Perhaps another big who can also mentor Spence?
Say what you want about Brad-baby, but he really seemed to have taught Spence quite a bit. I know Spence continued to do pretty well last season after he left. But perhaps we need a starting big who can also teach Spence? I know we have SAR etc., but maybe a player-mentor is in order? Just a random thought. And no, I don't want B-52 back. Wish Vlade was still playing.

The only thing he needs to learn he can teach himself.
K9 and SAR are all over him enough, it’s up to him to step up the effort.
He’s not special enough to warrant a roster spot for a personal tutor.
They could certainly use another big, but being a mentor should be way down the list of desired attributes.
Spence need to bring it
Every night. Intensity and effort. That is what he lacks. He isn’t coming with his mind right. The only drawback to telling a player that they are not good enough and benching them is that they might take a while or have a hard time getting their shit together.
Spencer has been put on notice that he can’t just play offense and has to step it up defensively. That playing D will get him minutes and he has not yet shown consistent D.
All he has to do is find a way to psyched up before every game. Maybe he can join Brockness Monster (aka the Thing) in whatever it is he does cause that guy comes to play hard every night.
I don't know why PW lost confidence in Hawes
maybe defense, but Spencer seems to be able to defend better than JT and Spencer doen’t have JT’s foul problems. Rebounding and offense seem to me to be the biggest problem. At times he rushes his shot in the paint or can’t back down anyone but still tries. Rebounding is obviously a problem, not lower body strengh and poor positioning, and poor effort.
As far as getting a tudor, I think Truck has the knowledge & experience to teach Spencer.

I think that there are some defensive issues
I know that you like Spence, but he has some deficits on D that I hope you would recognize… You have at times, but seem to get a bit defensive when people lay into him.
I think that his best defense is weak side. He is good, on occasion, at coming from the weak side and making blocks at the rim, but other than that… I guess he can be OK, but there are just some guys that he can’t match up against. Strong athletic types can just school him.
I have seen him get pushed completely under the rim. That isn’t great lower body strength and may be positioning issues as well. He can defend OK against guys that are slow and not too strong. Against quicker guys or guys that are savvy at positioning themselves and that have even a fair amount of strength he gets abused.
Rebounding is all about positioning so I don’t know there,,, seems knowing how to position and box out is an issue, that and being able to jump quickly and high. He seems gangly and not that nimble.
I do agree that Truck can teach him, but have to wonder if his gawkiness is just the way he is made and can he improve on being a quicker and better Center if that is just him and the way he is built? I guess time will tell.
I can't disagree with anything you said
As to my defense of Spencer, It has more to do with your last sentence
I guess time will tell.
But, also because I’m not one to cut off my nose to spite my face. We only have Spence. Yes, we do have Thomas & JT. But, Thomas can’t give you 30+ minutes against a true NBA center, and if you move JT to center, who’s your replacement PF? Thomas is terrible away from the basket, Brockman can’t defend bigger PF’s like Aldridge, Green, Duncan or Gasol. That only leaves Donte. So, if the best combo after Hawes & JT is JT & Donte, and we know Hawes is the youngest big we have and is still developing, then why attack him. It’s not that we can do anything about it, and he’s going to become a good center or he’s not. As, you said yourself, “time will tell”.
It’s not that we can’t evaluate his pluses & minuses, but if there isn’t anyone to take his spot, I just think it’s better to give him the benefit of the doubt as to how his career is going to develop. At least until someone comes along to challenge him.

Brad taught Spencer a lot, including bad habits like being a whiner.
Spencer’s problem seems to be his attitude. He’s had plenty of excellent games and stretches of extremely consistent play. For some reason it hasn’t happened this year, which is ironically enough the year that everyone else has been playing great ball. Somethings going on with him that’s caused this major drop off in production.

I think at this point in his career that...
it is best if he comes off the bench, those are what his numbers and performance dictate. I wish he was more and who knows maybe he will develop to a point where he can start. Right now, today though I would say bring him in off the bench and put my effort into getting the defensive and rebounding center that he sub in for. This guy is in his early 20’s I see no reason to trade a quality backup at the very least, but I am losing faith he can start and make an impact at this time.
Unfortunately
He’s the best we have right now. Kenny and Brockman when healthy can play spot minutes, but they aren’t the answer. Either is Spencer, but it looks like Westphal has concluded it’s better to start Spencer and send in reinforcements later. In the meantime, you have to assume Petrie is working to bring in another big man by the deadline.

