He is overpaid, though.

And Kenny Thomas wasn’t his current pile of suckitude when we acquired him. If we end up with Noc, I just hope his play would at least remain consistent.

He may be but he's a bad one then.

Salmons is a 35.4% 3 point shooter for his career, 41.8% this year and his shooting has clearly gotten better as he got older.

Nocioni is 36.7% career, 37.8% this year. Salmons has made 77 of them this year, Noc 79. There’s no statistical difference between their shooting, its a break even.

I know everyone thinks it can’t get worse defensively, but seriously, Nocioni is going to be the “good” defender for us on the wing for the next 3 years? seriously?

Just say no, making a move for the sake of making it can be a mistake.

by ForThree on Feb 18, 2009 12:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Noce only plays 24 minutes

so the # of 3s he takes don’t quite match up. 1/2 his shots are 3s whether you like that idea or not(?)

that's fair

the concept of a pure shooter works for me, though we’re pretty close to having that already with Martin. We do need to worry a little about having no one that can create a shot for themselves when the offense doesn’t create one.

But I know you and I are way different in that feeling. I’m ok with a shooter, but they need to bring more or be cheaper than Mr. Nocioni for me to be excited. Its too many years.

I admire your courage

in taking up this fight. And, of course, I hope you’re right is Noc does come here he helps.

I’d just rather have Salmons for a couple years and Miller’s giant expiring contract this upcoming summer then Chicago’s chaff expirings and a guy they’d walk 50 miles barefoot in a blizzard to pawn off on another team.

by ForThree on Feb 18, 2009 12:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s 29, his PER has gone down every year for the last four years to about 11 this year and we want this for 3 more years?

How is this better than keeping Salmons who is the same age, cheaper and better and letting B52 expire next year?

This trade would be horrible.

by ForThree on Feb 18, 2009 12:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, what's really troubling

is that he’s gone from tough-nosed and good to seriously mediocre in such a short span. If he were 25 you’d think, ok, just having an off year, but his mileage is starting to pile up, and he’s signed until he’s 34. He’s been playing like a shell of what he used to be just a couple of years ago.

I really think he’d turn into Kenny Thomas, Aregentinian-style.

by nbrans on Feb 18, 2009 12:25 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Actually

This isn’t the worst thing ever. I’m not a big fan (since Salmons is cheaper and better), but the Kings would be $10-14 million under the cap, depending on where the cap ends up, Moore’s fate and the top pick.

But Nocioni is a good/great rebounder at the three, he is supposedly a decent defender, he is not afraid to shoot threes (which he shoots well), and he screams a lot. Plus-minus thinks he’s good.

I’d be somewhere between disappointed and aghast.

Um

No.

Nocioni is a decent player but he is NOT better than Salmons and has a worse contract! WHY would Petrie do this? Gooden is an expiring but so is Miller next season. Salmons has one of the cheapest contracts for a player of his caliber.

To make this trade work, Chicago would have to throw in their first round pick this year along with maybe a second round or two in the next couple drafts. Even then, it’s iffy.

Yeah, I’d need a first to endorse this.

by Ziller on Feb 18, 2009 12:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

co-sign

Assuming Miller/Salmons gives them a slight boost, that would be somewhere around 15, which would guarantee us a Lawson, Collison or Brackins if we’re feeling shaky about them being available with the HOU pick. Then again, T-Mac is out for the year…

by LPKingsFan on Feb 18, 2009 12:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Why Petrie would do this?

You said it yourself. Gooden expires this season, Brad’s got another year. Nocioni’s deal declines in value over the next three years, so it’s not a huge bump over Salmons.

But it certainly doesn’t seem like fair value for Salmons AND Miller. There’s gotta be a pick thrown in here…

Per Sam: http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/sports/kings/archives/019736.html#Comments_Container

I’ve been told more about the Chicago-Kings deal and had the pieces confirmed.

