More of the same...

would be a displaced fracture and 6 weeks on IR.

As long as he play and wear protective brace to prevent further injury, I think doctors will clear him to play.

It looked like his back was bugging him last night more than his wrist.

Yes

I saw the back things as well. That was also going on the game before last night. I think he took a hard foul that game. Probably a elbow to the ribs.

Agreed about playing with a brace

It would be badass if he played with a club cast on his hand, Patrick Willis style.

Yup

I, too, have had a hairline fracture in my wrist. Twice. I was casted/wrapped for about 4 weeks each time. But I was in high school and going through growth spurts, so it probably would take slightly less time for Kevin.

As Zach mentions at Cowbell Kingdom, these suck. Unlike Zach, mine did results in long-term issues.

Really, I don’t see how you can seriously ask for an Iverson trade. That’s just stupid – you’re smarter than that Otis. I mean, honestly, how can you even think about trading for Iverson, when Zach Randolph is sitting on that roster? Dude is a BEAST. He attacks the ball like it’s a donut hole. Dives to the court like it’s a buffet table looking for loose bagels. And you know we’re thin in the frontcourt.

Although that means Sergio is now our back up point guard. I just get a kick out of all these people who were so glad Desmond Mason was let go because he couldn’t make a shot if his life depended on it. Um, check his shooting % against Evans this season. There's a learning curve

The Kings are asking Evans to do a lot. The fact that he isn’t succeeding tells me more about how difficult it is to adjust to the NBA when you’re in Evans position.

The fact that Chris Paul had no learning curve I think somewhat distorts this. Chris Paul is the penultimate exception to the rule.

My only request being he limit his shots to around 12-15 per game. Last game he shot 21 times. That’s too many in my opinion.

Okay so i'm a medical student and from what i know

he won’t be coming back earlier either. The bone he fractured has a high probability of potentially losing blood supply (if anyone’s interested, the main complication is avascular necrosis of the scaphoid bone) and must heal completely. Mike bibby had a hairline fracture when he was here of his 5th metatarsal bone in his foot and he came back a little early because that bone isn’t at the same risk as this one. Just my 2 cents. Hopefully we can put Tyreke off the ball and start Beno.

well

according to Rotoworld … Petrie said he might try and play through it

The Sacramento Bee updated a report claiming that Kevin Martin would miss six to eight weeks with a broken wrist, adding that Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie has indicated that Martin may try to play through the injury.
Kev-Mart owners get a glimmer of hope, as the earlier reports quoted Petrie as saying he would definitely be out. This follows a sequence of events that have seen former starter Desmond Mason released, Andres Nocioni arrested for DUI, and Francisco Garcia missing the first half of the season with a wrist injury. This should help Tyreke Evans and even Sergio Rodriguez, but the big winner here should be Beno Udrih, as Evans can play SG. Nov. 5 – 8:25 pm et

Wow

Looks like Omri moves into the starting SG spot. Beno backs up both Evans and Omri. Evans will be playing 40 minutes a night now with Omri playing around 30 and Beno as 35 as well.

Evans will have to run the show now. It’s him team. Can he grow up quick and learn to deliver offense and get the players involved. PW needs to put the ball in his hands and let him create. Beno can be a SG on offense and guard the opponents PG.

I think it will get worse for Tyreke

in terms of what shots he will get. Teams will make it even worse on him as he shows any sign of success.

In some ways playing with Beno will help him because Beno handles the ball better than K-Mart does. On the other hand, Beno will not even take even a fraction of the attention that K-Mart has at the moment.

No good way to handle your best player being out. Hopefully he comes back 100%.

Have you ever been in Seattle for an extended period of time?

I’ve walked down the street, and not gotten a single drop on me (or no more than I should anyway) because the drizzle is so light. It’s mist at best 50% of the time.

Quite honestly, that’s what I like about Seattle in the wintertime. If it wasn’t for that drizzle, it would not be as warm here in the wintertime. And, I do not want to live in 25 degree weather all winter long.

Here is the difference between the 206 & the 916. The ground is colder up here, and because of that when the Sun heats up the pavement it takes more energy to do that. But, at the same time, when it drizzles during the wintertime it actually creates more heat because of the humidity. A lot of people here don’t notice it (whether they know it or not is a moot point as far as I’m concerned), or maybe I don’t know enough people, but I think plenty of people will tell you that too.

In sacramento, when it’s cloudy the weather becomes colder in the wintertime. In Seattle when it’s clear sky’s, the weather gets colder. Go figure.

It's not the weather that bugs me

Sacramento is just too small a city for my liking. I like a more urban environment, and there is no way in hell I’m going to live in Sacramento again. Unless I get a job that is a clear upgrade from what I’m currently doing, or something like that.

Weather wise, Seattle & Sac are about the same for different reasons.

Martin might play through it!!!!

Check it out-

Perfect chance for Martin to shed the soft label…playing with a broken wrist will increase his toughness and leadership of this team. Almost everyone would look at him differently. I hope he plays through it and continues to score 30 points per game….he would have to be an all-star then.

