A Closer look at the Kings Franchise--Part 1
Larry David's piece on the Maloof's financial woes and dealings was a great read and begs the question how an infusion of cash from the sale of their distributorship will impact the Kings' destiny over the next few years--assuming at least some of those proceeds will be used operationally for the Kings franchise going forward.
Recent success aside, do we think the Kings can compete for a title with merely a few more years of Geoff Petrie's wizardry and that is assuming Petrie is offered and accepts a new contract? Current trajectory shows this roster can make the playoffs either this year or next year assuming a healthy team. Getting to the Finals is quite another mountain yet to climb.
Unequivocally it will take more than our current roster to win a championship. Additionally there are a number of other issues that need to be addressed including a new Arena in order to keep the team in Sacramento and bring this franchise back to being an upper echelon team in the league. All of it involves money and its anyone's guess how much money will be needed.
Over the Summer, ESPN came out with its 7th annual ranking of all 122 professional franchises in the United States.
In the ESPN Ultimate Rankings teams are evaluated across the following 8 categories:
Bang For The Buck (BNG): Wins during the past three years (regular season plus postseason) per revenues directly from fans, adjusted for league schedules.
Fan Relations (FRL): Openness and consideration toward fans by players, coaches and management.
Ownership (OWN): Honesty and loyalty to core players and local community.
Affordability (AFF): Price of tickets, parking and concessions.
Stadium Experience (STX): Quality of arena and game-day promotions as well as friendliness of environment.
Players (PLA): Effort on the field and likability off it.
Coaching (CCH): Strength of on-field leadership.
Title Track (TTR): Championships already won or expected in the lifetime of current fans.
Here are the Kings' results in 2003:
| TEAM | RNK | BNG | FRL | OWN | AFF | STX | PLA | CCH | TTR | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Sacramento Kings | 4 | 15 | 4 | 3 | 17 | 14 | 7 | 21 | 29 |
And again in 2009:
| TEAM | RNK | BNG | FRL | OWN | AFF | STX | PLA | CCH | TTR | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Sacramento Kings | 117 | 108 | 87 | 115 | 110 | 112 | 117 | 121 | 101 |
In 2003, the Kings had the 4th best ranking in professional sports. The ownership was ranked 3rd. This year the Kings ranked 117th! Surprisingly Arco went from 14th down to 112th. Now I know there have been a number of new arenas that have opened up in the last 7 years but not 98 of them! The affordability ranking plummeted as well.
What can the Kings Franchise due to improve the overall product? I think the new players and coaches will improve those respective scores which will result in a higher Title Track ranking, but what area needs the biggest improvement in your minds?
In the next segment, I will compare what two other franchises are doing in hopes it may offer some clues on what the Kings can do to best improve the overall Product.

Kind of a strange way to analyze a franchise.
So many of these items are subjective and change from year to year and maybe even month to month. If the Kings were reevaluated today would BNG, CCH , or PLA be rated the same? Have the Maloofs done enough over the first 20 something games to FRL, OWN, AFF or STX. Forbes looks at dollars and cents but this ESPN thing has a lot of subjective moving parts.
The coaching, players and bang for your buck numbers are pretty off the chart right now. The Kings are bringing it every night. Evans looks like the rookie of the year and maybe even an all-star. Beno Udrih is being mentioned for most improved player and probably even 6 man of the year before everything is said and done. Omri Casspi- an Israeli born player who should make the rookie/sophomore game and maybe even get a shot in the three point shoot out. Jason Thompson is a stud and improving every game.
Westphal coaches a game minute to minute and seems to have a finger on the pulse of every single one of his 12 players (May doesn’t actually have a pulse). I have been hard on Westphal for his cosmic blundering of the first few games of the season but since that point he has been stellar. No Martin or Cisco? Kenny Thomas a defensive stopper? Donté Greene not a European player? Beno Udrih not a complete waste of MLE cash for the next 4 years? Westphal looks like a guy who will be here in Sac for a while.
I just sat in a pretty sweet seat for $10. I also believe that the promotions department is working hard with reduced tickets, $1 beer and holiday packages that include autographed photos of a ROY candidate and a bobble head.
ESPN has always been East coast bias and although the Kings were the belle of the ball in 2003, I think the mother ship has placed Sacramento were it rates the region. Does the stadium need replaced? Should the Maloofs give Petrie an extension and open the check book? Sure, but I think the team is being built the right way for todays economic climate and articles like this ESPN thing do very little for me.
No law when it comes to me.
I let you type critics write and I just keep it hood.
That will never change.

Hollinger and company rerated all teams this week
and based on improvement in coaching and draft and players, the Kings improved 6 or 7 spots (off the top of my head).

Funny how perception changes things.
Hahahha.

You are jumping ahead in my homework. Good catch!
Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.

I voted ownership
based on the definitions and the assumption that you deliberately left out Players, Coaching and Title Track for being too obvious, or something.
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
I assumed (insert joke here) that we are all happy with the improvements made in the coaching and player depts.
The title track seems like a by-product of the success of the team based on having solid players and coaching. I wanted to narrow the focus on what the biggest issues seemed to be in the fans opinions our to best understand the dramatic drops in these other areas…

Affordability & Bang for the Buck pretty similar
If I believed that the team had no or almost no chance of winning, I wouldn’t care how much they charged, I wouldn’t go. If they charged the kind of money that you have to pay for a good seat at Yankee stadium, I wouldn’t go if they won 90% of their games.
Affordability isn’t the issue. I might not be able to buy seasons tickets. But, almost everyone can afford a $10 ticket once a month. But, I won’t pay 10 cents to see last years team. If the team is competing and playing well, I’m willing to spend money to see them. I might have to save for a month to buy good seats.
It’s Bang for the Buck. Even in the Great Depression people still went to the movies. And, today movie houses are doing well. People might not be paying $6 for popcorn or $5 for soda but their going. The Kings are fighting for the same dollars as movie theaters.
If the product is good I’ll go. I might car pool to save on parking, and I’ll probably pass on $6 beer & $5 Hot Dogs, but I’ll spend the money. The Kings know what it takes to fill Arco. They did it on the 16th. By putting a good team on the floor, lowering the price of upper deck tickets, and promoting cheap refreshments. And, 6000 more people went to the game than the team averaged this season. Bang for the Buck.
With this team, all the Maloofs have to do is lower the price on half the upper deck seats, cut the price to parking to $5, and reduce concession prices by 33%, and they’ll start filling Arco for every game.
