Hornets Send Tyson Chandler to OKC
... which a) kills Sacramento's hope for Chandler, and b) either damages [lost assets] or emboldens [ready to compete next year] OKC's pursuit of John Salmons.

Ya just saw that too
Not happy about it. That takes us out of the Chandler deal and any deal with OKC since they gave up Smith and Wilcox. I’m hoping we’ll do something meaningful before Thursday and still have Jason Thompson and Kevin Martin too.

Not completely out w/r/t Salmons
They have Swift, Mason and Sene as expiring contracts. Mason is out for the year, so it’d look bad to trade for him. Swift would have to consent to a trade since he’s on a one-year deal — but I don’t imagine the prospect of a bit of PT and being closer to Bakersfield would hurt. Swift and Sene (and a pick, please) would get Salmons done.

I think there are a lot of better deals out there for Salmons then what OKC offered.
Salmons seems to be the third guy everyone wants after Amaré and Chandler. Petrie has played this thing the right way, worse case scenario, Salmons takes a Miller or Thomas with him when he leaves.

Yes please
That’s my opinion too. If you’re going to trade Salmons, make the other team (like Portland) take Kenny Thomas away also.

Totally unrelated
But I can definitely get behind this OKC team. Westbrook, Salmons(maybe?), Durant, Green and now Chandler. Throw in Griffin (I hope not) and someone like harden and suddenly that team is looking good in 2 years.

I was bit ambiguous:
I said attempt, not success. If they make the playoffs, they’re getting beat in the first round by the abovementioned. With Chandler, there was always the chance they could light a fire and make it to the WCF if they shored up a high enough position. Now, not at all.

What a Difference a Month and a Half Makes
At the beginning of 2009, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Sacramento Kings had a lot in common: both teams were in the hunt for the No. 1 pick in the draft, both featured 2 guards with All-Star aspirations and both had just changed coaches.
Now look at them. The Thunder went 7-7 in January and are 9-12 in 2009 despite a three-game losing streak. Durant made a name for himself during All-Star weekend with a signature game, and the team just landed Tyson Chandler, one of the most sought-after players being actively shopped on the trade market. And they are still in the hunt for the No. 1 pick.
The Kings, meanwhile, went 2-14 in January and are 3-19 this year. Martin still can’t even sniff an All-Star game, let alone play in one, and the Kings just made a splashy trade for Sam Cassell, who’s been in street clothes all season.
Don’t give up hope, though. Just remember that everything could be different in 45 days.

Question
Is Durant better than Martin? Who would you rather have?

Durant, no doubt
And that’s my point. The Kings have not been in a position to land a Kevin Durant, much less two picks in the first five of any draft. Incredible good fortune for OKC there – if Boston doesn’t drop out of the top three in that draft, they probably don’t trade their pick to Seattle for Allen (which became Green). If Seattle doesn’t leap up a few spots, they don’t land Durant. If the balls bounced squarely, they probably would have gotten Green with their pick, and maybe they could have traded Ray Allen to Charlotte for Brandan Wright. That team would have a slightly different look than their current squad, yes?
And to be precise, the difference three and half months makes (since that’s when the season began) is two games – that’s how many games the Thunder are currently ahead of the Kings. One of the nice bi-products of the Chandler trade is we will almost certainly not catch OKC in the standings.
I’d much rather have OKC’s roster right now than ours. Had we received a favorable ping pong ball bounce (I can’t recall, but I think that we were two games better than Seattle that year), maybe things would be different.

