When Life Hands You Lemons

Come up with a trade that allows you to dump your lemons on someone else for expiring contracts and picks.

With the news that Orlando's Jameer Nelson will be out for several weeks having hit the web hours ago, I'm a bit surprised that this is the first reactionary Magic trade proposed. Nevertheless:

Let's go to the Trade Machine

Add to this Orlando's first-round pick (heck, even their 2010 first rounder if it's a sticking point).

Orlando perspective: They secure a young, quality backup PG to Nelson. He may be overpaid, but Nelson is (and will continue to be) underpaid, so it evens out. They get a guy (Mikki) who can approximate what Battie does, but who can be bought out relatively cheaply in the offseason. They clear about $5.75M from next year's payroll, which they can use to keep Hedo without cracking the luxury tax.

Sacramento perspective: We net -$23.5M worth of Beno's contract and pick up another first rounder without significantly limiting our salary cap options in the short term (Only difference is paying Redick $3M in 09-10, assuming we would've bought out Mikki). Sadly, Brian Cook and Redick would probably command minutes on this team. The PG situation gets less stable and we get more ping-pong balls.

Anybody?

I'd be much more eager

if we didn’t have to include Moore and Battie (in other words, just Beno for Redick, Cook, and a pick).

Are you thinking that swapping centers so they can clear cap space to re-sign Hedo is the only way they do this?

by twasserm on Feb 3, 2009 11:09 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

That's the idea

It might be that Beno is the best PG they could get without breaking up Nelson, Hedo, Howard, and Lewis, so maybe they’d be interested without the Moore/Battie portion. But I think clearing that extra $3M will put the deal over the top for them, since it goes a long way toward helping them bring Hedo back. To us, it’s not a big deal, because we’ll still be clearing like $14.8M from QD, Shelden, Bobby J, and Cooke. And on top of that we might be able to move Miller, K9, etc. for expiring stuff.

But yeah, if they’d do it w/o us having to take on Battie, more power to us.

by furious.d on Feb 3, 2009 11:23 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

That would mean taking on a lot of extra salary next year, about 5 mil, kind of ties our hands barring a salary dump elsewhere.

I know we get out of Beno’s 3 extra, but . . . . .It seems like a bit of an overreaction by Orlando as well, he’s only supposed to be out a few weeks.

If I were Orlando

I’d probably be thinking of an extra post-player to back up Howard, despite thier current Nelson problem.

Ben just updated with a statement from Otis Smith saying that Nelson will likely be lost

So, in a way, they will have to deal for a PG. It’s interesting to see what they will do, but this is going to get every team calling.

They are talking about Nelson shutting it down now Lttg

So, it may not be a complete over-reaction. For whatever it’s worth, though, the gents @ 3QC do not like any idea of our’s either.

I'd definitely do this

But I doubt anybody in Orlando will love this. The only part I think that you bring up, that’s worth anything, is that they can save money by buying out Moore vs paying Battie. Other than that, I find it a bit difficult to believe Orlando will do anything with their 1st round pick when they’re taking Beno’s salary off the Kings hands.

Here’s a sort of that point made by Ben Q Rock of 3QC.

Hmm

Well someone on Orlando’s roster has to be expendable. I’d take any combination of contracts on that when added to Battie is tradeable for Beno and Mikki. Bogans? Courtney Lee? Bring ’em on.

by furious.d on Feb 3, 2009 11:35 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Beno's contract is a poison pill

That’s the point I’m making. But if I were Orlando, and I wanted to help shore up my position, with a young enough player who has talent, I’d take this type of risk. It’s not like Beno is Jamaal Tinsley or anything where the Pacers told Tins he couldn’t come anywhere near the team.

Definitely

I’ve made two trade proposals in the last two hours to get rid of this guy. I hate his contract.

That said, I definitely think he’s got the ability to help a very good team get through a very bad time. Is Beno overpaid? Sure. But so is Rashard Lewis, and they seem to like him plenty.

Otherwise they’re going to have to take their pick of the Dan Dickaus of the world, because I can’t imagine a PG better than Beno being available to them without breaking up their core four.

by furious.d on Feb 3, 2009 11:51 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope I can't imagine a better PG than Beno available

Although, there is a lot of idea’s out there coming out of the woodwork for this exact reason. Orlando has a few expendable assets, and Sacramento would be better off trading Beno away for them in the long run. Even if Petrie doesn’t want to do it, he should from a financial perspective.

Agreed. Rec'd

I think the deal is Beno for Battie. No picks involved. We get $6 million+ in cap room after 2010. Orlando gets a young, mediocre PG for an aging, mediocre PF.

by ttylerbballcamper on Feb 3, 2009 12:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

that would be a tough pill for me to swallow

Battie is utterly worthless to us. But you’re right, paying Beno $20M from 2010-2013 would be even tougher. Yuck.

