This frees the Kings I imagine from paying Mikki the rest of this season and his $2 MM buyout next season, no?

Nope

My understanding is that he cleared waivers, so no one claimed him or his contract. After that, he was free to sign with whomever he wanted, and the Kings still owe him (kind of like the mega millions that Michael Finley was receiving from Dallas while playing for and also getting paid by San Antonio).
