Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

Mostly talks about Salmons and Miller:

"There were indications Sunday that a trade involving swingman John Salmons is becoming increasingly likely, with Portland and Oklahoma City believed to be the leaders in a group of as many as five interested teams. The Trail Blazers' offer would involve forward Channing Frye's expiring contract ($3.2 million), and the Thunder's offer would involve forward Joe Smith's expiring deal ($4.8 million). According to numerous league sources, Dallas is also in the mix."

"New York, according to sources, is in play for Miller with an offer involving forward Malik Rose's expiring contract ($7.6 million)."

Both deals are for expirings

While I don’t mind Brad being traded for just expiring contracts I’m on the camp that thinks Salmons is worth more. He should at least net us a draft pick or a young prospect IMO. At this point I wouldn’t mind keeping him and maybe including him in a package this summer to get something better.

In terms of the Brad to New York trade I’m all for it. I was working the trade machine and came up with something: Brad + Mikki for the expiring contracts of Malik Rose (7,647,000) + Jerome James ($6,200,000). I had no idea James’ (horrible) contract expired this summer so I’m more than willing to take it. This gives the organization some financial relief (Maloofs) and gives management (Petrie, Levien) some room to operate. Mikki would thrive in the run and gun offense so that’s why I included him instead of K-9. I think this deal has a chance of happening if, as Amick writes, NY actually has some interest in acquiring Brad.

James

He doesn’t expire this year. He has a player option for 2009-10. So, um, do not want.

To make it work, the Knicks would have to add one of their low salary players: Nate Robinson (RFA this summer), David Lee (RFA), Wilson Chandler (rookie deal through 2012), Gallinari (rookie deal through 2013). Gallo DEFINITELY isn’t happening, and Lee is probably a pipe dream.

I’d take Robinson in a heartbeat, though.

The only other option that doesn’t resulted in wasted 2009-10 salary for Sacramento would be adding one of the bench bigs (Kenny Thomas, Mikki Moore) and replacing Rose with Marbury. We’ve been over that one.

if it forces them to give us David Lee

I knew I should've looked it up

That’s why I added the small sentence about being surprise Jerome’s contract expiring this summer because I wasn’t sure. No deal then… nothing really makes sense unless, like you say, we could get our hands on Nate or Lee which is probably not happening

I love the Frye deal. It’s the only one we get a player of relative value in a good age. A 7 footer too… who actually showed some flashes of talent in his rookie year.

Btw..

Can the Salmons deal to OKC work with Wilcox? He’s definitely better than Joe Smith.

Wilcox scares me somewhat

because I can see Geoff turning around and resigning him for the MLE for 6 years this summer.

by LPKingsFan on Feb 16, 2009 8:46 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

The effective results of such deals are that the Kings dump a proven player for an unproven prospect that we will owe roughly the same future $$$ or lose altogether. Either way these proposed deals are all giveaways. Use him if he can take other contracts with him. Otherwise, keep him.

Soft, perimeter-oriented jump shooter. Not a great rebounder or defender. Geoff Petrie loves guys like this and guys like this are exactly what the Kings do not need.

Completely Agree

The only reason to get rid of Salmons is if we can attach K9 (woof!) to the deal and/or B-52.
This idea of “the kings suck so get rid of salmon’s contract because they are going to suck with/ without him” makes no sense to me. With that reasoning we would just continually be trading all of our better players.
Also, something people are forgetting, Salmons DOESN’T have a bad contract. 5 mil a year for the next two and a half is very reasonable. He doesn’t fit in perfectly with this current team as it stands now, but who the F does, this team stinks.
He is the only player who plays defense, which doesn’t matter now, but might matter next year if we can make a move and get a draft pick that puts us somewhere back to playoff contention.
It made sense with Ron Artest because he was crazy and kept everyone on edge. I understand that Salmons isn’t Vlade, but he isn’t an “addition by subtraction” trade as bibby and artest were both originally thought to be.
Also, Salmons isn’t too old. He is in his late 20’s, but we are treating him like he is 35. Just because our core is 3-4 years younger than him doesn’t make him automatically expendible. Look at Bibby with the Hawks. They are very much a young team, he is very much an aging veteran, and last year they made the playoffs and did pretty well against the Celtics.
Overall, I think trading Salmons for an expiring contract would be an awful move and make the Kings the Florida Marlins of basketball (minus the two championships).