I don't blame Kevin for wanting to fix something

I don’t blame Kevin for wanting to play. All I want here is that Kevin’s long term health can be secured. I know he’s gotten hurt a lot, but I wonder if any of this is that big of a deal. Kobe Bryant has sustained injuries throughout his career and he’s turned out okay.

All I know right now is this

No matter what Speed does here, some people will hate him for it. It’s not exactly the quote from the Dark Knight I was looking for, but it will work:

James Gordon Jr.: Why’s he running, Dad?
Lt. James Gordon: Because we have to chase him.
James Gordon Jr.: He didn’t do anything wrong.
Lt. James Gordon: Because he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we’ll hunt him because he can take it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

Regardless of what Kevin does, there will be a certain segment that he is a pussy ass bitch because he couldn’t play with a simple hairline fracture. As if it’s that simple, but there are people who don’t care.

And there will be people who will criticize him for playing if his injury becomes aggravated.

And there will be people who will devastated. My hope is that the majority of fans lay in this particular category. (I know that’s where I will be.)

No easy answers, and no simple solutions. Such as life.

If so, the Kings wouldn't be discussing the option of Martin playing

I think if there is a realistic chance of making it worse, the Kings would already announce he won’t play. Don’t let Martin get a chance to decide-They have invested alot of money into K-Mart and his impact this year would not be worth wasting the rest of the $$$ in his contract.

I believe the chance of making it worse is really low since they are considering to allow Martin to play through it

Except for the fact that the team is having trouble drawing fans

Really this season doesnt matter-we are not making the playoffs. If Martin somehow makes it worse, he can have surgery and recover. From what I have read on this injury, the recovery from the surgery isnt long-term and probably will not have any long-term effects from the injury. The positive side of team morale, respect from opponents and teammates will be immense. He has already played a game with the injury-if he thought he couldnt do it, there wouldnt be rumors of him possibly playing with it. I think the positive of playing outweight the negative of making it worse-its not even close to playing with a broken foot like McHale did for the Celtics.

by Bellringer21 on Nov 5, 2009 7:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

So you'd rather have Kevin for 20 games this season

than having him for 60 just because that would somehow prove he’s tough and can play through injury? How about building chemistry on the court and learning the new system on the court with all the young kids? Isn’t that important, too?

You definitely have the right to feel like it’s better to show you’re tough, I just don’t think that’s the way to go about it., especially when the only thing you can accomplish are things that don’t really show in the W-L in the future.

If he can play, I’m all for it. If he plays JUST because he wants to show he’s tough, then I don’t agree withthe decision as much as it hurts not having him on the court.

The future begins now...

by eduardo_m7 on Nov 5, 2009 7:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If he plays

It wont be because he wants to show people he’s tough. He’ll play because he wants this team to win basketball games.

I feel that he should play if the risk of making it worse is minor and he can play through pain. Some players can’t play through pain (Baron Davis anyone?)

I have already stated that I don’t blame him if he doesn’t play. Its a broken wrist-not a bruised tailbone. If anyone gives him junk for missing time with a broken wrist they are out of line.

Playoffs?

I think it’s a little early to be writing this team off. They are starting to put some things together.

Last year was so bleak, and now we are bitching because the team could not beat the Hawks. Last year they would have lost that game by 20-30 points. They are competing, playing hard, and we should respect that.

Bee article is updated
Petrie said Martin could miss at least six weeks if he had a cast placed on the wrist or underwent surgery and had screws inserted. Petrie said another option is Martin could play through the injury and hope it doesn’t get worse.

Kevin Martin said Thursday that he will sleep on a decision whether or not to have surgery on his broken left wrist, or simply put it in a cast, or to try to play through it.

Putting a cast on it would cost him anywhere from six to eight weeks, while surgery is a more certain bet to cost eight weeks. He played through the pain on Wednesday, and it appears the doctors are letting him call the shots, which is a good sign for his owners. That is, if there can be any good news with this situation.

I feel if the doctors are letting him make the decision, the probability to do more damage is very minimal….and I hope he proves how tough he is and plays through it

by Bellringer21 on Nov 5, 2009 7:49 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

i have experience with this injury and if the bone doesn’t heal correctly, part of the bone coulddie and the wrist will never be right again. kevin should definitely NOT play through this injury. he should DEFINITELY make sure the injury heals correctly. if this bone doesn’t heal correctly, it could cause permanent damage and would definitely be carreer threatening if it were his shooting hand.

If this was the case.....

why doesnt the team/doctor step in and say playing isnt an option? Most teams would do this if the injury could become worse. I believe the doctor and team feel the possibility of this developing into a worse injury are very very low and are going to allow Kevin the decision to play if he can handle the pain.

by Bellringer21 on Nov 5, 2009 8:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I am sure the doctors will strongly discourage playing

In the end, I will be shocked if Kevin plays through this injury. If he has truly fractured his navicular bone, no hand/wrist orthopedic surgeon would recommend playing until it has completely healed.

by napakingsfan on Nov 5, 2009 8:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I also feel this could help him prove that he isnt soft….and nobody wants to be called soft. If there isnt a chance to do permanent damage, he can play though it to get rid of the soft label. That would be motiviating to the team, and he would earn alot of respect around the league.

