. I’m trying to be active with steals. … That’s just one of those areas I want to keep working on. I’m taking pride in that area. I’m driven in that area. It’s just not putting up big numbers anymore.”
Victory is tasty.

Kevin Martin is Currently tied at 10th in STEALS with Gerald Wallace and John Salmons averaging 2.25 steals a game currently ahead of Ron Artest, D Wade, LeBron James, Chris Paul
(true thats its early in the season but the fact that most of these guys played Defense there whole time in the NBA that they are behind KMart? in steals?)
Last year, Kevin was 49th averaging 1.20 Steals a game. I think his “D” has improved, SO FAR all i ask is that you keep it up Kevin

in Rose's defense
For him to call out an exceptional scorer as not All-Star worthy is actually admirable. It shows a maturity and humility. He knows he was one of those scorers once upon a time and it must have hurt that he never made the All Star team. But rather than blame the world, it seems like he understands he just wasn’t good enough.
And by the way, Rose in his prime was an incredibly clutch scorer (deep into the playoffs) and a real go-to guy. Kev is prolific and efficient, but I’d put Rose in his prime as a step up on the ladder as a scorer.
Separately, I love what Kev says about defense. And if he can turn into a grind it out guy who plays with a ton of heart every night…then yeah, he’ll be an All-Star.
Life is every mammal's journey from very very wet to very very dry.

Kevin is doing and saying all the right things so far this year.
There’s going to be a lot of rough patches, but what Martin said is exactly what he should be doing, and the effort and evidence has been there on the court for everyone to see so far this year.
Now we just need PW to ease up on his minutes a little; if Kevin’s going to play as hard as he has, he needs slightly fewer minutes.

Up to this point, Rose is pretty accurate
“I think that he’s definitely a guy who has established himself as a guy who can score the basketball in the league on a consistent basis. I don’t think that he’s a franchise-caliber player … or – based on the guys he’s going to go against on a nightly basis on the perimeter – an All-Star-caliber player. But he is a guy who’s going to be able to give some guys headaches because he can score the ball.”
ESPN analyst and former player Jalen Rose
It’s up to Kevin to change this widely-held perception with continued action, not words. So far, so good.

"all-star" can be overrated
There are alot of players who make the all-star team simply because they are good players playing on one of the best teams that season. That is why you have so many one & two time all-stars. David West is a good player but far from elite also Rip Hamilton. Probobly even our own Brad Miller & Peja. There are also better players who get snubbed every year. Unles Martin scores 30 per this season he probobly won’t be an all-star until this team starts winning games.

For example
Is Mo Williams > Kevin Martin? Or would Kevin Martin be an all-star playing alongside LeBron?

No
Because LeBron makes everybody better, and Kevin Martin being an All-Star in his own right would shatter that myth so many love to propogate.

Much ado about nothing
If you read the whole thing, in context, you will see that Rose isn’t really saying anything out of line. Nor is Martin’s response anything to get excited about. I think both statements are accurate.
The most surprising thing here is that Jalen Rose said something that made sense. I guess it was bound to happen eventually.

I never did understand the slamming of Kev for his D
Martin has improved on D every year except last year, when he had the ankle issue. He has some skills that will allow him to do well defensively, including his length and quickness for steals. Kmart has done nothing but improve every year, and he’s a model citizen and teammate. Why do people hate Kev? I will never understand. BTW, any news on Tyreke’s ankle? He doesn’t seem healthy yet.
by amonk81 on Nov 4, 2009 11:52 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
The best thing
Under the “I don’t care what Jalen Rose thinks” veneer, Martin has realized that he has to step up and can’t just be a one-dimensional player anymore. He’s no longer in denial. And that bodes well for both his and the Kings future.

Strongly disagree
Martin has improved on D every year except last year, when he had the ankle issue.
I think even Kevin’s most diehard supporters would have trouble swallowing this whole.
I would agree the ankle didn’t help matters.

Perhaps he didn't improve a ton every year, but....
Kev was never as bad a defender as people say. He was talked about as a possible good defender when he was young. It’s not like he’s Bibby and can’t defend at all. I guess that was my point.

Ankle
I think his ankle really limited his defensive game last year. He is much more active on D now.

Agreed
I think I was most impressed by that charge he drew on Chris Paul in the NO game. Last year that’s an uncontested bucket.

Just when Martin is looking to make that leap, he is questionable with a bruised hand. All-stars and leaders don’t sit out with a bruise on their non-shooting hand…we’ll see if he turned a corner or if he is the same Kevin Martin-made of glass.
