Really impressed with Evans

The guy knows how to play team basketball. He didn’t show much of the perimeter game, but his body control and ability to finish is top tier.

I think once Beno cooled off the Kings had trouble scoring. Casspi gave great minutes, but was bit slow to guard Bayless in the 4th quarter. The Kings look much better this year and with Kevin Martin coming back, he’ll help the Kings get even better.

Get a solid rebounding and defensive center, I think the Kings are set. Przybilla made a huge difference for the Blazers.

Blame Spencer

28 minutes – 4 points and 2 rebounds. Got abused on defense. It’s positively Brad Miller-esque. I’m warming up the bus Spence. You better hold on to something if you don’t want to end up underneath it.

(It’s certainly not ENTIRELY Spencer’s fault, but his lack of production is inexcusable.)

by Carl on Dec 15, 2009 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

You mean the bad Brad, right?

When Miller first came to Sacramento he was damn good. Fought hard inside, nailed those shots from 16 feet out no problem, passed the ball like a champ.

Brad was fun to watch in those days!

tough loss

I really thought the Kings had that game for most of the game. Despite the loss, the Kings obviously have some very nice young talent to build a winner out of. Evans is going to be a great player and Udrih was quite impressive, especially in the first half.

but can I gripe about Spencer taking (and missing) those 20 foot j’s?

What happened to the guy with the array of moves and nice footwork? He’s settling for poor percentage shots when he should be working hard to get a better one, or dish it off and get positioned inside to get an easy shot or an offensive board.

Bayless hung Casspi out to dry

Strange matchup, but I guess you don’t expect Jerryd Bayless to be the guy that beats you in crunch time. With the Blazers playing a lot of three guard, it was really a spot for Sergio, but Westphal obviously had no confidence in him.

Bayless is too quick for Omri.

And you couldn’t exactly put Tyreke on him, he was guarding Roy (pretty well too).

by Mucho Moss on Dec 15, 2009 9:51 PM PST up reply actions

Since the Blazers only have one healthy SF, someone has to be the 3 on offense when a guard is in instead.

Roy doesn’t like to play SF, so Bayless drew that assignment tonight (offensively) despite not being a great off-ball shooter. But instead he had a pretty easy drive to the basket, where he draws fouls like a madman against anybody.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

The thing is

(and this is a big Hawes critic saying it), Spencer is a good shooter. Or at least, he can be.

The problem is he’s making really bad shot selections and isn’t getting in position to nail the shots that are in his range. 20 foot jumpers from your center are seldom a real good idea.

"When the going gets Weird, the Weird turn professional."
(Hunter Thompson)

by Mucho Moss on Dec 15, 2009 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

Watching this game made me realize he's just a poor man's Aldridge

He has the same shot selection and weapons. The difference is Aldridge is twice the athlete. There’s a chance that Spencer’s athleticism will always haunt him and he won’t be able to put himself in those positions. If that’s the case he will be inconsistent forever. This is really a doomsday scenario though and I hold out hope he’ll figure things out as he grows and become more consistent.

by hlebtasic on Dec 15, 2009 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

I'm thinking he's having a tough time

getting where he wants to on the floor. If Spencer could get stronger that would help. He’ll never be a very good athlete (NBA-wise), but he should be able to put the talents he does have to their best advantage. It seems he’s getting pushed around out there a lot, and he finds himself way out in the hinterlands, 18-20 feet away from the basket.

Obviously it’s still his fault that he’s taking those shots…

"When the going gets Weird, the Weird turn professional."
(Hunter Thompson)

by Mucho Moss on Dec 15, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

That's what I'm trying to get at

If he were able to get stronger he could post people up and work that fading bank shot Timmy and Sheed kill with. The problem is athleticism is something you just can’t teach. It just bothers me because I hate being jealous of the Blazers, but I really am jealous of Aldridge. He’s the player we want Spence to be.

by hlebtasic on Dec 15, 2009 10:00 PM PST up reply actions

yeah,

I’m pretty sure i haven’t checked in with you on this, hiebtastic, but it’s no secret around here that I’m not the biggest Shawes cheer leader. I’ve said many times that if and when the Kings do become a legit contender, Spencer will be playing elsewhere.

That said, guys like LaMarcus aren’t easy to come by. He was the 2nd overall pick in the draft, I think, right?

"When the going gets Weird, the Weird turn professional."
(Hunter Thompson)

by Mucho Moss on Dec 15, 2009 10:20 PM PST up reply actions

I wasn't aware but I agree

The Blazers commited a lot to Aldridge its true. And its not like they aren’t jealous of some of our assets. They would kill for Tyreke, and both Omri and Donte would help fill out their bench. In a couple of years we’ll find out who has a better young core.

by hlebtasic on Dec 15, 2009 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

oh, yeah... Tyreke is a goldmine!

With the possible exception of Brandon Roy, he was the most talented player on the court tonight. And within a year or so I may be altering my opinion.

