My Big Fat Greek Recap: Kings v. Wiz
This was probably the most fun I've had at a Kings game, and no, it wasn't because of the dollar beer. The game was exciting, ARCO was bringing the noise, our young guys played awesome, and the finish was epic.
Some randomness before the recap:
- I would not be surprised to see a few more dollar beer nights this year. There didn't seem to be any alcohol related problems, other than the drunk guy who sat next to me after halftime and started dancing. It was truly a horrifying sight.
- I was sitting in Section 219, and during the first quarter, when K-9 checked in for the first time, I swear by Jon Brockman's elbows, I heard someone in Section 220 yell "Kenny Thomas has a nice ass!". I'm proud of you whoever you are.
- ARCO was loud. Like Glory Days loud. It was awesome.
- Favorite "ESPN" sign of the evening: Evans iS you're Personal Nightmare. Favorite sign of the night "The person behind me can't see". I kid you not.
- At one point the Kings had 5 white guys on the floor, each from a different country. I wonder how many times that has happened before.
Alright, now onto the game.
A bit of a surprise to me when Omri was announced in the starting lineup, and I told my friend "Wow looks like Omri got Donté's starting spot", but then Donté got announced. It dawned on me that Spencer was the odd man out, and at first I was surprised. Then I remembered his performance against Portland and it made sense. I wonder how long this will last. Again, he wasn't really consistent tonight, although I'm glad he didn't get a DNP-CD.
Kings had no answer for Jamison in the first quarter, but luckily, he was really the only Wiz doing any damage. Butler was off most of the night, but especially in the first half. Kings had trouble with the boards in the first half, and despite a far superior FG%, the 2nd chance points were keeping the Wizards in the game. Kings do grab a lot of rebounds, but they also tend to give up a lot as well, especially on the offensive glass. JT is an above average rebounder, but I think we need to add an elite rebounder to this squad before we can think playoffs.
In the 2nd half, Kings came out and played really well on offense, but the defense was somewhat lacking and the Wiz were able to get back in the game. There followed a time period of about 4 minutes where the Kings spaced the floor beautifully and continually found either Omri, Udoka, or Noc at the 3 point line, and mostly in the corner, wide open. That's the most efficient shot in basketball. If just one of those threes had gone in, the game would have pretty much been over, but unfortunately none of them fell. Omri in particular kept missing from the same spot, but I want Omri taking those shots. He can make them, and consistently. He wasn't missing by much either. Butler and Arenas finally started getting hot too, and luckily the Kings were able to withstand it. I don't know if I've ever seen a scoring spread like that before, one team with 2 30+ scorers, and the other with 3 20+ (and JT was close).
Omri definitely made the most out of his first start, and he could have had about 30 points tonight if he had hit some of those wide open threes he was getting in the 4th quarter. I'll have Omri shooting those any day. They weren't missing by much. Best part about Omri for me though was his 8-9 from the stripe, and I loved his general hustle and defense. He was everywhere.
Noc had a really solid offensive game, hitting a few really big shots. The Arena went crazy on his 4 point play in the 4th. Defensively he was outclassed by the crafty Jamison, and he really didn't do that great of a job. Casspi did a much better job on Jamison in the 2nd half.
Donté didn't have a gaudy game, but he played pretty effectively when he was in.
Udoka was simply wonderful for us. He seems to have finally kicked his Desmondmasonitis flu, and he was extremely valuable on both ends of the court. We would not have won this game without Udoka in my opinion. We almost lost it because of him too, with that bonehead inbound pass near the end. All is forgiven since we won though.
Beno finally had an off-shooting night, but he still was pretty effective, moving the offense well, and hitting the boards too. He was actually a bit of a bright spot to me in terms of rebounds, because at least 3 of them he wrested from Wizards players. Sergio didn't play much, but he ran the offense extremely well when he was in.
JT was great. His jumper is very Webberesque and he's becoming automatic from out there. He also had two huge blocks, and even though he had 5 fouls, a couple were sort of absurd. I remember on one sequence where it looked like JT got elbowed in the face by Jamison and JT was called for the foul.
And finally we come to the man of the hour, Tyreke Evans. This guy is a monster. The first quarter he was pretty much unstoppable, whenever he wanted to get to the basket, he did. Here was my 2nd favorite play of the game:
Absolutely insane.
Tyreke fell away a little bit in the 2nd half, having a few of his drives stuffed or stripped, and he began to settle for jumpers, one of which was an airball. He only hit one jumper in the game, and that one was in the 4th quarter where he really shined. He played pretty good defense on Arenas, at times having to switch on Jamison or Butler, and doing pretty well in both cases. The foul at the end of the game was unfortunate, but he definitely made amends for it with my favorite play of the game/year:
That my friends is the work of a superstar. Not a rookie. A superstar. One who we'll hopefully get to see do stuff like this for years to come.

