This Has to Stop

Yvesklein_medium

From Amick:

But with 4:55 to play and the defensively disinterested Kings trailing 118-71, Hawes was furious during a timeout. His face a bright-red mixture of anger and embarrassment, he yelled at his teammates, "This has to stop," before the Kings finished with a slight edge in garbage time (11-10).

Losses I can take. Trailing by 50 in the third quarter, getting destroyed on the boards by one of the worst rebounding teams in the universe ... no. Do not want.

This has to stop

Yeah, not being blown out by 40 in the first half isn’t so swell either. As much as Brad Miller’s play is disconcerting, you can’t blame him totally for last night.

Actually we can't blame him at all

Blame the fact that if your a jump shooting team and you don’t make your jump shots your going to lose. Blame the fact that when you can’t rebound, and you send everyone in deep to help, your going to get teams running fast breaks on you. Blame the fact, when every starter on your team, is not as good as the man he’s defending, then there is no one to help you defend your man. Blame the fact that the Kings don’t know their help assignments and are always out of position.

Actually, blame me, I can take it.

I don't blame innocent bystanders

This team sucks, yes, but some of it is a bi-product of the past instability.

Hmmm...

I do agree with your statement about how “every starter on the team not being as good as the man he’s defending.” I’ve never seen a starting 5 get “abused” on the defensive end on a nightly basis as I have with this years team..(And yes, that includes the Golden Boy K-Mart)…However, in regards to Brad….

The reason why we are a jump shooting team is because we have a 7fter who plays like he is 6’1 and hasnt played in the “key” the entire year…So it kinda is Brad’s fault were a jump shooting team…..However, last night was a collective effort and certainly not Brad’s fault alone-…..I enjoyed your post tho!

If he can't move laterally

Why is he bothering to play then? This team could lose it’s next 25 games without him anyway. And lose by 40 half the time.

Good Question Raised Pookey-

I’d rather see a rested and healthy K-Mart than the one who “can’t move laterally”…. Despite doing a good job of getting to the line this year, his 41% FG isnt exactly ripping the nets down at Arco anyways….Something just isnt right with Martin this year…perhaps its his injury?…perhaps its the other 11 guys surrounding him?…perhaps its the fact that a solid #2 (and protector) in Artest is gone?..Somethin is up-…Brutal year around the horn for everyone excluding JT, Hawes & the residents of Natomas on a game night!

by Hoops916 on Feb 3, 2009 11:00 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Martin has had it rough

I think it’s the injury mixed with the frustration of how poorly the team is playing. He doesn’t have the ability to play as well as he’d like to and he’s becoming less and less motivated to play hurt.

by vfettke on Feb 3, 2009 11:06 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't buy the injury excuse

When he didn’t have a good defender on him in the OKC game, he didn’t have any problems shooting, rebounding, or defending. I think he was just overclassed in the Suns game. If anything, I’d go along with the less & less motivated, but because their losing and not because he’s hurt.

In all seriousness

Do we even have 5 guys total who care on the team? Can we put any combination of 5 guys on the floor who will play with pride and intensity while they are out there? Personally, I’m at the point where I don’t care which 5 guys get starter minutes as long as they’re playing hard while they’re out there. If this means giving guys like Douby, Williams and Thomas big minutes so be it, as long as they’re busting their asses while they’re out on the court.

Please consider the environment before reading this signature.

I understand that this is not your point

But I just want to take this opportunity to note that the last two nights have confirmed to me that Shelden Williams’s play cannot help this team. He is – at best – a one-dimensional role player (rebounding) on a team that can’t afford to suffer his lack of production in every other area.

I wanted to support him as a defensive specialist, since we have historically paid dearly for our lack of interior defense. But, while his effort is fine, Shelden’s size/athleticism deficiencies make him unable to guard most PFs AND Cs in the league. Here are the starting PF and C for each team in our division: PHX – Amare, Shaq; GSW – Stephen Jackson, Biendrins; LAC – Randolph, Camby; LAL – Odom, Gasol (and let’s throw in Bynum). Among that group, you couldn’t say any matchup favors Shelden. Stephen Jackson might if Shelden had the offensive wherewithal to create a mismatch on the offensive end. (He doesn’t, as exemplified by his being blocked from behind by Grant Hill last night).

