To be fair...

both #5(especially was phatom) and #6(Songaila running sideways and out of position) offensive calls were just downright STUPID by the officiating crew. It’s just ridiculous some of the calls they feel inclined to throw out his way.

The Jersey pull on Songaila was really dumb.

He’s not pushing the explosion through the lane thing. He played very laid back tonight. We’re probably lucky we played him tonight instead of in a month.

Then again, Tyreke will probably be putting up really scary numbers in a month.

I'll go for it

Though I know I wasn’t asked. I don’t think there’s a need to change much. We were still in the game in the last minute. Noce hits his FTs and we go to OT. The Kings hit their FTs throughout the game and we win. I think it’s simple like that.

The decision to start Donte at the 2 did not have an effect in the outcome of the game. IMO we are doing a great job at staying in games that sometimes we have no business keeping close. I think we’re just fine. But that’s me.

I think you ask fair questions

but there are tens of fair questions to ask about games. There’s a lot of what ifs in a particular game. I just look at the overall play and things that clearly and directly affected the outcome.

I have much respect for your insight HT, but I agree I don’t see the need to question the coaching decisions after every loss. I’m sure there’s thing that could’ve been different but then again, we had a chance to win it, so I don’t have much to question.

Let me ask you something: do you think that we have missed out on some wins because of some of these coaching decisions?

Godfather of the "nice ass" movement.... the future begins now...

by edm7 on Dec 8, 2009 9:22 PM PST up reply actions

None that I'm certain of, but how could I be.

I must admit that I’m a traditionalist when it comes to PT. Unless there is a decided advantage, I like players to play their natural positions, to maintain continuity in team & help defense. There have been times when more than one player went to double because they got confused. And, players have lost their man and we ended up with two players on one man and he didn’t even have the ball.

I also believe in having your best 5 players on the floor at the end of close games. Which doesn’t alway lend itself to PW’s, going with his gut style. I thought that playing Mason in the 4th quarter of some of the early games was a mistake. I also thought that PW tried to match up with what the opposing coach had on the floor, rather than force them to match his line up. But, these are just part of the learning curve for the coaches and the players. And, I don’t have many complaints about PW’s decisions. Nor, do I believe I’m a 100% correct and PW is 100% wrong. It’s just not how I would have done it, with a young team that needs to win with offense, while they are learning how to play defense.

But, like Pookey in his post above, I too would have liked to see what Donte could have done against West. As well as with Beasley in the Miami game. There really wasn’t a problem playing a backcourt of Tyreke & Beno in either game. Neither team had an advantage against Tyreke & Beno, or Sergio & Tyreke for that matter. And, although we might enjoy Tyreke going up against the other teams star, it wasn’t the deciding factor of the games.

Plus if Donte could have helped on the frontline, JT might have been around for the end of the game. I know, Pookey, IF’s & Conjecture. But, ed did ask what I thought.

"If you don't have anything good to say, LIE" - Mom

by HighTops on Dec 8, 2009 10:00 PM PST up reply actions

Your point about having your 5 best players is worthwhile and I agree

But is that your 5 best players overall or your 5 best players at the time? I’m not sure Donte would have been a better bet than Noc at the end of the game. Especially if you ask him to hit 2 FT’s to tie the game.

I’d rather have Noc miss because at least you know he’ll shrug that off. I’m not sure Donte would.

Who are the 5 best? Good question.

If your talking about tonights game, JT messed that up by getting himself thrown out again. But, to answer your question. I don’t know. Sad ha!

I guess after JT got ejected. I would have gone with Beno at 2, Tyreke at 1, Noc at 3, Donte at 4, and Spencer at 5.

One thing I was surprised about, was the starters returning to start the 2nd half. After how badly the starters played in the 1st half, and how well the reserves played to get us back in the game in the 2nd quarter, I expected PW to have a different line up starting the 2nd half.

Yep JT fouling out was a negative on his game tonight

That’s an interesting point about the reserves starting the 3rd qtr. I thought the real problem was the early 4th where the Kings let the Hornets back in when they were up 7. That was with the reserves on the court too.

JT, Thomas, Udoka, Beno & Sergio started the 4th

After JT got his 4th foul at 10:00 mark of the period, Noc came in for JT and made a jumper to put the Kings up 76-69. Noc was the only starter on the court then. And, the Kings started the quarter 1 up.

With 7:20 left Tyreke replaced Sergio, & Thompson replaced Udoka, and the KIngs still had a 1pt lead. So, yes the reserves did lose the 7pt lead, but they we’re also the ones that built up the lead.

2 minutes later JT got his 5 foul, and that’s when the Hornets started to take hold of the game.

by HighTops on Dec 9, 2009 12:15 PM PST up reply actions

That's fair HT

and I believe that yes, some things could’ve and maybe should’ve been different (like the Mason situation for example).

