With or without Oden, Portland is a pretty damn good team.
This is in no way an attempt to replace TZ's excellent game Previews. I've been posting some of my thoughts in those excellent Previews, but my comments seem to be getting longer & longer, and seemed inappropriate for comments. So, here are my thoughts about the Portland game.
With a record of 14-11, they are better at home (8-4), but they’re only slightly worst than .500 on the road (6-7). Since Oden got hurt in the Hou game, which they won at home, they are 1-3 on the road. But, it took MIL 2 OT’s to beat them, or else they would have been .500 on the road without Oden.
If there is any weakness in their record, it might be whom they have beaten. I’m not one to devaluate any win in the NBA, but here’s the facts for your examination. The Trailblazers only have 4 wins against upper echelon teams. They lost to ATL twice, Cle, Den, Mia, Utah, went 2-1 against Hou, and beat SA & OKC. That’s 4-7 against other playoff teams.
Who did they beat to get to 14 wins? Besides the 4 already mentioned, POR beat MIN 3 times, split with MEM, beat NJN, IND, NOH, CHA, DET, & CHI. That’s 10 wins against sub .500 teams. Plus they lost to NYN, GSW, MEM and MIL
So they have a 36% winning percentage against playoff caliber teams. And, a 71% winning percentage against sub .500 percentage teams. Unfortunately, the Kings fall into the latter category. So, winning 67% of their home games and 71% of their games against teams comparable to the Kings, it wouldn’t seem that we are favored to get our 2nd road victory.
But, don’t give up hope. Players win ball games not statistics. So, lets look at the players. As I mentioned earlier, Portland lost Oden 5 games ago. With Oden they were 12-8 or a .600 winning percentage. Without Oden they are 2-3, or .400 winning percentage. But, if they could have pulled out the double OT game at MIL they would have still been .600.
Before Oden’s injury the team shot 45% FG%, 35% 3P%, 11 ORB, 42 TRB, & 96 ppg
Since Oden’s injury the team shot 43% FG%, 34% 3P%, 11 ORB, 42 TRB, & 96 ppg
What’s happened is that Przybilla has stepped up and rebounded exceptionally well. Also, Roy, Aldridge, & Miller have picked up their scoring. Roy is taking almost 25 FGA’s per game, and Aldridge & Miller have upped their attempts to 15 per game. It looks like Portland might be able to continue without Oden, without skipping a beat.
It comes down to the match ups. Spencer never matched up well against Oden, but I believe he should be able to hold his own against Przybilla on the boards, as should JT against Aldridge. And, Beno is shooting as well as Blake did against us last year. It’s really going to come down to one thing. How do we defend Roy & Aldridge?
The big question is ‘Will PW start Donte at the 2?’ Most of the 2’s Donte’s had to defend weren’t of the caliber of Brandon Roy. There’s no way Donte is quick enough to stay in front of Roy & if he plays off him Roy is good enough to shot over him. Of course the match up most people want is Tyreke on Roy. The only problem is that Roy has 3 years of experience over Tyreke, and that might be enough to win the battle. And, I’m not sure that Beno can win the battle at PG against Blake, Miller & Bayless. My biggest hope is that Sergio punishes Portland for giving up on him, but my biggest fear is that he will try too hard and fail miserably.
Aldridge is another problem. Aldridge does most of his offensive damage away from the basket, shooting jumpers on 64% of his shots. But when he does score inside he has an eFG% of 61%. My gut tells me that JT isn’t the one to defend Aldridge away from the basket. I just see foul trouble written all over this match up.
If PW starts Donte and the 2, and Donte can hold Roy to 25 pts or less, then we have a chance. But, my best guess is that Roy kills us, and goes off for 40. Plus I think we’re going to need Donte to help at the 4. Unlike in the Minny game where Brockman & Thomas could defend in the paint, they won’t be much help defending away from the basket.
I’d start Beno, Tyreke (sg), Noc, Donte, & JT. If Tyreke gets into foul trouble I’d move him back to PG, and use a rotation of Omri & Udoka to defend Roy. If we could compete on the boards with that line up, I’d stay with a 3 big rotation of JT, Donte & Spencer as much as I could.
But, PW likes to reward players for past performances and effort, so I see the same line up as last game returning, Tyreke, Donte, Noc, JT & Spencer. I think we’ll keep it close, but foul trouble, and big time scoring from Roy and Aldridge will win the game for POR.
Plus the Blazer’s bench may be better than ours.
I see it going 98-90 Blazers with the Blazers winning the rebound battle. But, if somehow Tyreke can offset or neutralize Roy, the winning streak continues.
GO KINGS.

I really like the idea of Donte guarding Aldridge.
That would neutralize the typical advantage the he has over other big men, his speed. Donte is about as fast as you could ever expect a 7 footer to be, so that would be an excellent matchup.