Spencer doesn't need anything right now except time and good coaching
He did a great job last night on Bogut; Bogut got almost all of his points when Spencer was out.
Spencer is far and away the best post defender on the team, he’s probably close to NBA average now. He definitely needs to become stronger, but he’s 21. I don’t know about you guys, but I got a hell of a lot stronger from age 21 to 26 or so, and I certainly didn’t have NBA strength coaches or nutritionists.
As far as attitude and motivation, there have certainly been times Hawes has had issues this year. But since his benching, he’s been playing his ass off. He and Casspi are the only two that even showed up for the MN game. Spencer also loses his cool and lets a call or a missed easy shot get to him. That will get better; its better he has that than he just doesn’t give a shit.
Offensively, we’ve all seen him struggle. He tries to do too many things, and isn’t good at any of them yet. What he really lacks is polish on his game. He misses put backs and layups; his midrange jumpshot isn’t NBA ready, he feels the pressure when good defenders get after him, and of course he doesn’t make enough 3’s. On the other hand, he probably has the best court vision of anyone on the team, is a good passer, he is amazing from 10-12 feet or so at times and he gets good post position. On offense, he needs to do a lot of things better; happily they are all possible with time and work.
Spencer just needs someone to hold him accountable, which PW has done a great job of, and assistent coaches to help him, which it seems like we have. Will he put in the time, and is he actually talented enough to be pretty good? Who knows, I think so, because he seems to want it to me, but its not a sure thing.
I do know Spencer is more than likely 7-9 years away from his peak as a player. Think about it, its a hell of a long time, so people are going to feel a lot better if they relax some and have a longer range view.

You may be right
But Spencer needs to improve in the next 1-2 years or he’ll be peaking for someone else.

If its 7-9 years
We need some significant help sooner than that or Tyreke will be playing for someone else by then as well.

The only difference I have seen in Spencer this year...
…is that he has lost confidence in his jumper. Last year, he hit jumpers with regularity and even hit the 3 out past the elbow with on a consistent basis. This year he can’t throw it in the ocean.
His defense hasn’t regressed (it just wasn’t ever that good) and he has never been able to score with his back to the basket with any consistency. These are not new problems.
I like Spence and he is a good passer for a big man, but he doesn’t defend strong centers well down low (gives up position to easily and then gets called for fouls), and he has yet to develop any consistent post moves (Jason Thompson has taken a huge step forward in this respect, but Spence hasn’t which is disappointing).
I have felt for awhile that Spence would end up coming off the bench in a 3 man rotation if we ever were able to get another decent 4-5 player with Jason sliding over to the 5 if the other player was a 4.
That player might come in this year’s draft as it is deep at the 4 position. My dream is that we luck out in the lottery and then we get a crack at Derrick Favors or Ed Davis. I also would trade John Wall for Brook Lopez (sorry Sims) if we got the top pick if NJ was game.
oh gawd...
7 to 9 years!? Noooooo!!!
If Hawes is still on the Kings by 2016 I’ll be in the nuthouse, having finally cracked up after all those years of watching slow-footed attempts to box out opponents and hundreds of “hey, check it out, I’m a 7 foot Ray Allen” jump shots from 19 feet out that bounce harmlessly off the backboard…

I don't know what to tell you :)
I don’t think the coaches and front office are nearly as down on Hawes as you or to a certain extent coolcat (in his comment above) are.
I am sure the front office would love to add another big guy, but even if they do, Hawes is still going to get a lot of time for the remainder of the year at least.
Maybe over the summer our draft pick turns into the post guy everyone wants. Of course, I would love that to happen, but I think its relatively unlikely. Even talented bigs can take some time to grow up, which means you’re probably locked into a couple of years of Spencer at 25+ min a night.

I have no problem with that
Its the ‘all our eggs in the Hawes/JT basket’ that bothers me. We need not just one more guy – there should be two for a really good team.

At the start of the season I would have said wait until the draft
but, now I have to agree with you. With the way the team is improving we’re not likely to see a top 10 draft pick any time soon. And, getting out from under Noc & Cisco’s contracts doesn’t look good. Therefore we’re not likely to have enough cap space next season, for a major acquisition.
We have no expiring contracts to trade in 2010/2011, so we would have to give up picks and talent to get a vet big. So, I only see a couple of options. 1) we get lucky in the lottery. 2) we use K9’s expiring, protected draft picks & talent to make a deal before or at this years trade deadline., or 3) build a team around our guards & wings, and hope Hawes, JT & Donte develop into serviceable bigs over the next year & a half.
But, I’m also open to a deal for someone like DeAndre Jordon, Javalle McGee, or Roy Hibbert. I don’t necessarily believe the Kings need to hurry their progress by overpaying for veteran inside help. JT is making major strides in his offense. Although I believe he has a way to go to catch up with Hawes & Donte at the defensive end.
Spencers’ rookie contract doesn’t expire for another year and a half. His performance (statisically speaking) is only down in minutes per game & defensive rebounds over last year. He may not be the center we need to make us a playoff contender, but I don’t think his development is overly slow. Or, that he’s reached his full potential.

I agree with. At least it would be for someone with a year or two under thier belts. All of those guys still have a chance to be pretty damn good. To get any of them we might have to take on a bad or mediocre contract in exchange for K-9 though.

That's fine, at least we dont have to give up any young talent or Martin.
"If you don't have anything good to say, LIE" - Mom
Spencer has some talent
and he’s still young. From what we’ve heard, he’s pretty coachable, and he’ll get better. I think he’ll be fine in a few seasons. That said, if Petrie was to package him along with Martin for a legit big than they’d probably do it in a second.
