Summer of 2009 Hypotheticals.

So I'm just thinking this through for the Kings sake. I'd like to get a nice tread going about our summer options, which it seems are quite vast. The basic premise is we've got our first round draft picks, and early 2nd rounder. This comes out to 3 bodies for about $7.2Mill. Adding this to our $46 Mill base(w/o SAR), then adding in roughly 1.3 for SAR which will be in cap and not insurance, brings our working total to $53.8Mill.

Our roster looks like this: Martin, Nocioni, Udrih, Hawes, Garcia, Thompson, Greene, 1st rounder, 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, & our SINGLE expiring contract Thomas.

As noted we've got four seats to fill before the season starts. What can we do with this in Free Agency?

Using THIS LIST and salary info from HERE, I'm asking people to come up with 1) Yr best MLE signings, 2) Yr best Sign & Trade options, 3) Anything else you can think of.

An MLE would look like: McCants(5Mill).

A Sign & Trade would look like: Hedo Turkoglu(4 yrs 15+Mill) for
Thomas(8.5Mill) + Nocioni(7.5Mill).

Note these are just examples that might work: Hedo's a free agent, he gets paid more through Orlando, they don't want to lose him for nothing and they can't sign him for much more than they would be paying Nocioni. And they'd get relief in an expiring.

The question is really what do you think the free agents and the restricted free agents are going to get paid (obviously hypothetical), and who could this team really use, and what would it take for the Kings to trade for them.

Let's see what y'all got:

Why would anyone

do a sign and trade for an expiring contract and a guy that’s overpaid? They could just not spend the money or sign someone to a new market value contract rather than have to suffer through a year of an expiring deal just to take on someone paid above market value.

Also, the $15mil a year for Hedo was just an example right? He’ll probably be lucky to get much more than half of that,

The economy dip

Has hurt Hedo alot more than any other player on the FA market.

K9 doesn't get moved until the trade deadline.

Although because of the current financial crisis, his contract will bring more interest than Millers’ did. Noc’s contract goes down each year, so his value MAY get better after next year. Of the players available for trade, JT, Hawes, & Greene are the only players with talent and a low enough contract, to draw interest in a league where 15 teams may be applying for loans from the League.

If Beno finishes the year like he’s been playing the last 5 games, the Kings may wait until 2010 draft before looking for the future starting PG. So, they might get the best pg available with the Houston pick. If they get Griffin, they might trade JT for a top 5 pick or a starting PG. There really isn’t enough cap space to use Greene to acquire anyone but another MLE level player.

Unless the bidding for RFA disappears or falls to unprecedented dollar levels, the Kings take the BPA on their first 2 picks, and wait until the 2010 draft when K9 is gone, before they really start to wheel & deal for quality FA’s or trades. The only cap space that will be spent will be to resign a couple of their expiring to min. 2 yr contracts with the 2nd yr a team option. And, they may sign some undrafted players to min. contracts. The Maloofs MIGHT spend if they can get a special player at a bargain price, but unless that happens, they put the wallet away until 2010.

I thought we established that SAR doesn't count against the cap?

Yes, the team has to pay a portion – but that amount is not counted cap-wise?

Did I miss someone getting that re-clarified that?

They'll be some good player signing for MLE or less next summer

Thats what I guess anyway with the current economy. Ben Gorden who turned down $10 mil a yr will get 6 or 7 mil. Artest about the same etc…

Hedo comes out? I don’t know, he is one who’ll probably be offered in the $10 mil range.

My wish list would start in the middle

GP!

Pick the best interior defender we can find to add to our rotation at a good price

He's not coming here regardless

But why wouldn’t you want him?

I want someone who plays defense under the basket

a tough-guy, a big jumpshooter we have.
Thats a little harsh, he’s OK, but past his prime.

Right

Because Rasheed Wallace has never played defense at any point in his career. Not once! (On a serious note, he isn’t coming here.)