Frankly, I’d rather watch Brad take minutes from Shock and Hawes – at least he can still teach them a few valuable tricks.

by furious.d on Feb 3, 2009 8:01 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Stephen Jackson is also a SG

I fail to see your point on him. Has Shelden matched up against Biedrins yet? Or Bynum/Gasol?

by pookeyguru on Feb 3, 2009 8:11 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think Stephen Jackson is probably a natural SF

But he’s the second biggest starter on the Warriors, who obviously play a non-traditional lineup. My point is that if our center is guarding Biedrins and Williams is on the court, it’s a mismatch in favor of the Warriors. It doesn’t really matter if he’s guarding Jackson, Azubuike, or Magette. And if Shelden is our center and guarding Biedrins, it’s still a mismatch in favor of Golden State. Even Turiaf, who might be the closest thing to Shelden’s equivalent in the NBA, is better offensively.

As for the other guys, I’m not sure exactly who Shelden has matched up against this season. From what I’ve seen, however, he hasn’t done well against seven footers (Gasol/Bynum) or quicker PFs (Biedrins).

I guess all I’m really trying to say is that I had sold Shelden to myself as a strong interior defender before the season. And now I see that his lack of size, quickness, and explosive leaping ability make him a worse than average defender of bigs, despite his effort and fundamental skills.

by furious.d on Feb 3, 2009 8:49 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

My Opinion

Amundson showed last night that the best type of 6’8"/6’9" reserve big to have is one that can jump and run the floor and is athletic. Williams is none of those things which hurts his defensive capabilities and his offensive skills. He is strong enough but too short to guard centers and tall enough but too unathletic and slow to guard power forwards. Amundson, like Scot Pollard was, can run the floor, block shots, rebound and knows how to set good picks and then roll with speed. Players like Leon Powe, Carl Landry, Craig Smith and Paul Millsap have proven that they are the wave of the future as far as undersized reserve big men go. Williams does not fit the profile at all which is why he is gone after this year.

Thanks dalt

This is what I was trying to say. Too short to guard legit centers, not athletic enough to guard PFs, too offensively handicapped to be a garbage man.

Maybe this is exactly the format for the Kings reality show

You see, it was just a rumor that Dante went to the DL for development purposes. In truth he was filming the 1st episodes of Mystery Kings Theater 2008-9. And the popcorn in JT’s sclade was originally a prop for the show that BobbyJ then re-used for the prank.

Oh, and just in case: :-) :-) ;-O

That's pretty much it

The losses can have value, and not just in terms of draft position. Hawes and Thompson getting minutes is worth it, but yeah, it’s rough seeing what looks like (at least to me) a complete lack of effort or interest on the part of the players.

Seeing Phoenix get a fast break slam after a missed Kings free throw last night was just astounding. How the hell does that even happen?

I dunno, do you just shut Martin down and let his ankle problems heal up, or do you have to beat him to death because he’s the highlight reel most nights? I hate watching a guy with his gifts forced to play at two-thirds speed, especially when it’s not going to amount to anything.

Who would you rather have?

Right now, today, if you were trying to win a basketball game, who would you pick:
1. Beno or Nash?
2. Martin or Richardson?
3. Salmons or Grant Hill?
4. JT or Stoudomire?
5. Hawes or O’Neal?
6. Brown or Barbosa?
7. Garcia or Barnes?
8. Moore or Amundson?

For the starting five I could make a case to take Martin and/or Salmons but it’s close either way. The other three spots? Slam dunks. No way you take the Kings player. The three main reserves? Again I could make a case for Garcia but the other two are no brainers and Barbosa is so far above Brown that he can’t see that high. My point is that if the Kings are missing shots and not hustling and the Suns are on their game and fired up to play, there is NO WAY the Kings will even be IN the game let alone win. There is no excuse for a team to not hustle and be ready to play, but this Kings team is NOT going to beat the Suns when they are as fired up as they were last night.

