Rubio likely to enter 2009 draft
That's the signal that Chad Ford is getting, anyways. Good news for the Kings if he's right.

Good news only if we get a top 3 pick.
Because after that, he’ll be gone most likely.
Here are the Lottery Teams I’d think would go for Ricky over Blake (in order of likelihood to get top pick):
Sacramento, Minnesota, Indiana, Toronto, New York and Phoenix (Steve’s getting older and what better person to teach Ricky?)
The rest I think would pick Blake over Ricky:
Washington, OKC, Clippers, Memphis, Golden State, Charlotte, New Jersey, Chicago
Of the teams that would take Blake over Ricky, only a few would not take him if they had the 2nd team. Those teams are:
New Jersey (Devin Harris), Chicago (Derrick Rose), OKC (Russell Westbrook is playing amazing and they need an inside presence), Memphis (Mike Conley is finally developing).
That leaves 12 teams that would take Ricky over anyone else with the 2nd team and of the 4 that wouldn’t, only 2 have legitimate chances of getting in the top 3.

Somewhat agree
Rubio’s coming out helps unless we get the #1 pick and prefer Griffin, in which case it makes no difference. Otherwise, his presence deepens the draft by one player, so if you had (say) James Harden at #2, he may now drop to #3, Jordan Hill goes from #3 to #4, etc.
I’m not sure that Indiana (TJ Ford) and Toronto (Calderon) pass on Blake, but you could be right.
Also, the more players that declare for this draft, the more options we will have with our Houston pick.

Reasoning
Toronto has Bosh. Getting Blake wouldn’t help in convincing him to stay. Getting Ricky might. Also, Jose gives him a vet who speaks his language.
Indiana could genuinely go either way.
by Aykis16 on Feb 27, 2009 3:49 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Indiana I agree with
But Bosh is gone no matter what, and getting a point guard who isn’t as good as the one you already have helps how?

Nice analysis
I’d put Toronto in the no Ricky category though, Calderon is a true untouchable to them.
by jstnblke41 on Feb 27, 2009 3:07 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
But...
is he more untouchable than Bosh?
Toronto has a quality PG and a quality big, so they could go either way. They’d probably take Griffin, as Bosh can play C, but Rubio could be great trade bait to land them another star that they want.

I believe the rumors
that they were shopping Bosh, I think hes gone after next season no matter what they do so Calderon is the guy they really want to keep.

If it comes down to trade bait -
you take the more desired player. By all accounts, that’s Griffin (so far…).

The best scenario would be for the Kings to be #1
And OKC #2, so the KIngs could get an extra player out of the detail.

Which as we all know, this franchise does not have. Unless you count ripping off Washington luck…..

You would swap picks w/ OKC?
Maybe get a guy like Collison or Wilcox out of it too?

Was actually thinking 2 of their later 1st rounders
But, ummm, Wilcox, no, because he plays for the Knicks. However if you’re thinking of Malik Rose, definitely no.

Yeah I guess
It could work. It could not. I’m not going to get wrapped up in the Rubio argument beyond the point I’ve already argued it. I’m just hoping the Kings get the chance to take him. I’m too cynical, too old, and believe the Kings have terribly rotten luck when it comes to this sort of thing.

I Try Not to Predict What Other Teams Might Do
After Indiana took Bayless in last year’s draft and then traded him to Portland in a deal they had put together before the draft began (a deal that nobody else knew about) right before we were potentially about to draft him, I don’t think we can safely assume what any other team is going to do.

I think you're sorta missing the point
There isn’t a guarantee Blake Griffin is coming out either. (Even though it’s far more likely.) The point is that Rubio is leaning that way because of where his potential draft selection is right now. That could change in a month.
I also think that the whole reason Rubio has stayed moot is that Dan Fegan (Rubio’s American Agent) is trying to power broker a big deal for Rubio to end up in a major spanish speaking market. Fortunately for Sacramento, the 916 qualifies.

Yeah
But would the Clippers take Rubio? (Yes, I think they would.) Would Golden State? Yeah, so only the Lakers can’t (as they won’t be). I have a feeling the KIngs are going to need the 1st overall pick to take Rubio. I hope the Kings get the first overall pick.

Slow and can’t shoot has never been a recipe for success.

