Time to Rant

Note: After posting this, I realized that maybe I listened to just a couple bad segments and Napear was for the most part positive about last night and Kevin. Just wanted to write that to be fair. I still believe I had a right to rant about some things that I heard so here it is...

I don't usually rant like this but I have to get something off my chest and didn't want to mess up other thread. The following paragraphs have no order, no though process, lack of proper grammar, and no purpose whatsoever. It's just me ranting

Star-divide

So I get out of work and listened to Peaches' show (first mistake). They're talking about how great the comeback was and taking a lot of calls. A couple callers do the same 'why does everyone think Kevin Martin is a star, we should trade him BS' and I'm getting pissed because neither Peaches nor Mike Lamb say shit about it. Then they start questioning is Kevin can 'adjust' to Tyreke and take on a secondary role. Are we idiots here, that we're the only ones that see that Kevin has close to 0 ego and will do whatever it takes to help this team. Yes, it may be tough at first to incoorporate because he's gonna be big part of the offense but come on, Peaches and Lamb act like he's this ballhog who will not accept to take a couple less shots because he wants to be 'the man.' Doesn't the scarlett douchebag travel with the team and witnesses firsthand how supportive Kevin (and Cisco) are of this team and how it'd be stupid to question's Kevin's character. Is there really a reason not to be positive about his return?? I don't get it.

They get another caller later, when Lamb was by himself, and the guy says how Kevin's injury was a bit of a blessing in disguise because Reke had to step up and be the guy. He also says that once Kevin comes back, that backcourt is going to be sick, which most of us agree. Unfortunately Lamb opens his mouth and again says, "that is (backcourt being awesome) if Kevin can accept and adjust a secondary role." I lost it there just because of the way he kept saying the same shit. Are you saying he can't adjust because he's an Allen Iverson type player who only cares about his stats and being 'the man.' Are you fucking serious Lamb? I'm sure those who listen to Sportsline know what I'm talking about. It was so frustrating.

After a huge win, all these idiots, who are suppose to be supporting the team, do is question how our second best player will 'adapt' to coming back as if he was a selfish prick. Of course they were saying great things about Tyreke and rightfully so but while doing that they were forgetting something. Last night, it was a team effort. The Kings are better because of the team being better, every single part. I loooooovvveeee Tyreke and pray he's the superstar we've been waiting for, but while being a big part of our success, he's not all of it. It's also the coaching staff, it's also the new and improved Beno, it's also the development of JT, it's also Casspi and Brockman, i'ts also Donte's bright spots, it's also Kevin winning that game against Memphis, it's the whole team. Peaches and Lamb are like little Jonah Brother's fans who just want to talk about their new star while they forget the big picture about this team (at least that what I got from listening to their crap tonight).

Sorry for wasting your time but just had to get this out.

Who needs Kevin?

When we have ed? The man who rallies the Kings from 35 points down with sheer hope.

But stuff like this is why I never listen to Grant and Mike. And why we make fun of Peaches.

I Agree With This

I was also listening and was just annoyed by the callers that said it was a good win but we need to trade kevin or cisco because Kevin can play with Tyreke . Lets see how it goes first before we judge whether or not they can co-exist (although i do believe they will play together just fine) before we start trade talks, and dont judge on the first game Kevin comes back and go “oh tyreke and kevin had bad games they cant play together trade him” lets give it a month or at least to the end of the season to fully judge this team.

I dont think adding Two offensive threats to this squad will cause this team to go into a down spiral, but rather make them from being a good team, to a VERY good team

It was more about the timing

We just had an amazing win nd we could be adding more talent soon, and you (Napear and Lamb) can’t defend this team and the players but actually help in questioning whether it would work? Shit, say that we have to wait to see it on the court but have no reason tobelieve I can’t work. I guess I expect too much from the ‘Kings radio.’

Once you start expecting more from Kings Radio

our gonna be disapointed 99.9 percent of the time. Anybody watch ESPN today, all day they were talking about “whats wrong with the Bulls?” “is this the end for Vinny Del Negro?” not once did they mention this exciting young Kings Team, but thats to be expected since we dont have LeBron,Kobe,Brett Farve or Tiger

Righteous anger

and you are right. So glad I don’t have to listen to the Sac stations. The big thing for me across the media spectrum is that this issue is almost taken as the Gospel by writers and commentators who should know better. They just should. It’s a ridiculous proposition on it’s face and anyone who has the remotest knowledge of Kevin Martin the player and his game should know that while we don’t yet know how "Reke and Kevin will ultimately play together the idea that they can’t co – exist because Kevin needs his touches just doesn’t know anything about basketball or this team.