I thought Aldridge
was ready for stardom, but his play has leveled off. He is a legitimate low post threat, and guy who can shoot from baseline, but he is only averaging 16.2 points and 7.8 rebs on 49%, versus JT points of 14.9 pts, 9.1 rebs on 50% shooting. Aldirdge is scoring 1.3 points more than JT, rebounding less. For $80 million, I think the Blazers thought they were getting a 20/10 guy.
I like the idea of Donte on Aldridge too, and doubling off their weakest perimeter player, likely using Tyreke off of Blake.
As far as Brandon Roy, I like Tyreke on Roy. It is possible PW will turn to Udoka, as he did when we played Dwayne Wade. Roy is a guy who really likes to get into the lane. I think Tyreke is best match to keep him out.
Nate McMillan busted his achilles and hasn’t been with team on road trip. Getting over loss of Oden can either be positive or negative. Players either rally in his absence or struggle for new identity without him. Hard to say how team will react. The fans have to be deflated, so I think relatively subdued atmosphere there will make it easier to get a road win.
I am waiting for Donte Greene to explode again. Or for Spencer Hawes to have a breakout game. I think for us to break through on the road, someone in addition to Tyreke needs to step up big.
Either way, the talent level of the two teams is about even, so this game is a toss up and will come down to superior execution, likely in the 4th quarter.
Donté on Aldridge shouldnt me too bad
I think they could play small and switch Andres to the 4 as well; his harassing style of defense could help a lot on Lamarcus.
Udoka should do ok on Roy. I don’t think we switch Tyreke on Brandon unless absolutely necessary.
On the other in, Andre Miller plays no D, and the Pointgerberus will play great.
Przbylla is a beast, and it is gonna be a good game for him. Spencer and JT need to hit some outside shots against him.

It might be worth pointing out a couple of things about Aldridge
First thing. He’s a 55 million dollar man, secondly he’s averaging 21.5 points, 9 boards and 2+ assists since Oden went down; those two were having a hard time coexisting in the front court.

I disagree on one thing
In both teams current state, our bench is superior by a fair degree and I think it will be decided there assuming; the starters play reasonably well with at least one starter having an excellent game.
I think there’s still some residual hangover from last years squad expectation-wise.

I think most Portland fans would agree about the bench
Well, our bench is superior — but they are all recovering from surgery. We’re very thin right now.
If our starters can’t outplay yours, you will probably win.

couple of other factors: players always play better against the team that just traded them. It is set in stone
Look for Sergio to provide another impressive spark.
LMA has shown tb be more solid starter than All-Star, he uses his height to advantage well – I don’t like Kenny Thomas or Jon Brockman much on him – I like SHawes. Put the Bruise Bros (Thomas and Mancakes) on Pryzbilla.
The Kings will have trouble with Roy – who doesn’t – but likewise, with Oden out, the lane will be more open for ’Reke and he is the Kings RoY.
My match up to watch up: Casspi v. Outlaw. Nice fiesty fight there.
I should wait for TZ but my bold prediction: Nate McMillan and Sergio Rodrguez will not hug
Outlaw is out injured
Did you mean Webster?

not impressed with either of those guys
but a bit more experienced

No one knows which Portland team will turn up
Will it be the one that lost at home to Memphis and at NY, or the one that battled the Cavs to the last minute in Cleveland?
Portland is in disarray, the rotations are in flux, we still don’t know who is going to start next game at PG, and we lead the league in taking (but certainly not in making) desperation shots at the end of the shot clock.
We’re staying competitive through sheer talent from Roy and Aldridge, hard work from Przybilla, and the occasionally burst from someone else. But we’re not looking good, and it isn’t going to shock at least some Portland fans if the Kings win this one. Even with the injuries, we should have no trouble with the Kings at this stage in your rebuilding, at least in Portland, but all is not well in Blazerland right now.

Adjusted for 48mins. Przybilla leads all Western Conference Centers
Between foul trouble & poor technic, JT & Spencer might not be able to outrebound Przybilla together. Our 2 best SG’s our injured, and we’re going to have to play SF’s at the 2 to defend Roy.
JT hasn’t learned to move his feet on defense, and doesn’t defend well away from the basket.
We’re looking for our 2nd road victory of the season. We score 10ppg less on the road than at home. We foul too much & the Blazers 3 top scorers are 80+% FT shooters.
We probably have an advantage at PG with Tyreke & Beno, and at SF with Noc (if he’s out of his shooting slump) & Omri. But, the other 3 positions definitely favor the Blazers. We turn the ball over too much & if we can’t win the rebound battle to balance the possessions, we usually don’t win. We battle back the entire game, but in the 4th in close games we don’t have a closer like Roy.
Even though your having to go with a short rotation due to injuries, your at home and coming off of 2 days rest. Aldridge & Roy are horrible match ups for us. And, I’ll be very surprised is you don’t manage to defend the home court.