Which part, the slowness or the shooting?
I assume you mean shooting, but he needs to overhaul his jumper from scratch. He can’t shoot off the dribble because he has a set shot that he shoots without jumping, very slowly.
by nbrans on Feb 27, 2009 6:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
can't fix the slowness without steroids
I was talking the shooting.
People have the expectation that Rubio=Steve Nash/Jose Calderon, which necessitates him improving that jumpshot markedly. But, I don’t see that as a problem, though honestly I have no reason for this precedent, because off the top of my head poitn guards with bad jumpshots always stayed point guards with bad shots even when they became l33t (Tony Parker, Rondo, Andre Milelr has improved his recently though… idk, can’t think of mroe off the top of my head)

But ...
Um … if Cal-era Jason Kidd were coming out in this draft, wouldn’t you take him top three?
by Ziller on Feb 27, 2009 7:13 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Jason Kidd
didn’t have the same athleticism concerns.
Nbrans general point has consistently been that you need two of the three (skill, size, athletecism) to make it in the L. Not being able to shoot subtracts from the skill points, his 6’3" size is good, and his athletecism is questionable. Basically, I’d have no worries about Rubio knowing he can develop a three point shot. However, if he can’t shoot throughout his career, then I’d be more inclined to take someone else than I would have been otherwise. Rubio will need to be able to shoot in order to create the space he’ll need in the NBA to pull off those crazy passes.
Originally, I wasn’t concerned with the shooting aspect because I figured “eh, he’ll learn” – but when I thought about it some more, I couldn’t really come up with many PGs who learned to shoot that didn’t have athletecism as a crutch to help them through those first few years.
Just because nbrans made a good point doesn’t mean I’m against drafting Rubio. It just means the road to glory isn’t paved with gold and silver. I equate Rubio roughly to Steve Nash/Jose Calderon, but a large part of what both can do is due to their shooting. Take shooting away from both, and what do you have? A player picked with a draft selection I would rather have gambled on Blake Griffin.
That said, if the Kings have the third pick, I still think Rubio is well worth the selection. As for who I would draft first, still gotta think about it.

Skills
Nice breakdown, iashwash, I think you clarified a lot of the confusion in this argument.
That being said, if we’re looking at Rubio’s “skills” category I’m not sure how important the shot is. Ball-handling and passing should be the most important skills for a PG, with shooting a distant third in my opinion. I completely agree that it makes him less valuable, less dominant.
I know you weren’t arguing against Rubio by any means. My view is that he can handle, he can pass, and I think he’s the best choice for this team if he’s available when he draft. But a lot of things still would have to fall into place.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot

ESPN is the business of drumming up interest for the draft
He still has the massive multi-million Euro buyout, and NBA teams can only pay 500k towards that. Reportedly there are negotiations to reduce it, but as long as that has not happened I don’t expect him to declare already in 2009 and/or come over before his contract is up or has just one year left. You would most likely have to wait for him.

Question
Would it be bad to wait for him (honest question – I don’t know the answer).
Let’s say that Griffin is gone when we pick, and the braintrust has determined that Rubio is thaaaaaaaaaaat much better than the next guy (this is not an argument for Rubio, just a scenario). Would you draft him ala Peja, knowing that he won’t be here for another year?
If the answer to the question is yes, question #2 is, does the fan base have the patience for this?

If he's the BPA, then I believe Yes
With some of the new players, we’re already playing better. So, with or without Rubio, we’ll be a better team next year. We’ll have an additional $4M in cap space because we won’t be paying him. We’ll have a new coach, so there’s going to be some learning curve anyway, And, since we won’t be moving K9’s contract before the trade deadline, our biggest jump in overall perfomance probably won’t be until the 2010/2011 season anyways.

Yes to waiting
And yes to the second question, if you are talking about the smart fanbase. Rubio gets an extra year to improve his game while the Kings get another high draft pick next year. In the mean time, the core of Speed, JT, Hawes, Cisco, Greene and maybe the other 2 picks get to play together for a year. It’s not like Rubio makes us a playoff team by himself anyways.
The following year we get Rubio AND our high pick and then (with maybe a trade sometime before) we are ready to make some noise.

Yeah but the learning curve in the L @ PG is steep ed
Very very steep. I could trot out examples but I’ll use a great one that sticks out in my mind: Seattle fans nearly turned on Gary Payton in his rookie season. There were a lot of people who said he was a bust in his rookie season. We all know how well that turned out.