The thing I forget about Tyreke is obviously his physical skills are extremely rare but his on-court experience is minimal. He was only a freshman at Memphis. Before the draft he’d played what? maybe 10 games at the point in Conference USA.?

He’s barely scratched the surface, and that’s pretty exciting

The thing is...

You need a couple more pieces at (or close to) that caliber of player to legitimately compete for the NBA title.

We had Chris Webber (arguably the most naturally gifted hoops talent of his generation), plus Peja, Vlade, AND Mike Bibby, plus a shut down defensive star in Doug Christie, and a great bench but still didn’t quite get there.

"When the going gets Weird, the Weird turn professional."

by Mucho Moss on Dec 15, 2009 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

We also have JT who looks like he might be a fringe all star. At least one more lottery pick. Kevin Martin who will be past his best when the Kings are ready but should still be able to drain threes. And whatever Donte and Omri turn into. Still need some big men, but who doesn’t?

by hlebtasic on Dec 15, 2009 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

With the exception of...

the L*kers, Celtics, Spurs, Bucks, Grizz and Magic, I think the rest of the league is looking for big men who can do it all. I’m still not convinced that Horford is a super center…yet

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

by JETisKing on Dec 15, 2009 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

Luck and some crooked refs!

Even so, the Lakers had Kobe and Shaq back then, plus Ron Harper, Horry and some other nice role players.

That’s two of the 50 greatest players to ever step on the court. The Kings were the better team but the Lakers were also amazing.

In 2008 the Celtics had Garnett (who’ll be giving a speech in Springfield one day), plus Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Rondo, etc…

The point is, it’s freakin tough to win the NBA championship. You need talent, talent and then a little more talent. Plus a great system that all the egos buy into.

We have a looong way to go, but in Tyreke I think it’s looking safe to say that we have at least one major piece in place to become legit contenders.

I felt like he moved the ball really well

He’s not really a weapon on offense, but when our offense starting working well during that stretch in the third it was largely because him and beno started to move the ball well. He doesn’t need to score to be an asset on offense. I just wish Kenny could do the same, although he had a great game as well.

by hlebtasic on Dec 15, 2009 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

Starters are killing us

The starters have been just terrible past few games. They dug a hole at the start of the game. Then blew a half time lead. As good a job as Westphal has done this year, his insistence on sticking to this starting lineup is wearing on me. Sure, this problem will go away once Kmart and Garcia are back, but I can’t help thinking we would be above .500 if Beno and Casspi (or Udoka) were starting.

PW has a pattern of going with most effective...

1st half line-up to start the 3rd quarter. Inexplicably, he did not do that tonight, and definitely hurt us.

yup..

..i was expecting beno to start the 2nd half.

by henryclemente on Dec 15, 2009 10:02 PM PST up reply actions

A big reason as to why Beno and Casspi have played so well

Is because they don’t have to match up against the starters. Our strength is our depth. It doesn’t matter who we start, we are still going to find ourselves in a hole at the end of the first because our best five is not as good as most teams’ best five.

by hlebtasic on Dec 15, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

I would...

…like to think that Beno and Casspi would match up better against opposing starters than Donte and Noc have been. I think Donte is more suited coming off the bench as a sparkplug, and Casspi more suited to getting starters minutes as effective as he’s been

I think we should have loftier ambitions

than just keeping it close. You put some distance between yourself and your opponent and you won’t have those high-pressure situations (in which the Kings have shown a knack for failing in).

There were several points in the game they could have pulled away. They were up 9 at the end of the half and the 3rd quarter, but failed to build on that lead – which they gave away – which led to a close game at the end; which they choked away.

Tough loss

Another close one that the Kings let slip. They will breakthrough, it’s just a matter of when. Once they do, it will feel good and it’ll serve as a good example for how to approach future road games.

The effort is still there, and the good play is still there, the execution at the end of games is not there. Too many mistakes and too many missd FTs hurt us again. Luckily, there’s no reason to believe this will not improve with experience and the development of the young guys.

We’re only a little over 20 games into our first season with what looks to be a bright group of players that are still without one of the two best players of the team. We are far from a complete product and a couple more important pieces will be added sometime in the future.

I’ve already seen more than I expected from these young guys and they can only get better. Yes, this hurts like hell, but I’m still smiling because of what’s still to come.

I love this team

Also, these were great matchups for Udoka and Thomas

Shutting down Roy and Aldridge absolutely kills the Blazers offense. Also Kenny doesn’t need to be an offensive threat on the offensive end because Aldridge is a terrible defensive player and can’t cheat off him. They both had great games, I don’t want to take anything from them. But this doesn’t mean their role needs to increase.

If we stay hovering around .500 one of those guys might still be on the board when it’s our turn.

Nate McMillan on Tyreke Evans

maybe the most effusive praise of any opposing player after a game this year….