If the Kings don’t start putting people on their ass when they come down the lane, this is going to keep happening for the rest of the season. This may be the worst defensive team in NBA history.

I agree that Spence has played his way into deserving starters' minutes

But I don’t think that Bobby and Donté are ready to play that much. There’s a thin line between getting a player experience and rewarding bad habits. I don’t think Beno or Salmons belong in the long-term plan of the franchise, but as long as they continue to be more valuable on the court than the kids, they should continue to get the playing time. When Donté and Bobby B are ready to take over, they’ll show it in practice and confirm it with consistent, quality play in whatever game minutes they get.

Practice time

He was in Reno during a stretch of many games in few nights, and he came back to take advantage of the practice time that came after.

I still think practicing/ meeting with the top club is better for Donté than playing garbage games in Reno.

I agree

Practice should be the primary method of development for inexperienced players. I think the D-League is a great resource for the guys we overlooked, and a good way to keep guys who came to the NBA before they were physically ready on the shelf. But it doesn’t prepare a player to contribute to an NBA team the way that practice should.

by furious.d on Feb 3, 2009 3:07 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It also doesn't prepare a player for an injury to a primary rotation player

And the team, now seeing this player pressed into action, can see how he responds.

He should just be thrown into action right now anyway

What harm will it do? We need to find out where he stands for the future. Will he be our starting SF or a backup? There’s no harm in finding out now when we’re just going to suck anyway.

I think he should get playing time

just not “most of the playing time” as shadow suggested. I’d love to see more of him, I just don’t think it’s a good idea to hand a 19 year old who doesn’t play defense the keys to the car.

Give him 15-20 consistently and let him prove he deserves more. If he trains and practices correctly, he’ll be a starter in no time.

Instead

let’s have a 30 year old who isn’t part of this team’s future get all the playing time. Sure, he’s young and doesn’t play defense, but that’s better than being old and not playing defense like most of the vets on this team

How about

the irreparable damage you could do to Donte throwing him in before he’s ready.

I don’t know why you guys think having a 19 year old humiliated nightly by grown men would be good for his career or his development. When he deserves regular minutes, he’ll get them.

I don’t see why this coaching staff doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt with our rookies. JT started hot, got minutes, then he sucked, his minutes went away. Once he was on the right track again, he got more time and is growing almost nightly again.

Same thing with Spencer, before the last week or so, going back a month, he’s sucked. It happens, he’s young and learning. For the past week, he’s gradually playing better, as he does, I would guess he’ll get more time.

The coaching staff has done a great job handling the young guys, the only exception is maybe Donte, because we see him so little. Their handling of the other guys makes me mostly give them a pass on Donte, because its obviously worked.

An average game by John Salmons would be the best game of Donte's career.

This latest debacle proves one thing

Martin is not the team leader he was anointed to be. If he is a leader it’s in a bad way. He leads by example playing no defense and the rest of the team follows suit. Ever noticed how opposing SGs always have a field day against this team? But the blame goes back to Petrie for what the Kings have morphed into. The guy only looks at the stat sheet which does not indicate defense. The fact is Petrie forgot that defense is half of the game.

by KingsFan on Feb 3, 2009 10:52 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

+1

Make all the excuses you want, Martin isn’t the best player on this team. Offensively, subtract the other teams SG point total from Martins point total and the balance is his total worth. Because defensively he’s a liability, and he adds no value from rebounding & assists.

Right now John Salmons, for all of his bad habits, is the best player on the team.

Give me a break

There is no “leader” in the history of basketball that would make this team good.

Martin is far and away this team’s best player, and still has the opportunity to get better. All this consternation about his defense is just silly, likely it will get better as he matures, asking anyone to lead this team anywhere right now is nuts.

An average game by John Salmons would be the best game of Donte's career.

by ForThree on Feb 3, 2009 3:46 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

And Martin is the best player on the squad, by pretty much any statistical measure. Salmons doesn’t exactly ooze leadership himself, and his superior defense to Martin’s doesn’t really compensate for Martin’s offensive abilities and efficiencies.

