Seriously, though, from 3-10 in our lineup there’s not a lot of difference in ability. They could all make a case for starting or at least getting more PT.

Not sure about great bigs...but maybe solid shotblockers?

Teams like the Clipps, Nuggs, F*kers and Hawks all possess good shot blockers that do force most teams to try to win by the jumpshot. I think that’s what you’re saying, WW.

Not sure if Spence and JT can be as solid as those groups of bigs.

You don't think that was what the coach wanted him to do?

Stay home to help on LeBron, and make someone else beat us on the perimeter? Considering how the first half went and how the 2nd half went, I’m pretty sure that was what was discussed at the half.

Based on past events, if that wasn’t the plan and just Spencer fucking up. Wouldn’t PW have yanked him?

That is exactly what Cleveland wants

That is what makes them tough. If Spencer leaves the paint to go defend Z, it’s like an invitation to give the ball the LBJ and let him post or just take it to the hoop. You have to keep your bigs in against LeBron or he will just kill you. The fact that Z was hitting definitely opened it up more for LBJ and it was a no-win for Spencer and the Kings nomatter what decision he made.

I really can't mind losing...

To a team like the Cavs, with experience up and down the lineup and a possible destination in the NBA Finals.

Frankly, the Kings aren’t in the running for a championship this year, or probably even making the playoffs. Fighting the Cavs into OT when the young Kings were clearly outmatched is great for their future, and I like seeing it. The end result is frankly kinda irrelevant to the development and experience they had today.

winning would doesn’t give us the experience losing does. Losing allows us to carry that experience on and work harder to further develop as a team. A win wouldn’t have given us the determination to improve that a loss does.

The thing is

Depending on the personalities (and not saying our Kings will have this issue), is you can learn to lose just as easily as you learn to win. Getting two out of three on the road trip was a nice hurdle to overcome…I think winning these types of games at home is a hurdle as well.

I’m just not sure this team isn’t past the moral victory stage on their homecourt.

by otis29 on Dec 24, 2009 11:52 AM PST up reply actions

Good point about learning to lose

I do, wholeheartedly, think that this is just part of the process though and I’d rather have them learn this way, at this point in the rebuilding process.

Just a couple examples: I would like to think JT will not inbound a ball that way at the end of a quarter anymore, and I would like to think Reke will be looking for his teammates more at the end of games, or even call a TO if he’s being trapped next time.

To me, the only way of these guys learning about these situations is by experiencing them and maybe not succeding the first time. The now know the outcome of those type of decisions so hopefully they will approach them differently next time.

I heartedly agree

All season long PW set the starting rotation so that the opposing team would have to defend Tyreke with their PG. Then in the 4th with a close game, James starts defending Tyreke and PW runs iso plays to let Tyreke go 1 on 1 with James. I don’t understand, unles PW was turning the game into a learning experience or he’s just bought into the Tyreke is our closer.

JT was on Grant's show tonight

He said Spencer ruined the spacing by coming out to try and set a screen. That’s why you call the timeout. If your own players aren’t sure about running the play, the Cav’s don’t need time to set up their defense. We screw up our offense for them.

Odd seeing Casspi try to take on the Cavs’ bigs by himself TWICE in overtime. No worries though, we’ll win games like this next time.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

by JETisKing on Dec 23, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

Especially when we have four guys scoring well, plus Beno on the floor. I don’t know if it is inexperience or PW not exerting his will, but we should be more effective in crunch time than watching Tyreke dribble into a lane with five Cav’s waiting for him. I know it seems like he can accomplish the impossible, but I thought Omri, Spence, JT, as well as Tyreke were having good offensive games, it would have been nice to move the ball around.

by MichaelMack on Dec 24, 2009 12:26 AM PST up reply actions

Its funny

I don’t recall anyone singing this tune after the last few games when Tyreke did win the games running the high screen and roll just like we did in crunch time tonight. The sound is different tonight because it didn’t work, we did the same things both nights.

The Cavs put Lebron on Tyreke and Lebron kicked our ass on defense; the credit needs to go there.

I don’t see a lot of other options. We saw what happened when the ball was given to Casspi and he was asked to create, two disasterous forays into the paint. Getting the ball to JT would have been good, but we don’t have enough firepower to spread the floor well enough to make that happen easily. Sure, you can get the ball to JT 20ft from the basket with defensive help available, but is that going to be effective? And I’m not throwing those guys under the bus, they are doing great, I love their progress, but they aren’t polished NBA crunch-time scorers at this point. Casspi and JT will make open crunch time shots or obvious plays, but aren’t going to get points against great defense on their own yet.