I think that kid is really, really good. I watched him on tape and just how he moves, I think he has some — this is, you hate to compare players like this — but I think he’s got some Magic in him. He’s a big guard that can see the floor. He’s unselfish. He gets to the rim. He uses his body very well. He’s good in transition. He can rebound and push the ball. A small or big guard doesn’t really faze him. He sees the floor extremely well. That team is where they are because of Coach Westphal of course. Evans, he plays 3 positions — 1, 2 and 3 — who knows, when they get some of their guys back, you may even see him at some 4 because he’s got a big body. He’s going to be a very good player.

He’s strong. He’s confident. He’s under control. What you saw out there was a young guy just taking a game over. He never looked out of control. It wasn’t a selfish thing. Taking advantage of opportunities. Defensively he’s not bad. He can defend too. He’s a good player.

That's interesting.

To me it just seems like Evans is a shorter, more athletic version of Roy without an outside game. They’re both versatile, combo guards who can pass, rebound and get to the rim.

We won’t know for a while. Right now Roy is way more polished and has a more complete game. Evans will probably be the better defender.

Who knows.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 16, 2009 12:03 AM PST up reply actions

I agree

But the thing is that Evans doesn’t need to be a great outside shooter on this team. Everything he already does is perfect for this team. The only thing he needs to not do is turn the ball over (as much—and he’s not excessively turning the ball over either), and figure out the in/out’s of the NBA game. 23 games in, I can say I’m very pleased about Reke’s development.

This works because, the Kings get a 20/10 type in Al, a high energy shot blocker in Turiaf, and a nice “throw in” with Azubuike.

The Wolves get the defensive center they need next to Love, along with the sf they sorely lack in Noc. They also get Spence who, maybe needs a change of scenery to reach his potential.

The Warriors pretty much make this move for the 18 mill or so in cap relief.

by bukey on Dec 16, 2009 3:17 AM PST up reply actions

I threw in Serod and Speedy claxton.

Warriors get Serod in addition to the others and Kings get Claxton’s 5 mill expiring. that way Kings keep 8 mill in expirings (including Azubuike’s 3 mill)

There is a great place for this in the asinine trade thread.

Kings don't want AI

What position is he going to play? Also, he’s old and has this nasty habit of making his teams worse.

AL Jefferson

Not (AI) Allen ‘Was The Answer’ Iverson.

That being said, I much rather have Love than Jefferson.

There's nothing to fear but everything.

by elfboy_ on Dec 16, 2009 11:56 AM PST up reply actions

IDK

Al definitely has some lazy games – but he can be quite an imposing force when he wants to.

He’s 13th in the league in PER – way ahead of any of our big men. And only giving up Hawes and Noc? I’d do it.

I don't know man

an outside game seems to be really important for a guard. Look at Andre Miller, It’s the difference between being a solid point guard and the toast of the League.

I’m not at all saying he’s not going to develop an outside game, but it could be the difference.

If you had them both

That would be a pair to draw to. Two guys who can take over the game.

Of course he did.

That is exactly what Reke is. I will say this; I was disappointed in Westphal’s game plan toward’s the end. Tyreke should handle the ball every possession in the last 5 minutes. When he plays off the ball, the team has trouble finding him. You give the ball to your best player in the clutch.

Yep.

He had too little shot opportunities tonight. Some of that is the other guys, and some of that is Reke.

Blazers will get better as the year moves along and they get healthier.

Agreed

And if he leaves Tyreke on the court to start the 4th, when we were up 7, and had all the momentum, maybe we extend the lead to double digits, and change the entire tone of the quarter.

All these road loses have a common element. Opponents tighten defense down the stretch and we lack a secondary go-to guy after Tyreke. That will change when K-Mart returns.

I routinely check out the opposing teams blog to get a view point from,

our competition.

Reke, Casspi & JT consistently get good remarks.

Hawe’s consistently bad.

Everyone else gets a mixture.

Interesting…

I haven't seen

anything bad about Beno in awhile…wow…;)

by sroufe on Dec 16, 2009 12:28 AM PST up reply actions

Tonight was the first time since November 23, @ Memphis,

that Beno shot worse than 50% for a game (7 of 15 tonight)…crazy…60% (52/86) since that loss to the Grizz…

by sroufe on Dec 16, 2009 12:32 AM PST reply actions

The fact that Beno is well above 50% shooting is amazing

No way did I ever see that being possible.

Blazer and Kings fan here

I just want to say, I can’t wait for Tyreke to set the league on fire in the next 1-2 years (or months, you never know). Every Blazer-Kings game is always a great match-up. Also, I think if you combined LaMarcus Aldrige and Jason Thompson you’d have the perfect power forward.

by Gary: Badass on Dec 16, 2009 2:28 AM PST reply actions

Agreed on LaJason Aldson -

But you’d have to order custom-made foru-legged shorts.

Aldridge

really went off on us, and the only guy who held him in check was Kenny Thomas.

Tyreke is a beast

Spencer hawes reminds me of our steve blake. Either he hits hits shots, or else he is completely useless and cant do anything that is required from his position.

and did one of the blazer announcers call dick bavetta Dickhead during the game?
i thought i heard it from mike rice.
