I might need a late pass...

But the name “Shock” has transcended from StR into the mainstream? That’s dope.

the whole “Shock and Hawes” thing dies an inglorious death.

Sadly

this has probably been my one big worry about an Amare trade.

However, we could have the Three S’s: Speed, STAT, Shock/Spence. Or even better, a Spanish bent on it: The Three Esés

Amare is not going to be traded to a West Conference Rival . Peroid

The Suns appear intent on not sending Stoudemire (who can opt out in 2010) to a Western Conference rival. Thus, Chicago (because of the ’90s Bulls relationship between general managers Steve Kerr and John Paxson) and Detroit (which would surrender Rasheed Wallace and his expiring contract) are considered the front-runners."

Lets consider something more realistic.

by nothingbutnet on Feb 11, 2009 6:08 PM PST up reply actions

More realistic than what?

Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown?

Shaq for Shawn Marion?

What’s realistic is what actually happens. Until then it is all conjecture, so why not talk about it? Sure beats talking about the actual games.

I agree

I like both a lot, but Shock has the fire.

by melee on Feb 11, 2009 12:12 PM PST reply actions

Neither

Neither is worth Amare. He can’t be the superstar of your team and our guys have too much potential. Shock is basically a younger version of Amare without the past knee problem and Hawes has the potential to be both a floor leader and a uniquely skilled offensive big man.

Amare – SSOL – Nash = 27 yr old JT = Don’t do it Geoff!

by Doubl3Dos3 on Feb 11, 2009 12:23 PM PST reply actions

Agreed

I’ll go with that. Both guys are young and learning. Why risk that bright future on Amare?

by jacquetbg on Feb 11, 2009 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

Ridiculous

Amare at age 22: 80 starts 26 ppg 9 rebs. I like Shock and I think he has good upside, but saying that Shock is a young Amare is a little too much. I feel like there is very little chance that Shock will ever be as good as Amare was when he was 22. Defensively he could come close, tho.

Hawes, I think, has a lower ceiling than Shock.

by DustyG on Feb 11, 2009 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe not...

You’re right about Shock never being a young Amare….but is his upside better than the Amare of today? What would we get with Amare compared to what we have with Shock? Amare would probably be gone as soon as his contract is done.

by jacquetbg on Feb 11, 2009 4:23 PM PST up reply actions

I really don't think so...

To alot of people who know alot about basketball he’s never been thought of by as having anywhere near that much upside. It’s just us homers who think he is an allstar in the making. And I’m no expert, but I don’t feel that JTs upside is close to what Amare is now.

by DustyG on Feb 11, 2009 5:11 PM PST up reply actions

spence will never be close to amare, bring amare here, move him to C, with JT at PF. veryy nice

by David24 on Feb 11, 2009 12:27 PM PST reply actions

Different type of player

Shock is much closer to the type of player Amare is. Why do we need two?
Spence hits outside shots and passes the ball extremely well which are two thinks the Kings need and Amare can’t do.

by Doubl3Dos3 on Feb 11, 2009 12:36 PM PST up reply actions

Keep in mind

Shock used to play guard so he has ballhandling/passing skills. Plus, he’ll complement Amare defensively way more than Hawes

maybe never the scorer

I think Spencer will be better defensively and have a wider range of offensive skills. You are probably right that he will not likely ever have the 25+/gm scoring potential that Amare does.

We lack team defense hence we are classified as the worst defensive team in the league. Amare doesn’t help this situation.

scarily enough, from the same chat...

"How good can Jason Thompson be? "

Thorpe: "Good for sure. Not sure if he can be great. "

by sactoreg on Feb 11, 2009 12:36 PM PST reply actions

To be fair...

Those two statements can both be true.

Thorpe may feel that JT is going to be better than Spencer, and that neither will be “great”.

He wouldn’t be the first person with that opinion, and if he’s right then trading one of them for an established “great” player (Amare or otherwise) would be a coup for GP & Levien.

To stretch the analogy a bit . . . .like they say in baseball, “there is no such thing as a pitching prospect”.

by smgmatt on Feb 11, 2009 12:40 PM PST up reply actions

note to Thorpe: don't comment on potential of KMart's teammates

Same rule applies to you as applies to KMart’s Mom, Dad, Uncles, girlfriends. When you are a perceived confidante of one player, you don’t give public evaluations of that player’s teammates unless it is wild praise. O/w it looks like KMart is judging and critiquing his teammates and that’s not cool.

it's a biggie to JT, and I couldn't blame him if he assumes KMart shares Thorpe's view

which breeds resentment

Yes, Thorpe has other clients – but he is associated 99% with KMart, 1% with Haslem and 0% with everyone else.

Thought this was interesting (even though it had nothing to do with Shock or Hawes or Speed)
Laura (Austin, TX): Hi Coach Thorpe, I was just wondering if you would ever consider a position in the NBA as a Head Coach? It seems clear that you know how to get players to trust and listen to you, and you are great at helping them get better. Coaches have been hired with far less experience at coaching pro’s than you.

SportsNation David Thorpe: Thanks Laura, and yes, I do think that I’ll be in a position to accept a job like that. But no, it will not happen for at least 11 more years. I have one chance to be a great dad, and being a head coach would mean that I’d lose that chance. For me anyway. After that it’s still unlikely, my wife deserves better than to have us together just for the summers.

as captain of the team Kev needs to demand that all rookies see Thorpe in the offseason.

Actually, it could become an all Kings players thing with Levien in the front office. His two clients (Martin, Deng) both train under him

So...

if all of Levien’s clients go to Thorpe, and Levien is our Assistant GM is it possible that the Kings could be sending more guys to him in the summer? I would love that.