PW is right, as these guys play together, the ball movement you guys want will happen more. But even experienced teams have trouble moving the ball against locked in defense. And you combine that with our lack of weapons, and we can’t be too surprised. There’s going to be more options when Kevin and Cisco come back. The Cavs aren’t going to be excited about putting 3 guys on the strong side and sagging in the weak side playing 5 on 3, when quick ball rotation is going to get the ball to Kevin Martin against their 2nd best perimeter defender, I promise.

Patience, its almost better Tyreke got devoured a little by Lebron; let’s him know in no uncertain terms he’s got growing to do.

Free Omri...trade.Noc.

if we were only talking about the last couple of plays. But, the Kings stopped playing team offense for the last 4 minutes or regulation. So, MM’s comment about PW not exerting his will may be valid to a point.

Certainly, one might think that Tyreke running to the bench, faking carrying big balls after making a big shot in the Bulls game, might have had an impact on how all the rookies played at the end of this game. Everyone dreams about making the game winner and the accolades that come with it.

PW probably thought Tyreke could beat James, or pass to the open guy. But, he did neither. Lesson learned.

We played team ball for 48 minutes...

I don’t know what that was in overtime.

Great frikken game overall. My wish of Spence and JT having dual good games finally came true. LOVED seeing ’Reke get respect and LeBron guarding him in the final 3 to 4 minutes. Awesome to see.

I’m impressed with the Cavs actually running what looked to be team offense in overtime. I think LeBron is a witness to Tyreke’s great talent.

So many great things by our team tonight. This was probably one of the most entertaining games this year despite the loss. Go Kings!

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

by JETisKing on Dec 23, 2009 9:56 PM PST reply actions

James gave Tyreke enough rope until he tied us up

Tyreke was trying to replicate his past game winning shots, while James had the seasoning to get his teammates involved and let them win the game. If Evans had passed out of the double team at the end of regulation, there might not have been any OT.

Hopefully, Tyreke & JT learned a valuable lesson, otherwise a monumental effort will be wasted.

But towards the end of the game he went cold and started to force things, kinda threw off our rhythm.

There's no difference if you're wide open.

Height has nothing to do with making a wide open shot. Nate Robinson will tell you that.

The Kings just didn’t run anything to get Beno open in such a manner.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

by JETisKing on Dec 23, 2009 10:12 PM PST up reply actions

Kings were picking and rolling for 10+ minutes

including Beno. It’s not necessarily running plays for them, but just using pentration and ball swings. Lebron was breaking his defender down, swinging the ball and they were finding Z. Exactly what happened down the stretch against the Bulls with Ime knocking those threes.

Today Lebron was not getting beaten by Evans to the hoop, therefore no help defense needed and no open 3’s

by thisismellow on Dec 23, 2009 10:15 PM PST up reply actions

True. The Cav's ball movement in OT was phenomenal.

I think the Kings could have demanded some double teams with some screens and hit them with a pick and pop with JT or Spence.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

by JETisKing on Dec 23, 2009 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

exactly

i thought the biggest problem with all the screens were that most of them were happening on one side of the court instead of in the middle of the court. limits the options a little IMO.

Maybe this was an issue with JT and Spence getting pushed to spots they didnt want to get to?

Apparently youre missing the point that guys like Z who can hit the 20 footer are unique in some ways

Not as much now as 10 years ago, but all teams need players who can defend close to the basket and other teams bigs usually are the best served to do that.

There is no way Beno provides the same kind of threat as Z does.

Kind of a historic effort. It’s the second time LeBron went for 30+, 15 boards, 10 assists. According to ESPN this morning, Charles Barkley and Larry Bird are the only other players in history to do that feat twice.

Hard to believe that people questioned this hire

And Westphal was unemployed for as long as he was. It’s kind of a perfect storm situation as this team needed a veteran coach that wasn’t burnt out and Westphal desperately needed somebody to give him another shot. I think this is going to be a very good match for a number of years. His rotational style is also great for this young club because they know they could be put in at any time and he will run with whoever is playing well. That is huge for a young team like this not to bury guys on the bench.

1996 also was a big FA money wise too

Some players got extensions, and others signed big deals. Michael Jordan signed a 1 yr 30 mil deal (and signed a 36 mil deal the next season—the largest ever in a single season—and you think that’s coincidence? It isn’t…), Gary Payton got a massive extension, Hakeem Olajuwon too, and Alonzo Mourning, Juwan Howard, and Shaq (of course) all signed deals with other teams. (Although in Howard’s case, he signed with Miami, had the contract voided because of some technical reason—I forget what it is now—and Washington ended up giving him what he got in Miami. Or something like that.)

Didn't get to see the game cause of work again

But from what I’ve read and the fact we even took them to overtime, I’m proud of this team. When you start a starting lineup that’s oldest guy is JT (and love that PW benched Noc, he’s been playing awful lately), and that lineup gets you into overtime against a team that has a legitimate chance to win the title and has the games best player, you’ve got to be proud.

