With the 1st Pick in the 2009 Draft, the Kings select....

I've been curious about this for a few weeks now, so I figured I would post a poll and find the answer.  Everyone in Sacramento is absolutely in love with Tyreke Evans.  However, Brandon Jennings is looking pretty damn good as well.  And of course let's not forget Blake Griffin, and just for the hell of it, Ricky Rubio.

I've included the top 10 picks of our community draft board.  Our picks are actually looking pretty solid, except for the glaring omission of Johnny Flynn in the top 10.  However, these picks were made before a lot of the workouts and information gathering occurred.

Sactown Royalty's Community Draft Board '09:

1. Blake Griffin

1. Ricky Rubio

3. Brandon Jennings

4. Tyreke Evans

5. Hasheem Thabeet

6. Stephen Curry

7. Ty Lawson

8. James Harden

9. Jrue Holiday

10. Demar DeRozan

So...Let's wind back the clock and pretend we miraculously won the Draft Lottery.  Knowing what you know now, who would you select as the #1 Overall choice?

Poll
With the first pick in the 2009 draft, the Sacramento Kings select...

Blake Griffin

You can’t assume he blows out his knee, and without that assumption, you gotta take Blake.
That said, I’d take Tyreke without hesitation.

when you look back at

"When talent is roughly equal," said Westphal, "the competitive guys win. You have to have that in this league. Here's a perfect example: We (the Phoenix Suns) drafted Tim Perry and Dan Majerle the same year (1988). Now, if you get a stopwatch for down and back (baseline to baseline sprint), Tim Perry was faster than Dan Majerle. That's a fact. But if you had them race, Dan Majerle won. I can't explain it. Somehow, he had that drive, that fire, something inside him. If you have enough guys like that, your team starts winning again."

I hesitantly voted Evans because the known is too good to pass up.

Secondarily, if BGriffin is the choice than in this strong PG draft – if the Kings don’t trade down (?#31 and #23 for Ty Lawson? Maynor?) than this season looks vastly different.

The Kings played the future and the strength of the draft, which was point guards. This upcoming lottery it is big men, but the #1 pick will possibly be a point guard (JWall). It would be counter intuitive to expect the Kings to get the #1 pick, so a big man will be available in June.

Lastly, Evans is the favorite at this time to be the RoY with “LeBron like numbers”. It is easier to find a high level power forward than a point guard. Therefore; the choice is Evans.

by betweentheeyes on Dec 5, 2009 9:34 PM PST up reply actions

I think it's hard to find franchise players

I have no doubt Evans can be that. I do have my doubt that Griffin could be.

by betweentheeyes on Dec 5, 2009 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

It was funny

A few weeks ago I was reading something by Chad Ford on draft night that struck me as a bit funny:

I thought the Kings ultimately would do the right thing and take Rubio, but instead they take Evans. He’s not a point guard. But he’s a physical combo guard who knows how to get to the rim. He can’t shoot much and isn’t super athletic, but he’s big and strong and he’ll make an impact right away. This was a short-term pick. It will look good early, but I wonder how it will look in five years.

Funny how Ford got it right that he’ll make an impact right away. He just didn’t think that Evans would like a near All-Star so early on. LOL

faux augury

I would say he should stick to his day job – but I am not impressed with that.

At least he got the impress early part right. Does he think Tyreke won’t improve? I can’t figure out his logic on this.

by betweentheeyes on Dec 5, 2009 10:40 PM PST up reply actions

I can't either actually

I did laugh reading that at the time. How does a player improve more over time than another player? Ford is a pundit, and he almost certainly got this wrong. Oh well….. LOL

He really doesn’t. Ford believes that Rubio will be a great star in the NBA. Jerry Reynolds and the Kings basketball staff believe Tyreke Evans will be. I’ll take the Kings staff every time even if I curse them out on draft day.

I think Griffin will get more votes after that. I also think JT and Hawes’ relatively strong play has stopped the clamoring for a big a bit.
But I definitely want to gauge this more as the season progresses and we see Griffin (and KMart) back.

Rubio, then Jennings before

Voted Rubio because of what seems to be his solid play making skills and defense and voted Jennings for his pure offensive game. Jennings had the look, to become a great player, too, while making headlines since high school.

…But knowing what I know now, I’d hands down take Evans. I was REALLY concerned that Evans’ game was one dimensional and haven’t really seen him play before the draft. …But it looks like Evans is going to be the total package here. He’s already years and years ahead of most players in this league, in terms of his development on offense AND defense. It’s mind-boggling to wonder what Tyreke will be averaging 3 years from now and how developed his game will be.

Just for fun.. a quote... lol

“Tyreke Evans is not OKAY. This does not make sense. You take a SG in a PG heavy draft? Uh, yeah, no.

What does Evans do? He’s big? Yes, I know. Was Evans that impressive? I mean, you’re running out a team that was born to run pick & rolls and the open court, and you take Tyreke Evans?

This makes little sense.

Unless the Kings may not know something I don’t.

But, I don’t subscribe to the BPA argument with this draft. There is too many things wrong with everyone.

I do think it’s telling that Rubio is on the Wolves and not the Kings. Especially when the Wolves didn’t trade to get up to Rubio.

Which only makes me wonder what was wrong with Jonny Flynn.

I ask again? What makes Tyreke Evans so great? Geoff Petrie thinks so?

Dude needs to retire if he’s going to make bullshit picks like this."