Martins' shortcoming will become painfully clear

If Salmons is traded, and Martin has to start defending the top SF in the league. Right now Salmons takes on the responsibility of defending the best SF or SG. When Salmons isn’t around anymore and Martin has to expend a lot of energy defending, expect his offense to go down.

Leadership means nothing if you’re not an all around good player. No one follows a leader that can’t do the whole job himself. Cisco is a better all around player and that’s why he doesn’t have a problem speaking up. Salmons is less vocal by nature, but he still leads by example. Kevin isn’t a complete player so he can’t speak up or lead by example.

gross generalizations

are cute, but don’t tell you anything

Before this year LeBron James was nothing to write home about defensively and he seemed to lead his team just fine. And before you throw up the straw man, I’m aware Martin isn’t LeBron.

Its very unlikely Martin will have responsibility for the other team’s best wing, for the simple reason that most teams don’t ask their best player to guard the other team’s best player often. That’s for lots of reasons, foul trouble, and the fact that your best player has plenty of responsibility without having to shut down their best guy also any given night.

Martin can easily be the team’s best player and not be a great defender. He needs to get better though of course.

An average game by John Salmons would be the best game of Donte's career.

by ForThree on Feb 3, 2009 6:16 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Speaking of generalizations

I thought I was very specific on why John, Cisco,& Martin’s skills as a leader were different, and why trading Salmons could be bad for Martin.

for the simple reason that most teams don’t ask their best player to guard the other team’s best player often.

Now that’s a generalization if I ever heard one. Where are your facts? I don’t believe that for one moment. The only reason a team would do that is to protect their star if he starts getting into foul trouble or if he was a bad defender to start with which is exactly why the Kings do it.

Martin can easily be the team’s best player and not be a great defender

Of course he can on a bad team, show me a good team whose best player can’t play good defense. The question is “Is he the best player right now?”. And, I contend that that question is highly debateable. Either way when this team gets good, he’ll have to improve his defense or he definitely won’t be the best player on the team.

Bonzi brought a level of physical toughness that I don’t see in this group. Artest was similar in that respect. You mean a mix of different players, right?

I’m not certain that any mix of this roster is going to make much of a difference. Our best player is a 2nd or 3rd option on a good team. We are going to have to be patient because this current group is both too unskilled and/or too young to make much of an impact. Oh well…patience is a virtue, right? ;-)

And I’m not going thru the Artest wars again; been there & done that. This mix will never work I agree, but by any stretch, it wasn’t destined to work with Miller and Udrih under-performing (even though their stats aren’t remarkably down across the board).

We dont need a different mix

What we need is a consistant mix of players. It’s bad enough that we’re playing rookies, and had two different coaches over the past 50 games. What we need is consistancy. The players need to learn their jobs and gain some trust that the guys on the floor with them are going to do their job.

Give me 5 starters. The same starters every game, playing in their normal position for one complete month. Stop the insane multitude of rotations. Let the players learn to play with each other and trust each other.

I was a early advocate of skill set matchups

At the start of the season, I thought Miller matched up well with JT because JT could Offensive Rebound & Miller was out of position playing in the high post. I also, thought Shelden with his down low size and defense matched up with Hawes who didn’t have the bulk to go up against bigs the likes of Oden.

But, the season is half over, and we didn’t do that and as of now our defense is worst than ever. We have to learn to play defense. We can’t keep giving up 120ppg. We either don’t know how to play team defense or what our help assignment are. Or, their are too many players that just can’t play man defense, and no amount of helping is going to fix the problem.

It’s time to eliminate all the doubt and confusion. Stop playing zone. Everyone defends his own man, and let the coaching staff teach the help assignment. The worst case we lose every game and win the lottery. The best case the guys learn how to play team defense and trust each other.

Either way, by the end of the season we’ll know who can play defense and who can’t.

Its called the NBA draft....

As a Blazers fan that sufferd through many years of trying to salvage a sinking ship through trades, I have come to the conclusion that like the NFL, teams are ultimately built through the draft.

Draft well, and things will turn around. Brandon Roy and Lamarcus Aldridge single handedly turned the franchise around. And they came out of a percieved “weak” draft.