In the end, the Kings probably would have won this game if Martin was here, and they will win games like this in the future, once they have more experience. And losing is where experience comes from.

He's a good shooter for a big guy

We did a great job at stopping the rest in the first half and LeBron got his. In the second, Mo woke up, and so did Z. That’s where we lost it. Just having a chance to win, and going to OT, with LeBron getting a triple double and Mo and Z hitting shots, is very encouraging.

Basically we took the Cavs best punch and got TKO'd in the 15th round is the way I look at it.

I don't think the Cavs could step up their defense

except to put James on our inexperienced PG.

The Cav’s were cutting back and forth through the paint and everyone was setting picks on offense. The Kings were running iso plays for Tyreke. Hawes and Tyreke on one side and everyone else standing around on the weak side. Both our bigs were out high, and no one was around the basket to rebound.

I guess they thought that Tyreke could beat James one on one. It almost worked but I thought it didn’t show alot of confidence in the other players. While James was willing to let other players win the game.

So true. +1, Aykis.

In the end, the Kings probably would have won this game if Martin was here, and they will win games like this in the future, once they have more experience. And losing is where experience comes from.

Notes from the box score for the starting lineup

Reke: 11/25, 28 pts, 3 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks

JT: 50% floor, 18pts, 9 boards

Spencer: 7/13, 17 pts, 12 boards, 3 blocks

Omri: 18 points, 6 boards, 50% from 3s

Donte: 4/6 floor, 10 pts

That’s pretty impressive IMO

Yes

Starting has been wearing on him, in terms of the minutes. I totally agree with that. I wouldn’t mind him moving back to the bench and bringing that fire with the second unit. At the same time, I love what he’s bringing to the table. Maybe coahc should limit his minutes a bit.

Good point

I can only remember James getting to the basket a couple of time. One on a fast break and the other on an alley oop.

It was a great game, the Kings could be the next Western conference powerhouse after the lakers start declining. I am picturing the 2014 NBA finals, the cavs v the kings. With the teams being led by Lebron and Tyreke who finished 1st and 2nd (hopefully in that order) in mvp voting. Cavs win in 7.

Meanwhile back to the present, Tyreke is one of the best young players in the league, he has to be leading candidate for rookie of the year. The fact that we moved Lebron over to guard Tyreke is a sign of respect for him and says a lot about how good he is. Sure, it won us the game but the expierience Tyreke gained will be invaluable for his development.

by CavsLebronFan on Dec 23, 2009 11:15 PM PST reply actions

Great game.

Would have been nice to win but it shows we can compete with one of the best teams in the league.

I actually thought our play tonight was the best of the season. We played great, they played great + they have Lebron = Cavs win.

The no call timeout at the end of the game and “T” were as bad as any of the player mistakes. The team lost as a unit as they should.

If we can play that way against the Lakers I will be sttoked.

And to think...

…This team isn’t even full strength yet.

by CloudyEyes on Dec 24, 2009 12:22 AM PST reply actions

Great game

It would have been better with a win, but we took one of the league’s best teams to OT. It’s easy to remember some of what we didn’t do or mistakes we made like the JT pass at the end of third quarter, but there were a lot of positives. I thought Spencer for one played a whale of a game. Let’s get the Lakers.

Saw chunks of the replay

From what I saw, I agree that this was Spence’s best game of the year, maybe even winning him the game ball if we had won. Yeah, ’Reke and Omri went a little Beno at times and tried to do too much but overall I thought it was a really good team game.

After watching I was left with this thought: LBJ has to stay in Cleveland. He is so dominating, such a strong player that I really can’t see pairing him up with another super star. I think it makes more sense for him to insist that the FO upgrades his supporting cast rather than move to anther team and have to share the glory, the ball and the spotlight.

LeBron has been talked about lot in this thread, so I'll pile on my thoughts.

The Cavs will hopefully resign him, but need to continue to surround him with outside shooters. Bringing in Shaq was a huge mistake as he just clogs up the lane. Z has been getting more and more play lately as a result. They will let both Z and Shaq go this offseason and would be a nice pairing with Mehmet Okur as he brings a nice outside game that would work well with LBJ. I don’t see many of these guys going anywhere except Boozer and Bosh as they are both miserable where they are at. Wade and LeBron won’t have much incentive to play in New Jersey or NY for craptastically bad teams unless the money is just that much better.

After tonight Tyreke leads all rookies in scoring and is #13 in the league at 20.4

Rookies.

Jennings is down to 19.7 and Casspi is #5 at 11.7

But he’ll back. The kid has the “goods”. He’s not Tyreke Evans, but would you expect that?

Yeah, he's struggling a bit right now. Shot is really off.

I expect him to end up in the 19 point, 6 assist range by season’s end. Which is pretty excellent.