I look at it this way: the Kings are 9-11 and playing well. I think they are exceding the expectations of most people here, not just in record but also in the way that they’ve been playing. If those things would’ve been different, if Westphal would’ve done some of the things you suggest, we maybe would’ve won more games so our record would be something like 12-8. Is this really a 12-8 team? Do you really think that this team had a chance of winning 12 of 20?

Now, this doesn’t mean that I wouldn;t want to be 12-8, I just think it is unrealistic to expect a coach in his first year and with these young of a team to do everything right in the first 20 games as to achieve that type of record. We’re already overachieving in a way because of the coaching staff, so questioning little details to me sound a bit like questioning why we haven’t done everything perfect, because that’s the only way this team could have a winning record.

I know this sounds a bit pessimistic but it’s just the reality of the situation, at least to me. We’re playing well and I couldn’t be happier, and that’s enough for me right now. Maybe it’s more of a personal preference but I don’t think I’m too off on my expectations.

Godfather of the "nice ass" movement.... the future begins now...

by edm7 on Dec 8, 2009 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

The team was on a little run

in the fourth quarter, and JT had just scored a couple of buckets on nice feeds from Sergio and seemed to be finding his rhythm. So Westphal takes him out for Kenny, and moments later a seven-point lead is a six-point deficit.

Who knows what happens if he leaves him in. Maybe he picks up those three late fouls anyway and we lose no matter who Westphal puts on the floor.

The other night, the roles were reversed. Kenny Thomas was playing out of his frickin’ gourd and Westphal takes him out.. Puzzling.

Forgot to add

A few years ago David Carr was a record-setting quarterback for Fresno State. The team was 8-0 and was at the five yard line needing a TD in the closing minutes to win.

It was third and goal after two running plays, and the coach, Pat Hill, called a draw play that was stuffed. They went for it on fourth down, and Carr threw an incompletion. All of this led to the quip, “The only coach who can stop David Carr is Pat Hill.”

I don’t want Westphal to stop our players when they have it going, and I’ve already seen a few instances where he seems to have done just that. If Casspi or Donte or Sergio are on fire, keep them in there until the flame starts to cool. If Tyreke or Nocioni or JT don’t have it, let them watch someone who is playing better that night.

No arguement here

My comments aren’t meant to enlighten the coaching staff or to show off my superior intellect (note sarcasm). I have a lot of respect for the basketball knowledge of the posters here at STr. Even Pookey, tho I don’t know why.

I watch the games and see what I believe are mistakes in coverage, help defense, in the flow of the offense. And, I can understand that these are expected on a young inexperienced team. I see flaws in individual talent and weaknesses too. And, I believe that the players will adjust and compensate for these flaws and weaknesses eventually. I see choices made by PW, and sometimes I don’t understand why he made his decision.

Now, I can’t ask PW why he does what he does, and I don’t see what the players are doing in practice to improve their game. I guess I could sit back and just enjoy the games for what they are. But, my inquiring mind wants to know if I’m totally off base with my own assessments. So, I come here. To the fountain of true basketball wisdom. I put myself out on a limb, state what I think and why I believe it. And, I ask my fellow posters to tell me if I’m an idiot or somewhere close to knowing what I’m talking about. And, if they tell me I’m an idiot, and are kind enough to explain why, than I’m happy because I learned something new and can enjoy the games better than I did when I started. Unless Pookey tells me I’m an idiot, and then I know I was dead nuts right on with my comment.

I appreciate that you don't have any more insight into the mind of PW than I do

But, that’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking “If you were the coach, what would you have done?”. Which is probably just as difficult to answer. But, we have opinions on just about everything else from GP’s drafts & trades, to the Maloofs spending and influence in team decisions, to players skills & PT. So, why not rotations.

I must apologize, after reviewing the game last night

it seems that PW did play Donte at the 3 for 3minutes at the end of the 3rd quarter. PW subed Beno for Noc, and Donte moved to the 3. He had just made a 3pt shot prior, but didn’t score from the 3. He did get a rebound and an assist in 3 minutes as the SF. Unfortuneately, he didn’t see any more PT until 1sec left in the game.

My only excuse for this oversight was that Mrs. Tops was sick with a cold, and I was making her some chicken soup at the end of the 3rd quarter, and missed the switch.

We had to put up with that stupid open mouth pick of JT all last season and now just a broken pic icon for Tyreke. They suck.

Just finished watching the game

and the natting recording stopped right before Noce’s FTs. Too nad he missed the first one. FTs are becoming a big problem and at this point is probably as much of a mental thing.

Man, Reke is good… like really good. I kept yelling superstar! superstar! for the last 2 minutes of the game. Dude put the whole team on his back and almost stole the game for us. He’s special and like V said on the game thread, we have him for the next 15 years (I think it was V).

I know it’s another tough loss but I like what I’m seeing for he most part. This was a tough stretch and we are staying in games. I know we all want to win but we are still long ways from being a consistent good team. It’s been a while but this team makes me happy; win or lose these guys are putting a smile in my face. I, personally, don’t ask for more

He can get his shot in the clutch

which would double the number of players we have that can do that.