Hold on to Martin & Hawes. Scrap everything else & rebuild like OKC. Yes they are a joke now, but that roster will be ferocious in a few years, especially if they can nab a decent big man.

Your telling me Town and Country is the place to get my new ride??...hehuha

If the Kings REALLY liked Hasheem Thabeet this draft, they could ask whoever the team was that was going to draft him that if they do, would they then trade Hasheem for Spencer Hawes and the player that the Kings draft (as directed by that team) with the Houston pick.

This just an example to illustrate what is possible. Not that it would happen exactly like this or for Thabeet. It could be Udrih, Brown and the pick for Teague and a scrub or Salmons and the pick for Al-Farouq Aminu. Again, all just random examples.

The Blazers probably would have taken Rudy Gay instead.

Or, if KP thought Jordan was going after Roy, had the Bulls take Roy with #2—though in that scenario, Charlotte taking LaMarcus at #3 is a no-brainer.

THAT move would have shown some balls. (I can’t say “balls” at BEdge, unless talking about the orange round things that go in the hoop, but I think I can say it here…)

Certainly, being a good GM does involve some luck—and some stupidity of the guy in front of you if you don’t have a hand full of aces.

Another topic: coaching

This is just my gut, so if anybody has stats to prove me wrong, please let me know. Anyway, maybe it’s just the mood around here and around town when I talk to other fans, but this teams seems like it has gotten worse since the Theus firing. I hear about the “professionalism” of Natt and all his positivies. Still, it just feels like the team is not improving at all. And, as I said – to me – they seem to be playing worse. Offensively. Defensively. And I don’t like his rotations at all.

Tell me why I am wrong. Maybe, it’s just the negative vibe over the past several weeks, and I am full of it.

by Kusian on Feb 3, 2009 1:54 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Not wrong

Professionalism is great and all. So is trying to teach the basics. I sense there is much more to being a successful NBA head coach.

And whatever that is, Kenny Natt doesn’t seem to have it.

by otis29 on Feb 3, 2009 2:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Bzdelik's resume looks bad

Cuz he coached the Nuggets to a 17-65 season his first season coaching (02-03). But, he was a 500 coach after that. He coaches at Colorado now after a successful stint at Air Force.

The thing I like about Bzdelik is that he’s a Pat Riley disciple, and has coached bad teams before. (Which I don’t think will necessarily make him want to leave Colorado. He likes living there apparently.)

The biggest argument that I have for Silas is that he can help this team onto the right track. He doesn’t have to be the guy who gets this team to a championship, but he has to put this team back in the right direction. With Kenny Natt, I don’t see it. But, as long as this team currently has all the players it does have at the moment, then I fail to see how Paul Silas would make a difference either. Shades of purple I suppose….

I think we're likely to see Eddie Jordan

Petrie brought Coachie back and with the type of players he goes after it’s likely he’ll pick up another coach that will run a Princeton offense.

I know everyone wants a defensive minded coach, but we don’t have defensive minded players. However, if we were to go for a defense first coach, what about Tom Thibodeau? What are the chances we pry him from Boston?

The team is playing worse under Natt. So, although Reggie wasn’t the total problem, Natt isn’t void of some blame now. We weren’t giving up over 115ppg aver under Reggie with the same players.

It's obvious

They have gotten a lot worse to the point they have no confidence or even pride. Seems to me the Maloofs have bungled the team badly. I’m thinking it might not be too long before they sell the franchise just to be rid of it.

Reggie was not a bad coach. I think they got rid of him because he refused to get rid of Chuck and Joe Maloof did not like Chucky.

Reggie was awful this year

And the stories that came out after Theus’ firing paint a different picture than just Joe Maloof’s dislike for Chuck Person. Turns out Chuck was really doing the heavy lifting while Reggie kicked back.

Honestly, I thought the team had questionable energy during Theus’ stewardship this season. Last year, the team seemed to at least play hard for him.

Don’t forget, he oversaw the following home losses:

By 21 to Dallas
By 23 to Portland
By 33 to Denver
By 24 to the Knicks

And he was 2-9 on the road.

