Report: Sam I Am to the Kings
Chad Ford is reporting that it's Cassell and cash headed Sacto's way for a future second-rounder.
Don't know what Petrie's plans for the Alien are, but he's usually worth at least a laugh or two while he's around.
UPDATE: Talks confirmed by Amick. Money still be sorted out; it appears his entire salary will be covered by Boston.

Cash and An Extra point guard!
The oddities, the peculiarities, the implications! I can’t wait to hear what people come up with. Is Beno moving? Is this just a straight money deal? Is this a pre-deal before a bigger trade where Boston needs the roster spot? How much cash is coming?
Let’s gooooooooooo……

That's the immediate impulse thought for Celts fans,
that either a trade or perhaps multiple signings are coming (the latter possibly after the deadline). While I’m certainly not privy to what goes on behind closed doors, all signs had been that Cassell was doing a fine job in whatever his role was – semi-coach, semi-cheerleader, general loveable goofball, mentor to Rondo and some of the youngsters.
Given that a) he wasn’t making a ton, b) the Celts have mentioned how nice it’s been to have him around several times this year, c) he didn’t seem disgruntled in his role and perhaps most importantly, d) he was the team’s supposed insurance policy for the second half of the season as a back-up point (and by no means has that issue been resolved), it’s hard to fathom Danny Ainge making a move here if he wasn’t gearing up for something more.
I’ll just continue to hope against hope that said “something more” doesn’t involve a fellow from my hometown of the Sizable Apple who currently has his sneaker logo tattooed on his head.

is it possible that the Kings could get a 2nd round pick
And swap Bobby Brown for Cassell?

The other issue I have SW
Is that the KIngs don’t have a roster spot open to do this. This might mean another big trade is imminent. Hopefully anyway.

Theyll immediately waive Cassel.
So, basically, we’re getting some cash to take Cassell off their hands cause he’s not doing anything for them player-wise. Wouldnt be surprised to see him back in Boston in some kind of assistant capacity.

Or they could toss in Cassell as a throw in another trade
It’s always a possibility he could be used in a trade with Portland or something like that. No needd to hold onto Sam I Am, but there’s also no need to be hasty in waiving him immediately.

I disagree
Cassell is worth keeping on the roster as opposed to some other guys on the team, both from a money standpoint, as well as what he can bring to the team.

I'm not all that bright, so type slowly
On the face of it, what is the benefit to the Kings? Do they just get Cassell, waive him, and Boston pays the salary, and if so, how does that save the Kings any money, if they didn’t move anyone to get Cassell? More to come? Does Sam have anything left in the tank?
And my main fear:

Weird
So the Kings just traded for a player who is essentially retired? And they may not have sent anything for him?
Can Sam be packaged in a trade to another team before the deadline? That’s the only way I could see the Kings getting anything out of this, unless Boston sent more cash than Cassell is owed?

Yep
This is basically Boston paying the Kings to open up a roster spot. I wonder what move comes next from the Celtics.

I have yet to propose a trade but it is late and well...
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine
and keep Sam Cassell to coach. No, I am not kidding.
The Kings get expiring and a PG, The Okay’s get a Center who fits beautifully with their team, and the Horn get to dump big $ in one and two years and I think a guy in BM who fits their offense well.

well, if nothing is learned from all the posts in the last few days
at least we have determined that even after a few months on StR I am still a lame post-er.
I can’t even link what I proposed because it happened. I had a trade machine deal which sent Tyson Chandler to the OKC, Wilcox and Smith to the Kings and BMiller to the Hornets. The trade worked because it happened…. kinda. Just BMiller wasn’t involved.
If a trade happened in the forest and no one heard it……(did it really happen?)

Cassell
It’s been known around the league for several seasons now that Cassell is essentially an on-the-court coach. The guy knows the game inside and out, including all the crafty tricks. Even if he’s not on the court, he can be instrumental to the development of our PGs.

My hope is...
This is a move that will beget another move. Say someone wants Salmons but the expirings/players the Kings are to receive make more than his contract. Add Cassell and maybe it works.
Otherwise, it doesn’t make too much sense. Does it?
by towndunce on Feb 17, 2009 7:36 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
By the way
The Kings will make about $350,000 in the deal, according to the current numbers being thrown around. Boston will save $300,000.
For anyone talking trade: Cassell can’t be packaged with another player in a trade this season. If this one gets put on hold pending other work, Boston could be added as an extra team with Cassell going somewhere else, the Kings getting the cash, and Boston getting the super-protected second-round pick. But I’m not clear a) Cassell wants to play anywhere but Boston, b) Boston wants to potentially help anyone who’d want Cassell (Orlando, Cleveland?), and c) it would be much help, as the Kings have a variety of small expiring contracts (Douby, Williams, Jackson, semi-Moore, semi-Brown).

Forgot about combining...
Still, it opens there could be “two” trades that teams can work out…
by towndunce on Feb 17, 2009 8:01 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Tz I see what you mean
But it’s always possible that Cassell could be part of the swap, and technically the swap would look like a 2 for 2 swap, when really it’s a 1 for 1 swap.
For two months after receiving the player in trade or claiming him off waivers, if the player is being traded in combination with other players. However, the team is free to trade the player by himself (not packaged with other players) immediately. This restriction applies only to teams over the salary cap. (Also see question number 72 for a special case where players can be traded together in less than two months.)
I forgot that you can’t trade him in conjunction with anybody, but he can be traded by himself. There are ways for that to be possible.

Good trade
We get money for doing nothing. Cassell will probably get waived and if he doesn’t he’s gone at the end of the year anyway. Maybe he could provide a veteran presence if we keep him.

I wouldn't be surprised if half the motivation was...
…to have Sam here to get to know him, get an idea of his philosophy, his understanding of the game, his ability to connect with our players…and to have the inside track at hiring him as an assistant coach and later a head coach.
Some people think he could be a very successful head coach. Cheap price to pay for the inside track on a guy like that.

Agreed
Cassell seems like a guy who would segue into that type of role more easily than a lot of players. Doubtful he’d be ready to be a head coach yet, and although I like Natt in some ways, I don’t get the impression that he’s going to be around long enough to mentor anyone…

On a serious note, if the kings don’t waive him it seems Beno may be on his way out.

From Chad Ford's chat ....
Anthony (New York City): Which team says no to the trade of Brad Miller, Kenny Thomas, and Mikki Moore for Stephon Marbury and Jared Jeffries? Knicks clear cap space for 2010 and the Kings clear cap space for next year.
SportsNation Chad Ford: (1:09 PM ET ) I know the Knicks and Kings spoke Monday about a deal with Brad Miller and Malik Rose as the principals. The talk never got too detailed. I think for the Knicks to pull the trigger Jared Jeffries has to be in the deal. For the Kings to do it, they’d like Nate Robinson back. I do think there is a deal there for both teams that makes sense. Kings get cap relief now. Knicks get it in 2010. I think ultimately, both sides say yes if they can work out the details.

If the Kings get Jared Jeffries, I’m going to immediately start calling him either J9 or K10 (woof!).