He also knows that if there are two seconds left on the shot clock and the ball is in your hands, you shoot. He also makes the shot.

Little things add up to wins, and David West can give you the obvious stuff (scoring) and the intangibles.

West is a better scorer and get his shot any time he wants it. JT is not there yet.

Besides, this doesn’t have to be a JT vs. West thread. I’m just saying David West could help the Kings and give them a second reliable scoring option that they currently lack. And when Kevin comes back, make that three concistent scorers, and two who can get their shot in crunch time.

nobody is bashing on nocioni! what an awful game, he was so infuriating. he was definitely a dark hole on offense at times, it just seemed like he thought he was the first option on offense, with those regrettable failed drives. it was crystal clear that the guards were doing very well, along with a third of the frountcourt (JT), and yet he still felt the need to jack up threes and contested jumpers. and dont even get me started on the last sequence of the game, huge fail on nocioni’s part. two missed free throws! unexcusable for a 80 percent ft career shooter. nocioni fail! its times like these that i fear casspi missing another game, i defintely feel that we wouldve won the game if he had played.

You need to work on your comments - think spacing, punctuation etc.

But yes, Noce has had a couple of bad games and Casspi wasn’t available at the last minute – thems the breaks.

I read that the Blazers have lost Rudy to some sort of back problem and are down to like 9 healthy players. Yikes!

LeBron had 20.9 pts

5.9 assists, 5.5 boards, and 1.6 steals (3.5 TO’s) his rookie year. Tyreke has a ways to go, but, still, it’s nice you can even make a comparison.

Another point one might make is that Tyreke has better teammates than LeBron did that year too.

I think like it is for other stars

with Reke it is more than just numbers. The way he took over the game in the end was simply special.

And something that hasn’t being mentioned that much is that at no point does it seems like he’s dominating the ball way too much. He forces things sometimes but by just watching the games you can’t tell he’s putting up these numbers. Again, that’s special

Godfather of the "nice ass" movement.... the future begins now...

by edm7 on Dec 8, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

No what's special is that Paul Westphal is trying to reduce his load

And Tyreke is simply saying give me more. That’s what I find so awesome.

Never?

I recall Martin winning a couple of games last year, and there was that playoff game against the Spurs.

No doubt, Evans has the chance to be something special, the kind of guy that eventually may rip the hearts out of opponents. I’m not sure why that has to include dissing Kevin Martin, but whatever.

Oh, and if Martin called a timeout, then the pump fake and airball wouldn’t count, and it would make sense that there was no foul call.. Just sayin.’

By the way

for all you ESPN highlight lovers. The Kings game was the one with the shortest highlights on NBA Fastbreak and all they showed was Reke’s fall, Songaila’s last basket and Noce missing the second FT, that was it. No more highlights for a close game in which our young guy took over in the end.

Ohh yeah, we’re getting respect alright, can’t wait to make it there for another 10 seconds.

Everybody happy with Noce and Spencer? Noce’s line speaks for itself, Spencer’s line was wonderfully mediocre…but his defense is….well…this game and the last game…how many people are going to go back door on him before he notices…there’s a joke in there somewhere, but I’m not clever enough to think of one right now…

Whatup from a Hornets fan.

Howdy Sacto. Great game tonight. You guys always play us hard which would have been a better compliment when NO was better. As far as your D West vs. J.T. question, I think D West is obviously a better player right now and J.T. is obviously a better future bet. I say obviously even though J.T.’s year has started better because I believe West well get back to his usual numbers before the end of the year. He has taken some time getting used to palying with another big, and they are finally getting comfortable.

I don’t see either one matched up well next to Spencer Hawes, although J.T. would be prett beastly next to Okafor, since Meka could provid the post D and allow J.T. to play pick and roll d, get weakside blocks and not pick up fouls.

I still think K Mart for West isa fair deal though it would require us getting another big from somewhere. Even if that trade goes down I see as there is anyway we can pry J.T. from you guys with anythign less than 2 first rounders and even then it doesnt happen.

by jdpourciau on Dec 8, 2009 11:41 PM PST reply actions

Oh I forgot

This gets to an interesting question for you guys. How do you see yourselves. Are you in the OKC from 2 years ago mold just now putting in the peices with talented youngins, or do you consider yourselves more like the Blazers from 2 years ago in the playoff picture right now, and maybe willing to make a big move if it makes you a contender.

by jdpourciau on Dec 8, 2009 11:43 PM PST reply actions

I think it depends on multiple variables

Those variables would include how much better the rest of this team is as the year gets along around Tyreke. The other variable is probably how good and/or how great the player the Kings get in the 2010 draft is.

If we can learn to close out games

We can be a playoff contender this year. If not, we’ll be a playoff contender when we do learn how.

Tyreke is not used to losing, and he’s a pretty special rookie, so I think he might get us over that hump.

But he’s going to need some help. The Kings are 3-5 when Tyreke leads them in scoring since Kevin went down, 5-2 when someone else leads in scoring. Those wins came in games where JT (twice), Donte, Beno or Sergio led the way.