Couple thoughts before I go to sleep
That swag from Reke after the steal is awesome. Superstar? Yes, Superstar!!! Let’s build around him please.
I was most definitely not the one that yelled “nice ass Kenny.” I was on section 201, last row. I AM glad that my movement is alive and well though.
I actually saw Gavin Maloof at the box office (I dropped a couple tix for friends coming late) and loved when he took the sign from Slamson to get everyone to get up. I was going nuts too, definitely one of the best games (if not the best) I’ve attended. I actually felt light headed from yelling at a point in the 4th; that was a first,
Clutch 3s frm Omri andNoce brought the house down. They gave the Kings momentum when they most needed it.
I had the same though when Omri got introduced, Aykis, but after seeing Donte I right away knew Spencer was sitting. Message sent coach, now time for Spencer to respond. I thought he did a good job when he came in. He may not be what some people want him to be, but he;s still a good player who is only 21 years old (yes, it’s wrth saying again),
I thought we got in trouble at the end because the ball stopped moving and Reke forced a couple drives and a couple shots. Like coach says, we gotta play in the fourth the same way we;ve been playing all game.
For all the positives, we almost gave that game away. I told a guy standing next to me at the end, “I now we;re young, but we can;t make those type of mistakes” after the Udoka bad inbound pass that led to the Butler dunk to cut it to 1. I’m glad they pulled it off.
One last thing, tonight is a great example why last night’s loss (in Portland) are tolerable. This is a young team and they are still learning. I think they got the winning at home part down, now let’s please be patient with winning on the road. It hurts but time is all we need for things to change.

+1 on the light headed-ness
I was yelling so much when Tyreke got that “steal” I thought I was having an asthma attack! Definitely the best regular season game I’ve ever been to.

Hmm
I think they got the winning at home part down
Current home record: 10-3
Last season’s home record: 11-30
That’s progress my friends.
Oh, and nice recap Aykis. To the upper level with you!

And 1
11th win last season? Feb 1st vs. OKC in OT – to bring our record to 11-38.
11-13 is very nice indeed. Let’s get back to .500.

Some thoughts...
I finally got to catch a Kings game on TV (first of the season!), so I wanted to contribute some thoughts on a few players. Since this was the first game I was able to watch (and I haven’t been too active on the boards this season), there may be some general thoughts mixed in…
Tyreke Evans
I was amazed. His play was fantastic, but the amazing thing to me was that most of it didn’t look spectacular…it was just good basketball. He does the fundamentals very well and seemed to display good vision.
Loved how the kid attacks the middle. Off the dribble in the high post, from the wings, from the top of the key…he was great at attacking open space. One thing I found notable was how much Evans can do off his 2-step gather once he hits the lane. He covers a ton of space during it, and changes directions within his gather very well. And he passed very well out of these drives also. But man, I love a guard who knows how to attack open space.
What I would like to see from Evans is a slight tightening up of his handle when he drives. His dribble seemed a little too loose for my comfort, and it got away from him a bit last night (though he recovered). I would also like to see him probe the defense early in the shot clock…almost driving the lane from one side and coming out the other, a-la Gilbert Arenas or Steve Nash (Nash is great at this)…I love how this move collapses the defense (if only for a bit…which is great as we have shooters) and even creates some mismatches on switches, as the defense has no choice to to rotate and cover the probe.
Omri Casspi
Man, what a draft pickup. It’s always great when you’re watching a rookie and think, “man this guy doesn’t look like a rookie”. The overall impression I came away with of Casspi is that he’s got a little fearlessness and swagger in him. I like his defensive effort (with time I think he can become tenaciously annoying) and the fact that he has no problem driving the lane — and you can never have too many shooters that can drive the lane. As he learns to become a better passer, he’ll be a great triple-threat out on the wing.
Jason Thompson
Thompson looked good. He has a smooth jumper, and looks like he has good range (sinking 18 footers?). I was getting a little peeved in the rebounding department…sure he pulled down 13 boards (I think), but he seemed to give up a lot of offensive boards to Haywood/Blatche (although this was a team issue last night). In particular there were a number of Wizards possessions in which a shot went up and Haywood had Thompson buried deeper beneath the rim, making it easier for him to grab the rebound. Position JT, position! Otherwise, I loved seeing him work the post with his back to the basket. While it seems like there are getting to be fewer and fewer back-to-the-basket post men in the league these days, I like that JT still has strong moves with his back to the basket, but also has an outside shot…and heck he and drive to the hoop a bit as well. When you have wing players who can both drive the lane and nail jumpers (Casspi, Martin), AND have a post player who can back down or play outside, it opens up a lot of interesting inside-out options on offense…
Kevin Martin
Hmm…cool suit. Dammit why are you injured when I can catch a game??
Team Observations
Defensively, I thought we looked good. Our effort and execution was good…the Wiz did seem to knock down some contested shots with hands in their faces. Jamison straight abused us early…it seems we have a glaring need for a good post defender.
Our defense on ball screens on the inside (less 18ft) seemed a little lazy at times. But we looked like we defended outside screens pretty well…our bigs did a good job of showing on those screens, which I liked.
Our offense was humming last night, and would’ve looked even better had Noce & Casspi knocked down a couple open 3’s. I thought it was great that Beno, who had been playing pretty lights-out, had a fairly average game point-wise, yet the slack was picked up by Udoka off the bench and great games by both Nocioni and Casspi…we’re showing signs of depth!
Best of all, the team looks like they were having fun, and ARCO looked like it was rockin. Did I correctly hear the game sold out? When players are playing happy on the court, typically they are playing well too.
I can’t wait to see the team when Martin gets back. How do you defend two guards who could both get to the cup at will, share shooting guard-size, and could both easily get you 25pts if you let them?
GO KINGS!