I have come to the conclusion that the only “experts” who know anything are historians and even they can’t agree about things that have happened in the past.

I disagree with your portrayal of Grant's position

He clearly stated that why would anyone consider trading Kevin before you give him and Tyreke 20 healthy games together. He followed that with it could end up being one of the best backcourts in the league or maybe not work. No one knows. Then he followed with he thought it would be the former instaed of the latter.
Lamb is the tool on these kind of topics.
Also, the longer I looked at my spelling of portrayal the wronger it looks.

by edm7 on Dec 22, 2009 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

ElRon I agree - Napear has said contrasting things here, he is the wrongiest

During the win last night and in the post game Grant was besides himself with compliments for the effort and energy of the team and the coaching staff.
If today, he abandoned those statements to knock down fans (and the team) from the clouds, than shame on him.
The worst mistake Grant and Mike can do is mess with the passion of a real Kings fan. Foolish, foolish boys.

The other part of this is that many of the people who call in are of the Sacbee.com/Kings variety. These trogladytes are net pollution and with audio – air pollution as well. They are not fans, they are maggots on the underbelly of vermin. Never a kind word, only finding ill will where hope and happiness reside.

by betweentheeyes on Dec 22, 2009 8:57 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Tell me how you really feel about the callers

I agree Grant can contradict himself..I attribute that to him not being very bright…I don’t mean that cruelly, I just think its true.

by ElRonToro on Dec 22, 2009 10:01 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know if they are maggots

But they appear to be of subpar intelligence for the most part. I don’t know if KHTK screens these kinds of people specifically for Grant, so he can get apoplectic, or if it’s just a sad reflection on our city.

There was one caller last night (in the 5 minutes I could muster listening before I wanted to run my car off into the ditch) who made the case for trading Kevin, based on the fact that Geoff Petrie hung onto Ron Artest too long – and we saw how that trade turned out, didn’t we? So do Mike and Grant mention Donté Greene or Omri Casspi in rebuttal? No, of course not.

What is with people who, in one breath, complain that Kevin is fragile – and in the next breath expect us to trade him for some amazing bounty of talent and draft picks? Do they think that other GMs in the league don’t see that Kevin’s been hurt quite a bit the last few years?

In my opinion, trading Kevin right now would be stupid, in that you’d be selling low – and that there is no pressing reason to do this right now. The downside to keeping Kevin is the chance he gets hurt again right away after coming back. The upside to keeping Kevin is that he increases his value over time, and you have possibly the best backcourt in the NBA for the next half decade. This is a no-brainer decision for Petrie IMO.

This is still a rebuilding year – and if you’re rebuilding you might want to see if your future superstar first-round draft pick and your ultra-efficient (and still young) All-Star caliber two guard can mesh in the backcourt, before you split them up.

I suspect the trade Martin argument

goes the same way of our post draft argument of when (if) Evans should start.
In retrospect that one seems pretty stupid now, and I suspect this one will too when our back court duo is gettinf 45 points, 10 RBs and 8 or more assists a night.

But

Grant did say (twice while I was listening) – that it would be “very interesting” to see how Kevin accepts his role as a subordinate to Tyreke in crunchtime – with the emphasis on “very interesting”. Neither of the knuckledragging mouthbreathers so much as muttered the fact that Kevin doesn’t appear to have the ego necessary to be a problem child if he’s not getting “his” down the stretch.

Such a wrong observation

I’ve been listening to the show all day …Grants actually on Kevin’s side. He was getting pissed at the callers, calling in talking about trading Martin, when just last night they made Kings franchise history!

He also believes Martin will fit in with the team and with Tyreke.

It’s the idiotic callers you should be mad about. The kings made one of the most amazing comebacks ever … and all the “fans” wanted to talk about was trading Kevin.

Let’s give him a chance to play with the team first…pretty premature thinking, dontcha think?

by Jaylee209 on Dec 22, 2009 9:36 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

Defintely a rushed observation

Appreciate the feedback jaylee. As I said I didn’t listen to the whole show so I guess I just got the bad segments.

At the same time, I can honestly say that many of the callers had positive things to say about Kevin coming back and I thought Napear and Lamb, in an attempt to maintain the situation interesting wouldn’t support the notion that there wouldn’t be a problem because of the type of guy Kevin is.

