Around SBN: FSU To Big 12 'Inevitable,' According To Report

Perhaps signaling a willingness to dismantle their roster, the Phoenix Suns have begun exchanging trade proposals with teams for All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire, league executives told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday. ... If Kerr and assistant GM David Griffin do trade Stoudemire, a four-time All-Star, they want a combination of expiring contracts, a talented young player – preferably a forward – and draft picks.

Although

Spencer might play better with Amare then JT with his ability to step away from the basket.

Just wish there was a way to keep both Spence and JT to pick up Amare. If only we could get another pick to send the Suns way.

Brilliant...

Two white stiffs and a draft pick for one of the most explosive players in the NBA, Steve Kerr might be dumb enough to do it. I like it, add a premier point guard and we got a contenda!!

Shaq threw a punch at Miller about 40 years ago, when Brad was still interested in playing defense. My bet is that Shaq wouldn’t care one way or the other.

by Tom Ziller on Feb 5, 2009 5:24 PM PST up reply actions

Keep in mind

That our biggest problems are not offensive production. It is in fact rebounding and defensive production. Amare is not a very good on the ball defensive player (great in the help side which is where most of his blocks come from) and his rebounding is sub-par for a player with his athleticism.

Sac in: Amare
Sac Out: Beno, Salmons, BJax, Rox 1st

Phx in: Howard, Bjax, Rox 1st

Dal in: Salmons, Beno

I think the Suns do it. Not sure about Dallas. Although they get someone just as productive as Howard plus their backup PG.

I worked out a three-team with phoenix and dallas in which we end up with Amare and Kidd. We give up both first rounders, JT, Salmons and the scrap heep. Dallas ends up with Beno, Miller, Salmons, BJax and tons of cap space and our first rounder, Phx gets JT and Howard and probably Houston’s first rounder.

Sac new line-up: Kidd, Martin, Garcia, Amare, Hawes. I would renew my season tix!

I can’t comment on Webber’s pre-Kings days since I was maybe 13, but from what is out on Amare, I do consider him a “cancer.” My lasting memory of Webber was when he came out of the timeout to guard Shaq in the playoffs. Even Artest, cancer he may be, desperately played to win. I don’t see that desire to want to win with Amare. He refuses to play defense, doesn’t board, and cares more of individual STATs. He disappears on plays where he’s not the option. All the recent stuff coming out of Phoenix is that Amare is wearing out his welcome with fans and veterans. Add in the fact that Amare’s numbers are Nash inflated (47% shooter prior), I just don’t think he’s worth the hassle. Bosh on the other had, I would want.

I Agree

Bosh looks like a solid cornerstone (minus this season but injuries and a coaching change have stalled the franchise). Amare if we were to get him and NOT give up one of young guys and still had our pick i would do it.

To me it seems like phoenix wants to go all in and make a run with Nash. What with Kerr saying that Nash is the only player on the roster not available. If they trade stat that leaves one other productive rotation player under 29 (barbosa) Nash, Richardson, Shaq are all 29+. All that being said if we sent Miller, Salmons, Moore OR Bjax (this might be more likely) to Phoenix it still does not mess with the cap space in 2010 for them and gives us a “Superstar” type player in Amare (at least offensively) and makes our biggest need a PG who can distribute and defend.

The Amare talk is Chris Webber all over again. Petrie would not hesitate. The going rate for Amare is going to be out lottery pick this season, one of Thompson or Hawes and expirings.

by Carl on Feb 5, 2009 7:21 PM PST up reply actions

I went to college with C-Webb, I had season tix for C-Webb, Amare, you are no C-Webb

C-Webb had two of the best hands in league history, he was the best-passing and playmaking big man in the league, he led the league in rebounding the first full year with Sac, he developed an automatic elbow jumper, he played D and blocked shots, he had an unusually high IQ, had the spatial awareness and cognitive ability to be eminently coachable, he had friends and admirers throughout the league, he made his teammates better, he made them believe in themselves, he made the game more fun for them…

My Lord, he did a HELL of a lot more than Stand Tall and Talented.

The similarities are completely superficial: (a) immature; (b) explosive; © Sac may be able to obtain at discount. The differences are what matters.

The similarities are completely superficial: (a) immature; (b) explosive; © Sac may be able to obtain at discount. The differences are what matters.
  • Already a star with an absolute clear line between here and superstardom.
  • Relatively young.
  • The Kings are down on its luck and going absolutely nowhere.
  • His team is down on him for “underachieving.”
  • So much better than anyone we have that refusing to bring Stoudemire in is like kicking Naomi Watts out of bed because she isn’t Charlize Theron.
  • Puts the team one player (or some very good role players) away from championship contention for the next five years.