I would be willing to do Beno/Douby for Cook/Redick and the Vasquez pick myself

Like Tiago Splitter

I think he’s have to start back down at what the pay scale is for the position he was drafted.

A huge pay cut. (I know its true of Tiago, he’s have to take $800 k for three years or something – probably never happen)

we homers tend to either

undervalue or overvalue our players. I’m sure that there are fans in other cities who have been impressed with beno when they saw him play. I’m thinking that beno would be a decent contract at about 3 mil per year but there is always a premium on pg’s. If we don’t draft rubio I’d still like petrie to consider a trade with chi for hinrich.

Nice

I’ll be interested to read their reactions. I doubt it’ll see much support since it’s a trade for an overpaid, mediocre player. But I really do think that something like this is their best option, unless they want to just play out the season with Anthony Johnson and draft a real backup.

The point is that

They would indulge in their fantasies, rather than listen for us to offer our “trash” so they can clean it up. Erivera’s points about how valuable about Nelson have nothing to do with Beno, but he seems to think it matters a great more than it does.

Beno isn't "trash" .. I never relegated that term on him.

He’s just not a viable solution for the Magic, nothing more.

I realize GM Otis Smith is in a pinch, but that doesn’t mean he should make a hasty move that’ll cost him down the road. He already made one trade like that (Ariza for Cook/Evans) and it’s pretty clear the Magic came up on the losing side on that deal.

I also realize that Barbosa, Felton, and others are probably “unrealistic” options, but it doesn’t hurt to talk ‘fantasy’ trades nevertheless. Helps spur discussion.

Can't argue the sentiment of fantasy trades spurring discussion

It often gets anybody going.

Felton: I don’t see coming unless Augustin returns healthy (I could also see Charlotte not wanting to deal with Orlando being in the same division)
Barbosa: Depends on what Kerr wants for him—but unlikely

I didn’t say you thought Beno was trash; that wasn’t the point. I would be fine with the Kings keeping Beno honestly. I just don’t think he fits that well into what the KIngs have now with their main pieces.

Now as a viable solution on the court I disagree; as a viable solution overall because of his contract, that’s debatable. It’s a risk, and it’s a risk you wouldn’t take. It’s a risk I would. What it comes down to.

Just got word from the boys over at BSotS ..

.. that Phoenix probably would be willing to take expiring contracts & picks, so Barbosa could (key word) be had via trade.

I don't doubt they would consider it

I just wonder what Kerr will.

One of their ideas is Earl Watson

Which isn’t such a bad idea actually.

They’re definitely not getting Barbosa or Felton though.

Oklahoma City

Given their hole at SG I’d imagine the deal could get done for something like Cook and Redick.

What would Okl want

with those guys? Just a favor to Orl seems to me.

I get your point

just don’t see that Okl would think there’s an answer there….

I don't think they want to be paying Watson

It clears some salary and they get a look at Redick. It may take more sweetening from Orlando, but something along those lines is more likely than a Beno trade, IMO.

Cook & Redick make as much as Watson does next season btw

So, in fact, they wouldn’t be saving any salary.

Ah

You’re right. I had thought Cook was expiring.

It might still work if Orlando offered them their 1st

don't know

I think OKC would have to demand a pick too, since Redick and Cook doesn’t give them any salary relief and creates a hole at PG.

But you’re absolutely right that he makes as much, if not more sense than Beno. He’s the low risk, low reward option.

I think Keyon Dooling represents that for the Magic

Who knows if they want to acquire him after the problems he had with them over the summer.

I doubt Dooling would want to come back to Orlando.

He’s still pissed off about how the organization treated him during the off-season, and I don’t blame him for having that sentiment .. the Magic really low-balled him.

That's why I think Otis Smith might consider Beno

They’re going to exhaust they’re preferred options quickly.

Anyway

It’ll be interesting to see who becomes the primary contender in the rip-off-the-Magic sweepstakes. With the amount of money they have locked into their top five, and the prospect of having to re-sign Hedo this summer, they are definitely in now-or-never mode.

by furious.d on Feb 3, 2009 2:27 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I definitely don't agree with that

I think that’s why there’s so much disagreement. Unless you find another All-Star level G to replace Jameer Nelson, it’s pretty unlikely you’re going to find a replacement that will keep the Magic headed to a possible championship.

Beno has talent, and maybe unrecognized talent by those who don’t watch him much, but he isn’t the caliber of player that Jameer Nelson is.
