I'm considered a big guard in this league and going against Tyreke I felt little tonight.

Ironically enough

I was thinking about Tyreke and who he and his game reminded me of and I thought of a bigger Arenas. I think right now Arenas is a better perimeter shooter, but assuming Tyreke improves there…be afraid. Be very afraid.

Please consider the environment before reading this signature.

true dat

Tyreke’s game-winning steal was better than Kobe’s game-winning shot, especially since Kobe got bailed out big-time by the ref when he travelled on the previous play.

The Tyreke play should have made the ESPN highlights because of his consideration for R.O.Y. and his steal coming against one of the elite players in Gilbert Arenas.

But it’s a good thing that star calls don’t affect the outcome of games.

Arenas got a star call last night, too.

That dead ball foul? If you watch the replay, there was no jersey holding involved. Totally bogus, and just about cost us the game.

Style over substance

ESPN highlights are all about the bling. Had Arenas not fouled Evans and Evans went on to dunk, it would have made the highlights, even though his free throw conversions are much more impressive when you consider his age and the game circumstances.

Brandon Roy doesn’t make a lot of ESPN highlights either – he’s just a freakin’ stud, Tyreke’s stealthy play may not make a lot of top ten lists, but he’s ours and that’s OK by me.

They actually commented on that a little early on

He made a really crisp bounce pass to someone and JVG started talking about how he made the pass that needed to be made without any flash or flair like a lot of youngsters would. He did what was needed to get the points.

Great point, 214.

ESPN doesn’t get advertising money if they didn’t show replays of Nash, Bron-Bron, Wade and Kobe. Those guys are the money making poster boys for the NBA and sports shows in general.

There’s no doubt Tyreke will have his day soon enough.

Even the Spurs don’t get as much love for the same reason.

And really it doesn't matter like winning does

ESPN highlights are for all fans and they try to get the most exciting highlights for the group as a whole. Thats what good marketers do. Atleast we don’t have to depend on the national fan base to give out awards based upon what they see on ESPN. When all is said and done Reke will get his regonition from those that know the game best (e.g. coaches and GM’s), who vote for ROY and All Star apperances.

I hope I stated that correct. I forget if the media have votes or not? But you get my point anyways.

I'm beyond caring about ESPN highlights

Seriously, who gives a crap what some network decides to show? I used to watch Sportscenter for highlights, but with things like the Kingsflix channel on YouTube and the ability to watch archived games via League Pass (if I wanted it), it doesn’t matter. You can still see the highlights and get excited, whether the Kings are getting “respect” from a bunch of Big Media chumps at ESPN.

Word. it is kinda hard to wrap my head around that we have a very good young player—not a very good for where he was drafted, or better than people thought he would be type of guy—but a guy who, if he maintains a moderate development path, will be a year-in-year-out allstar.

by DustyG on Dec 17, 2009 9:50 AM PST up reply actions

Do you think bigger point gurads will start to be a trend?

Teams may be looking at bigger guards because of mismatch problems. If the guy has handles like a point guard but built like a 2 guard let him do it.

by BucksForever on Dec 17, 2009 11:06 AM PST reply actions

There's a reason you rarely see big guards like that

Its because most of them don’t have the skill of a Tyreke Evans.

How many "big" point guards can you think of in the last 20 years?

Magic, Penny, Mark Jackson, Jason Kidd, Ron Harper, Gilbert Arenas?

I’m sure there’s more, but they are few and far between compared to the sample size.

Thanks, wow, I thought for sure he was bigger but

I think it had to do with him taking the other guards to the post alot. I cant wait for Martin to get back and have Casspi on the other side of the floor so Reke can kick it out to one of them for the open three when they double in the post.

The Clippers tried it w/ Shawn Livingston

He seemed like he was coming along before the knee injury, but not that quickly. Tyreke is almost the first of his kind…

The NBA: "Where 27 free throws happens"

And the Suns tried it with Boris Diaw

That didn’t work out. Livingston would have worked because he had great quickness and court vision pre-injury. He still has the vision, but his quickness just isn’t there. I feel bad for the guy, he looked pretty good.

Yeah, there was this one 6"8' small forward guy that acted like a PG a while back.

He lasted for while, and I guess he did OK.

All joking aside, like Aykis said, it’s rare to see someone at that height still having the necessary quickness and ball handling ability to play the point. There has always been a few, but there has never been many. The 6"5’ or over PG will always be a slight anomaly.

Luckily we’ve got one!

Watching Tyreke last night...

A thing of beauty, his game. I don’t know which stuff I like better. The one on Deron Williams or the one last night on Arenas.

He just has a complete game. It seems like a lot of bigger guards are either good scorers or good defenders and not both. Stars, however, have both and Tyreke fits in that mold. Definitely.

Bold prediction. Tyreke Evans, by the end of the year, will have stuffed more all-star players than any other guard in the league.

All I really want this Christmas

is for Reke to torch Jennings for 55+ this weekend.

Not sure I’ll get it, since Reke doesn’t put up gaudy numbers in a single game to become ESPN’s flavor of the month — but here’s hoping.

There's nothing to fear but everything.

by elfboy_ on Dec 17, 2009 9:00 PM PST reply actions

I'd rather

him go for 25 and hold Jennings to single digits. I think that would say more about his overall game than putting up huge numbers.

by babasin on Dec 18, 2009 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

I also believe that Tyreke Evans is making his teammates better.

They aren’t standing around waiting for him to “be” the offense (oh, those old Kings teams when the strategy for the last two minutes was “give it to Mitch and clear out”).

I think that Tyreke has been a very positive influence on Donté – he has set the bar higher and now his fellow young’uns are working to keep up. They see him defending and they defend harder/better as well.