There's another flip side (boy I love stacking fractions onto each other)
You could be in Milwaukee’s position where they’re desperate to move Richard Jefferson so they can pay Ramon Sessions and Charlie Villaneuva next season. The KIngs, thankfully, are not in that position.
What about Charlotte? They keep doing some crazy things in terms of their monetary involvement, and roster flexibility.
Personally, I don’t mind where the Kings are at in terms of their roster. It was a bi product of being good for so long, and never letting go of that. Had the team dumped salary continually for 3 years running, they might be where the Suns are at now. Big deal. When you play stars a ton of money to be a franchise player, and then have that player in the 2nd year of his deal have microfracture surgery, then it’s not exactly going peaches & cream for you. People act like the Kings have had a ton of opportunities to move back into the elite. (Kenny Thomas had 5 1/2 years left on his deal when the Sixers traded him. Perhaps that’s the reason we forget so much about how yesterday effects tomorrow. It’s also revisionist history to say the Kings were going to get a better offer. The Sixers knew Chris had issues, but they took a risk provided they could move Thomas. It was like a shuffling of asset’s that no longer worked for either side, and unfortunately for the Kings, that came with the fallout of losing the franchise’s most popular player.)

Contender?
Cleveland maybe, but they’ve sort of taken themselves off the block cause of their injuries. Portland could use him or Salmons, and as for non-contenders, New York could use him mainly for 2010.
by Aykis16 on Feb 17, 2009 11:53 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
New York City?
The only way Miller helps NYK in 2010 is if the Kings take some of their 2010/2011 salaries back for him.
Here’s the list, btw:
- Curry ($11M – player option)
- Jeffries ($7M – ETO)
- Gallinari ($3M – rookie contract)
- Chandler ($2M – rookie contract)
Knowing that the two rookie contracts likely won’t go, is there anything else on that list that sounds appealing?
To simplify, do you want Brad Miller or Eddy Curry/Jared Jeffries plus an extra year?

Wish our rebuilding looked that good...
If they hadn’t failed several times over trying to get a center, their team would look even stronger.
Now that doesn’t even matter since they turned some decent expiring vets into Chandler. He was the biggest target I was hoping we would go after considering his strengths match up perfectly with our weaknesses. It wasn’t to be though since we weren’t looking to add that much long-term salary.
We will probably get trash for Brad Miller, and trash + a mediocre pick Westbrook. That was probably the reality of the situation from the start, but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing. Reality can be very disappointing, can’t it?

Miller to Chicago might heat up again.
If the Amaré sweepstakes is really over, the ground work is already in place to make a deal with the Bulls. This is going to be a crazy couple of days, I just hope that when the merry-go-round stops, the Kings proved to be major players and the current team is all but blown up. I haven’t given up on an Amaré deal, I still see three way opportunities with Portland and maybe a few other teams.
Hot dogs, get your hot dogs.

Oh man...
Why, oh why do I have sneaky suspicion that the trade deadline is going to be a major disappointment? I have no trouble eating these words if something significant happens, but doesn’t it seem more and more likely (as the minutes & hours tick away) that we’re in for a shitty-Christmas-type of day? You know, the one xmas where you wanted a Mongoose freestyle BMX bike and you got the Huffy w/ the Go-Bots chainguard instead? F*ck you, mom & dad!
Anywho, I hope I am wrong, but the “Road to Rebuilding” has slowly and painfully transitioned into the “Highway to Hell.”

Any evaluation of Brooks
Has to be done down the road a bit, I think. Reggie Theus was a rising star at the end of his first season, you know.
I do like what they are doing with that team – these next two drafts (or dealing the stockpile of picks they currently have) will be huge.
Could we be living in a world where Portland and Oklahoma City are the two teams to beat in the west in the next few years? Whodathunkit?

Look at StR’s traffic when it started back in Oct 05, and now. It’s really more amazing than any other bball blog site. The Kings are a small market, have lost interest, had a worse team every year (or about ), and yet, StR’s traffic has grown over that time. Amazing.

I wasn’t offed. The rise of section was synchronous with my going deep on Sactown’s bench. It’s hard to follow the Kings remote and work pressures + the tech blog pushed for me to make some choices back in 2007. What’s wrong with you?
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
I am the stone that builder refused..I am the visual...The inspiration..That made lady sing the blues....I'm the spark that makes your idea bright.....The same spark that lights the dark....So that you can know your left from your right...I am the ballot in your box....The bullet in your gun...The inner glow that lets you know...To call your brother son....The story that just begun...The promise of what's to come...And I'm 'a remain a soldier till the war is won....
