Meanwhile, the Kings have had discussions regarding New Orleans center Tyson Chandler as another possibility that could bring more impact along with added salary. Yet those possibilities would be more likely if the Kings could first trade Brad Miller.
Also: new Amare discussions, more Miller to New York, and the local renewal of the Francisco Garcia/Rashad McCants war.

If the Kings could dump
Brad Miller, Kenny Thomas, Mikki Moore, Quincy Douby and John Salmons, and save money doing it, this is going to be a great rebuilding moment for this group. None of them are getting consistent rotation time right now except for Salmons and Miller, and both have potential replacements already playing or in the wings. The Kings need a change for the sake of change. I think Petrie and the Maloof’s know it.
That being said, most teams are against cap space, because sometimes they can’t use it. In this economy, I don’t really think that will be a problem. I think people will pleasantly be surprised by where the salary cap is in relation to last year, where it goes down, or no gains will be made. I think dumping salary, and either using it in a trade where you get a significant player back, or just holding onto it as the young talent on this team will be up for extensions, would be wise.
If you’re losing money in gobs, why spend a ton of money for a roster that won’t win significantly more next year either? If the fans are entertained, and they come out next season, doesn’t that make up somewhat for what you lost this season?

Another example
Camby has been the de facto standard for Salary Dump trades . . . but could Chandler have been had for cap space and a big body (e.g. Williams/Moore/etc.)? PROBABLY.
But please, cap space haters (whomever is left), resume your regularly scheduled hating.

Yup yup
I always thought the Clippers deal for Camby was overrated. I always thought teams just didn’t want to dump anything on the Clippers, and they didn’t want to take just any contract back. The Clippers chose the Nuggets cuz they knew the Nuggz wanted to dump salary (which they did very effectively), and they didn’t want to take a long term contract past 2010.

Thoughts
Swap Bobby Brown for Matt Barnes, and get a future 2nd back. See if the Suns bite. It would save them a little luxury tax at the least. It’s not like they have any 2nd rounders anyway.
Rashad McCants doesn’t entice me, but neither does Quincy Douby. The fact the Kings have to waive a player to make a 2 for 1 player doesn’t make it any easier. (I think it would be likely that Moore could be waived actually. Or the Kings keep him.) I would do Brad Miller for Malik Rose and Jerome James in a heartbeat. I don’t like Jerome, but keeping Brad around isn’t doing anything for this team either. If that’s what it takes to do this deal, then do it. Throw in Quincy Douby to get the deal done. Just get a deal done that allows you to build around this team long term. Stephon Marbury is off the table (I think the Knicks were rebuffed by Phoenix—what a dumb move on Phoenix’s part), and what’s really funny is that, the Knicks are looking to dump some salary on the Kings with James. (Don’t blame them, cuz I would too.)
My thing is simple: The Kings need to dump nearly 20 million dollars of salary by this deadline if they want to rebuild this team correctly. How they do that is up to them. This team has asset’s (2009/10 1st round pick), and young talent to build around (Hawes,Thompson). It also has quality older “veteran” talent in Garcia and Martin. This team’s cupboard is not completely barren, nor should it be looked that way. When you take Garcia & Martin out of the equation, you have a shitty record when they’re not out there. This is a team that was probably 25 wins worthy this season, and we all hoped for 35 wins. But a fool would trade away Kevin Martin without getting a significant upgrade (I mean a significant upgrade—not Manu Ginobili—so someone like Wade, LeBron, Kobe or a player like that).
I like the Kings are looking to make a deal here in slashing salary (if the economy wasn’t bad—this would be a great move regardless), and allowing themselves greater flexlibility in terms of their roster. That means not having Shareef Abdur Rahim medically retirement clogging up your cap (which is how maybe the KIngs are getting the Cassell deal done—they have his roster spot open now), you won’t have K9 or B52 on the cap either. Sure, they’re contracts expire in 2010, but why wait a year? You can lose 65 games without them too.
The only player I would even play hardline with is Salmons. He’s worth dumping Thomas (like with Portland), or he’s worth getting a couple picks back (1st/2nd rounder), and cap relief. I argued this yesterday on Bedge that Salmons versatility is worth them giving up a 1st round pick (I would like Petteri Koponen), plus taking on Kenny Thomas for next season, even if they have to give up Raef LaFrentz and Ike Diogu to do it.
I hope Brad Miller is not severly injured, and the Kings kept him from playing so they could trade him. That’s my hope anyway.

By the way
a your token resident of the Frozen North, aka MN, just say no to Rashad McCants. I honestly can’t think of a more self-absorbed, delusional player, who doesn’t have the foggiest concept of the term team than Mr. McCants.
And yes, I remember Ron-Ron.
McCants is the poster child for spoiled kids handed everything because of their talent from an early age that aren’t even passingly familiar with the term maturity. So day he may get it, but by all accounts here, he’s nowhere near that day.

I'm with ya there
Don’t want McCants either long term. But short term? He might use being traded to rejuvenate his career. For the rest of the 2 months, I would think about it.

I really don't understand
why the Hornets would move Chandler… Anybody know the scoop on this?

Saving $$$$$ MM
That’s what it was about. That and Chandler hasn’t been the same player this season.

OK, yeah
but it seems to me the Hornets were poised to make a fairly serious run at winning it all in the next season or two. I know Chandler’s been hurt, but…
If I was a fan in the Big Easy I’d be pretty bummed because that was a nice nucleus, and Chandler filled an important role.

Yeah
But it’s also possible the Hornets recognized they couldn’t go much farther than where they went last year with Chandler around.

I guess so.
That I can understand (although I don’t necessarily agree since it seems to me Chris Paul is still getting better and better).
But if it’s just about the money then that sucks for Hornet fans. As we know all too well around here, you’ve gotta grab for the brass ring while you can, because there’s no guarantee the Merry Go Round ride is gonna last.

I don't think the Hornets were going to go that far in the West
I’m really surprised they didn’t try to dump Posey first though.

How many more does Peja have on the books?
I also wonder: would Phoenix have been interested in Chandler? Chandler, Wright, and expiring or two and obvi the pick. Hell, maybe Posey too.
I don’t know. I just figured Chandler would be more valuable than some expirings. I mean, if the market is that stiff, what can the Kings really expect?

Unfortunately
The Kings can expect to stand pat this year and use their multiple expirings next year to land a player.
On the bright side, this should give the Kings at least two quality picks (it worked for Portland & Seattle).
On the negative side, pretty much everything else.
