More good than bad.

We had some great playoff years and Petrie was a big factor. We could should have been champions in 2002. That’s more than enough for me to vote positively about him. We all know he has a terrific percentage in drafting good players. His ability to judge talent and potential is high.

The darkest moments of his career imo is obviously the Webber trade and signing Mikki Moore. I’d put Beno in that list too but I don’t think there was any other decent PG available at that time. He didn’t have much of a choice given that Beno had a good 2nd half last season.

I trust Petrie and the next couple of years will be the biggest challenge of his career.

PS. Don’t forget that Douby is a summer camp legend

Chose 75%

We’ve seen him at his best, and now we’re seeing him at his worst, and frankly, being that his “worst” reflects the current cycle of the team, rather than any particularly bad choices by him.

While I’ve long been skeptical of his judgment towards handing out contracts, that facet of his GM game only makes up roughly 25% of his overall job description (IMO). Because he is not a 100% hitter, and no one expects him to be, one should expect a downward cycle every few years (as he has even alluded to/ warned). See L*kers 2005.

I’m sure it doesn’t help having owners that interfere or think that changing up your lineup is as easily done as in NBA Live 06. Owners that jump on trendy bandwagons such as “Defense wins Championships” when your already a good defensive team (but masked by the fact that the offense was great) allows me to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I agree

I liked most of Geoff’s trades and draft pick however, disagreed with the Beno signing, Webber trade and also thank goodness that Bonzi Wells and the infamous William Phillips turned that offer down.

My 75% can either go up to 100 or down to 50 based on this year’s trade deadline. If he can put this team in position this summer to be free agent spenders, I’l be pleased.

BOOK IT!

Ouch.

I had wiped that offer from my memory. Two amazing things there. Petrie may have been dumb enough to make that offer, but Bonzi was dumb enough to turn it down.

Yeah, I was pessimistic at the time, and it’s turned out worse than I would have imagined. I think it was a monumental waste of money. I’m for getting a good point guard and signing the Anthony Johonsons of the world for 2-3 million per year as backups.

In Geoff I Trust - 100%

It’s easy to say you love and trust your GM when the going is good. True belief in an individual’s ability goes beyond the last 5 minutes. Obviously, people can change. Bad streaks can happen. But we’ve all said that re-building is a process. It is not immediate, and it is not perfect. But I still believe that we will return to contention within another couple of seasons, and that GP will have been the architect of the return to glory.

Levien??

I went with 75%, namely due to GP’s drafting ability. His recent free agent signings have been a bit suspect though, and Kenny’s still on the books.

But overall, your point still stands. I’m actually pretty excited that Petrie is going to have both a high-lottery pick and available cap space for the first time in many years.

I'm 50/50

As far as draft picks go…I give most credit to the Kings’ scouts, not just Petrie.

I give Petrie the most credit in terms of re-signing players, FAs, and trades. There have been some great trades and signings in the past. …But as of recently, it’s about 40/60, imho.

by CloudyEyes on Feb 12, 2009 5:03 PM PST reply actions

50%

I’m gonna take the post Webber trade era into account for my vote. Because I really loathe Mikki Moore and the Beno signing was not excusable. If Geoff signed Beno only because he thought we would be competitive this season, that’s on him too. I like the Thompson and Hawes picks, K-Mart obviously, Garcia so-so. The Douby pick was atrocious. Theus and Natt suck too. Maybe I’m being a little irrational, but the Beno signing is just such a heavy factor for me here.

by discocricket on Feb 12, 2009 6:00 PM PST reply actions

Agreed

Petrie wasn’t really in any competition at all with any other team over signing Beno. He was, at a point, in competition with the Clippers, but that was before they signed Baron Davis. I agree Beno should have been re-signed, but he offered way more than what my max offer would have been, had I been in Petrie’s shoes.

As for Garcia, I was saying Petrie should have waited till the end of the season to re-sign Garcia, since we already had Salmons signed long term. By doing that, Garcia would have been able to prove himself. …Unfortunately Petrie pulls the gun on yet another MLE.

Moore’s contract was gawful…absolutely no excuse for that one, especially when Petrie was again not in any real competition with other GMs over him.

The only things I’ll give Petrie credit for is trading off Artest/Bibby. Those had to be done.. I’d say we got fair value at the time for them. The re-signing of Martin was also nicely done. a 20 to 25ppg scorer at $10 mil per season is a bargain.

I didn't vote

I thought “he’s burned through his good will” didn’t really capture my sentiments, although I guess i’d be in the 50-60 percent camp at first thought. I think if you grade his major moves they’d generally be in the 80s or above in the early years and sub-50 on average for past 4-5 years with a few exceptions. I have a pared down list of his major moves and might post that with some analysis/ratings at some point.

Ya know...

the whole situation is kind of fucked up. There are numerous problems with the way this team has been built. Geoff occasionally appears inactive and too patient, this is true. But, there are other problems too. We are still feeling the effects of Webber’s injury. He got a huge contract, went down, and was traded. We’re still feeling the effects of that with Kenny Thomas’ contract. Plus, there has been way too much Maloof intervention, namely in acquiring Ron Artest, the firing of Rick Adelman, and the subsequent coaching searches. That has all led to the mess we’re in. What worries me more than Geoff’s abilities as GM is the fact that a lot of our young talent is being wasted because we don’t have a coach that’s really going to help these guys develop. Coachie is a start but we need a head coach who can do something as well.

Hmm...

If I was to vote for 0%, my reasoning wouldn’t be that we are at 11-43 right now, but rather that we weren’t two years ago. Futility has to happen, otherwise the rebuild doesn’t work. The fact that it had to happen at this point and not quite a lot earlier, I blame on Petrie.
