Amick: Kevin Martin Forced Out of Action

The Bee's Sam Amick has the scoop:

It remains unclear whether he will have surgery or simply put the wrist in the cast, but Martin won't be returning to the floor anytime soon. He met with a local hand specialist this morning and had the MRIs examined and all involved said he had to allow the hand to heal.

It looks like the option of playing with a fractured wrist should never have been on the table. Martin still must decide whether to cast it for several weeks, or to undergo surgery.

UPDATE: It's surgery. Monday.

I agree with the spirit of this

but the little bit that I was listening to Grant and Mike yesterday, Grant was actually saying “let’s wait and see what the doctors say”. But he’s still a douche.

It looks like the option of playing with a fractured wrist should never have been on the table.

Absolutely it shouldn’t have been. It makes no sense to hurt yourself for no reason. Especially when you hurt yourself by playing in the game itself. (Not like you hurt yourself fighting your college roommate or moped or anything.)

Martin still must decide whether to cast it for several weeks, or to undergo surgery.
I think this was always the question, and it’s a good thing there will be some time to decide this question. Hopefully for everyone involved the right decision is made.

Can anyone tell me why he would just get a cast and not do the surgery?

I suppose the surgery comes with the potential for minor nerve damage in the hand/arm, but I’d imagine this is rather minimal (especially considering the caliber of the experts that would surely be working on him). Recovery times being roughly equal, doesn’t the surgery come with more of a guarantee that the bone would heal properly?

I'm not a doctor (though I play one at StR)

Perhaps it’s because a hairline fracture of this type can heal by itself, without need for pins or screws. If this is possible, why risk surgery, infection, etc.?

It should be noted that I am an idiot, and that this is pure conjecture on my part.

Based on where the fracture is

there might be a possiblility that it might not heal properly with just a cast. Where pinning is probably a sure thing. If it were to heal improperly, it might have to be reset and have surgury anyways.

If this was an HMO they’d probably go the cheapest way, but with a $10M player, I’d go with the surgury. But, I’m not a doctor either, but I used to play one with my girlfriend.

A small wrist facture probably would heal quite well with just a cast

I’ve fractured both wrists more than once. However, there can still be issues, especially with someone who is an athlete. The difference between the surgery and just a cast is pretty big though. The cast prevents most wrist movement. The screws hold the fractured bone in place so it heals properly; essentially it’s like putting a cast directly on the fracture itself, stopping any movement at all. It’s a more precise way to heal and makes sense if the recovery time is the same.

Change of subject here

Does anyone think that if Martin is out, the Kings will move Tyreke to SG?

by HighTops on Nov 6, 2009 1:39 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

seems ironic

to do that given Tyreke’s worst NBA skill is shooting. I think the new starting backcourt is Tyreke and Beno, and the chips will fall where they may with who they call what for positions.

Tyreke will always guard the best opposing guard, either point or shooting, Beno may bring the ball up the court.

I'll anwer here rather then at your site, to maintain continuity

Quite often you hear the Kings FO say that the 4 & 5 are interchangeable on the Kings. So, I’ll call the 1 & 2 interchangeable also. You can label Tyreke & Beno, 1 & 2 or 2 &1, either way their going to play their game. When they have the ball, Beno’s going to drive & pop or Tyreke is going to drive and finish, based on what plays PW calls.

I thinks you go with the best starting 5 you can. Beno, Tyreke, Noc, JT & Hawes. When Beno comes out you can move Evans back to PG & bring in Udoka or Omri at the 2. If Beno & Tyreke both need to sit, Sergio plays the 1 with Udoka or Omri at the 2. If Omri has to play a lot of minutes at the 2, Greene is going to have to see some minutes at the 3.

As far as you artilcle Pook, I too would like to see Greene get more PT. I like your suggestion of Hawes, JT, Greene, Omri, & Tyreke, just to see the youth on the floor together. Not only is it our biggest and most athletic lineup, it is the players we need to develop together and be our future. And, even tho, there will be a lot of people that think Greene isn’t ready, I think this is the lineup where he will be most comfortable and perform the best.

So, although, it wouldn’t be my starting lineup, I’d like to see it, soon.

also

I think ccrdc was making fun of you, because during one of the more…. “livelier” back and forths, there was lots of fun to be had with his website, so I think he’s returning the favor. Viewed in that light, it’s more a funny, well-place insult than simple haughtiness.

Pretty devious idea; wish I had thought of that!

No insult meant on the site, Pookey – hope it goes well. I just don’t want to hop around that much.
