Obvious take- Amare to Miami is dead
also, Bmiller may be Cleveland’s to lose now. It’s not everyday they can have a shot at two slow, unathletic centers.

The market for Miller isn’t that big, you know. Miami was clearly the top suitor.
Two other potential Kings impacts: Both teams should want Salmons (to Miami for Haslem?, to Toronto for Parker and a pick?), and the Boozer sweepstakes is down one team.

Neither of those trades is very good, with the Toronto deal slightly better than terrible.

Something tells me
This trading deadline is going to pass with a whimper for the Kings.
The only reason you’d trade Salmons for expirings is if you can clear Brad and KT. Brad is injured, Miami was the most logical place and they’re going with O’Neal……. not good at all. given the morose state of the franchise I think this puts a lot of pressure on the front office to go all-in on Amare.

Wow
Well leave it to Colangelo to make a deal nobody saw coming. I’m guessing if the Raptors deal fell through, B52 would have been next on the list for Miami.
That’s a tough decision actually. Would you rather want O’Neal or Miller? Moon is probably better than what filler we would have had to offer.

Except Miami, the best suitor for Brad were the Bulls I think. But Noah and Tyrus have been playing very well lately so it doesn’t seem much possible anymore.
If Brad’s not traded, I think he’ll find a way somehow to shut himself down for the last 20 games or so.

Amare
You know, looking at how this affects things, I think our chances of landing Amare just ticked up a substantial notch. Both Toronto and Miami, and especially Miami, were plausible landing places for Amare, but this deal negates that.
That would seem to leave Chicago as a possible landing place, but that would necessitate Phoenix taking back Hughes, which I don’t think Phoenix would want to do.
It really leaves Detroit (Sheed + Amir), Portland (LaFrentz + ?), and us (Moore, BJax, Hawes/Thompson). I actually think the Kings have a pretty decent shot now.
by nbrans on Feb 13, 2009 10:55 AM PST reply actions 0 recs

You’re forgetting them. They could take Amar’e AND Shaq as pookey has pointed out so many times.
by Aykis16 on Feb 13, 2009 11:01 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Although again
I don’t know that Phoenix would give up Shaq for the NYK pu pu platter, and then it becomes a question of whether New York would take on Barbosa. I don’t think they would.
Marbury’s expiring is a little unwieldy to make a Phoenix/NYK trade happen.
by nbrans on Feb 13, 2009 11:06 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Ok well lets say NYK is out
which I don’t think they are.
If you were PHX and you saw the options were Detroit, with Sheed + Amir Johnson, Portland with LaFrentz + Aldrige OR Bayless or Sacramento with what you put, I probably wouldn’t go for the Kings unless they offered JT. And thats not going to happen. Knock on wood.

Only way I see Phoenix going through with this
is if we include Thompson and our 1st round draft pick.
The question is: would that be a good trade for us?
I’m ambivalent – this team has so many holes, we really need more than just one player.
Making this trade a success would necessitate Hawes becoming a successful starter – meaning the center and both forward positions would be filled for the foreseeable future (Hawes, Amare, and Martin).
However, we still would need to fill in both guard spots – and with little cap space our only hope to fill those positions with decent players would be the 2010 and 2011 draft – which will likely be (with this trade) a middling pick.
Having said that, anytime I mention the potential frontcourt of Hawes, Amare and Martin I get a really good feeling in my tummy.
My brain, however, sees a defensive shipwreck.
by thelettere on Feb 13, 2009 12:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think it would take both Thompson and a Pick
That’s too much, even for Amare. And given his contract situation I don’t think anyone is coming along with a better deal. If Phoenix doesn’t want to take it c’est la vie.

Agree...
No way we give up one-half of Shock & Hawes PLUS our first rounder. Besides, I’d much rather keep Shock over Hawes, so as I’ve proposed many times, we should offer Salmons, BJax, Hawes & HOU’s pick for Amar’e.

But, if push comes to shove, and PHX insists on JT over Hawes…what do you do?
In property class we learned about the phenomenon of overvaluing the possessions you already own, so perhaps my hesitation is unwarranted?
by PhutureKings on Feb 13, 2009 12:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I would do
Filler/JT but no Houston pick or Filler/Hawes/Houston’s pick
But I wouldn’t give up our own pick in either case. I hear you about overvaluing your own possessions. Luckily I don’t really think much of Hawes and even in JT’s best case he’s not approaching Amare. But then, you have to consider Amare’s contract/attitude issues. It’s a tough call.
by nbrans on Feb 13, 2009 12:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't see
Why you wouldn’t just throw Houston’s pick in. It’s going to be a fairly low pick anyway. I wouldn’t let that pick become the deciding factor. I do agree that we don’t give up our unprotected pick and JT.
Keep in mind that the deal for Garnett was Al Jefferson and a top 3 protected pick, so that’s probably what Phoenix is looking for from us.

Both Moon and O’Neal only have this year left on their contract. So that gives them a massive amount of money in the offseason, along with getting rid of Banks horrid contract. If the machine is somehow wrong on O’Neal’s contract, then I don’t get it for them.