Kevin's part of the future core of this team

He’ll be in his prime when we become truly competitive while Salmons might be on a down swing. Meanwhile, OKC has hit their bottom and is actually on the way up towards being competitive. Personally I’d love to see John play for a competitive team where he gets the chance to shine.

As a Blazers fan.

What do I need to know about John Salmons? I’ve seen him play a few times (maybe 10 times in 2 years). My initial impressions were mostly favorable; he seems like a decent slasher, a good mid-range shooter off the dribble, a decent defensive wing … probably a better complimentary player than a first or second option though (which is probably what Portland wants out of their starting 3 anyway).

The Frye centered deal does have a little bit of irony (based on Channing dissing Sactown last year http://www.channingfrye.com/blog/?p=28) but despite Channing’s butt being welded to the bench he actually has a little bit of talent as long as he gets more than spot minutes … he’s just buried behind LaMarcus and Outlaw

In any case what do you guys consider “good value” for Salmons? Are expiring deals more important than “talent” would you guys think something like any of these deals (with a first and second rounder thrown in) would be palatable to Petrie … and the fans in general?

Thanks for the in depth response.

As for Bayless going anywhere that’s probably going to be a non-starter in a deal for salmons, he’s got a strong chance of being a very very good defensive minded “scoring” point guard and from the sounds of things management is very high on him … the only way he gets traded is for a youngish already established above average point guard.

It will be interesting to see what shakes out for both teams in the next few days.

Please make a FanPost and just paste it there. This is exactly the reason we must not trade Salmons.

Sure our “future” should consist mostly of talented youngsters but why the hell do we trade one of the best value per dollar contracts of the league for nothing?

What’s the downside of keeping Salmons for our future? He’s salary is not a big burden, he’s playing great, Donte at SF is too much of a long shot to give him minutes right now and even if we keep him, we will still have a lot of cap space to sign FAs.

We have a lot of bad contracts to trade for nothing and thank god their expiring time is getting closer (2010 – Brad, Moore, K9). So if the Maloofs want to trade Salmons, they better get something valuable for him and I don’t mean a 20+ pick and LaFrentz or Frye.

I've watched 6 or 7 Sacramento games this year, and lemme tell ya, Salmons is NOT the problem...

If Petrie really does dump him for nothing, I’d start gathering the pitchforks and rousing the rabble for a visit to Petrie’s house, if I’m a Kings fan… It’s not like his contract is bad… Where did this nutty idea originate?

I'm glad you said something timbo

Cuz you’re one of the few Bedger’s who really get that any deal with Salmons is probably going to have to include Kenny Thomas (I think that’s a better deal for Portland to take on personally).

I also think the fit with Salmons and Roy, and Salmons and Outlaw is too good to pass up. Especially since Butler is an offensive player whose not great defensively, and RJ is not necessarily a defensive stopper either. (He’s a good defender, but not as good as Salmons is.)

Petrie

Needs to be slapped if John Salmons is traded for expiring contracts. Salmons has one of the best price/performance ratios in the league. Not that that’s a real stat, but his production is extremely high for his salary. He’s worth more than expiring deals and a late first round pick.

by Carl on Feb 16, 2009 4:57 PM PST reply actions

I agree. But there is so much smoke about him flushing Salmons for pennies on the dollar that I'm starting to believe...

Here’s my Blazer fan deal offer:

FROM SACTOE: Miller and Salmons

FROM PDX: Expiring Contract Frye + Super Expiring Contract LaFrentz (80% insurance paid) + 1st round pick + new cars for the Maloofs for giving Salmons away for free

It’s an insanely one-sided salary dump, on the face of it… But it eliminates the two of the three main Sacramento names mentioned again and again and again and again in trade rumors in one fell swoop…

The problem

The reason no deals have been made (and the Bibby/Artest trades took so long to happen) is that the piece that has been attached to everything is Kenny Thomas.

I have a felling that your trade would happen immediately if you swap out Miller and throw in Thomas.

  • Thomas is the reason Bibby was traded at the last minute.
  • Thomas is the reason Artest made it through the trade deadline and into the summer.
  • Thomas is the reason Miller hasn’t been traded yet.
  • Thomas is the reason Salmons’ name has been thrown around so much.

It’s all about the K9 (woof!).