I’m a CWebb fan – I ponied up $100, purely to see the retirement ceremony tomorrow night, as I don’t much care about the 20 point loss that’s sure to follow. But I’m not going to overrate Webber while underrating Stoudemire.

C-Webb had two of the best hands in league history

No argument there.

he was the best-passing and playmaking big man in the league

Right after Kevin Garnett.

he developed an automatic elbow jumper

Well, not really. Webber was criticized, maybe rightly, maybe not, for not playing more in the low post. Stoudemire is a more efficient scorer by far.

he played D and blocked shots

Stoudemire and Webber’s career shotblocking numbers are the same. Stoudemire averaged 2.1 per game last year. It’s an issue of motivation, which – guess what – was Webber’s problem when he came to Sacramento.

he had friends and admirers throughout the league, he made his teammates better, he made them believe in themselves, he made the game more fun for them…

Maybe so, but he’d also been in legal trouble and worn out his welcome twice in his first five years in the league. Webber was known as a malcontent, troublemaker, underachiever and cancer before he came here. Sound familiar?

Here’s my point. Everything you’re saying about Amare Stoudemire today, someone said about Chris Webber in 1998.

If Geoff Petrie has an opportunity to get Stoudemire, he will. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind.

mikki moore was a much more efficient scorer with NJ than C-Webb in his prime

Amare has been Mikki to Steve Nash’s J-Kidd.

The playmaking is no comparison, and also the personality. Until he blew out his knew and turned into an a-hole who through his teammates under the team bus, C-Webb was a great guy who players loved playing with. As far as I know, out of the NBA’s 360 active players, only Amare likes Amare.

Until he blew out his knee, Webber was capable of solid defense. Amare, incapable.

Finally, there’s the nagging issue of Amare being dumb as a stump. Dumb as a stump is not good.

Life is every mammal's journey from very very wet to very very dry.

Mikki Moore has never hit double figures in scoring. Amare Stoudemire has never hit less than 20 points after his rookie season.

I’m not arguing that Stoudemire is Chris Webber, or is better than Chris Webber. I’m saying that when you’re the worst team in the league and that kind of talent comes available, you go after it.

You’re giving up a real future to get Stoudemire. What did the Kings give up to get Webber? (Some of the real problems are on the court. Webber didn’t really have on the court issues either. Or at least not one’s that weren’t there all along anyway. And Webber was no great board man himself.)

If...

Realistically, the Kings don’t have the talent to entice Kerr (unless Petrie was willing to trade KMart, JT, and the Kings 1st and we know that’s not going to happen). And I highly doubt Kerr wants to trade within his division.

I agree with that

NY has the perfect asset’s for Phoenix to get a deal done. You don’t let your past with D’Antoni dictate how you build your team in the future. If you’re smart.

I've tried hard to figure out a NYK trade

But it’s tough, because I don’t know if NYK would take on Barbosa and potentially complicate 2010 considering how unlikely it is that they’ll be able to dump Curry/Jeffries. I also think there are pride issues at stake here, namely the bad blood between Phoenix and D’Antoni. Just don’t see it happening.

I think Toronto is more likely.

by nbrans on Feb 5, 2009 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think the Kings are gonna get Amare

Few reasons:

Suns probably don’t want to send Amare within their own division/conference if they can help it. Amare might feed off of trying to beat Pheonix into a pulp. Would be good for us, not so much for them.

I don’t really see anything that we have that Phoenix would want other than JT and Spencer and I don’t want to get rid of them for a guy who might only be here for a couple years.

by Aykis16 on Feb 5, 2009 2:33 PM PST reply actions

Maybe the Kings could work something out here.

Maybe they would bite in this deal along with the Houston pick and a future lottery protected #1.

or something like this deal with the Kings giving up Houstons pick and OK giving up either Denvers #1 this year or San Antonios #1 this year.

Deal #1 gives Kerr cap space, a young big in Hawes and a relatively cheap Salmons +12 million in cap relief dollar and 2 picks.

Deal #2 gives Kerr a ton of cap space and two picks this year- along with Hawes.

Udrih is easily added to either of these deals and I see the Suns looking to dump Barbosa along with Amaré in this purge. Food for thought, not a prediction.

Cap space has a value- especially for a team sitting at the bottom of the playoff bracket.

This deal would knock 22 million off of the Suns cap number for next season. Total savings of roughly 36 million when you include luxury tax dollars and you add a young top ten pick 7 footer in Hawes and 2 draft picks.