Obviously this injury didnt affect his performance level-he scored 29 points on 11-22 shooting yesterday

I agree completely

I have often questioned several of the Kings toughness and willingness to play through injury, but this is not an injury to try and play through. The potential for further damage is too great.

by napakingsfan on Nov 5, 2009 8:38 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Are these hairline fractures all the same

or are there different degrees of damage??

You seem to know about the injury, that’s why I ask

by eduardo_m7 on Nov 5, 2009 8:44 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunately not

Of all of the wrist bones, the navicular is one of the most important and is also the bone most prone to not healing correctly (one of the fragments dying).

by napakingsfan on Nov 5, 2009 8:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It all depends on the probablity of long-term damage

I sincerely doubt that the doctors would allow Martin to make this decision if there is a reasonable chance this could cause permanent damage. Many times you hear of a broken wrist and the player is out a period of time and thats it….not that the player is given a choice to play through it.

by Bellringer21 on Nov 5, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The true risk

is if the pieces become displaced. If he were to fall on the wrist with his whole body weight and the fragments were to become displaced, the risk of one of the pieces dying would be greatly increased.

figured that out. Just because I am a little slow figuring this out, don’t disregard my medical knowledge.

Actually your point is why I'm 99% leaning towards Kevin getting rest and/or surgery for this

rather than trying to play to “prove” he’s tough.

by pookeyguru on Nov 5, 2009 8:57 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I hope

Kevin doesn’t feel pressure to prove that he is tough. I know he caught some flak for missing so many games last year with the ankle injury. I never understood that, but I never heard the true extent of that injury. I assume the injury was more serious than they initially realized or than they let on to the public.

by napakingsfan on Nov 5, 2009 9:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It was both

Initially they didn’t think it was that bad and let him play on it. By the time they realized it had gotten worse they covered it up for a little while. Another week or so Amick dug out the truth and they were stuck publicly.

I have a lot of respect for Kevin. He’s not a pussy or a guy who doesn’t try to be out there every time he can. He plays through nagging injuries (hello! he played through this last night vs Atlanta remember?) whenever he can, and did so last season on that ankle.

There are always people who love to lob excuses rather than figure out reasonable reason’s. Nothing you can do about those folks except that hope reason eventually wears them down and their brain develops as it should have been originally.

There was a point in Kings history

when Bobby Jackson’s toughness was questioned (Grant Napear, hello!). When it comes to player injuries, if ignorance is bliss, we Kings fans are Eden.

I think its the off-center nature of the title and author on stories and fan posts. Just bugs me.

Look on the bright side, fellas.

The Kings were not going to win many games this year anyway. This will only help the development of Evans (who really needs to learn what he can and can’t do and not force shots down the stretch) and Casspi, both of whom will get big minutes. They still may have to sign another athletic player though.

This is going to force our team to become a grind-it-out defensive minded ball club.
It ain’t gonna be pretty, but it will be a character builder.

I talked to Harry Shearer today, the voice of most of The Simpsons characters, who is a huge Hornets fan, and he complimented the old Kings team … kind of clowned the Maloofs about Vegas. Said he had friends in Sacto and seemed to generally like the fans.

by VirginiaBlue on Nov 5, 2009 10:15 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Still depressed

If Martin is out and Tyreke becomes as good as Kevin and Casspi becomes as steady as Cisco, which is our best case Scenario, we are back to the same level as last years team.
Crap.
A 17 win team can’t afford to lose players 1 and 6.
We need an idiotic team to make a Gasol type trade in our favor…(Bosh?)

by ElRonToro on Nov 5, 2009 10:48 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I have a curiosity of seeing Evans, Casspi at the wings and Thompson at the post.

Three observations

Their scoring potential will surprise people.
Casspi doesn’t have guard skill and isn’t a guard.
I think Tre Simmons at Hapoel Jerusalem could be a good fit for a minimum contract.

by Kevin.S on Nov 5, 2009 11:06 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

This may have been mentioned before

I didn’t want to read all of the threads. Not enough time today =)

If Beno starts in Kevin’s absence, then Evans can still play the point at times based on Beno’s ability to shoot. From what I’ve seen this season, they’ve played Evans off the ball several times and have had mixed results while playing with Martin.

I’m likening this to a Doug Christie/Mike Bibby backcourt where Christie did a lot of the ball handling. I know that Beno is no Bibby, but right now we’re not competing for a championship. We’re building a foundation built which is the most important thing a rebuilding team needs. I’m not excited about Kmart being out, but I don’t think our season is over either.

I’m going to be patiently optimistic for once…