2 Guards, 1 Cup. I’m not going to Google that.

One note on Spencer
I think that the issue with Spencer playing was, at least in part, match up problems. When Spencer was in they went against him, posted up, and pushed him all the way into the paint and under the rim.
He did/does not have enough lower body strength. I had not really noticed that before and I saw that they couldn’t keep him right away. He just can’t defend and keep people from backing him up into the paint.
In seeing that it seems like he really can’t defend against Centers with really strong lower body strength…

I agree
My thoughts was that the Kings didn’t want JT in early foul trouble, because Jamison is exactly the type of Forward that would get him into foul trouble.
I think we’ll see either Spencer or K-9 in the starting lineup against Minnesota Friday, mainly because I think although Love could be defended by Noc (who would be playing PF if we went with last nights starting lineup), Love would abuse Noc on the boards.
And Spencer and K-9 are our best interior defenders, which should help against Big Al. Hopefully the memory of the last matchup is still fresh in Spence’s mind and he doesn’t bite for Al’s pump fakes so much this time.

In the post game presser
PW sounded like the matchup, in his view, was not a good one for Spencer.

I don't 100% believe that match ups was the main issue.
PW does put together some unusual rotations. He even had Donte playing center. But, we were getting hammered on the offensive boards and could have used some size, and he still didn’t use Hawes until JT’s 3rd foul made it mandatory.
Jefferson & Love are no way near as difficult to rebound against as Haywood & Jamison, and as in the last MINNY game, Brockman & Thomas shouldn’t have a major problem covering them. If Spencer doesn’t start (which I don’t believe he will), we’ll know for sure that match ups wasn’t the main reason, Spencer sat. In fact, Chicago is the only team on this next road trip, that poses a challange in the rebounding department.
Over the last 10 games Donte is shooting 40% from the field, 22% from 3’s and is averaging 7.5ppg. And, as much as I love seeing Tyreke defended by PG’s, I have to agree with what JR said during the last game. Donte is better suited to play PF. He’s quick enough to get around them and quick enough to stay in front of them. That’s why I believe he’s the right guy to defend Love. Love is a outside shooter who can score inside off of the offensive boards. He’s not going to back you down.
I like JT (Center), Donte (PF), Omri (SF), Udoka (SG), & Tyreke (PG) for the starting line up. That’s a bigger front line than Minny can put out. Tyreke & Udoka give us good defense in the back court and should help stop fast breaks. Plus the bench of Spencer, Brockman, & Omri could start this game and do well, and the back court of Sergio & Beno should open up the scoring for the reserves.

with this kind of play from the kid, seeing that atmosphere in the arena again, and after the pains of recent seasons, a lesser man than myself might get emotional (sniff).