Happen to watch us lose to the Knicks last week?
It might change your perspective.
Rumor is Blake is going to be benched for the first time in over two years tonight. He’s had a pathetic run lately. His last five games he’s had 5 ppg, 4.4 apg in 37.5 mpg, shooting 10-35 and 4-20 on 3s.
We don’t know how the offense will run with Miller starting. It’s been good at times, bad at others.
Webster went for 3 3s and 13 in the first quarter against Cleveland, and didn’t score again. He’s had some horrible games, and our backup SF is Brandon Roy.
Expect us to lose? No, I don’t. But if we do, it won’t be any surprise. Right now, we’re capable of putting up a performance that would lose to anyone.

I thought speculation was Bayless starting
I may be wrong there as it would assume Webster also going to the bench and Brandon sliding to the 3. So, if Blake is benched for Miller, does this mean Bayless continues to play second fiddle to Blake?
"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
It doesn't matter who you play at PG, we win that battle hands down.
Defensively, the Blazers are light years ahead of the Kings. The KIngs are 22nd or worse in getting Blocked, giving up ORBs, Pts allowed, FG% allowed and 3P% allowed. While the Blazers are in the top 10 in every catagory except 3P% allowed, and they’re the 11th best at that.
You seem to be down on the team because their not top 5 in the West, while we’re just happy that we’re not on the bottom anymore. We’re only 1 full game ahead of 3rd, 4th & 5th worst team in the West, and if they catch up, we’ll be in the bottom 3 in the West again.
"If you don't have anything good to say, LIE" - Mom
It's not that we're not top 5
You didn’t see it last night, but on our recent road trip, I think a quarter of our shots went up in the last 5 seconds of the shot clock, and a lot of them were total prayers. Our offense has been horribly inconsistent, at times we’ll look brilliant, and at other times we’ll have four guys standing around doing nothing.
After all the injuries, if we play well we’ve got a shot at making the playoffs, that’s about as good as it is going to get. But we’ve never looked like a team all year, for more than about a quarter at a time.
And I’m not really down on them. I just don’t have much expectations right now, because we’re not in synch.

Portland shaking up the line-up again (PTB fan here)
Coach McMillian has finally caved to the pressure of the sentiment overflowing on Blazers Edge and apparently decided to go with a Miller/Bayless back-court. Steve Blake has lost all confidence on the offensive end of the court and no amount of cooing by Brandon Roy is going to justify Nate’s continuing to Start Blake. I think and hope this will translate into a noticeable improvement in energy and aggressiveness out of the gates. While Blake is a timid prancer who prefers the comfort of setting up behind the arc waiting for Brandon Roy to do something with the ball, Bayless is fearless about attacking the rims and has no qualms about showcasing his offensive game. Bayless is also a more physical defender then Blake and plays a much sticky perimeter defensive game then Blake, who works harder not to get beat off the dribble, which is another way of saying he pretty much lets opponent PG’s do what they want. The move to the second unit should help Blake as well. He wasn’t responding to the pressure of starting on a team decimated by injuries. The reduced burden of having to lead by example is now out of his hands. Maybe he can knock down a 3 or two tonight. That’s not asking much but is about all he would need to come through with.
The Bayless for Blake swap is what Trail Bedgers have been clamoring for weeks now, and intensified when Oden went down and the team’s playoff aspirations essentially got flushed down the terlet. Since neither Blake or Miller can be considered to be long term solutions to the Blazers PG dilemna, they may as well finally give Bayless the opportunity to showcase his drafted-to-high ability for future trades sake.
All things considered at this point, the best thing that could happen (and I pray it does) is that Sergio has a HUGE game against the Blazers and as a result Coach McMillian is finally deposed as the tyrannical despot of young talent he is.
"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
I'm hoping
that Sergio doesn’t try to do too much against his former team and start becoming careless.

I sincerely hope that Sergio throws up a stat line of 0 points 2 assists and 1 reb going 0-9 from the field 0-2 from the line and 7 turnovers. Maybe then all the whiny Blazer fans will shut up about McMillan “holding back” his development.
Blazersedge mods suck
So its just coincidence then huh?
Jarrett Jack, Sergio Rodriguez, Rex Bayless….. hmmmm…. the only guy who hasn’t been the teams main luggage handler since Nate took over has been Steve Blake-the only one without any real potential. Blazers fans may be whiny but know what they’re talking about when it comes to Nate’s power and control issues over developing PGs.
"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
What have Segio and Jarret Jack done since leaving Portland. JJ has done alright for himself but he really hasn’t improved that much from when he was with the Blazers. So Sergio had a few good games. Guess what? He had a few good games in Portland too. He is a turnover prone, poor-shooting, whiner. Jerryd Bayless will get his chance. I don’t necessarily agree with Nate’s substitution patterns or his starting lineup but it’s funny how many idiots on Blazersedge think that they could do a bettter job coaching a team in the NBA. Another thing that bothers me about the general whiny crowd in Portland is the fact that they are so quick to turn on their star players when they have a few bad games. I can’t believe how many morons out there actually think that the Blazers would be better off without Brandon Roy. Roy has been nothing but amazing for the Blazers yet fans want to throw him under the bus over a few bad games.