If Reggie was the answer, that was one fucked up question.

But having said that, Theus was not all at fault, nor does he deserved to be absolved completely of blame either. The honest Venn Diagram of Reggie’s time as Head Coach here will show that he did make real fundamentally unsound mistakes.

This is just the worst possible team at the worst possible time

Of coarse, when is a good time to be a bad team? When the draft is deep and there is a clear #1. This isn’t really the case at all this year. This certainly isnt a deep draft that much seems certain. Never know till the college year is over but is sure looks like a shallow draft from here.

But he'll make so much more

He can pay for the buyout with his first year’s salary and still have $2 million left over. Or split it up over the first 3 years of his rookie contract and still have $12 million left. I don’t know what his salary for Joventut is but paying $3 million to make $12 in the NBA is well worth it.

And he will get quite a few endorsements simply by playing in California, period. End of story.

www.mancancook.net

by vfettke on Feb 3, 2009 9:46 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think your numbers are off

According to the Coon CBA Q&A, the 2009/2010 #1 draft pick will make $13.4M if his contract is picked up in the 3rd year. If not, then he only is only guaranteed $8,8M. Rubio’s buyout is rumored to be about $7M euros which is $9.1M US. So, if they can make a deal to pay the buyout over 3 years, Rubio’s aver salary over that period would be $1.4M per year.

The danger is that if he gets seriously hurt or his game doesn’t translat to the NBA game, he might not get that 3rd yr contract and end up oweing more than he makes. If I were 19, with money in the bank and a star in my own country, I wouldn’t take that gamble.

One more point. He’s 19 yrs old, what he going to do with that money. He can’t even go into a bar and order a glass of wine. If he enters next year his buyout is less and the danger not as sever and he’ll still be slated to be the #1 pick. I think he’ll wait until next year, and then he might not come over until 2010/2011.

A ton of money, and a lot more than he could get playin for JKG Joventut, and with whatever endorsements he may get along the way. (He has a small contract, and a huge buyout because his team recognized, duh!, that the NBA would be after him as soon as he was eligible. Well, he’s eligible now.)

You seem to ignore the main question

If GP & his new assistant can work out a long term payment plan to buy out Rubio’s contract, it’s still up to Rubio to gamble his future and the repayment, on his ability to get a max contract. You’ve pointed out numerous times that Rubio & his family and not overly obsessed with making money.

In 2 yrs Rubio will be 21 and able to enjoy all the benefits of being a legal age rich man in America. In 2 yrs the majority of the expense to buy out his contract, and the danger of not being able to repay it will be gone. In 2yrs he may be able to accomplish everything he wants to do in Europe. So, why would he come over here now.

Rubio will still be a top 5 draft pick in the 2010 draft. In fact, DX has him being #1 in the 2010 draft. So, why wouldn’t Rubio enter the 2010 draft, then either work out a cheeper buyout or even stay in Europe until 2011, and come over as a 21 yr old with no major expenses and a #1 draft contract.

Conversly

if Rubio and his family are not overy obsessed with money then why not work out a buy out and come over sooner? He’d still become very rich here plus he’d get to play with the best players in the world and develop immensely playing against them. Waiting 2 or 3 years to come over and play in the NBA might actually hurt him, especially since the competition there isn’t even close to what it is here.

until he actually shows up for the team that drafted him, whether thats the first year or the 5th.

Thats why Tiago Splitter and some other will probably never come, he’d have to start his rookie contract at the $800k mark and go the 4 years.

(My condolences to he and his family by the way, I heard his 19 yr old sister died of Luekemia yesterday)

Anyway, the point is, Rubio is top 3 this year, he can bank that selection and just wait out his clauses in europe before coming, when he’d start his 4 yr rookie obligation – or never come(?)

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

I am the stone that builder refused..I am the visual...The inspiration..That made lady sing the blues....I'm the spark that makes your idea bright.....The same spark that lights the dark....So that you can know your left from your right...I am the ballot in your box....The bullet in your gun...The inner glow that lets you know...To call your brother son....The story that just begun...The promise of what's to come...And I'm 'a remain a soldier till the war is won....
