Looking Ahead

It might be a bit premature for this, but when K-Mart comes back I seems like our line up will have to look like this:

PG- Wabeno Udrih

SG- Martin

SF- Tyreke "the freak" Evans

PF- JT

C- Hawes

I like Hawes, but I think he is developing too slow, so I think he should be the first one to the bench with Casspi being the first to come in.   I also think Nocioni, udoka, and green should split the rest of the minutes, beacuse they have been giving the most consistent energy thus far.  I have already givin up an May.  I do realize that this would be a lot of wings coming off the bench (althought Noc and Greene could be PF, and Udoka could be a SG).  Perhaps a trade of some of our wings for an energetic early Bobby Jackson type would be in order, not sure who though.

I also can't believe what I'm seeing in Udrih. He's been way more of a suprise than Evans or Casspi.  Last year  I took the coaching staff view that he was underperforming, when it seems in fact that the coaching staff was underperfoming with him.  Yeah... if he was an all-star he could have looked good last year with a below average coaching staff, but thats not Udrih.  He is a smart versitile point guard when utilized correctly.  I just hope he doesn't let us down.

Casspi is the Bobby Jackson guy you are looking for.

And once Garcia comes back he is another energy guy.

I like the idea of Beno, Martin and Evans in a starting line-up with Thompson and Hawes but the team needs it’s full arsenal to make it work. I really think that Garcia is the key to this working because he can run the 1,2, or 3 which should reduce the amount of time Sergio Rodriguez has to play. I don’t hate Rodriguez but he just can’t shoot or play defense well enough yet to play serious minutes in the NBA.

The one disadvantage to this plan is that Evans is an amazing match-up problem both offensively and defensively against 1’s and 2’s but not so much against 3’s. I love the idea of Martin guarding Fischer and Evans guarding Kobe but if you add Beno to this, who guards Artest, or Rashard Lewis, Hedo, Durant, Marion, Wallace, Pierce…..? Now, I’m saying that Noc/Casspi/Greene/Garcia can stymie these guys either but they certainly have the size to do it.

No law when it comes to me.
I let you type critics write and I just keep it hood.
That will never change.

Exactly.

T-Rek needs to play guard to force the nightly mismatch.

Interesting quote by PW today saying T-Rek is already one of the best defenders in the NBA. No, not just on our team, the entire league! I heard this and thought, ‘wow’, this is unheard of for a rookie PG. PW also added T-Rek defends the ‘1’ ‘2’ and ‘3’ position better than any player on their roster. So basically T-Rek guards small forwards better than Noccioni or Omri. Again, strong statement.

I am looking for T-Rek to reke havoc in the passing lanes more like he has last two games. We didn’t see that too much early on. I think he will take more calculated gambles as he learns player tendencies. Two steals a game and one or more break away dunks per game seems about right.

I actually like the idea of Evans guarding the 3

I agree the lakers and other teams would give us problems with defending kobe and artest but I think that has to do more with K-Mart. I think Evans would do well guarding all those other guys you mentioned including Artest. Yeah he’s only 6’6’ but there are hes got a 7’ wingspan, athleticism, and some freak strength.

The thing is that if Beno keeps up this Payton Manning effect on our offense, we can’t keep him on the bench for long, obviously Martin is going to get all of his usual minutes when healthy, so for me I would rather keep Evans on the court by challenging him to guard the three.

Also even though I also like his match up potential against 1’s ad 2’s, usually teams only have one or maybe two good perimeter defenders which will leave either K-Mart, Evans, or Udrih to do some damage. Paul Westphal has some good stuff on offense so we should exploit it with our best offensive weapons.

Evans should dish out the punishment

…not take it.

Small forwards post up, play on the block, run through baseline screens. I don’t want T-Rek exerting all that energy. Let him play defense away from the bigs on top of the key. His best strength as a defender is keeping penetrating guards out of the lane, which can really stifle an opponents offensive attack. If he is stuck defending a ‘3’, his defensive skills are neutralized.

I agree

I agree our defense would suffer

but who would you sit the majority of the time beno, tyreke, of martin. I assume you would say beno, but I think then our offense would really suffer. Tyreke is not controlling the offense like beno, and he is playing realy well not in the primary role of PG.

All last year all everyone talked about was how bad our backcourt defense was.

Now, you want to put Tyreke at the 3 and put the same backcourt back on the court? Take Tyreke who can dominate most guards, and make him guard bigger SF’s? Your taking our mismatch advantage and giving the advantage to the other team.

The 3 guard offense works against smaller run & gun teams, but not the majority of teams in the league. Tyreke needs to shut down the best guard on the other team. This helps Martin & Beno & overcomes their defensive defeciences. If their is a SF that is going to hurt us offensively, then you throw 4 SF’s at him and make him beat us at the FT line. Not only will it disrupt their offense, it will take most of their team out of the game.

Your point is exactly why PW won't take that approach

It’s not as if he wouldn’t use a 3 G offense some. It’s that it won’t be a matchup advantage MOST nights in the NBA.

But, most coaches won’t say they won’t do anything because at some point they’ll have to see how a lineup works anyway.

I'm sorry but

Reke isn’t a 3…if he was 6-8 or 6-9 with the same body he has then He’d be LeBron, but no, he can’t guard Carmelo, LeBron, Odom, Joe Johnson, PP, Funny….all those guys play on playoff teams….Beno is off the bench, Reke at the point unless we can get a 15/10 SF for K-Speed, God i love the guy, but the more i watch Reke, the more i love him

BENO and T-Rek should share the 1and2. Martin should come off the bench

the defense would get confused with a 2 point guard system.
but once they get the handle on.
Martin comes off the bench for Beno.
now we have the Evan-Martin punch power everyone was talking about..
i bet everyones thinking now, we’ve seen them play together. and evans only avg’d 10….it’s not going to work!

but wait…did evans have that same confidence in the first 4 games. then in the past 3. NO.

PICTURE THIS!

Evans, at point guard. goes for a drive. Makes it.
let’s say he did that twice in a row already.

Defense makes adjustments, and they call for a double team everytime he drives the lane.

oops, SOMEONE’S OPEN.

now we got two bigs who can shoot the mid range jumper very well.

we got Martin who could shoot anywhere.

Casspi, Noce, or Greene who can shoot the long ball proficiently.

now we’ve got a problem.

Agreed - 100%. Or Beno coming off the bench in place of Kevin or Reke would work in a different way.

If Beno comes in and replaces Kevin we’ll just get the awesome chemistry that helped us win these last 3 games. Beno adds an extra dimension and overall flow to the offense that would certainly throw opposing defenses into a frenzy. Oh well…we have 8 weeks to think about it.

Coach W and his staff have 2 months to figure this out along with the extra awesome puzzle piece called Fracisco Garcia. We actually look loaded in every facet of the game with an exception of a 4 or a 5 that can make their own shot in the paint.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.
