A John Salmons trade before Thursday's noon deadline looks likely. The Kings have been in touch with as many as 10 to 12 teams, so interest is high and something probably gets done. Expiring contracts and draft pick(s) would come back in return, as well as the possibility of cash to help pay for some expirings.

I now despise Daryl Morey with every fiber of my being:

As I sit here watching Houston’s Tracy McGrady drop F-bombs on SportsCenter while discussing his decision to undergo microfracture surgery, it’s worth noting that the Rockets tried to send him to Sacramento before this news was this official.

The Kings had no interest, but Houston just figured they would ask if Sacramento wouldn’t mind up giving up that Kevin Martin guy.

Hey Houston? Eff off.

No, no, no

I meant the trade scenario. Simmons talks about Morey getting the Maloofs drunk and offering T-Mac for Martin. I thought it was funny that he actually tried it

The problem

He forgot the “getting them drunk first” step.

...

Salmons is worth more than an expiring and a late round draft pick, who are crapshoots and unlikely to make his level of impact, even giving the pick a couple years to get settled.

by sactown on Feb 18, 2009 8:06 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Is he though?

The Kings could stock up on picks themselves, and rebuild through the draft, and pick a couple of young players who could make a difference next season. (It’s also possible that they would stash one player oversea’s in picking an Euro who isn’t ready to come over right away, but could several years down the road.)

There is so much to chew on in that blog entry I don’t even know where to begin.

For people who are interested in trading Salmons

Behold this important information on trading Salmons (as pertains to his trade kicker—yikes):

THE TROUBLE WITH TRADE KICKERS

The Kings just made a trade for the purpose of landing a few hundred thousand bucks (Sam Cassell), so go ahead and use that as a measuring stick for their financial stance in trade dealings. That being said, the prospect of trading Salmons and Moore has been complicated by trade kickers in both players’ contracts (trade kickers are player bonuses that only get paid if that player is traded).

The added sum on Salmons’ deal is $1.9 million, a number that represents 15 percent of the remaining amount of his contract. That number would be approximately $870,000 smaller if Salmons had a player option for 2010-11 instead of an early termination option, but the collective bargaining agreement dictates that ETOs are included for kickers where as player options are not.

While Moore is only guaranteed $2 million for next season, he has a 12.5 percent trade kicker that adds up to approximately $1 million in added cash that must be taken into account. Rest assured, the added cash doesn’t make it any easier to get something done here.

Is the kicker amount figured into

The trade? Or is it just base salaries that have to match up (within the 125%)?

Just Salaries

But the kickers will affect other teams’ salary cap/luxury tax calculations.

For those who were wondering

I deleted the fanshot of the “salary cap bomb, and the Cassell news”. Amick included the news of Reef’s contract being taken off (along with his roster spot) the books, as well as the news of Cassell coming or not. It just seems redundant, and all the information can be included in this particular post.

Salmons

I like Salmons and would be pretty pissed if the Kings traded him away for only cap relief and a second round pick. I think Salmons should be worth at least a late first round pick. However, if we can trade Miller (and hopefully Thomas and/or Moore) as well as John, at least that will free up enough cap space to get a quality small forward or point guard in free agency

Well, OKC could offer either the Spurs or Nuggets 08 first

I would think either would be involved, with Mason. I’d also like to take a flier on Weaver, but that’s just me.

Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,

Now set the teeth - and teach them how to war!