I do remember a couple examples but it’d be easier to just leave it at that. I did not listen to the whole things so for all I know, the rest of the show was very positive. It was a rant for a reason, just a quick burst of anger.

Kevin Martin

I actually met Kmart while I was pumping gas at the Chevron right by Arco. I had to do a double take but when I saw his face I immediatly said “oh shit your Kevin Martin”

This was around the time he got his new contract, and my god he put that to go use (his car was insane).

But my point is, while I was talking to him (and he was happy to talk to a fan might I add) I said “its exciting to watch you, your deffinitly a star in the making” to which his reply was “thanks man, I just wanna do what ever to help us win”

My tank had filled up and it was time to go, so I wished him luck on the season and left.

Hes not gonna be a douche bag ball hog when he gets back. I know that because, even after he got his millions he was humble. I cant wait for him to come back and prove these dick heads wrong. Its stupidity like this that we hear/see/read which fuels a whole generation of morons. I got friends that are Laker fans telling me “you guys need to trade Kevin Martin, Tyreke cant play PG” to which I reply “watch a kings game before you tell me Tyreke isn’t capable of playing PG”

The funny thing these so called experts forget is that Tyreke was drafted not only because he’s a man beast, but he was drafted to play with Kevin Martin. Kevin Martin was the one who told GP and management he wanted to play with Tyreke Evans. That is why it baffles me when these sports heads say they can’t play with each other and that K-Mart should be traded. Why we have what a 5 game sample of what they can do when Tyreke was obviously hurt and was just a deer in the headlights. Now he’s acclimated to the NBA and when K-Mart gets back fully our offense becomes even more potent.

When has Kevin ever shown a penchant for being the “alpha male” on this team? While I do think there will be an adjustment to be made once Kevin comes back – e.g. Tyreke – “Holy crap! Every time I get this guy an open look, he knocks it down!”, it won’t have anything to do with egos and will have everything to do with learning eachother’s games. Moreover, Martin’s game is perfectly suited to playing with a guy like Evans given how well he moves without the ball and how easily Evans breaks down defenses.

The player I am more interested to see with regard to adjusting is Garcia. He is much more of an alpha male, and has “played” the point in the past and has also taken quite a few end of game shots for the Kings. For this team though, Garcia needs to become a spot up shooter on offense but more importantly, a defensive force off the bench. I think he has the ability to do those things, but he is going to have to adjust his mentality a bit…

"Granted, this is not a great situation, but when all you have is lemons, you add some vodka to dull the pain..."

He already is a spot up shooter

I always thought Garcia’s time as PG took away from his best overall game. That being, he is a great spot up shooter. He has consistent improved his 3P% and most recently in 2008-9 shoots just under 40%. Just as a point of reference, Ray Allen shoots around that same 3P%. I always thought he could hurt other teams a lot more if he was knocking down 3’s, but would often have to play PG.

Also, Garcia is a team player. He does and plays whatever he is asked to do. I think this is supported by how he has filled so many roles and has been so flexible in the past. I highly doubt he will have any problems.

Furthermore, as a point of reference Garcia’s 3P% is not that far under Martin’s. Martin shot about 42% last year and came out on fire in his first 5 game shooting 45% before injury.

Having both Martin and Garcia to line up along the 3 point line will free up the paint. Subbing in both Beno and Casspi to shoot lights out off the bench even further adds to the impact we will have.

The addition of Martin and Garcia back into the rotation can only be a good thing.

David Thorpe

thinks that Kevin is the perfect compliment to Tyreke, and i agree. Kevin’s not a guy who needs the ball in his hands. We all know Kevin’s not a #1 guy, and he won’t have to be. He’ll be fine. He has no ego, neither does Garcia. It’ll be a smooth transition.

alpha male

If Kevin was making plans on pushing his so called “alpha male” case wouldn’t he have done it by now.

I would suggest that the a bad host attracts bad callers, is it poor producing or just a reflection on the host. Napaer has an agenda and if he was honest about his agenda I’d respect him more. His I’m Mr independent and I call it like I see it is BS, when in the past he has I think taken shots at players that have reflected team thinking, ie calling Bobby Jackson out for not playing when he was hurt. Or even Kevin earlier when it turned out he had a broken hand.

I spend a lot of time with KNBR, Ralph I like, mostly because he will admit to his biases, ie he is mates with Don Nelson.

Well that and lets see what happens when everyone is healthy as having more talent on the team that would be really bad now wouldn’t it