It’s Salmons and Miller for Nocioni, Gooden, Michael Ruffin (expiring worth $1.1 million) and Cedric Simmons ($1.7 million expiring). And there are indications that it’s close to happening.

by dalt99 on Feb 18, 2009 12:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well

I would assume the Kings would drop Moore and hopefully could trade away Shelden and KT. That would leave the backup PF spot to Gooden. JT can’t play 48 minutes. Now, if the Kings got the #1 pick and got Griffin, then Gooden goes bye-bye

When Noc signed his contract

he was a slightly above average player; he has since regressed, hard.

Its not just money spent this summer, its money spent for the next several years that keeps you from making substantive changes.

If this summer Nocioni was a FA and Petrie signed him to a 3yr MLE deal, these boards would go berzerk, and rightfully so. That’s the same thing as getting him now. You just bought another bad MLE deal rather than letting Miller expire.

There are a few conflicting signs out there, but a top source says the Kings are talking to New Jersey about a deal that would send Miller and Salmons to the Nets for hometown boy Ryan Anderson, Stromile Swift, Trenton Hassell, and Eduardo Najera.

The Nets are supposedly trying to shed Vince Carter for salary purposes. You don’t generally do something like that and then turn around and take on more salary.

I'd take this over the bulls offer.

Stromile is 6.2m expiring, Najera is only guaranteed 3mill next year, Ryan is a prsopect, and Hassel has an early termination clause.

There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru

two more 1 yr team options. But hassel for a year as well?

sweetner

I like this better than the Bulls deal for sure then. So it’s only Hassell we’d be eating. I’m all for it. Seems they may be close to trading Vince then if they want Salmons.

by Doubl3Dos3 on Feb 18, 2009 1:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

but if they're trading Vince

why do they want Salmons/Miller?

Salmons plays the 3, Miller plays the 4, Lopez plays the 5

Seems to work.

Ryan Anderson ($1.2 million this season, $1.3 next season with two team options thereafter), Stromile Swift ($6.2 million expiring), Trenton Hassell ($4.3 million this season with $4.3 million next as player option), and Eduardo Najera ($3.4 million this season, $3.1 million in 2009-10, $2.8 million in 2010-11 and $2.6 million in 2011-12).

I do this trade

Assuming the Kings dump Najera and Hassell after 2010? Ryan Anderson is going to be a very good player in MHO

Me too

it’s not a bad trade at all. I’d rather see a salary dump with a nice prospect (a la the Artest trade, which I still love) then taking on another bad contract

While I'm not totally against this

an draft pick needs to be involved and it better be an unprotected first rounder this year.

I like Nocioni but he’s just a more expensive Salmons, who rebounds better. I think as a starting 3 he’ll put up the same point totals as Salmons but grab more rebounds. I just think he’s too expensive and we’d have him for too long. But, if the Bulls throw in this years potential lottery pick it’d definitely soften the blow

So it’s like 42 trips

Still not sure

You could interpret that as “30 minutes total to get there and back” or “30 minutes there and 30 minutes back”.

Clarification please!!

Do you know what can happen in 30 minutes? By then we could have the Wizards unrpotected first rounder and Lebron coming our way! Or nothing could happen at all. Why would you want to miss it?

Oh For Goodness Sakes

So then our power forward depth lineup will look like this:
Jason Thompson – Drew Gooden – Mikki Moore – Ike Diogu – Kenny Thomas

Shelden Williams is also a power forward that plays center. Talk about a hydra.

Holy cow.

Late to the party

I’m gonna take as a given that because we suck, it doesn’t matter if we get Drew Gooden or King Kong Bundy back in a trade as the expiring. We don’t need more wins. So we’re flipping Miller a year early to dump salary and trading our main chip Salmons for extra years of Nocioni? This is retarded. Am I wrong?

I don't really understand this

I know its been said here before but this kind of looks like a deal just to be making a deal, I personally like Salmons and I know we have been trying to get Miller out but I just don’t see many advantages to this particular deal

by MTBalla on Feb 18, 2009 2:04 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I’m not going to turn against Petrie. History will show if the trade is wrong after 3 years.

I’d like though to read an explanation of this trade from Petrie’s point of view.

If they had to do this to move Miller

to save space for something pending (still crossing my fingers on that Wash pick)