A Lot of Variables
The first thing I thought upon hearing this was that we are now 50% less likely to trade away Miller by the deadline.
Next, I thought about how our cap would be affected (not as much money to spend w/ Miller still on the books, obviously).
Then, as some have pointed out, this could actually lead to us being a stronger contender for Amar’e.
But, let’s not count Miami or Toronto out of anything yet, because, as far as we know, one of those teams might just turn around and flip some of their new acquisitions. So, we can’t say for sure how this all plays out, but my initial reaction is that this is probably not a good thing for us.
The Kings better get their shit together. I think we all are hoping for something to happen before the deadline…and by “something” I do NOT mean Salmons is traded for expiring salary cap.

Seriously doubt it
The Suns require 3 things for Amar’e:
-Expiring salary
-Draft picks
-Young players w/ potential
I’d say your deal gets done if Salmons is subbed for Miller and Hawes is subbed for the 2010 pick.
Which, by the way, is a trade I’d make. If Salmons, Jax, Hawes & HOU’s pick gets Amar’e I’d do it for sure.
Udrih, Martin, Garcia, JT, Amar’e (Brown, Greene, Williams, Miller off the bench) for the rest of the season.
by PhutureKings on Feb 13, 2009 12:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I valued the top 3 protected pick > Hawes.
So I would do your deal as well although, it depends on what the market is for Salmons. If Salmons for Joe Smith and a pick is availible I’d probably do that and than bank on one of our mid 20s pick becoming a nba player which with petrie’s draft cred is realistic.

Market for Slamons
Is pretty strong. He’s on a reasonable contract and playing pretty well right now.
I have to disagree with your preferred trade, though. Amar’e is a guranteed beast, 4-time all-star. An expiring contract and a draft pick in the mid-twenties (especially in this year’s draft) doesn’t get you anything close to what Amar’e offers. Thus, if it’s between the two deals, I don’t think you “bank” on a mid-20 pick over the opportunity to get a guy like Amar’e. Plus, say all you want about cap space, but it’s unusual to get a superstar player in free agency. The best opportunities are the draft & via trade.
I hate to give up Hawes, but I don’t see him impacting a team the way Amar’e does, and a front court of Amar’e & Shock paired with Martin and whatever the draft brings us, is pretty formidible.

Story in Chicago is that Paxton is out next week
Does that take them out of the running for Amare?
Or is it because he Doesn’t want to do the deal?

Well,
If it’s bc he doesn’t want to do the deal, then they should fire him immediately, rather than waiting a week, at which time the deadline will have passed.
Side note – I’m beginning to hate the Goddamned ESPN lottery machine. I “played” five times and the result was that the Kings got to pick 4th, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 1st. I quit while we were number one ;)

That thing is so stupid
Every time I play it comes up with ridiculous people getting the 1st pick. The first time I tried it the Nets won the lottery with a .6 % chance.

I play 20 times a shot
I have had us win #1 two times in twenty with the second worst record and the Warriors win 6 times with a 6.8% chance. So I scrubbed it for a while. I tried the other day and with the worst record, the Kings got the #1 9 out of 20 times so I don’t play anymore. And yes, I do keep playing until they land the #1 even if it takes “forever”.

Thats a possibility I think
but something would have to be done with Brad first.

Buying or Selling
We’ve all been acting like we have to make a move. Like we’d be the team making calls, pounding the pavement, nagging teams to try to find a better deal. Why don’t we assume the opposite? We’ve got expring contracts, we’ve got guys who could be contributors, we’ve got solid guys with good contracts.
I know a lot of teams are trying to avoid adding payroll, but a payroll bump would be worthwhile to a legit contender. They’d more than make up the money based on the financial bonuses of being a champion. I see GP sitting back and waiting for the phone to ring with the right deal. Miami called, but they wanted to throw Banks into the deal. We said thanks but no thanks, and sat back and continued to wait to see if the phone rings. If it doesn’t, wgar’s the big deal? This is a lost season already, so let’s just sit back. If a great deal comes along, we’ll pounce.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot

Agree
Im hoping thats why we haven’t already made a deal. I definitely didn’t want Marion if it came with Banks. Seems Toronto didn’t mind since it got Oneal off their payroll. At this point I think Brad will be traded for cap or wait until the summer (As if that wasn’t what we were doing anyways). Hopefully if Salmons doesn’t net us good assets we can also ship him out during the offseason at a higher value.

How about
Kings get Stoudemire and Robin Lopez.
Suns gets Thompson (player with potential), Salmons (decent player and value), BJax (expiring) and Sheldon Williams (expiring) and the 2010 No. 1.
We get a star and another young big to back up Spencer; they get two decent players, free up some space next year and have a crack at a possible lottery pick the following year.

Can you imagine
Jason Thompson getting passes from Nash? And having Grant Hill and the other Suns vets take him under his wing? I am thinking of the Suns take on this deal.

This deal
is definitely better than what the Cavs are offering. Not quite as much expiring money, but JT is probably better than Hickson, they get Salmons and the pick will be much better. Maybe it’s too good, but sometimes you have to step up to the plate and do what it takes to get it done.
